With more people thriving with the benefits of accurate, intentional, and resilient thinking, the better our world will become. Kelly teaches people about the science of Positive Psychology, which is the study of optimal human functioning. It aims to discover and promote the factors that allow individuals and communities to thrive. Positive psychology is about helping people move “north of neutral” (Seligman, 2002). It is about building what is right, not just fixing what is wrong. Practitioners of positive psychology live approach based lives (Peterson, 2003).  Kelly shares her personal experience with her daughters anxiety. “When I witnessed my daughter's first panic attack (over a pair of pants), I really didn't know what to do. She was very obviously in pain. My mothering skills were simply not enough to help her and it was agonizing for both of us.” This is why she created the book, Jane's Worry Elephant. She created it so that other parents know what science has shown can help children. So that other kids experiencing anxiety can have some tools of their own. Anxiety is painful. She wants to help ease the pain, and to let other families know that they are not alone. Listen how Kelly uses Positive Psychology copings skills to make changes in the world. Her go to positive psychology tool as a mother is the 54321 technique. Which is where you acknowledge: 5 things around you, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you hear, 2 things you can smell, 1 thing you can taste. LIVE THE HERO Practitioner Profiler (PP)- Welcome to our Positive Psychology Practitioner Profiler  where we highlight ordinary people that are doing extra ordinary things! Each practitioner is one of our graduates of the CertifIcate in Positive Psychology Program. Find out the exciting ways people are putting the science into practice within their Communities, Organizations and Lives.  In this episode, Emiliya Zhivotovskaya CEO & Founder, The Flourishing Center highlights Anthony Simeone, a speaker, writer, and personal development coach tells us about his mission to promote the concept of everyday heroism, which urges people to take an active and positive approach to their daily lives. “WHEN you feel like you are going through HELL…  JUST KEEP GOING! BE YOUR OWN HERO” He created Live The Hero which is the embodiment of his efforts to make the knowledge of positive psychology more easily accessible to as many people as possible.  Inspiring men to Live the hero…Is all about appreciating the journey! Anthony says. “Let's face it, most men have been given flimsy advice to live by, which usually amounts to nothing deeper or profound than “suck it up, be tough, be a man.” So, Anthony decided enough was enough. Finally, after years of struggle, study, and searching, he created a life path that serves men, rather than enslaves them to shallow ideas about what it means to be a man. Anthony created Live The Hero community. He helps men redefine what it means to be a “real man.” Anthony uses positive psychology tools for many of his programs. Listen to find out about the many inspiring ways Anthony is making a difference in the world today! Discover his unique methods of self-care practices that allow him to be high functioning! You might even be inspired to jazz up your vocabulary! Cognitive distortions are self-limiting patterns of thinking that many of us demonstrate in life. These mental biases include “all or nothing thinking,” “overgeneralizing,” and “no control fallacy.” Sound familiar? In this episode, we hear from Courtney Ackerman on how to identify and begin to manage these negative thought patterns. Courtney is the author of My Pocket Positivity, and a researcher and regular contributor to the Positive Psychology Program.

Dr. Sanj Katyal is a radiologist and a student of positive psychology.  He wrote the book that he wished he had read 20 years ago and he in order to share what he has learned with us.  He combines the philosophy of the ancient stoics and Bhagavad Gita with the relatively new, science-backed positive psychology to help us live our best lives.  We cover the trap of hedonic adaptation and how this applies to physician finances and how this concept can cause an initially exciting profession to become mundane, and how to resist this.  We also discuss why we should all be meditating, practicing gratitude, and negative visualization - picturing yourself without to appreciate what you have.  Our discussion just scratches the surface and for more, read the book to learn how to achieve what the stoics called eudaimonia - the state of human flourishing.  Dr. Katyal holds a Bachelor of Science with University Honors in Chemical and Biomedical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and a Medical Degree from New York University School of Medicine. He is the Founder of Positive Psychology Program for Physicians and President of Optimal Life Imaging Group, PC. Dr. Katyal also holds certifications in Positive Psychology and Positive Psychology Coaching from Whole Being Institute. He has published and lectured extensively on well-being and the Science of Happiness to audiences ranging from college students to physicians. His research interests include developing a new model of optimal wellness incorporating principles from psychology, organizational leadership, health neuroscience and medicine. He is also investigating the effectiveness of positive psychology interventions on physician wellness/burnout. He is currently an Adjunct Professor at La Roche College teaching the class “How to Flourish: Lessons from Positive Psychology”. He is the author of the Amazon #1 Best Seller Positive Philosophy: Ancient and Modern Wisdom to Create a Flourishing Life released in the fall of 2018.  Dr. Katyal lives with his family in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His hobbies include kayaking, writing, and traveling.

As a practicing radiologist and physician executive for the past 18 years, Dr. Katyal understands the pressures that many physicians face as we move away from traditional fee for service and toward more value based payment models. As Senior Vice President of Clinical and Strategic Services at a rapidly growing startup radiology company for 10 years, Dr. Katyal has developed and implemented an innovative, highly efficient physician workflow that resulted in higher quality, improved focus, lower fatigue and very high job satisfaction. This week we decided to have a conversation on the importance of breaking our biases. Today's society can can be divisive and individuals are unwilling to engage in open dialogue with others whose opinions differ from their own. As a podcast, we are dedicated to creating spaces that foster honest & open dialogue, and we were super excited to have this conversation. Not only to inspire you to be better in your communication, but to challenge ourselves to be better as well.  Here are two articles for you to reference:  Active Listening: The Art of Empathetic Conversation published by Positive Psychology Program and Six Ways to Break Your Implicit Bias Patterns  published by the Culture Wizard. We also encourage you to take an implicit bias test, published Harvard University to reveal any hidden biases you may hold. Follow this link to see what may be underneath the surface: Project Implicit.  We questioned and discussed the root causes of certain biased attitudes in regards to race, politics, and religion, and what is at risk when we do not take the time to learn how to have productive dialogues with people that hold differing views.  We also noted, having a bias is not necessarily a negative thing. It only becomes problematic when you allow your bias to be a basis for discriminatory behaviors or judgmental actions towards certain groups or individuals in society. We hope this episode encourages you to do some self-inventory and reflect on our your own biases. The moment we are made aware of something, is the moment we are one step closer to changing it.
