Join us for a powerful conversation on how to navigate challenges, embrace growth, and lead with purpose.Key Leadership Applications from the Episode: 1. Problem-Solving is Core to LeadershipOne of the greatest lessons shared by these leaders is the ability to solve problems effectively. In EMS, where unexpected challenges arise daily, leaders must learn to think critically and adapt swiftly. Developing problem-solving skills early is essential for navigating crises and making sound decisions. 2. Continuous Learning is a Lifelong PracticeThe leaders agreed they would have prioritized intentional learning earlier in their careers. Their advice? Start reading leadership books and listening to podcasts as soon as possible. Leadership isn't something you master once; it's a lifelong commitment to growth and improvement. 3. Listening is More Powerful Than SpeakingAspiring leaders should focus on listening more than talking. Great leaders learn from others by asking thoughtful questions and listening to advice from those with more experience. Building relationships and learning from others' successes and failures can fast-track leadership growth. 4. Be Intentional in Building Your Leadership SkillsLeadership doesn't happen by accident. Aspiring EMS leaders should actively seek out mentorship, engage in self-improvement, and take every opportunity to learn from others. Leadership is about making purposeful efforts to grow both personally and professionally.
Merlin Miller preaches a message entitled Be Intentional, sharing a special focus for 2025 for the congregation. This focus will be explored more in various ways throughout the year. The theme verse is Colossians 3:17.
Becoming a Peacemaker: Finding Peace Within and Sharing It With the World In this special Christmas episode of ”The Human Intimacy Podcast”, Dr. Kevin Skinner and his colleague, MaryAnn Michaelis, explore what it means to be a true peacemaker. While the holidays are often a time of joy, they can also bring stress, conflict, and hurt. Dr. Martin Seligman's Work on Gratitude and Happiness: - Books: ”Authentic Happiness” and “Flourish” - Highlighting the link between gratitude and higher levels of happiness. 4. It's the day after in a country that is divided, split, and left with a whirlwind of emotion. In times like these, it's easy to get swept up in the noise and negativity. But what if, instead of getting pulled down, we could use this as fuel to rise higher? What if we could shift our focus from what's out of our control to what we can influence in our own lives, families, and communities?Whether you're feeling empowered or frustrated, today's episode is all about taking those feelings and channeling them into real, positive change. Here are five key takeaways from this episode:Control the ControllablesIn times of uncertainty, especially post-election, focus on what's within your control. Rather than being swept up by external events and media-driven negativity, manage your reactions, attitudes, and behaviors. By controlling your own “sphere of influence,” you can create positive ripples in your immediate surroundings.Community Starts with Each of UsReal change doesn't come from top-down authority but from our actions within our homes, neighborhoods, and circles. Engaging with those around us—even those who think differently—fosters true community and bridges divisions. Start with empathy and help, not division.Be Intentional with Media and Social InteractionThe news and social media often amplify division and discord. To maintain a positive mindset, intentionally limit exposure to these platforms and avoid content that stirs up unnecessary conflict. Seek out face-to-face, genuine interactions and put more focus on being present in your community.Don't Coast Through the End of the YearNovember and December are prime months to make an impact, both personally and professionally. While others may slow down, lean into this “separation season.” Start now to build momentum for the new year rather than waiting until January, and use this time to create strong habits and meaningful connections.Seek AccountabilityAchieving consistency in personal growth often requires accountability. Having an accountability partner can keep you focused on your goals—whether that's going to the gym or taking on new challenges. Lifting each other up with shared energy and positivity can create a powerful foundation for lasting change.
Today's encore episode is all about your choice to avoid regrets in midlife. Notice the word “choice.” It's common in midlife to start to worry about having regrets. When you get close to turning 50 or you're in your 50s or older, many women in the middle start to be more concerned that they may regret what they haven't done, having tried, haven't said or haven't prioritized. If you have been enjoying the show, I would appreciate it if you would leave a review wherever you are listening! And as always, your questions, comments and feedback are welcome. Write me at norman@runwithhorses.net. And now, on with the show... (27:00) ******* (27:00) Habits – Fellowship Acts 2:40-42 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation.” 41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. 42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. Hebrews 10:24-25 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. (23:00) ****** (23:00) MY WORKING DEFINITION OF CHURCH A CHURCH is a group of followers of Jesus who worship Him in spirit and truth, humbly offering their lives as living sacrifices, together living out the MISSION of Jesus as His witnesses TO THE WORLD, by sharing the gospel and making disciples through teaching obedience to His commands as they edify and EQUIP OTHERS to join them on HIS MISSION. The discipleship pathway is an intentional plan to equip others to be on the mission of Jesus. Don't forget the goals of the pathway. What are the goals of a discipleship pathway? a. self-feeding Christians b. everyday missionaries – everyone on the mission of Jesus c. disciple-makers d. pastors e. new churches f. all members of the church, shepherded well We are still on the THIRD step in the Pathway; EQUIP ENGAGE, CONNECT, EQUIP, RELEASE What is equipping in the church? It is preparing each member of the church to use their talents, gifts, and abilities to carry out the work of the ministry throughout their lives. First, what is the WORK OF THE MINISTRY? The best simple definition I have heard is that it is the work of bringing God's message to people. We are all called and equipped, as members of the body of Christ, for this ministry. There is a further equipping, seen in Eph. 4 carried out corporately by the church as we build each other up and prepare members for ministry. Church leadership is given the responsibility of leading the way in equipping all members for service and engagement in the mission of Christ. Eph. 4:1-5 I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, 2 with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, 3 endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. (00:00) END PART 1 ******** (27:00) BEGIN PART 2 Eph. 4:11-16 11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ— 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love. Walk Worthy You are called Attitude matters – humble, loving Relationships Lead - who has God placed around you? Unity is Important The Church is key for maturity – seek, pursue Christ-likeness for everyone We all have gifts the church needs.Use yours to build up the church. The goal is maturity – Christ-likeness, nothing less We build each other up. **Be Intentional. As an Individual, and as a Church.** Pray for growth. Work toward growth. Growth/ Maturity means a life lived on the mission of Jesus. - Sharing the Good News - Teaching biblical truth - Practicing a lifestyle that puts Jesus and His mission first. Purpose and priorities! - Serve others – consider others interests and spiritual needs - Live out the one another's – you need the church - look for accountability – meet regularly with others who are on mission. - sacrifice of time and resources for the mission – live with eternal values - intentionally thinking about others. In your church, in your community. # Where are these relationships intentionally happening? Sunday School, small groups, homes of motivated disciples who constantly reach out to others to build them up, coffee shops, restaurants, etc. # Pastors – be visionary, help your people see the calling to be actively engaged in disciple making, make sure your church provides training and space to live out that calling! From the pulpit – vision, theology, motivation In the smaller groups – training, skills, encouragement In the smallest groups – support, accountability and personal direction, training as needed. (5:00) ********* (5:00) DOCTRINE August – Jesus September – Holy Spirit Jesus Intercessor intercede - to intervene between parties with a view to reconciling differences : mediate Romans 8:31-35 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall bring a charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? Hebrews 7:23-25 Also there were many priests, because they were prevented by death from continuing. 24 But He, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. 25 Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. 1 John 2:1-2 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. **(1:00)** As a member of God's family you have a part to play in preparing God's people for ministry. Prayerfully consider how God wants to use you to build up you church family and strengthen them for service. And stop to think, what is your role in the mission of Jesus to the world? In this special episode of the Savvy Painter podcast, we're celebrating an incredible milestone: 10 years of being part of your art journey! Over the last decade, I've had the joy of connecting with so many amazing artists, sharing stories, struggles, and, most importantly, lessons. So, I thought, what better way to celebrate than to share my top 10 lessons from 10 years of Savvy Painter? These are the gems I've gathered from talking with hundreds of artists and diving deep into the art world. Let's dive in! What's on Your Canvas Reflects What's in Your Mind: The biggest game-changer for me was realizing how directly our thoughts shape our art. It's all about noticing how your feelings and thoughts come alive on your canvas through your brushstrokes. Be Intentional with Your Work and Time: Having a plan isn't just about avoiding distractions; it's about setting intentions for your art and focusing on them. Even something as simple as a sticky note with your goal can make a huge difference. Your Work Matters: Always remember that your art makes a difference. Even when doubts creep in, know that what you're creating has value, both to you and to the world. Perfection Isn't Good Enough: Chasing perfection can actually hold you back. Connect with people through your art instead of getting caught up in making every detail flawless. Be Selective About Who You Let into Your Studio: Not every voice deserves a say in your creative space. Keep out the negativity and focus on the positive influences that help you grow as an artist. The Four Stages of Your Practice: Embrace the cycle of making art, showing it, selling it, and then resting. Recognizing and honoring each stage is key to a fulfilling art practice. Community Is Key: Never underestimate the power of being part of a community of artists. It's comforting to know you're not alone in your artistic journey. Advocate for Your Work: Believing in your own art is the first step to getting others to believe in it too. Learn to talk about your work with confidence and love. Stay Out of Your Collectors' Wallets: Pricing your art isn't about guessing what others can afford; it's about valuing your work appropriately and letting the buyers decide for themselves. Love the Art and the Artist Who Creates It: This journey is all about love—loving the process, the creation, and, most importantly, yourself as the creator. Your art is a love letter to yourself, so cherish it and the person who brings it to life. Celebrating 10 years with you has been such an honor. Your stories, feedback, and the community we've built together have made Savvy Painter more than just a podcast; it's a shared space of inspiration and growth. Here's to many more years of painting, learning, and growing together. Thank you for being a part of this incredible journey!
In today's episode, I'm joined by Jessica Medina, who graduated from Columbia Law School in 2004 as a single mom of twins with over $200,000 in student loans, and went straight to work at a BigLaw firm. After eight years in private practice, she switched roles and became Senior Counsel at the Division of Enforcement with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. She left that role to work in the financial industry in a different way and is now an Accredited Financial Counselor who teaches other lawyers how to use their money to finance their dream lives. In today's conversation, Jessica shares her personal journey and professional insights, offering invaluable guidance for lawyers who have the pressures of BigLaw life, are paying student loans, and generating a high income, but want to achieve financial stability and freedom. A Few Takeaways… 1. Be Intentional with Career and Financial Choices: Understand why you are in your current position and align your actions with your long-term goals. This means making strategic decisions about lifestyle and finances to avoid getting trapped in a situation that doesn't align with your future aspirations. 2. Understand the Impact of Lifestyle on Finances: Many lawyers spend on convenience due to time constraints, which can lead to unintentional financial strain. Being mindful about where your money goes, especially as your salary increases, so that you can prevent unnecessary financial stress. 3. Prepare for Career Transitions with Financial Planning: If you're considering a shift in your career, especially one that might result in lower income, it's crucial to prepare financially. This might involve downsizing or re-evaluating your spending to make the transition smoother. 4. Seek Professional Guidance for Financial Management: Many lawyers lack formal education in personal finance management. Seeking advice from financial professionals can provide clarity, help in developing a comprehensive plan for managing debt (like student loans), and aid in aligning your spending with your life priorities. You finally left your narcissistic partner and find yourself a single parent. (Let's be real here, you were basically a single parent before) And being a single parent is HARD!You're working, maintaining a home, helping with homework, planning meals, driving to the extra curricular activities, and more. And, you likely also have a full time job mitigating everything that comes up during post separation abuse. So, is there a way to get it all done and save your sanity? There is a way. In this episode, I am going to share some strategies that you can use to start to find some balance in a life where there is not enough time and plenty of stress. Here are my top 10 tips to finding some balance and sanity as you manage everything that single parenting and post separation abuse brings.Be Intentional. You will need to use this intentionality through out the other strategies on this list in order to make your decisions about what is important now and which strategy will give you the biggest bang for your buck.Compartmentalize so that the tough stuff does not bleed into other areas of your life.Simplify. What areas in your life can you eliminate or automate things? Another questions you can ask yourself (courtesy of Pat Flynn) is “If this were easy, what would it look like?”Structure and Routines. Nope this is not sexy, but having routines and structure prevents decision fatigue.Break the “rules” of parenting occasionally. I know this one causes fear of retribution within the family court system, and there are some things you can do to decrease the amount of things you need to take on on any given day.Make your free time meaningful and intentional. Make sure to add little pockets of peace or joy into your free time instead of filling it solely with dishes and laundry.Set Boundaries. It is important that you know what matters to you now, and what is a “Yes” and what is a “No.”Quality time vs Quantity time with your children. The quality of your time with your children is much more important than the amount of time spent.Build your support system. Having safe people to vent to, strategize with, laugh with, and ask for help will do wonders for you if you are overwhelmed.Ask for Help. After you have safe people in your inner circle it is possible that you can take something off your plate by asking for help.Rising Beyond Podcast episodes on boundaries:Ep 18: Boundary Setting 101: Tips for setting boundaries after an abusive relatioIf you want to chat more about this topic I would love to continue our conversation over on Instagram! @risingbeyondpcIf you've been looking for a supportive community of women going through the topics we cover, head over to our website to learn more about the Rising Beyond Community. - https://www.risingbeyondpc.com/ And if you want to support the show you may do so here at, Buy Me A Coffee. Did you hear my episode with Karen Ehman that I recorded back in 2020? It is one of my favorite books of hers; it is called *Listen, Love, Repeat: Other-Centered Living in a Self-Centered World. Her book encourages us to be more intentional and live alert. Taking our eyes off ourselves and placing them on others, we can “become a noticer” and scatter love and kindness. I cannot wait for you to hear her share about a heartdrop; honestly, it is my favorite part. Book Recommendation: *Soul Keeping by John Ortberg Karen Ehman is a New York Times bestselling author, a Proverbs 31 Ministries speaker, and a writer for Encouragement For Today, an online devotional that reaches over 4 million users daily. She has written 14 books and Bible studies including *Keep It Shut: What to Say, How to Say It; When to Say Nothing at All, *Zip It: The Keep It Shut 40 Day Challenge and *Keep Showing Up: How to Stay Crazy in Love You're your Love Drives You Crazy. Karen has been featured on numerous media outlets including TODAY Parents, FoxNews.com, Redbook.com, Crosswalk.com, and HomeLife Magazine. Her passion is to help women to live their priorities as they reflect the gospel to a watching world. Married to her college sweetheart, Todd, and the mother of three, she enjoys collecting vintage kitchenware, cheering for the Detroit Tigers, and feeding the many people who gather around her kitchen island for a taste of Mama Karen's cooking.
