Riding Shotgun With Charlie #218 Jacek Waliszewki Code Name: Spike, Author   Sometimes the planets all line up for me. I was in Knoxville, TN, for the Gun Owners of America's G.O.A.L.S event. I was talking with Kirk Whatley from Samson Mfg. Kirk has been a friend for a long time. He was RSWC #005 back when I was learning how to edit video. Samson's booth was across from Liberty Mfg's booth. They have a pen gun. And at their booth was Jacek Waliszewski, author of Code Name: Spike.    Jacek was born in Poland but he was raised in a revolution. His father co-founded the Solidarity Movement there and they kicked communism out of Poland. As an infant, his mother would put propaganda papers in his diapers that he would take to his father while he was locked up. It all had to be done before he soiled the diaper! He was muling documents for his father to read and sign. The family eventually came to the United States as political refugees during the Reagan years.   After moving around the country with his father's job, Jacek joined the Army and went into Special Forces. He spent 20 years serving the country and he's working on his second career and spending time with his own family. His second career finds him as a writer. He's authored a book called Code Name: Spike. He was at the Liberty Mfg booth promoting his book because Liberty has a pen gun. And a story in his book involves the first real life use of a pen gun.    Going from Special Forces medic to Special Forces warrant officer, he got to spend time in the Nation Archives. Near George Washington's flag and maps from Normandy, still with sand in them, he finds a leather bound book. The book was written by two men in the Office of Strategic Services back in 1946. The CIA didn't declassify the documents until the 1980's. He wondered how this memoir existed and no one knew about it. When they tried to publish it in 1946, the CIA and the State Department refused to let them release these secrets into the public.    Jacek spent five years researching and working on this book. He cross referenced their Morse code messages. It even took him to England, where he found their secret Morse code messages. After chasing the background around the world, the Department of Defense finally cleared everything for the publication of the book.    One of the truly amazing things he did was reach out to the surviving family members of Steven Bizic & Joseph S. Kosky to let them know about the history of their fathers and grandfathers. That involved hundreds of calls and emails to find everyone. The family members didn't know these stories because they were super secret.  And it was a time when men didn't talk about what they did during war. He had a chance to bring their lives full circle with this book.    It's amazing that he discovered the things that formed Special Operations. The OSS was the foundation of many of the other groups like Spec Ops and CIA. The stories could also change the history of the communists. There's stories about how they would confiscate firearms from people, who would hand them over, because they think they're doing the right thing. Then they immediately found out that the partisans were the judge, jury, and executioner. The people who surrendered their guns would then be shot with their own firearms as punishment. In another chapter, he talks about how the OSS were able to derail a train which ended up taking the lives of 200 Nazis. This book reads like a novel. But a true history book that will keep you riveted and reading. To top it off, his next book is going to be how the same group of OSS were plotting to take out Mussolini. Somewhere, someone has Mussolini's pistol.   Favorite quotes: “I like to say I was born into revolution.” “It's the first Special Operations memoir written after the war.” “This book reveals all the things we did wrong in the war.” “To give back to the Special Operations community, this is the legacy book.”  “It's more disturbing to know that it's true.” Stories By Jack website https://www.storiesbyjacek.com/   Jacek Waliszewski on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/jw_jack_official/   Liberty Mfg https://www.liberty-mfg.us/   Code Name: Spike on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/CODE-NAME-SPECIAL-FORCES-GROUNDBREAKING/dp/B0D52QP3G3   Second Amendment Foundation https://secure.anedot.com/saf/donate?sc=RidingShotgun    Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/     Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters.    Dennis McCurdy Author, Speaker, Firewalker http://www.find-away.com/   Self Defense Radio Network http://sdrn.us/   Buy a Powertac Flashlight, use RSWC as the discount code and save 15% www.powertac.com/RSWC   SABRE Red Pepper Spray  https://lddy.no/1iq1n   Or listen on: iTunes/Apple podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/riding-shotgun-with-charlie/id1275691565

Exploring Norman Holmes Pearson's legacy, with Greg Barnhisel

Norman Holmes Pearson, who in the middle years of the twentieth century was a professor of English and American Studies at Yale University, is now a largely forgotten figure — and someone who was never that well known during his lifetime. But Duquesne University professor Greg Barnhisel, in his intriguing new biography of Pearson, sees him as a critical figure in several important areas of American life and culture. Code Name Puritan: Norman Holmes Pearson at the Nexus of Poetry, Espionage, and American Power, demonstrates how Pearson was an important force in legitimizing American modernism (particularly in literature) as a significant cultural enterprise and subject of academic study. During World War II, Pearson was a prominent agent working for the Office of Strategic Services (the predecessor of the Central Intelligence Agency) as head of Anglo-British counterintelligence operations. And Pearson also was a key player in establishing American Studies as an academic discipline and helping to promulgate its study overseas as part of a larger effort to promote American interests abroad during the Cold War.  In this podcast discussion, Barnhisel discusses how Pearson's physical disability — what was then called a defect or deformity — may have given him greater receptivity toward the cultural dissidents of the modernist movement, certainly compared to other members of his Puritan-descended WASP class. Barnhisel focuses on Pearson's close relationships with authors including W. H. Auden and especially H.D., one of the handful of women poets who were important in pre-World War I avant-garde circles and who has come to be recognized as a central figure in the history of modernist literature.Pearson forged a relationship with H.D. and her partner, the English novelist Bryher, when he was stationed in London during World War II as head of the X-2 counterintelligence agency. Barnhisel analyzes what made humanist academics like Pearson effective as intelligence agents and how their influence carried over to academia after the war. Barnhisel also discusses the creation of the American Studies discipline, its relationship to the Cold War, and how Pearson's view of the importance of institutions would become increasingly marginalized within the discipline as it moved leftward following the 1960s. Ultimately, Barnhisel feels that Pearson's experiences and consideration of his Puritan background marked him as a man of the Vital Center: “As a neo-Puritan, Pearson felt that the stability and meaning provided by institutions had to be balanced with the dynamism and fertility of the creative individual mind. He was wary of the conformity that an organization-dominated society engendered.”

Dive into the dark corridors of history with "Mind Over Matter: Unveiling the Shadows," a podcast that peels back the layers of secrecy surrounding the U.S. intelligence agencies' 30-year quest for mind control. From the mystical rites in remote Mexican villages to the seedy underbelly of San Francisco's brothels, we uncover the chilling experiments that sought to bend human will. Join us as we explore how LSD came to influence the 1960s counterculture through a series of missteps and covert operations by the CIA. Through interviews with experts, dramatic reenactments, and deep dives into declassified documents, we unravel a story that blurs the lines between ethical boundaries and national security. "Mind Over Matter" isn't just a history lesson; it's a journey into the depths of human psychology and power. Engage with us as we explore the most controversial experiments that shaped a crucial era in espionage and cultural transformation.(00:01-00:53) U.S. intelligence agencies embarked on a 30-year quest to perfect mind control, crossing ethical boundaries by involving brothels, mystical rituals, and even brain implantation in bulls for experimental control.(03:05-04:17) The quest began during World War II with the OSS (Office of Strategic Services), led by General "Wild Bill" Donovan. They explored unconventional and extreme methods including mind control under the leadership of Stanley Lovell, who sought to push American scientists beyond ethical norms.(06:04-07:29) George White, an OSS captain, played a significant role in the early and continuing efforts at mind control using various substances like mescaline, scopolamine, and marijuana on unwitting subjects, seeking an elusive "truth drug."(09:59-11:59) The CIA continued the search for mind control into the 1950s, discovering LSD, which they believed might be the answer to controlling human behavior. This discovery led to both covert LSD testing on unwitting Americans and explorations into other substances like magic mushrooms in Mexico.(18:57-20:12) The investigation and misuse of LSD by the CIA inadvertently contributed to the counterculture movement of the 1960s, with figures like Dr. Timothy Leary promoting the substance, which had escaped into public consumption through flawed CIA operations.

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates edition. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and I'm so glad you're joining us today. At the height of World War II, the United States faced one of its greatest challenges: the urgent need for intelligence to help win the war against Nazi Germany. But who would answer the call? Soldiers and generals were obvious choices, but what if I told you that some of the most effective spies weren't military men at all? What if some of the heroes behind enemy lines were actually scholars, librarians, and literature professors? It sounds like something out of a spy novel, but it's true. Today, we have a fascinating and thought-provoking episode that will take us deep into one of the most unexpected stories of World War II. Our guest is historian Elyse Graham, here to share insights from her remarkable new book Book and Dagger: How Scholars and Librarians Became the Unlikely Spies of World War II. Elyse's research uncovers how the U.S. Office of Strategic Services, the precursor to the CIA, turned to academia—recruiting some of the sharpest minds from American universities to carry out top-secret operations. These “bookworms” went undercover, decoding enemy communications, hunting spies, and gathering intelligence that helped change the course of the war. Among them were Joseph Curtiss, a literature professor who tracked down German agents, and Adele Kibre, an archivist who smuggled valuable documents out of neutral Sweden—while the world watched in suspense. This story is not just a testament to the power of knowledge, but a reminder of how intellectual curiosity and a love of books can make a real difference in the world—even in times of war.So, what can we learn from these brilliant, unexpected spies? How did their work shape modern intelligence and even American higher education? And why is this story so relevant today, as libraries and the humanities face increasing pressure?Today, Elyse Graham will answer these questions and more, as we explore the incredible story of how bookworms helped beat the Nazis.Stay tuned—it's an episode you won't want to miss.My thanks to Dr. Elyse Graham for her generous time and check out Dr. Graham's upcoming Smithsonian Associates presentation titled, “How Bookworms Beat The Nazis.” Check our show notes today for more information about Dr. Graham's Smithsonian Associates presentation. My thanks to Smithsonian for all their support of the show. My thanks to Executive Producer Sam Heninger. My thanks to you, our Smithsonian Associates audience on radio and podcast. If you're listening to this podcast, chances are you've heard stories about the CIA's experiments with drugs, particularly LSD, during the infamous MKUltra program. But you may not know that the characters involved in that dubious effort connect to one of the 20th Century's most famous and revered scientists, the anthropologist Margaret Mead. Shane Harris talked with historian Benjamin Breen about this new book, Tripping on Utopia, which tells the story of how Mead and her close circle launched a movement to expand human consciousness, decades before the counterculture of the 1960s popularized, and ultimately stigmatized, psychedelic drugs. Mead and Gregory Bateson--her collaborator and one-time husband--are at the center of a story that includes the WWII-era Office of Strategic Services, a shady cast of CIA agents and operatives, Beat poets, and the pioneers of the Information Age. Psychedelics are having a renaissance, with federal regulators poised to legalize their use - Breen's book is an engrossing history that explores the roots of that movement and how it influenced and collided with the U.S. national security establishment.  G. Edward Griffin interviews Norman Dodd, who was the congressional Director of Research for the Reece Committee, 1953-1954. In 1953, Congress tasked Rep. Carroll Reece with establishing and directing a congressional investigative committee to investigate the activities of the major Wall Street tax-exempt foundations – Carnegie, Ford and Rockefeller – on the ground of suspicions of subversion. The Reece Committee was thus created. The Committee's investigation involved numerous interviews and the thorough study of these foundations' private records, on site. It determined the foundations' activities to be unamerican and subversive, and to consist of the use of propaganda, influence and grant making power to control the channels of social influence (media, advertising, etc.) and, thus, public opinion, but also to control education, and to infiltrate institutions and co-opt nexuses of power.A key aspect in all this was the debasement of education and its transformation into a vehicle of indoctrination. Also essential, the use of social influence and institutional power to advance socialist legislation and globalist policies, as well as to bring about the incremental destitution of Congress (it being the truly representative body of government) – and the simultaneous empowerment of the executive branch towards semi-autocratic standards. After all, it's easier to run the government when most power is concentrated in the executive, and you covertly run the executive, and the president, from behind the scenes. The declared aim was to create a silent, non-bloody revolution in the United States. The purpose was also, ostensibly, to degrade and debase the population to make them more manageable and controllable. If you're debased and dissolute you won't care about the takeover of society, won't stand for principle, and won't join with others to fix stuff. You will, in fact, help take down the fabric of society by means of inept, degraded interpersonal behavior. Also, if the focus of your concerns is whether you feel good, special and cool, have nice things for yourself, etc., then you're easily controlled by those who have the power to either give you candy, or to chastise and punish you. You're fit for social control, and that's what these foundation characters knew.Yet, there was more. As Rowan Gaither, the director of the Ford Foundation, explained to Norman Dodd: «All of us here have at one time or another served in the OSS [the Office of Strategic Services, forerunner of the CIA], or the European Economic Administration, operating under directives from the White House. We [still] operate under those same directives. The substance of the directives under which we operate is that we should use our grant making power to so alter life in the United States that we can be comfortably merged with the Soviet Union

On Friday February 25th, 1944 "Big Week," the allies six-day strategic bombing campaign against the Third Reich ended with a successful bombing of German cities Rostock and Augsburg, as well as several Dutch cities near the German border. Unfortunately, many civilians were killed or left homeless. The Germans also lost more than three-hundred-fifty aircrafts, and most importantly, more than one-hundred pilots. Meanwhile two large Japanese ships were torpedoed, killing five-thousand Japanese soldiers, but also thirty-five hundred Japanese laborers and hundreds of allied POWs. On Saturday the 26th, more than six-hundred Soviet bombers raided Helsinki. That day at 1:45 PM, NBC's War Telescope signed on at 1:45PM eastern time. With the U.S. congress squabbling, Europe looked on. On Sunday February 27th, The U.S. Office of Strategic Services began Operation Ginny I with the objective of blowing up railway tunnels in Italy to cut German lines of communication. The mission failed when the OSS team landed in the wrong place and couldn't locate the tunnel. That same day, the Soviets massacred more than seven-hundred villagers in Chechnya they deemed non transportable. On Monday the 28th, the German 14th Army mounted new attacks against the U.S. VI Corps at Anzio, while also massacring roughly one thousand ethnic Poles in the village of Huta Pieniacka. Although the tide of war was slowly turning, there were atrocities and accidents on both sides, and neither the Allies or the Axis was fighting a pristine campaign. Regardless, Europe understood that in a post war world, if victory was achieved, the U.S. needed to be a main part of whatever League of Nations could be built after, while the U.S. didn't yet fully grasp just how much responsibility the country would have in rebuilding Europe.

"When history looks back," Wiesenthal explained, "I want people to know the Nazis weren't able to kill millions of people and get away with it." His work stands as a reminder and a warning for future generations.   Very few of the prisoners survived the westward trek through Plaszow, Gross-Rosen and Buchenwald, which ended at Mauthausen in upper Austria. Weighing less than 100 pounds and lying helplessly in a barracks where the stench was so strong that even hardboiled SS guards would not enter, Wiesenthal was barely alive when Mauthausen was liberated by the 11th Armored Division of the Third U.S. Army on May 5, 1945. As soon as his health was sufficiently restored, Wiesenthal began gathering and preparing evidence on Nazi atrocities for the War Crimes Section of the United States Army.
