Join me today as we unpack the most common cognitive distortions and how they show up in infertility and IVF—so you can spot them, soften them, and shift your inner narrative.
Every single one of us is guilty of using some pretty common forms of Stinkin' Thinkin' at times. Psychologists use fancier word to describe Stinkin' Thinkin'… we call them Cognitive Distortions. Thinking Traps are also words to describe negative thoughts because they often leave us feeling TRAPPED on a hamster wheel of negative thoughts that spin out and result in negative feelings and ultimately result in unhealthy behaviors. I had a patient say it much more clearly… she told me, “Negative thoughts result in negative behaviors.” Enough said! Therefore, we need to become aware of the Cognitive Distortions we use most frequently and employ the skills from last week's episode to change our thoughts and therefore change our behavior. BECAUSE… Healthy thoughts lead to Healthy Behaviors! Let's get started and face the truth!Resources:BariAfterare: www.bariaftercare.comConnie Stapleton PhD website: www.conniestapletonphd.comBariAftercare website: https://www.conniestapletonphd.com/bariaftercareBariAftercare Facebook page (for members only): https://www.facebook.com/groups/BariAftercareKevin Stephens: Your Bariatric Buddy https://www.facebook.com/groups/yourbariatricbuddy/peopleInstagram: @cale101 (Caleshia Haynes)Instagram: @therealbariboss (Tabitha Johnson)Instagram @drsusanmitchell (Dr. Susan Mitchell)Instagram: @lauraleepreston (Laura Preston)ProCare Vitamins (10% off with code ConnieStapleton)Rob DiMedio: https://www.busybariatrics.com/Dr. Joan Brugman: drjbrugman@outlook.comDr. Susan Mitchell:https://www.facebook.com/DrSusanMitchellhttps://www.facebook.com/bariatricsurgerystrategiesCognitive Behavior Worksheets:https://www.mentallyfitpro.com/c/free-therapy-worksheets/cognitive-behavioral-therapy-cbt-worksheetshttps://www.therapistaid.com/therapy-worksheet/abc-model-for-rebt50 Common Cognitive Distortions Alice Boyes Ph.D.15 Types of Cognitive Distortions/Worksheet10 Common Types of Cognitive DistortionsPlease subscribe to the show and rate it on Apple Podcasts, download free information at www.connie

Welcome to Episode 304 of The Joe Martino Show. Today, we're going to continue a topic that doesn't get enough attention—men grieving. Grief is hard enough, but for men, it's often complicated by cultural expectations and personal struggles. Too many guys hear, “Man up” instead of, “How are you holding up?” When called out, one wife responded to say that those calling her out were wrong. Let's be honest, our world is messy. People are hurting, but instead of listening, we often get caught in cognitive distortions—filtering reality through our pain and assumptions. Some folks even get mad that this podcast isn't just their perspective on the world. That's not how growth works. We need honest, messy conversations to navigate life, and that's what we're doing today. Let's talk about it.
Send us a textWhat are "Cognitive Distortions"? Incorrect or irrational thoughts and patterns of thinking can really derail and demotivate you during your recovery/rehabilitation after injury or surgery. Cognitive Distortions are these irrational thoughts that are so common in the day-to-day. Some examples include catastrophizing, magical thinking, and minimizing but tune into the podcast to learn how you can stay motivated and avoid the discouragement and despair that can happen when you are tuning in to the wrong message - that's a cognitive distortion. Are you listening to me?'I do a strange thing with everyone of my Sex Addiction clients. Multi-talented as I am, I do brain surgery on each one. (Mine is a bit crude and I don't use anaesthesia!) I cut off the top of the skull of each of my clients. I lift their brain out of their skull and put it on the chair next to them. (Don't forget to take it with you when you leave client). Why do I do something so bizarre like that? I want to highlight the fact that in Sex Addiction work, your brain is NOT necessarily your best friend. It will sabotage. It will work against you. (At least initially, until it gets to know and like the repeated good outcomes and also built-in 'Treats & Rewards').It does not like me the Therapist. It does not trust me and is cautioning you against me. After-all, you are working with me to dismantle and take away a coping strategy which your brain gave you all those many years ago - which it believes 'works' and has been 'working' for many years, to manage you; the Addiction. Here is what a further conversation with your brain on the other chair, might sound like: "They work. So why are you and that busy-body Therapist seeking to dismantle them? Even worse; I don't know what you are going to replace them with and so why should I trust you, work with you and help you? I am going to put up a fight and give you Cognitive Distortions. That will dilute the truth of your situation(s), so that you give up this Recovery Programme attempt at changing what works - good enough all those past years''.Your brain on the other chair has diluted and trivialised the shame impact, the damage caused and the poorer quality of life. In this episode, Therese Markow and Dr. Elizabeth Scott discuss the impact of cognitive distortions on stress. Dr. Scott explains what cognitive distortions are, how they lead to increased stress and emotional difficulties and gives examples of different types of distortions. They discuss how the distortions can be mitigated. They also talk about why addressing cognitive distortions is crucial for mental and physical health, reducing stress, and improving overall well-being. Finally, Dr. Scott provides free or minimal cost resources to help you change cognitive distortions and regain power over your mind. Key Takeaways: Cognitive distortions are patterns of thinking that skew our perception of reality. They are shortcuts of the brain, but they aren't always accurate and can lead to increased stress and emotional difficulties. Cognitive distortions often prevent us from enjoying the good things in life through distortions such as catastrophizing, jumping to conclusions, emotional reasoning, or disqualifying the positive, among many others. Your brain's attempt to protect you from disappointment and from setting yourself up to be hurt can actually create stress. Remember, stress response is triggered when our mind thinks there's a threat, whether there is one or not. Over time, we can rewire our brains to think more positively and accurately. Intentionally focusing on the things that are going well and moments of gratitude, will help your brain to help notice the good as well as the bad. It is never too early to teach children about thoughts and recognizing patterns. "Once we can identify these distortions, we can challenge them and begin to think more realistically and positively." — Dr. Elizabeth Scott Check out Dr. Scott's link for a new course Designed for anyone tired of being held back by negative thought loops. Our unconscious cognitive distortions ruin our marriages. They drive our Right-vs-Wrong righteousness in arguments where we might win the fight, but lose the marriage. The masculine practice is knowing not every thought is created equally. Some thoughts are helpful to follow. The majority, our cognitive distorted thoughts, are destructive to follow. Included in this episode: Predisposed outlooks we see in the world around us. Patterns of thinking or beliefs Tendencies that are inaccurate or untrue The potential to inflict psychological harm Admitting you have false beliefs and distorted thoughts may be terrifying but no good comes from relieving these facilities daily. Cognitive reframing/restructuring Modifying behavior and core belief systems More positive and productive thoughts Types of Cognitive Distortions: Polarization of thoughts: a person creates acute thoughts surrounding polar opposite groups and ignores median steps with unrealistic proportions. Ex: thinking in extremes. “I'm never going to lose weight because I am broken/my metabolism is broken” Selective filtration: the one affected eliminates all positive events and deflects the attention to only the negative. They take comfort in the negative. Only sees their failure and considers their life a mess. They revisit the scenarios in their life that they fear the most/feel the most negative. Time consuming and keeps you from seeing the small wins necessary to take you from step to step in the weight loss process. “When I was little I was bullied for being overweight and that affects my body image to this day. I will continue to be criticized for my body whether I do the criticizing or others do it. No matter what, I am constantly thinking about my body and how negative the experience is to live in my own skin”. Overgeneralization: the one negative incident will become the normal ending for all other situations. They think something bad will happen every time, over and over again. No agency over outcomes. “I've never been able to lose weight so why would I be able to now”. No hope. Demand and perfectionism: inflexible and strict ideas of how other people and things ought to be. “The journey should be going this way or I should lose weight every day or I should have more progress than I do”. They find something wrong in everything Consequence of this is feeling guilty and having low self esteem. Shame. They always fall short of their expectations. Leading to anger of the process. How to manage these cognitive disorders: Identify the thought, look for the alternative thinking, analyze the productivity of your thoughts. They are just habits of thinking patterns that generally get set when you are young in response to negative events. Just change the habit of the pattern to change the outcome of the thought. “Cognitive Restructuring”. Examine the evidence for the claim your thought makes and work backwards. Is this true? Am I being negative right now? Are these just big feelings right now? Find a new perspective/change your mind/gather more information. This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I'm having a bit of nerdy fun by exploring the top nine cognitive distortions I have been seeing inside my therapy practice. Surprise, but no surprise, I pull a TON of swords along with several reversed majors. Check out the cognitive distortions below and tune in to the episode to see which cards show up for each distortion! All-or-Nothing Thinking: Viewing situations in black-and-white terms, seeing things as either perfect or awful, with no middle ground, or willingness to acknowledge a “gray” area. Overgeneralization: Generalizing a single negative event to an overall pattern, leading to negative self-assessment and worldview. Mental Filter: Focusing on a single negative detail while ignoring positive aspects, leading to a pessimistic perspective. Magical Thinking: Making negative predictions about the future without sufficient evidence, treating them as facts. Believing we know what others are thinking, often assuming negative thoughts without evidence. Catastrophizing: Exaggerating the importance of negative events or minimizing positive achievements, skewing perspective. Emotional Reasoning: Accepting emotions as facts, believing that feeling something makes it true. Should Statements: Imposing unrealistic expectations on ourselves or others, leading to guilt and shame. Labeling: Assigning negative labels to ourselves or others based on a single event, often using emotionally charged language. Personalization: Blaming oneself for events beyond one's control, assuming undue responsibility for others' feelings and actions.
