Have you ever felt lonely, even when you're surrounded by people? Maybe you're a new mom who doesn't have extra resources, or someone who works full-time with no time to socialize. Too many people live without a sense of belonging or connection, and this is more deadly than we think. I'm speaking to Andy Proctor, a psychology PhD student studying how friendship and social connection impact our health. He's sharing the role social connection plays in our religion, why we underestimate the dangers of social disconnection, and his practical strategies for fostering more friendships and connections. Friends this is one of my very favorite interviews. I am so honored to reshare from the LifeBeats Library a conversation with Dawnbreaker Andy Proctor of the podcast “More Happy Life” as he honored our community by sharing something he hadn't shared publicly this fully. I know he will be met with respect and love. Andy […]
They astonished each other. Lying in the dark, later, when each thought the other had fallen asleep, Herb asked himself the question Lorna had feared: Where on earth did she get those ideas? He couldn't help wondering whether Lorna had had more experience than that provided by Andy Proctor, the hero of Chacallit. He knew about the back-seat session with Andy because Lorna had told him one evening, the same evening when he told her about Alice Mills. It had been one of those “damned confessional evenings that lovers insist on torturing themselves with,” according to May: Gad! Why do they do it? I mean — why don't they have the sense to keep quiet about things that they ought to keep quiet about? Well — it was an evening when they went rowing on the bay in the moonlight. A favorite thing of theirs to do, of course, since it reminded them of the night the ballroom burned. But of course it reminded Lorna of that night in a rowboat with Luther too. So! She was of two minds on such occasions, as you can well imagine. Oh, anyway, Herb kicked things off. Why is it that men need to confess things? Clear the air! Get things out in the open! Lay my cards on the table! Get this off my chest! Brrrr! I get chills when I hear words like that. “May, I want to get something out in the open.” No thank you! Good night! Perhaps it's just boasting, do you think? Well. Anyway, Herb told her about Whatever-her-name-was, that girl who fell in love with him while he was in France — Alice Mills. And then he told her about that strange couple — the ones he met at that gas station — you remember them. Oh, you know. Herb assumed the woman was Whoosis's daughter, but she turned out to be his wife? Arthur and Tessie Norris. Well, Herb told Lorna all that. Lorna told Herb that he didn't have to go into all of this for her sake, but he insisted. He said — and he honestly believed what he was saying — that he hoped that as the years went by Lorna would learn everything about him there was to know, since he thought it was important for a married couple not to hide anything from each other. Oooh. A ghastly idea. Ghastly. Well, Lorna — poor thing — felt she had to give something in return for all this honesty, so she gave him Andy. So to speak. Now what do you suppose happened? I'll tell you what I suppose. What always happens. They both wound up thinking, Well, there must be more. Nobody would confess everything, so there must be more. Honesty is very dangerous. As time passed, Herb and Lorna began, little by little, to invite imagination into the big pine bed. Though Herb wondered about the sources of Lorna's inspired lovemaking, he never recognized what should have been obvious, that some of the ideas had been his. Nor did he recognize Lorna's inventiveness. Jealousy made him suppose that her ideas must come from other experiences. In Topical Guide 308, Mark Dorset considers Ideas: Their Origins: Reciprocal “Inspiration” from this episode.Have you missed an episode or two or several?* You can begin reading at the beginning or you can catch up by visiting the archive or consulting the index to the Topical Guide.* You can listen to the episodes on the Personal History podcast. Chapter 8In Which Herb and Lorna Move to Babbington, New YorkTHE FIRE at the Serenity Ballroom was caused, an investigation disclosed, not by Herb and Lorna's ardor but by a kitchen accident. According to May Castle, Lorna considered the burning of the ballroom the symbolic end of her girlhood, the end of her life as a child: Oh, yes, it was the burning point of her life. Oh! I didn't mean that, not at all. I meant to say “turning point,” I honestly did. Stop. Rewind. Start again. That night was the turning point of her life, you see. And everything just happened all at once. Here she was engaged, and she'd just made love to this wonderful man — the man she was destined to live her life with — and, oh, I don't know, she may have had her first orgasm. Well! Then, to top it off, there was this perfectly spectacular fire! It was quite a night. It doesn't surprise me a bit that she decided right then that she and Chacallit were fini.“CLOSE YOUR EYES, Herb,” said Lorna, “and I'll tell you about our future.” She and Herb had driven to the top of Ackerman Hill, or as far as the road went, and they had stopped in the turnaround there. Herb had his arm around Lorna's shoulders, and she reclined against him. He closed his eyes. “All right,” he said. “Now imagine this,” said Lorna. “Six months have passed. We've been married for four. Four months ago, my father gave you a job in the sales department, and there was some talk, which you and he and I ignored as well as we could. From your very first day on the job, though, you impressed everyone, and now even the people who resented you most when you arrived have to admit that you're the best salesman they've ever seen.” Herb gave her a little squeeze. “They still talk about you behind your back, but now they usually say something like, ‘You know, I hate to admit it, but that Herb Piper is one heck of a salesman.' My father is very proud of you. So am I. I've stopped working at the mill, because you don't want my old friends to think that you can't support me. My father approves, since he never wanted me to work at the mill in the first place. I spend all day at home. My mother won't let me cook, since that's her job. However, I am permitted to wash the dishes. Every day my mother asks me if my marriage is happy and whether there's anything I need to ask her about. “You and I are still living on the third floor, and we have to whisper when we talk in bed at night. We eat dinner with my parents every evening, and after dinner we all sit together in the parlor, except on weekends, when you and I go out. Every time we go out, we run into Andy Proctor. You and Andy have become great pals. Every time he greets you he pounds you on the back, and every time he greets me he winks. “My mother and father celebrate our six-month anniversary by opening a bottle of champagne. My father announces that you've earned another promotion. We're all delighted. Then he clears his throat and tells us how very happy he and my mother are about the way things have turned out. He makes a joke about the misunderstanding when they first met you. My mother laughs. We all laugh. He says something sentimental. We all shed some tears. We eat dinner. We sit in the parlor. The clock ticks. My father nods in his chair. You and I go upstairs. We slip into bed. We are very quiet. In the dark, I whisper in your ear, ‘Herb, let's get out of here.' ” She sat upright, took Herb's face in her hands, and said, “Herb, why wait? Let's get out of here now.” “Okay,” said Herb.In Topical Guide 294, Mark Dorset considers Privacy; Secrecy; Fiction, Autobiographical: Its Secrets, Its Motives; and Family: Escaping from this episode.Have you missed an episode or two or several? You can begin reading at the beginning or you can catch up by visiting the archive or consulting the index to the Topical Guide. You can listen to the episodes on the Personal History podcast. “This is an honor!” said Bump. He grabbed Herb's hand in both of his and began pumping it. “An honor!” He raised Herb's arm in the air and said, turning to the crowd, “This is Herb Piper!” There wasn't much of a reaction to this announcement: puzzled looks, some mumbled speculation. “Herb Piper!” Bump said again, a look of incredulity on his face. “The guy from Boston who fixed those goddamned cup handles,” he said. He turned to Herb. “Boy,” he said, in an apologetic tone, “sic transit gloria mundi, huh?” But the others remembered, now, and they began to draw nearer in a circle around Herb. “Shake the hand that shook the hand of Black Jack Pershing himself,” said Bump, waving Herb's arm above the others, who pressed in for the chance to do so. “I — uh — knew you'd want to meet him,” said Andy, tugging at Bump's sleeve. “I didn't actually shake hands with — ” Herb began. Good sense made him stop. He shrugged and let the claim stand. He reached for the hands extended toward him. A couple of hours later, after they had chatted with Lorna's friends and danced and eaten pieces of lemon cake, Lorna whispered to Herb the suggestion that they rent a boat and row around on the lake in the moonlight for a while. They excused themselves, left the crowd that had gathered at their table, skirted the dance floor, and left by the door that led onto the porch. Adelaide Hooper and her sister Priscilla watched them go. When they were gone, Addy sighed and gave Priss a look that Priss understood at once. It was a look they had exchanged often, ever since they had become interested in boys. “Don't you wish — ?” asked Addy. “Oh, don't I,” said Priss. “Hey, wish what?” asked Zack Mitchell. He gave Addy a squeeze. “You're not wishing you were her, are you?” “No, it isn't that,” said Addy. “I just wish we were more like them. They're so — well — they kind of understand each other.” “We don't?” asked Zack. Addy sighed and frowned. “Did you see the way he looked at her when he came back into the hall with Andy Proctor and all those other guys? Just a little grin, but she knew what he meant by it. Priss and I can do that, but you and I — well — I wish we — I wish we — understood each other like that.” “And the way they dance together,” said Priss. “Come on,” said Zack. “They don't dance well at all.” “I know,” said Priss, “but they — oh, I know this doesn't seem to make sense, but they don't dance well the same way — the way they don't dance well is just right for them.” “I know just what you mean,” said Addy. “Well, I don't,” said Zack. He went outside for a pull at his flask. Arnold Abbot Adler, leader of the resident dance band at the Serenity Ballroom, Arnold Abbot Adler's Triple-A Orchestra, stepped to the edge of the bandstand and said, “Now, folks, we'd like to try something a little different, something that the boys and I have been working on for a long time, something we call ‘Lake Serenity Serenade.' ”In Topical Guide 292, Mark Dorset considers Partnership; Teamwork; Collaboration; Concord from this episode.Have you missed an episode or two or several? You can begin reading at the beginning or you can catch up by visiting the archive or consulting the index to the Topical Guide. You can listen to the episodes on the Personal History podcast. WHEN HERB AND LORNA walked into the ballroom, everyone fell silent, and everyone turned to stare. Herb had no difficulty identifying the particular young man. Andy Proctor hopped up from the table where he was sitting with a group of friends and admirers (a couple of whom were, to be accurate, neither friends nor admirers but young men and women who were broke and out of work and entertained hopes that Andy would get them work at Proctor's Products, lend them money, or at least pick up the tab for the evening). He bounded to the door to greet Herb and Lorna, producing exactly the effect he'd hoped for: a ripple of admiration for his big-heartedness ran around the room, and Andrew was a hero for the second time. (Elsa Burch, who had been inclined to think of him as an egotistical braggart, developed a fondness for him on the spot. Four months later they were engaged; they married the following spring. They lived together in Chacallit all their lives. Their youngest son still lives in Chacallit today. He owns the gay bar, 24-Karat Studs.) “So you're the better man,” Andy said when Lorna introduced Herb. “What do you say we step outside?” Outside, Andy leaned against the railing on the open porch that reached out over Lake Serenity. Moonlight flickered on the rippling water. He reached into his jacket pocket and produced a small sterling flask manufactured by Proctor's Products. The flask was a little outside the usual catalog of the company, but it was doing very well for them; Andy had suggested adding it to the line, and the suggestion had confirmed for his father the wisdom of grooming the boy for a future at the helm. “Drink, Herb?” Andy asked. He smiled a cheerless smile, a challenging, bellicose smile. “I will. Yes. Thanks,” said Herb. He wiped his palms on his jacket and accepted the flask. Other young men began drifting out of the ballroom and taking positions along the railing. Most made some attempt to appear to be talking among themselves, but it was clear to Herb that they had come outside not for a drink or a smoke, but to see what would happen between him and Andy. “Thanks,” Herb said, returning the flask and the smile. “Don't mention it,” said Andy. The smile again. He drank. “You enjoying yourself in Chacallit?” he asked. “Yes,” said Herb. “Yes, I am. It's a nice place.” He leaned on the railing, looking out over the lake, wishing he could think of something snappy to say. “Hey, Bump,” Andy called out. “Come over here and meet somebody.” Herb turned from the lake and saw that the invitation to “Bump” had drawn not only a large sandy-haired fellow — Bump, he supposed — but all the other young men on the porch, who drifted in his direction behind Bump. “Hello there,” said Bump. He gave Herb a nod. No smile. “This is Herb Piper,” said Andy. He smiled at Bump — the same humorless, antagonistic smile. “Herb Piper,” said Bump, pronouncing the name as if he thought it should be familiar to him. “Herb Piper,” he said again. His expression (pursed lips, twisted mouth, eyebrows drawn together) suggested that he was searching his memory for some information about Herb Piper that ought to be there. “I think I must have known a Herb Piper. You don't look familiar, but the name sounds familiar. Ever live in Albany?” “No,” said Herb. “Baltimore?” “No.” “Didn't work for the B & O, did you?” “No,” said Herb. “I've lived in Boston all along.” “Boston? Herb Piper. Herb Piper. Were you in France?” “Yes. I was in France.” “Where?” “Quelquepart-sur-Marne.” “Holy jumping Jesus!” exclaimed Bump. “Are you the guy from Boston? The one who fixed the cup handles?” “Yes,” said Herb. “That's me.”In Topical Guide 291, Mark Dorset considers Real Places, Fictional Places and Fiction: Responding to: Suspension of Disbelief from this episode.Have you missed an episode or two or several? You can begin reading at the beginning or you can catch up by visiting the archive or consulting the index to the Topical Guide. You can listen to the episodes on the Personal History podcast. In this In the trenches episode my guest Andy Proctor freely shares his own journey with mental illness and we dive into a topic on men's mental health. Andy is a PhD student studying the importance of human connection. We chat about how loneliness and social disconnection really affect men and how many men don't feel they have close, intimate relationships to support them when they are struggling. They don't have someone they can share their challenges with because of how society tells men they have to be strong, suck it up and not be "weak" and vulnerable. Andy also is the marketing director of a foundation called the "Cook Center for Human Connection." The resources the Cook Center is providing to families is going to be invaluable. Their mission (copied directly from their website) is "The mission of the Cook Center is to bring together the best organizations, programs and products to prevent suicide, provide mental health support, and enhance human connections vital for people to thrive. The foundation's current focus is on supporting children, families, and schools in eradicating suicide, as well as offering resources and support for those with mental health issues and their caregivers. This is done through a variety of grants to school, programs for parents, and global resources to bring greater awareness to the support needed for those affected by suicide." One of the initiatives the Cook Center has started is an animated series called My Life is worth living to bring awareness to educate teens and parents about suicide risk factors, and have research based prevention strategies to have as tools. It is in story format, there are 4 characters and their families that will be featured with various risk factors for suicide. It is excellent and is free on YouTube and will continue to be released over the next few months. My Live is Worth Living Another free resource the Cook Center is partnering with and providing for parents is the website Parent Guidance. They have an entire library of free online courses, opportunities to talk with therapists and coaches to learn and get guidance. From their website: "We offer education and therapeutic support to empower and give you hope as you support your child's mental health." As you can see these resources for families and children living with mental illness are invaluable and so timely. The fact that all of them are free is incredible. No, he’s not the father of happiness. But I would definitely say Andy is a cousin or a relative of it. After working selling products for a company online and learning about their mission to bring out the science of happiness, Andy went on a personal mission to discover the truths behind happiness. His journey took him to studying positive psychology and he learned that happiness is really a skillset. One that can be learned. If certain principles were applied, one could be happy. He’s studied some of the worlds leading experts on happiness, flow, empathy, connection, human flourishing, etc. Now he has a powerful message to share and is currently the CMO of the Cook Center, who’s mission it is to help children find happiness in their own lives and see that they have lives of incredible value. Andy and I met earlier this and we’ve had many amazing conversations about the truths he’s learning. We’ve had a great time sharing insights and stories with each other on this podcast. Hope you enjoy!

At the end of that 4-hour lunch and cram session I asked each to share with me/my audience one piece of advice that they felt, from their experience, was most important - the piece of advice they wanted to leave for the world, and we proceeded to think, laugh, and share our way around the circle. Stay tuned for these 7 tips on living well, from 7 people who aren’t just thinking about making a mark on the world, but are actually doing it. In Oprah’s book, What I Know for Sure, she says, “I live in the space of thankfulness - and for that, I have been rewarded a million times over. I started out giving thanks for small things, and the more thankful I became, the more my bounty increased, That’s because—for sure — what you focus on expands. When you focus on the goodness in your life, you create more of it.” I want to start out this episode acknowledging a gratefulness for these wonderful people and all the other wonderful people in the world trying to create good, do good, and make the world better, just because they can. THANK YOU. I also think that my advice, if I toss mine into this pot, involves this very topic. To create your best life story is to stay grateful. Gratitude reminds you you are supported by something bigger than yourself. Gratitude releases chemicals that make you happy, Gratitude helps you focus on the good in your life, and that brings more goodness and magic, and greater abundance. Gratitude is the key living well, in so many ways. Gratitude is a foundational tool to creating a life story that feels like it’s full of magic. Now here’s 7 more tips….Listen in to our conversation and excuse the background sounds of doorbells, background laughing and the occasional door closing. Jennifer Anderson - Listen and Act on Inspiration - just take the first step. Rachel Reist - Be present. Be here now, not longing for something past or future. Ashley Stuart- Reassess and reverse your relationship with stuff. Connect with your life style and your people and the way you want to live and then proactively bring in only what you need. Andy Proctor. - The happiness guru - I you feel like your stuck ask yourself if you’re trying to live a past dream that no longer serves you. Lindsay Kjar - Mixed Faith Marriage Coaching: Meet your own needs. Know what your desires, hope and dreams are and then figuring out how you can meet those needs on your own so you aren’t waiting for someone else to create your happiness. Mel Miller - Know that all the pieces/things you need in your life will show up. If you need to make something happen there IS a person in your life that can help you do what you need to do. Just show up with your vision and things will appear. Rachel Von neiderhausern - Remember the power of 1. Each small act/choice to help others will ripple out. Thanks for tuning in this week. This week’s challenge is to choose the piece of advise that really stood out to you, and consider how you are living it in your life. I know at least one of these suggestions probably grabbed your attention and made your mind wander into your own thoughts. Grab that piece and take two steps - 1. Think on it and why it caught your attention. 2. Act on it. What doe your gut tell you you need to do with that piece of advice. A couple announcements - in 2020 I started a new section of Love Your Story called Tell Your Story. If you are interested in collecting your story in audio format for posterity, or if you have a family member or friend that you would like privately interviewed to collect their story, contact me at loveyourstorypodcast.com (http://loveyourstorypodcast.com) and click on...

Episode 150: The Happiness Guru Is In: Interview with Andy Proctor Who doesn’t want to be happy? When you ask someone what they want in life, the most common answer is “to be happy.” Often the idea of happiness is considered one of chance, luck, or the blessed, but the truth is that your happiness depends only upon the story you create in your own mind about your life. Today’s guest is a certified positive psychology practitioner who has been teaching the science of human flourishing to mass media audiences for the past 5 years. He is the host of the More Happy Life podcast and has been featured in The New York Times, ABC News, Fox Business and many other national publications. He is currently on the board of TEDxBYU and is the director of the 1000 Words speaker series. Stay tuned for a 5 Tools for creating your own happiness and Andy Proctor’s story of how he found his way to the happiness path. We are here to thrive, not just to endure. It’s true that difficult things will happen in each of our lives. We’ll all have those dragons to fight and dark swamps to cross….it’s how we earn the magic elixir of learning and strength, but our ability to bounce back from the battles is, in the words of Andy Proctor, “One of the most important life skills we can develop.” Andy, welcome to the LYS podcast. So, you are the happiness guy. First and foremost we like a good story on this podcast, so can we head right into your story? What events in your life took place that placed your feet on the path of figuring out how to create happy? Tune in to the audio program to hear Andy’s story. What tools have you used that have had the greatest impact in your own personal life? Some of the tools Andy mentions: Morning Dance Party – I dance on my trampoline almost every day. This is in an effort to develop my strength of zest. I put my earbuds in and turn on awesome music that makes me want to dance and I imagine I am the life of the party or that I’m on stage dancing in front of a stadium of cheering fans. This generates dopamine and serotonin in my brain as well as helping me to boost BDNF levels that are like “miracle grow” for the brain. A lot of my ideas for my day come while I’m dancing. Not always, but sometimes. I do at least 3 songs. Also, rebounding for 3 minutes boosts your immune system by up to 300%. So that’s also great. Write a Letter To Yourself – I recently heard a speech by Stuart Edge where he talked about writing a letter to himself asking for advice. I thought this was so powerful so I decided to try it. On a day when I was having a rough time, I decided to write a letter to my future self (64-year-old Andy). I asked for help in dealing with some of the issues I’m trying to figure out in my life. About a week later when I was sitting quietly, I felt like my future self was trying to write back, but I was too tired to write so I went to bed and had a dream of my future life. I woke up the next morning inspired and wrote a letter back from my future self giving me advice and encouragement. There are tons of benefits to doing this. Mindfulness. Trusting your intuition. Writing can improve your mode and be a catalyst for faster healing, and better overall quality of life. Magic Wand Activity – if you had a magic wand what would you change about the world? List at least five things or as many as you can. Then write what you can do to be a part of that change during your lifetime. List as many as you can. This activity was something I found from the Stanford Greater Good Science Center to increase purpose. It really helped me to zero in on what I thought needed to happen to make the world a better place and I found real things (which I have since done) to make a dent within my sphere of influence. (working on a new anti-loneliness project, creating a course for those who struggle with their faith, etc.) Victor Frankl

Listen, we all know that practicing more mindfulness is life-changing. We know this because it's all over the internet, newspapers, and even via our nosy neighbor who is working on it, too. So why is it so hard to actually implement? That's because mindfulness is another muscle that needs to simply be trained. And training that mindfulness muscle? Anyone can do it. Andy Proctor--a happiness advocate and educator--is going to show you how. And that it can start by simply being more fully "present" with the day-to-day moments of your life. You want to finally get a handle of the runaway train that is your mind? Take heart! Just listen to this and start simple. Because we know you are no dummy! Andy Proctor, the founder of the More Happy Life online school and podcast, speaks of the Happiness Advantage: “A lot of research is coming out around the science of happiness and it shows that happiness does not just make you feel better, but it also boosts your energy, your creativity, your immune system. It improves your relationships. And it makes you more productive at work and even leads to a longer life.” Andy helps people discover their unique life mission and empowers them with online skills to share it with the world.
Studies show that chronic loneliness can be worse for your health than smoking 15 cigarettes per day. So why aren't we focusing on beating it? Today's episode is close to home for me. Andy Proctor, the one who is all about social media and connecting thousands of people and helping them to be happier, has suffered from loneliness for years. Yes, that's me. I have wrestled with this ever since I was divorced and then I really struggled with it when a mental health event created a major faith crisis for me. I didn't feel like I could reach out and I didn't know how to be when I did reach out. These 7 strategies are things that I have either practiced or I am trying to figure out how to practice, but that I believe are ways to exit the land of the lonely. I hope they help you, especially if you are a man who feels there is no way to express himself to anyone without being seen as weak or socially unacceptable. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/morehappylife/support
