Dr. Peitzmeier is a is a mixed-methods social epidemiologist focusing on gender-based violence and sexual health, particularly in marginalized populations such as LGBTQ communities and sex workers. Her current NIH-funded work focuses on intimate partner violence (IPV) in transgender populations, to better understand trans survivors' experiences and build validated tools for IPV screening in healthcare settings. Dr. Peitzmeier is also developing and testing interventions to reduce sexual assault against cisgender women and transgender undergraduates on college campuses. She is committed to community-engaged research that addresses under-researched community priorities, including her work on chest binding and health in transmasculine individuals. This work builds on her prior quantitative and qualitative research investigating the role of violence in propagating risk of HIV, HPV, and other sexual health concerns. Dr. Slawek is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Montefiore Health Systems and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, NY in the Division of General Internal Medicine. She is board certified in Infectious Diseases, Addiction Medicine, and Internal Medicine and is the Co-Director of the Montefiore Medical Cannabis Program. Dr. Slawek studies how to reduce morbidity and mortality in people with HIV (PWH) and people who use drugs (PWUD) using a harm reduction framework. She aims to study solutions for PWH and PWUD informed by her clinical experiences and patient's experiences. Dr. Slawek is the recipient of a K23 award from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to test how different formulations of medical cannabis effect neuropathic pain and inflammation in PLWH in an innovative quasi-experimental study. She is leading groundbreaking foundation-funded research to determine whether medical cannabis is effective in reducing opioid analgesic use in people with pain and is an alumnus of our Get That Grant® coaching program! In this episode, Dr. Slawek shares her passion for HIV research, the social justice aspects of her work, the transformative power of coaching and: The value of carving out time for self-reflection and understanding the "why" behind your actions. How stopping to evaluate your work can be challenging but ultimately leads to more effective and meaningful use of your time. The importance of aligning your daily tasks with your broader values and goals. How regularly taking the time to assess your work and its impact can keep you grounded and prevent burnout, especially when the world feels overwhelming. Loved this convo? Her research focuses on social determinants of health and the implementation of evidence-based psychosocial interventions for chronic pain and trauma. Dr. Chen is currently supported by a VA Career Development Award and other VA and NIH grants focused on increasing patient involvement in treatment decision-making and leveraging VA's national healthcare system data to examine disparities in access to telehealth treatments for chronic pain and co-occurring opioid use disorder. She has also founded a therapy practice specializing in serving first and second-generation Asian Americans and is a long-term KD Coach client. With nearly two decades of clinical experience as an adult nurse practitioner, Dr. Lisa Carter-Bawa (formerly Carter-Harris) is a distinguished behavioral scientist. Currently serving as the Director of the Cancer Prevention Precision Control Institute at the Center for Discovery & Innovation (CDI) at Hackensack Meridian Health in New Jersey, she also holds leadership roles at the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center consortium. Dr. Carter-Bawa's research focuses on the intricate factors influencing decision-making in lung cancer screening, with a particular emphasis on understanding the impact of stigma.  Her advocacy for incorporating the patient perspective in lung cancer screening has been supported by funding from organizations such as the National Cancer Institute and the American Lung Association. Beyond her research endeavors, she actively contributes to various professional bodies, including chairing the Stigma & Nihilism Task Group of the American Cancer Society's National Lung Cancer Roundtable and serving on the Editorial Board of Nursing Research.
