William Deresiewicz is a leading American writer best known as the author of Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of the American Elite and the Way to a Meaningful Life. And so, when Bill and I sat down in Portland for a KEEN ON America conversation, we discussed the crisis of a high-end university system that he, as a former professor at Yale, knows all too well. But Bill, a keen conversationalist, also talked about what it means to be both a Jew and an American in a country which simultaneously values personal reinvention and cultural identity. William Deresiewicz is an award-winning essayist and critic, a frequent speaker at colleges, high schools, and other venues, and the author of five books including the New York Times bestseller Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of the American Elite and the Way to a Meaningful Life, which was published in a 10th-anniversary edition in May 2024. His most recent book is The End of Solitude: Selected Essays on Culture and Society. His current project is a historically informed memoir about being Jewish. Bill has published over 300 essays and reviews. He has won the Hiett Prize in the Humanities, the National Book Critics Circle's Nona Balakian Citation for Excellence in Reviewing, and a Sydney Award; he is also a three-time National Magazine Award nominee. His work, which has appeared in The New York Times, The Atlantic, Harper's, The London Review of Books, and many other publications, has been translated into 19 languages and included in over 40 college readers and other anthologies. Bill taught English at Yale and Columbia before becoming a full-time writer. He has spoken at over 170 educational and other venues and has appeared on The Colbert Report, Here & Now, The New Yorker Radio Hour, and many other outlets. He has held visiting positions at Bard, Scripps, and Claremont McKenna Colleges as well as at the University of San Diego. In 2024, he is serving as an inaugural Public Fellow at American Jewish University. His previous books are The Death of the Artist: How Creators are Struggling to Survive in the Age of Billionaires and Big Tech, A Jane Austen Education, and Jane Austen and the Romantic Poets. Bill is a member of the Board of Directors of Tivnu: Building Justice, which runs a Jewish service-learning gap year and other programs in Portland OR, of the Advisory Board of The Matthew Strother Center for the Examined Life, a live-in study program in Catskill NY, and of the Advisory Council of Project Wayfinder, which runs purpose-learning programs in schools across the US and beyond. And, since you're wondering, it's /də-REH-zə-WITS/.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. “The system of elite education, which I can define at greater lengths is making kids miserable, and it's producing an elite class that's wrecking the country,” says best-selling author and essayist Bill Deresiewicz in this week's episode of The Syllabus. Syllabus host Mark Oppenheimer discusses topics in Deresiewicz's book Excellent Sheep, including societal pressures to attend elite colleges, overwhelming careerism, admissions competition, and increasing inequality in access to education. Guest Bio: William Deresiewicz is an essayist, critic, speaker, and author of the best-seller Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of the American Elite and the Way to a Meaningful Life. Formerly a Yale and Columbia English professor, Deresiewicz transitioned to full-time writing and has taught or lectured at schools including Bard, Scripps, Claremont McKenna, and the University of San Diego. We are back with part 2 of our conversation with Brandy Arnold from Project Wayfinder. This year more than ever we are looking for ways to bring Social and Emotional Learning into our classrooms, but Wayfinder really goes beyond just SEL to give students the opportunity to explore themselves and their future. On this episode we discussed not just the Wayfinder programs, but how we as teachers can show up for the conversations ourselves. We talked a lot about the importance of showing up in our authenticity for these conversations we have with our students and the power of vulnerability. It can be hard as a teacher to be vulnerable with our students, but there are ways to share your journey with them that are appropriate to their age and help us build relationships. As we work to make our schools feel like a safe place after the difficulties of this past year we all need to find our way back to our communities. As schools reopen for in person learning and we work to make our schools a safe place again, we are all looking for ways to support the Social and Emotional needs of our kids. This has been a year unlike any other and many of us are also relearning our place within the school. So we brought Brandy Arnold from PROJECT WAYFINDER on the podcast to talk about the work they do in helping students find belonging and purpose. During the first part of our conversation we get into the need for teachers to move beyond just the technical skills of teaching to help their students find belonging and purpose. As we try to see down the road to what our schools will look like in the coming years we hope that SEL will play a more prominent role in all our classrooms. The programs and skills taught through PROJECT WAYFINDER will give our students a chance to think about who they want to be and where they want to belong as they grow into adults. And those are skills that will serve them throughout their lives. We hope you enjoy part 1 of this conversation with Brandy Arnold and be sure to tune back in our Friday for Part 2!! The Forgotten Teachers is an illustrated true fairytale about Life on Earth. Through natural history and poetic contemplation, readers are introduced to twelve forgotten teachers that shaped our past and define our present. Among them: Sun, Moon, Ocean and Trees, each depicted in intricate and dream-like watercolor illustrations. Through these encounters, we re-learn the story of our past: our emergence from Oceanic depths, our colorful history in Trees, and the ancient celestial rhythms that still permeate our biology today. As the innovation center for Airbus, Acubed is bringing the Silicon Valley approach to advancement to the aerospace industry. Mark Cousin, CEO of Acubed, joins host Grayson Brulte for an in-depth conversation on the aviation innovations that Acubed is working on to improve efficiency and safety.   Mark shares with us the important developments that Acubed and Airbus have made over the past 10-15 years to help the organization achieve year-over-year efficiencies; how Acubed has evolved over the past five years to become a more targeted innovation center; and some of the specific innovations, including Fly by Wire, Project Wayfinder and ATOL, that demonstrate the importance of machine learning and AI to enable autonomy that will improve safety of commercial aviation, reduce costs and address the pilot shortage. He also gives a sneak peek at some of the current and future projects in the works at Acubed that will advance Airbus’ vision for innovation, including unmanned traffic management, advanced digital manufacturing, and aerial imaging.   Grayson and Mark look at why Airbus has made such a significant investment in Silicon Valley as the area’s strong concentration of talent allows the organization to be agile to changes. They look at the differences in approach and philosophy in Silicon Valley versus other aerospace hubs, like France, and how the Valley’s culture of risk taking can be applied elsewhere.   The conversation shifts to the importance of modernizing the air traffic management system to meet the demands of the new forms of mobility occupying airspace and what Acubed is doing to address this problem.   Grayson closes out the conversation by asking Mark to share his insight into the future of aviation over the next decade-plus. How will improvements in autonomy be one of the biggest contributions to the future of flight? What importance will the commercial aviation industry place on being more environmentally conscious? How quickly will demand grow for urban air mobility, especially coming out of the pandemic, to allow the services to become economically viable? What role will machine learning and AI play in making this future a reality? And how to build public trust in autonomy?   Learn more about Acubed at https://acubed.airbus.com/.   Subscribe to SAE Tomorrow Today or visit www.sae.org/podcasts to stay up to date on all the latest information from SAE. Nearly one in three adolescents (31.9%) will meet criteria for an anxiety disorder by the age of 18. While school is in session, high school students are the single most stressed out population in the US. Youth depression and anxiety are rising at alarming rates. In 2016 an estimated 3.1 million adolescents aged 12 to 17 in the United States had at least one major depressive episode.  However, based on research, this is not simply because youth have too much to do it is also because they do not know why they are doing it. Only about 1 in 5 teenagers in the US report feeling a sense of purpose. Without this deeper sense of "why" or internal compass, our youth will continue to suffer at epidemic rates. Students who have a purpose in their lives are happier, healthier, more engaged, and less stressed out than their peers without a sense of purpose. The Wayfinder Toolkit is Project Wayfinder’s contribution towards reimagining an adolescent education that supports students to build lives of purpose.    Tim Klein is the Director of Strategic Partnerships for Project Wayfinder and is an award-winning urban educator, clinical therapist and school counselor. He has spent the last decade working intensively with marginalized and underserved students to empower them to pursue meaningful and fulfilling lives. In addition to his work at Project Wayfinder, Tim is a Teaching Fellow at Harvard University and a purpose researcher and design specialist at Boston College.   In this episode, Shane Haggerty talks to Tim about Purpose Learning, how students can find their purpose, the challenges of scaling this new concept of Purpose Learning and about Project Wayfinder.
