This week Jamal is joined by special guest host Agent X as Chris is out this week, and the timing could not have been crazier. Just hours before recording, Niantic dropped a massive new Wayfinder rating system announcement that could completely reshape the future of reviewing, submissions, contributor rewards, and Wayfarer progression. Joining the roundtable are community members JQN, Keller, and Winston representing longtime Ingress veterans, newer Wayfarers, rural players, PvP grinders, and everyday contributors whose voices aren't always heard in the larger Wayfarer conversation. The crew dives deep into: the current state of Wayfarer, how the platform has evolved since OPR and Recon, misconceptions about bans and reviewing, S2 cells and map strategy, rural gameplay challenges, the loss of Recon in Ingress, and what motivates people to keep building the map years later. The conversation also gets surprisingly philosophical with debates about natural features, waterfalls, eligibility logic, reviewer behavior, and whether Wayfarer finally feels like it's moving in the right direction again after years of uncertainty. Episode 25 of Matt Likes Beer tackles one of the most polarizing modern beer styles of the past decade: the Cold IPA. The featured beer comes from Wayfinder Beer in Portland, Oregon, the brewery that not only created the recipe concept but also coined the term “Cold IPA” in 2018. For Matt—who actively seeks out the style—this makes Wayfinder the definitive benchmark. Matt opens by reflecting on the intense backlash Cold IPA received when it first appeared, noting that the hostility rivaled—and even surpassed—the early resistance to Hazy IPA. He contrasts that early reaction with the sudden, almost overnight acceptance the style enjoys today, raising questions about how and why beer communities choose what to embrace or reject. Drawing directly from Wayfinder's own published definition of the style, Matt explains what sets Cold IPA apart: heavy use of rice adjuncts, lager yeast, a very dry finish, and an emphasis on clean fermentation that allows American hops to shine with clarity and precision. He also points out that Wayfinder has effectively written their own style guideline—complete with vital statistics—despite the BJCP not yet adopting Cold IPA as a standalone category. Because no official BJCP style exists, the beer is evaluated as a 34B Mixed-Style Beer, declared as American IPA + American Lager, which Matt agrees is the best available option—even if it doesn't fully capture what Cold IPA truly is. Using this framework, he conducts a full judging breakdown, noting a medium-yellow appearance with persistent foam, expressive citrus-forward aroma, light herbal and dank hop character, subtle grain notes, and a distinct but restrained lager yeast presence. Flavor-wise, the beer delivers orange zest, grapefruit rind, floral and herbal hop notes, light toasted grain, and a crisp, slightly dry finish. However, Matt finds the bitterness lower than expected for the style—particularly from the brewery that defined it. Mouthfeel is light-bodied and highly carbonated with surprising softness beneath the fizz, contributing to excellent drinkability. The final score lands at 35 out of 50, placing it squarely in the “Very Good” range. With no online reviews to read—of any rating—the episode pivots into an extended and impassioned soapbox segment. Matt unpacks the early hatred directed at Cold IPA, arguing that much of the criticism was aimed at the name and concept, not the beer itself. He connects that reaction to a broader problem within craft beer and homebrewing: resistance to innovation, gatekeeping, and a reflexive hostility toward anything new or unfamiliar.
Beer collaborations are a particularly effective way for brewers to share and learn, but what if you could take that experience and share it with a wider audience? That's the idea behind this episode, recorded shortly after the brew day wrapped on a forthcoming collab brewed by Kelly McKnight at the pilot brewery of New Belgium in Fort Collins, Colorado, along with Ashleigh Carter of Denver's Bierstadt Lagerhaus and Natalie Rose Baldwin of Wayfinder in Portland, Oregon. Throughout, these three accomplished brewers discuss: finding common ground in a recipe and ingredients diving into each others' brew sheets exploring modern techniques such as cool pooling (even with German hops) understanding what qualities of subtler European hop varieties come through from the rub into the finished beer And more. The Bus as Wayfinder: Body, Community, and the Ritual of Public TransportIn this episode, I stay on the bus long enough to understand that the journey is not a prelude, it's the ritual. For two years, I've taken public transport across West Cork to swim and train, partly to protect my health, partly to negotiate the quiet truths of aging. But somewhere between timetables and weather, something else happened: the bus became a moving room of community. Drivers who greet you like you matter. Passengers who carry entire biographies in shopping bags. Conversations that feel like “social media” without algorithms, attention offered instead of harvested.Together with my AI Co-Host Sophia, I reflect on how public transport can become a wayfinder, a teacher of patience, humility, and interdependence. And I tell the story of a ninety-two-year-old farmer I met at the Bandon bus stop, a life stitched together through routes, routines, and resilience, until absence became the final message. The episode closes with a song by Los Inorgánicos: “Timetable Hymn.”Detlef Schlich is a rock musician, podcaster, visual artist, filmmaker, ritual designer, and media archaeologist based in West Cork. He is recognised for his seminal work, including a scholarly examination of the intersections between shamanism, art, and digital culture, and his acclaimed video installation, Transodin's Tragedy. He primarily works in performance, photography, painting, sound, installations, and film. In his work, he reflects on the human condition and uses the digital shaman's methodology as an alter ego to create artwork. Documentary about role-playing Putnam camp to screen at Howland Alex Simmons was deep in the jungles of the Amazon, shooting a documentary for National Geographic about black market gold mines, when his co-director, Carina Mia Wong, turned to him and asked, "What do you know about LARPing?" Simmons didn't know anything about LARPing, or Live Action Role Playing. But when Wong told him about a LARPing summer camp in the Hudson Valley called Wayfinder, in which adolescents and teens spend a week running around in the Putnam County woods, improvising elaborate fantasy tales and whacking each other with foam swords, he agreed they'd found the subject for their next film. "When you're a kid, everything gets delineated," Simmons said. "You're told that you can either be into sports or be a nerd. But when I was a kid, I liked sports and Dungeons & Dragons." After an epic campaign through the festival circuit resulting in a dragon's hoard worth of awards, including a special jury award at the 2024 SXSW Festival in honor of the film's "bravery and empathy," We Can Be Heroes comes to the Howland Cultural Center at 7 p.m. on Thursday (Feb. 26). After the screening, presented by the Beacon Film Society, Judson Packard, the Wayfinder camp director, will answer questions. "What matters is that the campers get to tell their own stories," Packard says in the film. "And for each one of them, they are the main character of that story." Packard found Wayfinder as a wayward and moody teenager 20 years ago. It is a place where neurodivergent, LGTBQ+ and/or teens who don't feel like they fit in can be themselves. As a camper in the film exclaims: "It's all just a bunch of nerds, straight up vibing." Wayfinder was happy to participate with the filmmakers. But logistics were more challenging. "You have 40 kids running through 500 acres of land," said Wong. "How do we film that?" The filmmakers spent a summer figuring out how to film at night in the woods, where to place cameras and when to do tick checks (constantly). They also looked for campers they could follow. "It was a gut feeling," said Wong. "Who has the potential for a transformation? Whose journey are we invested in? Where can things go in a week?" The documentary focuses on kids like Cloud, an 11-year-old, first-time camper from White Plains who puts in two hours of daily lightsaber practice. There's Dexter, a 15-year-old homeschooler from Manhattan who's written two-thirds of a fantasy trilogy but just wants to get his crush's phone number by the end of the week. And there's Abby, a 17-year-old, budding animator who is battling gastroparesis and spinal muscular atrophy and has been given a troubling long-term diagnosis. Nevertheless, arriving at camp, Abby tells the filmmakers, "I'm pumped as hell. … Am I allowed to curse?" The scene gets more deliriously chaotic when the campers begin the "adventure game," an improvised, multi-day storyline. Entitled "The Last Green," the scenario posits that the campers form six tribes of faeries facing a mysterious black void that is closing in around them. The story becomes a film within a film as the tribes figure out whether they can work together to save their world. What happens next is something completely unexpected. Before the game kicks off, some campers say they see the story as a metaphor for climate change. But there's another darkness that the kids have been fighting off: The film was shot in the summer of 2022, as the pandemic began to wane. For many campers, even though they're wearing full-body cardboard armor and giving themselves names like Shard Dorpington and Infernuis Nocturna, this is the most normal thing they've done in years. "During the filming, it hit us how impactful COVID has been on this generation," said Simmons. "They were telling us, 'I didn't get to have my senior prom,' or 'It was supposed to be the most important year of my life, and I missed it.' I still get emotional thinking about it." The Howland Cultural ...

Adam Johnson won the Pulitzer Prize in 2013 for his novel, The Orphan Master's Son. He won the National Book Award in 2015 for his story collection, Fortune Smiles. He also authored Parasites Like Us and Emporium. Every novel and story is unlike anything that's come before it. His latest, The Wayfinder, is no exception. Set over 1,000 years ago in the South Pacific, it weaves together the stories of two families and two islands and their opposing views of the world. Adam joins Marrie Stone to talk about how he's not only expanded the idea of what a novel can do, but reimagined it entirely. He talks about how oral traditions of storytelling informed the creation of this book and the massive amounts of research necessary to write it. He talks about what forces shaped the writer he's become, and the many insights about story he shares with his students (Adam teaches in the Wallace Stegner Fellowship program at Stanford). This conversation contains a wealth of insights into craft, process, and storytelling. It also includes a passage from the book which Adam reads and dissects for the listener. #180 - Have you ever wondered what happens when a deep love for Ireland, masterful storytelling, and biblical foundations merge? That's exactly what unfolds in this captivating conversation with John Leonard, the creative mind behind the Wayfinder series – a fantasy adventure saga that bridges ancient myths with biblical narratives.Growing up in rural Colorado as the eldest of four siblings, John shares how his close relationship with his brother shaped his early years through sports and friendly competition. His journey took a fascinating turn in college when he discovered rugby, serving as team captain for four years at Colorado Mesa University. This passion later connected him deeply to Irish culture when he seized an opportunity to study abroad in Belfast.John's eight-mile walk from Dublin to the Neolithic site of Newgrange became a transformative experience, allowing him to absorb Ireland's countryside in a way impossible from behind a car window. "Walking that road was just something else," he recalls, describing how the sideways rain, winding paths, and ancient hamlets with thatched roofs transported him through time. His vivid descriptions of Irish pub culture – where storytellers gather, musicians spontaneously form bands, and strangers share life stories over shared drinks – reveal how deeply Ireland's storytelling tradition influenced his own writing. The heart of our conversation explores John's Wayfinder series, particularly his first book "Dawn of Destiny." This unique fantasy saga fills the narrative gap between the Tower of Babel and Abraham's story in Genesis, weaving together Mesopotamian, Akkadian, Egyptian, and other Bronze Age cultural myths into a cohesive narrative that respects biblical accounts. Using the rabbinical teaching method of Pardes, John creates stories with multiple levels of meaning – from surface-level adventure to deeper theological symbolism.Whether you're fascinated by ancient mythology, interested in creative approaches to biblical narratives, or simply love a good conversation about the writing journey, John's story will inspire you to see adventure as more than just reaching a destination. As he beautifully puts it: "The adventure is the journey in between...the relationships, the foundational aspects that form who you are along that journey." Watch on Philo! - Philo.tv/DTHTHE DEAD SPEAK! The opening crawl reveals that a mysterious broadcast has been heard across the galaxy in the voice of the late Emperor Palpatine. BUT HOW?! Leia dispatches agents across the galaxy to gather information on this, while Kylo Ren, now Supreme Leader of the First Order, searches for Palpatine in an effort to eliminate all potential threats to his power.Kylo Ren finds this triangle thing which leads him to a hidden planet where he finds Palpatine, still kicken. Palpatine unveils a fleet of Star Destroyers and offers it to Kylo if he finds and kills Rey, who is continuing her Jedi training under Leia. During Rey's training, She has a chat with Kylo Ren through their Force bond—brief flashes of the past—and accidentally crushes BB-8 during training. I was so mad at her for hurting sweet BB-8.Poe announces to the Resistance that Palpatine is alive and plans to unleash his fleet. To stop him, they need the Sith Finder which Rey believes to be on a planet called Pasanna.The. crew lands during a sick dance party. Rey meets a local who gives her a necklace—through their Force bond, Kylo take it from her and determines her location. Rey is soon approached by Leia's contact—Lando Calrissian. He explains that he and Luke once searched for a Sith hunter named Ochi, who may have held the key to finding the Wayfinder. They found his ship, but no trace of him.Stormtroopers arrive, and the heroes flee into the desert, falling into quicksand that leads to an underground cave. There, they find a Sith dagger inscribed with a clue. Unfortunately, C-3PO's programming prevents him from translating Sith text.Rey senses Kylo approaching and confronts him while the others prepare for takeoff. She brings down Kylo's ship but is shocked to see Chewie captured. As she and Kylo both use the Force to stop a transport from leaving, Rey loses control and unleashes Force lightning—destroying the ship and, seemingly, killing Chewie.Don't worry - Chewie is fine. He was on a different ship and they're going to hold him captive.Poe takes the gang to see an old friend, Zorii Bliss. She takes them to a tiny little fella who can bypass 3PO's programming so that 3P0 will finally translate the Sith text, but will also erase his memory. Suddenly, the First Order arrives, having tracked the group. Rey senses that Chewie is alive on their Star Destroyer—they realize he must have been on a different transport. The crew sneaks onto the ship. While Finn and Poe are captured, Rey goes to retrieves the dagger, has a force battle with Kylo, and has a vision of the emporer killing her parents, who were hiding her to protect her. Kylo tells her it's because she's a Palpatine. The captives are about to be executed—but General Hux intervenes, revealing himself as the spy. He helps them escape, explaining he doesn't care who wins, as long as Kylo loses. Rey refuses to join Kylo Ren in destroying Palpatine and the crew escapes with Chewie and the Falcon. Hux is immediately killed for being a spy. The team heads to where the Death Star wreckage lies. They meet Jannah, a former stormtrooper who, like Finn, escaped the First Order. Rey finds the Wayfinder—but experiences a dark vision of herself as a Sith Vampire combo package. Kylo shows up and they begin to fight. Suddenly, Kylo gets a vision of his mom, Leia, taking her last breath. He drops his lightsaber which Rey catches and uses to stab him. But then when she feels like Leia is dead, she heals Kylo so he can mourn without pain:? idk man. Kylo has a vision of his father who encourages him to return to the light. Kylo throws his lightsaber into the water. Poe is named General and doubts his ability to lead. Lando comes outta nowhere to give him a pep talk. Intending to exile herself like Luke, Rey tries to destroy her lightsaber, but Luke's Force ghost appears. He tells her that Leia knew all along who she was and still believed in her. He gives her Leia's saber and helps her retrieve the Wayfinder from Kylo's ship. Rey pilots Luke's old ship. With a signal from Luke's ship coming through, the Resistance prepares for battle. Poe and Finn lead the attack, on horse back cuz duh. Rey shows up to confronts Palpatine. Dude is pumped to see his granddaughter. He says he doesn't want to kill her, rather he wants her to kill him so his spirit will enter her and they can lead together. Kylo shows up and they fight together, sharing Leia's saber through the Force. Papetine enjoys the show and then uses his lightning fingers on both of them which is like draining their power. The Resistance attacks Palpatine's fleet, but they're outmatched. Just as hope fades, Lando arrives with a massive fleet from across the galaxy. As Rey lies on the ground, she hears the voices of past Jedi who encourage her to get up! She confronts Palpatine again, deflecting his lightning with both Luke and Leia's sabers. As he declares “I am all the Sith,” Rey responds, “And I... am all the Jedi,” and destroys him. She's on the verge of death from the blast, but Kylo climbs out of the pit he was throw in and revives her with his own life force. They kiss BIG ONESSSS! But then he dies. Womp Womp. The Resistance destroys the Sith fleet. And the heroes reunite and celebrate the win. The movie ends with Rey and BB8 take the Falcon to Tatooine. She buries the Skywalker lightsabers there and shows that i guess she has her own yellow one now. When a local asks who she is, she says Rey. Follow up Q for you - Rey who? She ponders the answer until she sees the ghost of Luke and Leia smiling at her and she says Rey Skywalker as she and BB9 watch the twin suns.
