Camping & Wildfire Risk: How Climate Change Is Changing Our Campsites.

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 27, 2025 13:01 Transcription Available

Send us a textWildfire smoke, sudden downpours, and surprise park closures are rewriting the camping playbook—and we're mapping a better way forward. From downbursts that flatten tree canopies to late-season black flies and fire bans that change by municipality, we share how our own trips have shifted and what actually works when conditions get weird. This is a practical, no-drama guide to staying safe, staying flexible, and still finding joy around the campfire when the rules of the outdoors keep changing. We dig into the realities campers now face: how to check fire bans across jurisdictions, read air quality indexes before you roll, and build a safer camp when torrential rain hits. We talk fire hygiene that prevents smouldering root fires, smarter site selection that avoids flood paths, and the gear that holds up—tight rainflies, solid guylines, repair tape, and a pre-filled water bucket. You'll also hear tips for navigating drought and water scarcity with reliable filtration, plus how to spot and treat heat exhaustion fast. On the wildlife front, we cover rising tick and mosquito activity, daily tick checks, and why a small removal kit can save a trip.Planning is where resilience starts. We walk through creating Plan A, B, and C routes to dodge local smoke and storms, using Parks Canada and Ontario Parks updates, cross-checking municipal advisories, and leaning on weather and AQI tools for real-time decisions. We round it out with low-impact choices—carpooling when possible, rechargeable or solar lighting, battery recycling, and Leave No Trace habits—that reduce harm without killing the fun. Camping is still magic. With a flexible mindset and a few new skills, it's not only possible—it's better, because you're ready. If this helped, follow the show, share it with a camping friend, and leave a quick review so more outdoor lovers can find it. Day Two On Temagami: Breakfast Wraps, Easy Portages, And Playful Rapids

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 26, 2025 4:31 Transcription Available

Send us a textWarm October sun, a gentle river, and the sweet spot between skills and ease—day two on Temagami delivered a slow-burn kind of joy. We kept the mileage short, dialled in our teamwork over breakfast, and spent the afternoon playing in friendly rapids with boats light and smiles wide. If you've wondered how to design a canoe-camping day that builds confidence without chasing distance, this is the blueprint. We break down the day from a compact portage around a falls to the practical art of ferrying and S turns—how to set an angle, read a tongue of current, and keep hips loose so the boat does the work. With the water as coach, we lap the same feature to sharpen timing and control, proving you don't need big whitewater to grow river sense. Along the shore, camp takes shape early: tents pitched, late lunch enjoyed, and a quick, bracing swim to rinse off the trail dust. The heat feels surreal for October, which brings its own lessons in layering and hydration for shoulder-season paddling.Fishing fans get their moment too. Jared hooks a solid bass and lets it go, a small but clear nod to stewardship and Leave No Trace. We talk safety without killing the vibe: why intentional swims are the only ones we'll accept, how throw bags and buddy systems add margin, and when to say yes to one more lap versus calling it a day. With a relaxed plan for tomorrow—likely a couple of small rapids, a short paddle, and a meet-up with Greg in the afternoon—we lean into the idea that a great trip balances play and planning. If you love canoe camping, Temagami routes, beginner whitewater, or simply hearing the river in the background while you plan your next adventure, you'll feel right at home here. Follow along for practical tips, warm camp stories, and the small wins that turn a simple day into a standout memory. Try A Simple Overnight To Fall In Love With Camping

Send us a textReady to fall in love with camping without the stress of a full-blown trip? We break down our favourite microadventure formula: a single midweek overnight at Ontario Parks within an easy drive of Toronto. Think quick packing, simple meals, and all the magic of a campfire, minus the overwhelm. Whether you're testing the waters or introducing kids to the outdoors, this is a repeatable plan that builds confidence and joy.We walk through how to choose parks within one to two hours of the city and why midweek bookings can turn crowded hotspots into calm escapes. You'll hear our top picks—Presqu'ile, Bronte Creek, Ferris, Emily, and even Sibbald Point when timed right—plus the specific perks that make each place shine. From Bronte Creek's farmhouse demos, indoor barn playground, and massive pool to Presqu'ile's trails and shoreline, there's more than enough to keep curious minds engaged and screens out of sight.Meals stay easy and delicious with our go-to foil-pack method: frozen fish and veg thaw en route and hit the fire on a clean foil layer over the park grate. Pancakes in the morning, hot dogs and s'mores at night, and a compact kitchen bin to keep everything organized. We also share practical checkout rhythms, small Leave No Trace habits that matter, and how short trips help you learn what you actually need. Start small, build momentum, and let these one-night adventures stack into memories your family will talk about for years. If this sparked a plan, subscribe for more trail-tested ideas, share this episode with a friend who needs a nudge outdoors, and leave a quick review to help others find the show.Support the showCONNECT WITH US AT SUPER GOOD CAMPING:Support the podcast & buy super cool SWAG: https://store.skgroupinc.com/super_good_camping/shop/homeEMAIL: hi@supergoodcamping.comWEBSITE: www.supergoodcamping.comYOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqFDJbFJyJ5Y-NHhFseENsQINSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/super_good_camping/TWITTER: https://twitter.com/SuperGoodCampinFACEBOOK GROUP: https://www.facebook.com/groups/SuperGoodCamping/TIKTOK: https://www.tiktok.com/@supergoodcamping Support the show

Send us a textA broken train plan shouldn't break a trip. When the Spanish River route vanished overnight after a baggage car mishap, we leaned on fast-moving outfitters, scanned our maps, and chose a new path that turned out to be exactly what we needed: Temagami by way of Red Cedar. What started as a scramble became a reminder that the best stories often arrive when the itinerary falls apart. We walk through the decision tree—French River, Martin River, then Temagami—and why Temagami won on terrain, access, and spirit. From our Red Cedar put-in to a sandy beach campsite under tall pines, we share the small wins that steady a group: clean landings, quiet water, and a camp kitchen that goes beyond “good enough.” Expect pizza hot off the pan and a shout-out to Bill from Thunderbox Diaries for unrolled cabbage rolls and smashed pierogies that boosted energy and morale. The day ahead brings two dam portages and our first real taste of whitewater after months of training. We talk scouting, conservative calls, and what “intentional swims” means to us. Safety, communication, and humility take centre stage as we plan runs, respect horizon lines, and keep the group moving smoothly. Along the way, we dig into adaptable trip planning for Northern Ontario—how to evaluate alternate routes quickly, work with local knowledge, and choose campsites that actually fit your needs. If you're curious about Temagami routes, Red Cedar access, beginner whitewater strategy, or trail-tested camp meals, you'll find practical takeaways and a few laughs. How a Failed Hike Sparked a Lightweight Gear Revolution

Send us a textA dream trail broke his knees and changed his life—Steve Evans went from hauling “light” heavy gear to engineering tools that feel like cheating on a portage. We bring you the origin story of Suluk 46, where a licensed mechanical engineer applies stress analysis and real-world testing to build ultralight, ultra-strong equipment that actually earns its place in your pack. From a titanium-and-carbon ice axe born for Nepal, to award-winning tent stakes, to a folding saw that weighs like a candy bar, Steve shows how obsession, iteration, and field time create gear that lasts. We explore the design logic behind two very different saw families—an ultralight buck saw and slim folding pull saws built around Silky blades—plus the realities of supply, custom blade development in Sweden, and choosing performance without extra grams. You'll hear the surprisingly relatable story of a packable grill that snaps together at camp and disappears into a small tube when you hike out, solving the “gross site grate” problem without adding bulk. We also dig into the market divide between canoe trippers and ultralight hikers, why product choices shift with terrain and portages, and how to think about comfort versus weight when you're planning multi-day routes.Looking ahead, Steve teases a carbon fibre, refillable fuel canister with a titanium valve assembly—a TSSA-informed answer to disposable isobutane canisters that could save weight, reduce waste, and make fuel management smarter on long trips. Along the way, we talk about building a small, family-powered company, launching products at Canadian outdoor shows, and redefining success around time outside, not just scale. If you care about backpacking gear, canoe tripping essentials, and thoughtful design that starts on the trail and ends at your workbench, this conversation will spark ideas for your next kit rebuild.Enjoyed the episode? From zebra mussels and round goby to emerald ash borer, Asian longhorned beetle, garlic mustard, buckthorn, purple loosestrife, and dog‑strangling vine, we explain how each species changes habitat, why it matters for fish nurseries and forest health, and what early warning signs to look for on the water and along the trail. You'll hear practical field tips you can use right away: clean, drain, and dry boats and gear; never move live bait between waterbodies; don't transport firewood; and learn to spot D‑shaped exit holes in ash or dense reed stands of invasive phragmites. We also talk reporting tools like EDDMapS Ontario, working with certified arborists, and joining local stewardship days to pull invasive plants and restore native groundcover. Along the way, we share personal stories of tree loss, park closures, and shoreline changes that show how fast an infestation can turn a favourite campsite or launch into a very different place. If you love paddling clear bays, fishing healthy lakes, and hiking under diverse canopies, this is your action plan. What makes their partnership particularly fascinating is how they complement each other—CW with his lifelong love of camping and canoeing that began in his childhood backyard, and Maya with her transformative journey from having a fear of heights to becoming an accomplished rock climber who now "feels alive" when scaling extreme heights. The conversation dives deep into cultural differences in outdoor participation, particularly highlighting the challenges women face in adventure sports. Maya speaks candidly about Brazil's gender dynamics: "Here women need to fight three times harder to achieve whatever we want." Yet despite these barriers, she's built Brazilian Outdoor Adventure (BOA), a company dedicated to showing international visitors the natural wonders of her homeland. What sets The Outdoors People Show apart is their focus on humans rather than just activities. As CW explains, "We get to know Maya Marzocchi through her climbing. We didn't get to know her climbing through Maya Marzocchi." This human-centered approach has allowed them to discover extraordinary stories of transformation, where outdoor adventures become vehicles for personal growth and cross-cultural understanding.Their shared philosophy—that outdoor adventures should be free from ego and open to everyone—resonates throughout the conversation. Whether discussing CW's drum-making past (including crafting for Neil Peart) or Maya's approach to confronting fears head-on, their stories remind us that the outdoors offers endless possibilities for discovery, both of the world around us and of ourselves.Ready to experience the transformative power of outdoor adventure? When they joined us, we discovered how their weekly phone conversations about camping gear and adventures naturally evolved into a podcast—now in its third successful season. What makes their approach unique in the outdoor content space is their commitment to keeping camping accessible and fun. Unlike many gear-focused channels, Tim and Ade prioritize light-hearted discussions that celebrate the joy of outdoor experiences. Their no-sponsorship policy allows them complete freedom to share honest opinions about equipment and destinations. As they jokingly shared, if you skip forward 10 seconds repeatedly through any episode, you'll essentially create a laugh track—a testament to the genuine brotherly banter that forms the heart of their show. Our conversation revealed fascinating contrasts between UK and Canadian camping cultures. While Canadians enjoy Crown Land camping with remarkable freedom to explore wilderness areas, UK campers face significant restrictions with limited wild camping opportunities and private ownership of many waterways. This led to enlightening discussions about how we adapt our camping styles to our environments—from Tim's beloved three-meter bell tent (his "one-man tent" complete with wood-burning stove) to Ade's enthusiasm for winter camping with modern amenities. Both podcast teams shared personal insights about what makes camping special: the community that forms around campfires, the balance between adventure and comfort, and knowing your personal limits when planning trips. Whether you're new to camping or an experienced outdoor enthusiast, there's something refreshingly genuine about their approach that reminds us all why we seek these connections with nature and each other.Ready to get inspired by authentic outdoor conversations? Protecting Bears Through Better Food Storage in the Backcountry

Send us a textThe line between thriving wilderness and dangerous bear encounters often comes down to one simple thing: how we store our food in the backcountry. Grant Breidenbach from Bear Vault joins us to reveal fascinating insights about bear behavior and the science behind effective food protection strategies.Bears possess what scientists call "spatio-temporal memory" – they remember both where and when they found food sources. This remarkable adaptation serves them perfectly in natural settings but creates serious problems when they discover human food. With noses containing four times the scent receptors of a bloodhound and surprising intelligence, bears quickly learn that our calorie-dense snacks offer more reward for less effort than foraging naturally. As Grant explains, "Human food, not even once" should be our mantra when it comes to bears. We explore how traditional food-hanging methods have become increasingly ineffective as bears learn to defeat them – chewing through ropes, breaking branches, or even shimmying across lines to access suspended food bags. The Bear Vault's ingenious design, with its slippery sides and carefully engineered dimensions, creates a physical barrier bears simply cannot defeat. After trying and receiving no food reward, bears quickly return to their natural diet. Most powerfully, Grant shifts our perspective from self-protection to ecosystem preservation: "There's no such thing as a problem bear – there are problem people." When we fail to properly store food, we set bears up for dangerous behavior that often leads to their euthanization. One Colorado case study showed a 98% reduction in human-bear conflicts within five years after implementing canister requirements and education.Whether you're planning your first wilderness adventure or are a seasoned backcountry traveler, this conversation will transform how you think about food storage and bear protection. Join us in understanding that when we enter the wilderness, we're guests in the bear's home – and protecting them is our responsibility.Subscribe now for more insightful conversations about adventure, conservation, and responsible outdoor recreation!www.bearvault.comhttps://www.facebook.com/bearvaultcanistershttps://www.instagram.com/bearvault/Support the showCONNECT WITH US AT SUPER GOOD CAMPING:Support the podcast & buy super cool SWAG: https://store.skgroupinc.com/super_good_camping/shop/homeEMAIL: hi@supergoodcamping.comWEBSITE: www.supergoodcamping.comYOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqFDJbFJyJ5Y-NHhFseENsQINSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/super_good_camping/TWITTER: https://twitter.com/SuperGoodCampinFACEBOOK GROUP: https://www.facebook.com/groups/SuperGoodCamping/TIKTOK: https://www.tiktok.com/@supergoodcamping Support the show

However, we also discuss important safety considerations after witnessing a frightening slip that fortunately ended without serious injury. For those willing to venture further into Ontario's wilderness, we explore options ranging from the moderate three-kilometer hike to High Falls in Algonquin (perfect for swimming and sunbathing) to the much more challenging multi-day trek required to reach the remote Hendrie River Waterfalls in Lake Superior Provincial Park. We've included practical advice about the best seasons to visit (spring for water volume, fall for colors), accessibility considerations, what to pack, and the importance of proper footwear on potentially slippery trails. Whether you're planning a dedicated waterfall adventure or simply looking to enhance an existing camping trip, these seven spectacular destinations offer something for every outdoor enthusiast.Connect with us on social media or email us at hi@supergoodcamping.com with questions or to share your own waterfall experiences. We're taking a brief summer hiatus after our next three episodes to focus on our own camping adventures, but we'll be back in the fall with more outdoor inspiration!Support the showCONNECT WITH US AT SUPER GOOD CAMPING:Support the podcast & buy super cool SWAG: https://store.skgroupinc.com/super_good_camping/shop/homeEMAIL: hi@supergoodcamping.comWEBSITE: www.supergoodcamping.comYOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqFDJbFJyJ5Y-NHhFseENsQINSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/super_good_camping/TWITTER: https://twitter.com/SuperGoodCampinFACEBOOK GROUP: https://www.facebook.com/groups/SuperGoodCamping/TIKTOK: https://www.tiktok.com/@supergoodcamping Support the show

Bushcraft and Back: The Life of Joe Robinet

Send us a textFrom concrete jungle to wilderness champion, Joe Robinet's story captivates with its raw honesty and powerful transformation. Our guest shares how a childhood fascination with nature shows like "Grizzly Adams" planted seeds that would eventually grow into a fulfilling career as a bushcraft expert and content creator.Joe's path wasn't straightforward – learning bushcraft skills in a small patch of land between two factories in Windsor before eventually finding his way to northern wilderness. His YouTube journey began organically, uploading videos to prove his skills to an online forum community, never imagining it would become his livelihood. With refreshing candor, Joe dispels the myth that his appearance on History Channel's "Alone" launched his career – in fact, it temporarily derailed it when viewers reacted negatively to him losing his fire. The conversation takes a profound turn as Joe recounts his life-altering dirt bike accident that resulted in a three-week coma and devastating nerve damage to his hand. Doctors prepared his family for the worst, yet Joe defied expectations in his recovery. The emotional weight of this experience permeates his reflections on mortality, family responsibility, and small joys like regaining the ability to peel a banana. "I never thought about how awesome it is that you can use your hands," he shares. "This is what separates us from the animals."Now embracing life's second chance, Joe discusses his passion for canoe tripping, camping with his wilderness-loving dog, and his mission to teach his daughters self-reliance through annual wilderness trips. Looking ahead, he's planning ambitious adventures including a documentary about his comeback journey and potentially a 50-day solo canoe expedition. Through triumph and trauma, Joe's story reminds us that passion, perseverance, and perspective can transform even the darkest moments into opportunities for growth.Want to experience the wilderness through Joe's eyes? Following his mother's passing and a difficult divorce, Rob discovered that kayaking, fishing, and wilderness exploration quite literally saved his life – transforming his darkest moments into a passionate outdoor lifestyle that now defines him.The conversation takes us through Rob's evolution as an outdoorsman, from his early days spending dawn to dusk on the water fishing for bass and pike, to his more recent obsession with fly fishing. "Until you get into it and get into a river and hook a big one and fight – it's hard to explain where the passion comes from," Rob explains, his enthusiasm palpable as he describes the thrill of battling brook trout on a fly rod.We explore Rob's deeply thoughtful approach to hunting, which stems from a desire for self-sufficiency and ethically-sourced food. Unlike trophy hunting, Rob ensures every part of his harvested animals serves a purpose – from feeding his family and his dog Kiva to using hides for crafting and fly-tying materials. He candidly shares his three-year journey of learning deer behavior before successfully harvesting his first one, showing the depth of respect and knowledge that guides his practice.Perhaps most compelling is Rob's raw honesty about the psychological impact of wilderness immersion. He describes the almost depressive state he experiences when returning from extended backcountry trips – a testament to nature's profound effect on his wellbeing. "I love coming back to my family, to the dog, everything else. I hate coming back to everything that's outside of this house," he admits, capturing the sentiment many wilderness enthusiasts feel but rarely articulate.Whether you're an experienced outdoorsperson or someone curious about the healing potential of nature, Rob's story offers both practical knowledge and emotional insight into how the wilderness can transform lives. Jesse Villemaire takes us deep into the heart of this question, revealing how respecting wildlife comes before capturing the perfect shot. As co-founder of Follow Me North with his wife Susan, Jesse shares captivating stories from Algonquin Park's wilderness and South African safaris while unveiling the philosophy that guides their intimate photography workshops."The wildlife comes first, the photo comes next," Jesse emphasizes, explaining how maintaining proper distance and understanding animal behavior creates not just better photographs, but more meaningful encounters. Through heartfelt examples—including a devastating story about a habituated wolf—he illustrates why "baiting" wildlife causes harm that far outweighs any photographic benefit.Jesse's personal journey from tattoo studio owner in Cambridge to wildlife photographer in Muskoka reveals how nature became his essential reset button. The story of meeting his wife through Instagram's Algonquin Park hashtag (culminating in their wedding on an island in Lake of Two Rivers) demonstrates how shared passion for wilderness can forge life's most meaningful connections. Their volunteer work with Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary further showcases their commitment to conservation beyond the lens. From their viral "Santa in a Red Canoe" series to their humorous "Sorry Algonquin" Instagram project pairing stunning images with one-star park reviews, Jesse's creative approach invites others into nature's beauty with both reverence and playfulness. His South African photo tours—where participants might find themselves surrounded by 21 lions—offer transformative experiences that "change you" on a fundamental level.Ready to experience wildlife photography through a more mindful lens? Send us a textJeff McMurtrie returns to our podcast with exciting news about his meticulously crafted wilderness maps that have transformed how paddlers experience Ontario's backcountry. Having spent over 700 days exploring these waterways, Jeff brings unparalleled expertise to his cartography – revealing hidden gems that most travelers miss and preventing potentially frustrating navigational errors. The newest additions to his collection include updated Killarney and French River maps with 50% more detail, innovative portage elevation profiles, and an extensive catalog of points of interest. Perhaps most exciting is the announcement of a refreshed Temagami map coming this summer and a new East French River map that completes the coverage from Georgian Bay to Lake Nipissing when combined with his other maps. What makes these maps special goes beyond their accuracy. Jeff's thoughtful design elements – like showing creek width proportional to reality and using distinctive "penciled in" styling for extremely challenging routes – reflect his deep understanding of what paddlers actually need on the water. The maps document everything from waterfalls and swimming holes to historic sites and spring water sources, creating what Jeff calls "that extra dimension" that transforms a good trip into an unforgettable one. Each physical map purchase includes digital versions in five different formats (high-resolution JPEG, Avenza Maps with GPS functionality, Garmin GPS, Google Earth 3D, and GeoTIFF), ensuring paddlers can use them however best suits their style. Jeff shares that user feedback has been invaluable in refining these resources – from identifying changed conditions to suggesting new features that improve usability.Whether you're planning your first backcountry trip or your fiftieth, these maps provide both essential navigation tools and unexpected discoveries. After multiple rejections from major publishers who couldn't see the market for a book about nature helping anxiety in youth, Kevin took matters into his own hands with passionate determination. The book follows Paul, an anxious pre-teen reluctant to embark on a canoe trip with his Uncle Roy. Through beautifully illustrated pages created by Cliff McArdle, we witness Paul's transformation from a nervous, screen-dependent kid to someone who embraces wilderness experiences. What makes the story unique is how woodland creatures secretly guide and teach both Paul and his uncle throughout their adventure.Kevin's decision to self-publish reveals the changing landscape of publishing and the obstacles authors face when trying to share meaningful messages. From navigating print-on-demand services to dealing with third-party sellers attempting to list his unreleased book at inflated prices, the journey demonstrates how passion can overcome traditional gatekeepers. Though self-publishing means taking on all marketing and distribution responsibilities, it provides significantly higher royalties and creative control.Throughout our conversation, Kevin shares insights from his decades teaching youth in outdoor settings: "We just have to take them in the woods for a long period of time and they become who they are. It's magical." This firsthand experience of nature's transformative power drives his mission to reach young readers struggling with anxiety in our increasingly digital world.Whether you're a parent concerned about your child's mental health, an outdoor enthusiast, or someone curious about publishing alternatives, this episode offers wisdom, humor, and inspiration. Rather than surrendering to limitations, this diagnosis sparked an unexpected journey into the wilderness that transformed his life."I just started walking down the ski trails," Curtis recalls, "and then I fell in love with hiking... seeing birds for the first time I didn't know existed and these plants." What began as rehabilitation became a profound connection with nature that would shape his future career in forestry and conservation, where he made conscious decisions to protect wildlife habitats and riparian zones while managing logging operations. Now 46, Curtis embraces outdoor adventures with a wisdom born from decades managing chronic pain. His upcoming 15-day solo canoe expedition through Ontario's Temagami region represents both a physical challenge and a deeply meaningful journey. Beginning on Gamble Lake, where he planted trees 25 years ago, and ending at Emerald Lake, where his partner's family has scattered ashes of loved ones, the 160-kilometer route creates a perfect circle in his life story.Curtis shares his meticulous planning process – from creating detailed spreadsheets tracking gear weight to dehydrating trail meals and calculating necessary daily calories. His "nothing but time" philosophy prioritizes enjoyment and safety over covering distance. "If I have to triple carry, I don't care," he explains. "I'm going to pull out my camera and watch birds and take three carries and spend two hours on the trail."Beyond his personal adventures, Curtis finds joy in introducing his teenage daughters to the backcountry, carefully balancing challenge with comfort. Journey into the Wild: Saskatchewan's Untamed Backcountry

Send us a textTyler Chilabecki's love affair with the Saskatchewan wilderness began with a fishing rod in his hand at just three years old. Now, as the creator behind the YouTube channel Puddle Jumper, he's on a mission to shatter stereotypes about his home province one paddle stroke at a time."Everyone thinks of Saskatchewan as flat prairies and wheat," Tyler explains with the weariness of someone who's heard it once too often. "But half our province is boreal forest and Canadian Shield." This northern wilderness forms the backdrop for his solo paddling adventures, which range from weekend trips to epic three-week journeys through some of Canada's most untouched waterways. What makes Saskatchewan's backcountry uniquely appealing is the profound solitude it offers. While popular parks like Algonquin might have portage trails "like superhighways" with paddlers carrying coolers and boxes of wine, Tyler describes paddling for 12 days in Northern Saskatchewan without seeing another soul. Even in the province's "busier" paddling areas around Missinipi on the Churchill River, traffic is minimal compared to other Canadian paddling destinations. The geological diversity adds another layer of fascination. In the "Pelican Window" area, paddlers can find three-billion-year-old Precambrian rock formations that create dramatic landscapes unlike anything you'd expect from Saskatchewan. Tyler's eyes light up describing the Athabasca Sand Dunes, Hunt Falls (the province's largest waterfall), and ancient pictographs along historic voyageur routes that connect the province's vast network of lakes and rivers. For those inspired to explore Saskatchewan's hidden waterways, Tyler recommends connecting with local outfitters and using resources like GoTrekker maps. Many routes remain undocumented, requiring paddlers to study satellite imagery and topographic maps – adding an element of genuine exploration to each trip. As Tyler puts it: "There's so much to explore here and so much that's undocumented. That's where I keep my focus – trying to document these different routes that no one really knows about."Ready for a paddling adventure that defies expectations?
