I was sad to learn that NY Times bestselling author F. Paul Wilson suffered from a stroke. He is working to get back to health, but in my attempt to send healing vibes, I made a 20-minute bonus video with six reasons why you should be reading F. Paul Wilson. Paul was on the podcast twice, although he also appeared once on Dickheads for a panel about Tony Boucher. The first time he joined Postcards the interview was done before I had a podcast. I was teaching a class on novel outlining and I talked to Paul for background. Then I interviewed him for his latest novel for episode 60. Returning to the podcast is one of my all-time favorite authors, F.Paul Wilson. He is the New York Times bestselling author of the Repairman Jack series. The majority of Paul's work fits into a saga he and his fans called the Secret History of the World. It is an interconnected universe that puts the Dark Tower and the MCU to shame including two separate book series that ends with the same book. This year Paul released Double Threat a book in the secret history but it stands alone (well with a sequel). In this interview, we warm up with a little bit of FPW's history and some golden age sci-fi talk and then get into his new novel. It is a re-imaging of his debut space opera novel Healer, set in modern times. There is lots of nuts and bolts talk of the writing process from one of the best to ever do it. •You can find my books here: Amazon-https://www.amazon.com/David-Agranoff/e/B004FGT4ZW •And me here: Goodreads-http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/2988332.David_Agranoff Twitter-https://twitter.com/DAgranoffAuthor Blog-http://davidagranoff.blogspot.com/

F.Paul Wilson is the bestselling author of science fiction and Horror. He is one of my all-time favorite writers, and since I read The Keep in the 8th grade I have been a devoted fan. This is NOT an interview. In 2017 when this was recorded I was preparing to teach a class on writing horror novels at the Horrible imaginings Film Fest here in San Diego. My part of the class was about writing outlines for plot and structure. I had taken a class on the subject with F. Paul Wilson at the Borderlands Writers Boot Camp but that was not the only reason I wanted to talk with him. Marvel has the MCU and Wilson has The Secret History. It spans almost three-book series, a trilogy, and several stand-alone novels and Short Stories. Starting in his novels Black Wind and The Keep (on my top ten horror novels of all time list) and ends in the novel Night World. That one book is the sixth novel of one series (Adversary Cycle) and fifteenth of another series(Repairman Jack). I read the whole secret history as it was in 2012, and it is one of my all-time favorite reading experiences. It is the most insanely interweaving saga constructed in fiction that I have ever seen. Equal to or even surpassing King's Dark Tower when you talk about a single author interweaving most of their work. He is at it again with a new addition to Adversary Cycle in 2020 called Signalz. (Check out his new interview on the Horror Show With Brian Keene for details on that book) So this not an interview, just an open discussion about plotting. Note the book Paul was working on was The God Gene, and he talks about changes he was making the day this was recorded. Enjoy. •You can find my books here: Amazon-https://www.amazon.com/David-Agranoff/e/B004FGT4ZW •And me here: Goodreads-http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/2988332.David_Agranoff Twitter-https://twitter.com/DAgranoffAuthor Blog-http://davidagranoff.blogspot.com/

Greetings, and welcome back to Horror Business. We have one awesome episode in store for you! In this episode we’re talking about 1983’s The Keep and 1996’s Apt Pupil. And, as an added bonus, we’re joined by long time friend of the show Ryan Sawyer! We apologize for some of the audio issues including Ryan’s recent horror activities, which was unfortunately cut off. First and foremost we want to give a shoutout to our sponsors over at Lehigh Valley Apparel Creations, the premiere screen-printing company of the Lehigh Valley. Chris Reject and his merry band of miscreants are ready to work with you to bring to life your vision of a t-shirt for your business, band, project, or whatever else it is you need represented by a shirt, sweater, pin, or coozy. Head on over to www.xlvacx.com to check them out. Also, thank you to our Patreon subscribers. Your support means the world to us and we are eternally grateful for that support. Thanks! We start by briefly discussing what we’ve done lately involving horror. Liam talks about the final Exhumed Films event at the Lightbox Film Center and seeing Joker and Doctor Sleep, and Justin talks about seeing the films Sweetheart, Velvet Buzzsaw, Antrum, Wounds, Harpoon, Hush, and Happy Death Day 2U. We begin by talking about The Keep. We each discuss how we first became aware of the film (Ryan being introduced by a friend, Liam through cable TV, and Justin through the work of F. Paul Wilson). We discuss the troubled production of the film and how Michael Mann was somewhat handcuffed by Paramount’s meddling. We briefly touch upon Wilson’s view of the film and how it’s softened over time. We examine the various shortcomings of the film: oftentimes it feels incomplete, rushed, and half formed. We briefly talk about the film’s divergence from the source material and how that takes away from the heart of the story (moral dilemma, a lack of stakes, muddled mythology, etc). We talk about the surreal and fascinating imagery of the film and how the almost makes up for the confusing narrative. We briefly talk about the larger interconnected mythos of F. Paul Wilson’s fiction (the Adversary Cycle and the Repairman Jack saga). Next up is Apt Pupil. We begin by giving a brief summary of the film. We talk about the problematic nature of Brian Singer and how his films are often viewed through the lens of his crimes. We touch upon the homoerotic subtext of the film and the idea of “the male gaze” being cast upon Brad Renfro. We briefly talk about how the film is reminiscent of the film In A Glass Cage and how the film treats the concept of Nazi war crimes with something like velvet gloves. We talk about how the film weakly attempts to frame the death drive of Nazism in through sexual tension between Renfro and McKellan via BDSM, and we again discuss the problematic nature of Brian Singer making a film about an older man engaging in quasi-BDSM with a teenager. Ryan brings up the concept about how both films revolve around the idea of something being suppressed and that something being released to wreak havoc on the world in some way. We touch upon the questionable view of Nazism as a corrupting ideology as opposed to an ideology that attracts corrupt people and allows them to act out their evil desires. We briefly discuss what we actually enjoyed about the film but this turns into how the film hasn’t really aged all that well. First, and foremost, a huge thanks to Ryan for being rad enough to come and talk to use about these films. Also thank you to everyone and anyone who donated on Patreon, checked this episode out, or shared a tweet/shared a post on FB/gave us love by recommending us to someone. We love you forever for listening. Any questions, comments, suggestions for movies and guests, or if you yourself want to join us for a movie viewing or even an episode, can be sent to thehorrorbiz@gmail.com. More of a straight crime novel than the later books of the Repairman Jack saga, DARK CITY is a perfect entry point for new readers and is sure to excite Wilson’s legion of fans by shedding more light on the background of their favorite “fix-it” man. In this episode I interview F. Paul Wilson, also Guest of Honor at Necon 32. Writing bestsellers for over thirty years now (including the popular Repairman Jack series), Wilson’s first published novel, in 1976, was the medical thriller Healer. He’s also written science fiction, horror, and supernatural novels. In his novel Midnight Mass, published in 2004, vampires try to take over the world. Wilson recently collaborated on a vampire novel, Draculas, with authors Jeff Strand (who I also interviewed in this series), Jack Kilborn (J. A. Konrath), and Blake Crouch. This novel features a different view of vampires than Midnight Mass. Wilson gives us the story behind writing both novels and answers the question, “Why the cross-wearing rabbi?” This interview was recorded at a convention, so there are varying levels of background noise.
