Loaded Radio Podcast: Greg Burgess of Allegaeon Discusses 'The Ossuary Lens' & Warfield Talks Thrash Metal TL;DR On this episode of the Loaded Radio Podcast, Scott Penfold sits down with Greg Burgess of Allegaeon to discuss the band's latest album, “The Ossuary Lens”, which was released on April 4 via Metal Blade Records. This marks the band's first new music featuring original vocalist Ezra Haynes since his departure in 2015. Also featured is a conversation with German thrash metal trio Warfield, who recently released their new album, “With The Old Breed” via Napalm Records. Allegaeon Returns with 'The Ossuary Lens' Technical death metal powerhouse Allegaeon has unleashed their latest full-length album, “The Ossuary Lens,” released on April 4 via Metal Blade Records. This album marks a significant moment for the band, as it is their first release with original vocalist Ezra Haynes since his 2015 departure following the “Elements Of The Infinite” album. The return of Haynes brings back Allegaeon's brutal and technically dazzling sound, which fans have been eagerly awaiting. The band's latest single, “Driftwood,” serves as a powerful introduction to the new record, with its unique blend of melodic, technical death metal — a sound Haynes describes as “melotech.” “We're just so happy to finally release new music,” said Greg Burgess. “We're working on a full album's worth of material, but I feel like it's gonna drop kind of in chunks and then hopefully the rest of it all at once kind of thing.” Recording once again with producer Dave Otero at Flatline Audio studio in Denver, Allegaeon continues their 17-year relationship with the producer. “Dave always provides a comfortable working environment, amazing ideas, and a career-spanning understanding of what has made Allegaeon, Allegaeon,” added Burgess. The album's overarching theme focuses on various perspectives of death, with each track exploring a unique viewpoint. Haynes explained, “Each song essentially is a different topic, however there is always a different perspective of death tied to each subject.” Allegaeon's Latest Album - 'The Ossuary Lens' Track Listing: 01. Refraction 02. Chaos Theory 03. Driftwood 04. Dies Irae 05. The Swarm 06. Carried By Delusion 07. Dark Matter Dynamics 08. Imperial 09. Wake Circling Above 10. Scythe Warfield - German Thrash Metal Titans Alongside the conversation with Greg Burgess, the Loaded Radio Podcast also features an interview with German thrash metal band Warfield. Their latest album, “With The Old Breed,” was released via Napalm Records and continues their tradition of relentless thrash metal inspired by bands like Slayer, Sodom, Kreator, and the Bay Area Thrash scene. Warfield, consisting of Johannes Clemens (Vocals & Bass), Matthias Clemens (Guitar), and Dominik Marx (Drums), is known for their aggressive approach to social and political themes, which they express through their brutal and fast-paced sound. Their most recent album follows their 2018 debut, “Wrecking Command,” which was released via Metal on Met

In case you haven't heard it, the piece is a highly operatic setting of the historic Catholic funeral Mass, composed by the irreligious Giuseppe Verdi to mourn the death of his closest friend. The music was exquisite, the performers were among the most talented in the world, and I was comfy in a seat in the lavish Avery Fisher Hall. But one thing set my experience apart from most of my fellow music lovers': I believed in every word the singers were delivering — even if the singers didn't and Verdi himself had not. One part of the text of the Dies Irae seems plucked from our current headlines: The section that centers on evils getting exposed, driven into the light. At the General Judgment, every sin ever committed will be unmasked for all to see — so that both God's justice and His mercy will be obvious to each soul ever created. Nature sickens with dismay, Death may not retain its prey; And before the Maker stand All the creatures of his hand. The great book shall be unfurled, Whereby God shall judge the world; What was distant shall be near, What was hidden shall be clear. We are seeing before us today in our country a faint foreshadowing of that great, world-ending exposé. The corruption, perversion, waste, and even hate that pervaded our government agencies and the institutions led by our self-selecting elites are all getting driven out into the light, thanks to the stern measures imposed by President Donald Trump. Please Support The Stream: Equipping Christians to Think Clearly About the Political, Economic, and Moral Issues of Our Day. Neither a Spirit of Fear Nor of Vengeance No, Trump isn't God, or even especially godly as far as we can tell. That bothers me for his sake, but not for ours. Constantine saved the early Church from persecution despite his personal sins, and Charles Martel saved Europe from the Muslim hordes with the bloodstained hands of a war lord. However, insofar as a legitimate earthly ruler wields the sword on God's behalf, becoming “the legitimate avenger of crimes,” a just ruler can do God's will as surely as the Church does in its own quite separate sphere. As we watch the violent antics and lawless abuses of power by the Left unfold in response to Trump's perfectly reasonable efforts to trim down the government and cease its persecution of ordinary citizens, we shouldn't be consumed with worry, afraid he will fail. Nor should we give in to a spirit of vindictiveness, taking a sadistic glee in the suffering of our enemies, however well-deserved. Instead I think we ought to treat this political moment as a little window on the end of time, when every evil is dragged kicking and screaming into the light, even our own. As we pray for this great purge of political filth to fully succeed for the benefit of our nation and our neighbors, keeping such an apocalyptic perspective will help us avoid falling into the Enemy's snares, which he scatters plentifully both on the Left and on the Right. With all of that said, let's review some of the skeletons the Trump team is tossing or driving out of our oligarchs' reeking closets. Road Ragers and Vandals Target Tesla Owners and Their “Nazi Cars” The kind of people who pride themselves on their “compassion” for illegal immigrants, sexual eccentricities, and the government of Ukraine are showing much less tolerance and charity for their fellow Americans — targeting not just people who disagree with them politically, but total strangers who happened to buy a certain brand of car. Owners of Teslas who might not have cared or even known about Elon Musk's political views are now getting menaced on highways, seeing their vehicles vandalized, and otherwise living in fear. Here's one of the worst incidents: Cowardly attacks on unattended Teslas are happening across the country, quite possibly as part of a coordinated effort along the lines of the Antifa and Black Lives Matter protests that savaged America's cities five years ago. And our chattering classes are gibbering their approval like a squadron of flying monkeys, as Joe Rogan reports: Trying to Commit Murder by Police Other violence aimed at conservatives and Christians entails the criminal abuse of police that's colloquially called “SWATting.” That entails making an anonymous call from an untraceable phone to the police, claiming that an “active shooter” is present at the home of some political enemy — then sitting back and watching the news to find out if you successfully got that person, his spouse, or his children gunned down by the cops. Who's getting subjected to such attacks? One victim was gifted Christian author Larry Taunton: Gateway Pundit reports on another potentially grim incident: InfoWars host Owen Shroyer became the latest victim of a “swatting” incident at his home in Austin, Texas in what he calls a “terrorist attack” perpetrated by leftist extremists. A fake police report claiming Shroyer had shot someone led to a full-blown armed raid on his residence, with at least a dozen officers storming his home with weapons drawn. … Shroyer pointed fingers directly at the Democrat Party, naming names and calling for federal authorities to act. “We know what's going on. The Democrat Party and all of their little street thugs — funded by Act Blue, stolen money from USAID, George Soros, and other groups — are behind it. They are behind the terror attacks against Elon Musk,” he said. Keep in mind that just two weeks ago Shroyer's colleague, Jamie White, was murdered while on assignment reporting about leftist political violence. Let's offer prayers of gratitude for the professionalism of the police who managed these incidents, and for protection of nonviolent American citizens just trying to go about their lives at a time when a spirit of savagery seems to have been let loose on our nation. Canceling Elections Our elites aren't quite at the point where they can just cancel elections and jail the conservative candidate, as recently happened in Romania (perhaps with the collusion of American Deep State conspirator Anthony Blinken, according to Diplomatic Affairs.) Our political class was blindsided by Trump's 2016 win, and responded by spraying our media with the manufactured filth of the faked Steele Dossier to push the hoax that Trump was somehow “colluding” with Vladimir Putin's Russia — a charge that led to one of the two fraudulent impeachment efforts aimed at Trump. Here's the great Natalie Winters of Bannon's War Room confronting Christopher Steele himself, and it's glorious to hear a smart conservative be permitted to speak her mind without getting interrupted or shouted down. Just watch his face go from smugness to something approaching shame as Winters holds him accountable. The Russia collusion hoax, with its associated faked prosecutions of Trump allies such as General Mike Flynn, Roger Stone, and others, effectively derailed his first term in office. The COVID panic permitted the Democrats to steal his second term in 2020. Now having failed (thanks to the efforts of shadowy patriots on whom Emerald Robinson has reported) to steal the 2024 race, our oligarchs are trying to nullify its effects via a full-scale judicial coup against the executive branch of government. Thanks to Gov. Ron DeSantis for calling this crime out and suggesting one realistic remedy: As the author of the Dies Irae, channeling sacred scripture, promised us: What was distant shall be near, What was hidden shall be clear. It is a message increasingly echoed from the nation's pulpits, presented as common-sense decency and virtue. Calls for “radical non-violence” are routinely endowed with the imprimatur of religious doctrine. But what if such teachings were misguided, even damaging? What if the potential of a citizenry to exercise force against violent criminals and tyrannical governments is not just compatible with church teaching, but flows from the very heart of Biblical faith and reason? What if the freedoms we treasure are intimately tied to the power to resist violent coercion? This is the long-overdue case John Zmirak makes with stunning clarity and conviction in No Second Amendment, No First. A Yale-educated journalist and former college professor, Zmirak shows how the right of self-defense against authoritarian government was affirmed in both the Old and New Testaments, is implied in Natural Law, and has been part of Church tradition over the centuries. Dmitry Masleev took first prize in the Piano category of the 2015 Tchaikovsky International Competition and since then has released a number of recordings. The latest, from Aparté, is a concertante collection of Liszt's Totentanz, his Rhapsodie espagnole (in a version for piano and orchestra made by Masleev's professor at the Moscow Conservatoire, Mikhail Petukhov) and Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. He was joined by the Svetlanov Symphony Orchestra. James Jolly, who first met Masleev during the 2019 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, caught up with him again to talk about how the competition changed the course of his career, the new album and how the Dies irae theme infuses so many great classical works.

2024 Dec 15 SUN: THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT Zep 3: 14-18a/ Is 12: 2-3. 4. 5-6 (6)/ Phil 4: 4-7/ Lk 3: 10-18 Very quickly, I want to let you know that we have a number of people who are coming forward and seeking to enter the Catholic Christian way of life, and therefore we are planning to reform our team for what we properly call the Order of Christian initiation of adults, the OCIA. You'll remember it used to be called the RCIA for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, but now we're told that Order is the proper word rather than Rite. So we'll be making plans to come together after the first of the year, so you have time to consider whether you might want to participate in the process of bringing people into the Catholic Christian faith. Obviously, today the theme is joy, and we hear this very clearly from St. Paul. We also hear it from the prophet Zephaniah. He wrote a very brief book of about three chapters. It is surprising that he ends up talking about joy, because Zephaniah is also the source of a hymn which we don't sing very much anymore. In Latin it's called the Dies Irae, English is Day of Wrath, and it emphasizes God's anger. So it's surprising that this same prophet should talk to us about our cause for joy for the coming of a Savior. And in the Gospel we find cause for joy as well. We may think of John the Baptist as a severe sort of person, but it says at the end of today's Gospel passage that he preached good news to the people. Well obviously we need to consider joy. Some of you may know that I have made a study on my own of what has been called emotional intelligence. The idea behind that is that we seek to understand our own feeling states. To recognize that, for instance, anger can be channeled into steady work to undo injustice, for instance. When we understand and are at peace with our own feelings, we can look at other people and develop what we might call fellow feeling or empathy with the people in our life, understanding ourselves as feeling people who are necessarily pushed around by the circumstances of life. And we remember at all times if we can be pushed around we are limited creatures of God and we always remember our relationship with God, our Creator. In recent times we've been given a sort of vocabulary for understanding feelings. There have been a couple of animated films that have come out in recent years. The first one, Inside Out, came out in 2015. And then there was a sequel just this last summer: Inside Out 2. And the feelings in one person are characters in the film. And in both, there is the character called Joy, and Joy is understood to be kind of a coordinator among all the feelings. We can think about this and realize that, for any one of us, to have joy is to have a sense of the whole of life, the entirety of life. And we might ask ourselves where is joy when we are feeling sad? -- For instance, when we lose someone close to us. One thing that sadness can do for us is demonstrate to us how important that person was, what a gift he or she was to us. And ultimately it informs a sense of joy, which joy is about the whole picture of life, the whole variety of life. So as we come together on this day of Advent called Rejoice Sunday, Gaudete Sunday, we seek to understand that we can be joyful as we look ahead to our God, specifically Jesus, the Son of God, bringing all things to completion and perfection. We've said in recent weeks that we know of people who just think of that occurrence as "the end of the world." We all have limited imaginations and the notion of the end of the world particularly limits our imaginations because, when all is brought to perfection, that is really the beginning. We step onto the threshold of eternal life itself and an unending joy. So we give thanks that this season of Advent is preparing us to step onto the threshold of eternity, to find our complete vocation in praise of God who created us to praise him without end. ============================================== I left out a lot from Saturday evening. I left out John the Baptist almost entirely, and he is described as bringing "good news" to people. The fact that he tells people, essentially, to do what is expected of you, is a response against elaborate sacrifices for supposedly getting God's attention.
[…] Dano svetu bo spoznanje in za vsako zlo dejanje Bog prisodi maščevanje.« In če iskreno in ponižno premišljujemo o svojem življenju, moramo skupaj s Čelanskim zavpiti: »Kam se čem takrat dejati, kje zavetnika iskati, dobrim komaj bo obstati?« In prositi usmiljenja: »Kralj neskončne visokosti, ki rešuješ iz blagosti! Reši me, vir vseh svetosti! Spomni se, o Jezus mili, da so zame Te umorili, prosim, tisti dan se usmili. […] Da grešil sem, se sramujem, krivdo svojo obžalujem, - Prizanesi, Bog! - zdihujem. Duše si iskal zgubljene, reševal si spokorjene, reši, prosim, tudi mene.« V dneh, ko se s posebno skrbnostjo spominjamo naših rajnih, prosimo dobrega Boga, naj jih očisti njihovih prestopkov in jim nakloni večno veselje, nam pa pomaga, da se resnosti svojih odločitev in svojega življenja zavemo že tukaj, zdaj, ter poskušamo popraviti tisto, kar smo zagrešili, kadar nas ni vodila ljubezen do Boga ali bližnjega.

One of the great roles of Holy Mother Church is to teach us how to speak to God, to create in our hearts the proper dispositions of religion. She does this especially through her liturgy, where we have a ceremony prepared for us such that all we have to do is enter into it and make ourselves one with it, as far as possible, in order to become holy. One of the most powerful ways in which the Church teaches us the sentiments we should have in our souls, and creates those sentiments in us is through her hymns. There are hundreds upon hundreds of hymns that have been created throughout the centuries, providing the Church with a vast musical repertoire.Among them all, there are two, however, that seem to stand out above the rest, two hymns of sorrow, two hymns concerned with the most lamentable topic possible: death. One is the Dies Irae, about the Last Judgment; the other is the Stabat Mater, about Our Lady witnessing the death of Our Lord. Both were composed in the 1200s; both were used as sequences at Mass and were among the five sequences that were kept by Pope Pius V when he canonized the Tridentine Mass. Both of them were set to music by great composers on their deathbed. Mozart was composing music for the Dies Irae when he died at the age of 35; Pergolesi was composing music for the Stabat Mater when he died at the age of 26.Both of them were lost to the liturgy of the Church when the Novus Ordo Mass got rid of Latin and Gregorian Chant. We are blessed to be able to hold on to them and profit from them by holding on to the traditional Mass.We are more familiar with the Stabat Mater than the Dies Irae because we sing the Stabat Mater whenever we pray the Stations of the Cross during Lent. The Franciscans have a great devotion to the Passion of Our Lord and you know that St. Francis of Assisi received the very wounds of Our Lord in his body. Less than a century after the death of St. Francis, the Franciscan Jacopone da Todi composed the Stabat Mater. His composition is so beautiful and inspiring that over 300 composers have set the words of the hymn to music. The hymns has twenty stanzas. The first four stanzas set the scene by telling the story of what is happening; the next four stanzas make an appeal to the one listening to the hymn to have sympathy for this mother who is standing at the foot of the cross of her dying Son. Then there are ten stanzas addressed directly to Our Lady, making beautiful requests of her. Finally, the hymn ends with two stanzas addressed to Our Lord, asking Him that we may go to Heaven when we die.I would like for us to focus upon those ten stanzas in the middle of the hymn where we make our appeal to Our Lady.

Formed in late 2019, Para Bellum is a Hard Rock/Heavy Metal band based out of Butler, Pennsylvania. In their short existence, Para Bellum has quickly become a fixture in the local music scene, and as one radio DJ suggested, “have become one of the hardest working bands in the area.” When not spending time writing and recording new material, they can usually be found playing in numerous charity/fundraisings shows as well as several indoor and outdoor music festivals for organizations such as Rock for Life, Shady Lady, and Speedfreak Motorsports. They also enjoy playing split shows with a variety of different bands. In the winter of 2020, they found themselves at world famous Rattle Clack Recording Studio in Pittsburgh, PA to start on their upcoming self-titled cd. In early 2021, they released their first single I Die Alone (which deals with veteran PTSD and suicide), and immediately starting garnering airplay and accolades. These included, the daily #1 on Banks Radio in Perth, Australia, 2021 regional winner in both the songwriting and band categories at the VAACF, and being featured on 97.7 FM's the Grass Roots Show. Their rise through the scene continued with the release of another single, Dies Irae, in spring 2021 followed by a CD release in May of 2022. To date, Para Bellum has had six songs featured on the Grass Roots show, several songs in current radio rotation, two chart topping hits abroad, and been heard in over 17 countries.
As Savonarola languishes in his prison cell, his faith is tested. Reckoning with his inner battle between hope and despair, Savonarola would then write a series of religious tracts that have since taken on great theological significance. Savonarola creates a spectacular demonstration of public virtue in the hopes of turning Florence's fortunes around. Meanwhile, Pope Alexander VI has the monk excommunicated- a decision Savonarola was determined to fight against to his last breath. All Scripture is inspired by God and beneficial for teaching, for rebuke, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man or woman of God may be fully capable, equipped for every good work. – 1 Timothy 3:16-17 God speaks to us through the Bible. That Book embodies His words. Creation itself is the visible embodiment of His power and wisdom. It is the result of His words. This Book of His is, in a different way, the effect of His speaking. It is His written wisdom and power. There is His voice to us. The thunder and tempest are His loud voice of grandeur. The sunshine and the gentle breeze are His still small voice. But deeper, clearer, keener, softer, and still more penetrating than all of these is His written Word to us. The Bible is what it is because it contains the words of God. It is through the Word, and in connection with it, that God communicates with us. The Word revives: Your word has revived me (Psalm 119:50). The word produces faith: Faith comes from hearing (Romans 10:17). The Word strengthens, comforts, heals, nourishes, and revives. It gets into contact with each part of our souls and works its own work there. And it does this because it is divine. No human words could be trusted to work the work in a human soul so unrestrictedly. It is not eloquence, poetry, nor argument, but something more than all these together. It is something peculiar and indescribable, which man could not have formed and which he cannot understand, that makes it so suitable for the soul of a foolish and sinful man.
Jess Gillam swaps favourite music with the mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter Anne Sofie is one of classical music's most celebrated singers with a huge back catalogue of recordings, and she's also known for her huge versatility and musical curiosity working with artists from conductors Claudio Abbado and Giuseppe Sinopoli to Elvis Costello, Brad Mehldau and Rufus Wainwright. Today though she's listening to other people's recordings, as she and Jess sat down together to listen to a Janacek fanfare and a headphone blasting piece of Verdi. Jess picks a Nina Simone track that left them both speechless, while Anne Sofie brought along a ravishing piece by Rameau and (quite literally) turned up the volume on a barnstorming Beyoncé track. From Mad Max to Django Unchained, Verdi's Dies Irae gets used in films, TV shows and computer games to summon up drama, chaos and catastrophe. But why was it written in the first place? What makes it so dramatic? And what is a Dies Irae anyway? We reveal all as well as getting inside the musical mind of one of Hollywood's most sought-after film composers – the creator of soundtracks for Shrek, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Martian, X-Men Origins, House of Gucci and many others, Harry Gregson-Williams. Hello, co-pilots and curious star hoppers. Welcome to Spaceman's Transmissions, your home away from home in the aural universe, and your most trusted source of inflight entertainment during that peaceful ascent into the ether. I'm aware that there are many of you out there that have given up on your ability of assembling the dream machine into a working apparatus. You dismiss dreams as an escapable entity, afforded to only a privileged few. ----more---- It seems as though we have all experienced the phenomenon of déjà vu at some points in our lives. Wasn't I here before, why is this familiar, don't I know this person from somewhere? In many cases, if we dug deep enough into the well of our own creatively subliminal souls, we could find that it was our own bubbling well of dream intuition which had brought us to that magical space. This proves that those dreams are there, somewhat hidden or obscured, by other pieces of information that create a cloud cover. My mission is to assist you in dissipating that cloud cover and leading you to the field of creative wonder. Take steps to learn about lucid dreaming and documenting your dreams once you awaken. Find ways to be creative without being critical or dismissive of your artistic abilities. These practices will open a creative portal in which the tides of color and light will flow. No one is born and able to speak a language, ride a bike, or navigate a spacecraft to the stars. It's all a learned process that takes practice and determination. Navigating to the dreamer's landscape is no different. We tend to dismiss obscure dreams as a hindrance, or an utter confusion of entangled nonsense and senseless weirdness. However, dear listener, it's much deeper than that. Travel to that forgotten land of dreams and build a mental bridge to your waking self. Lather, rinse, repeat. Turn on, tune in, sleep... https://www.tonepoet-music.com https://www.facebook.com/tonepoetmusic TRACK LISTING “Blue Light of Morning (Flickers)” by Swartz et from Nighttide (10 Year Deluxe Version) (Start Time: 00:00) “Cloudface” by Delia Derbyshire Appreciation Society from Delia Derbyshire Appreciation Society (Start Time: 04:54) “Capacitor Weavers” by Conrad Praetzel from Adventures Into Somethingness (Start Time: 08:25) “Dies Irae” by Felix Rösch from Mya (Start Time: 09:33) “Disposable Glances” by halftribe from Lucent Forms Travelling (Start Time: 10:43) “Komorebi (deletion 47)” by Monogoto from Partial Deletion of Everything (Vol. 2) (Start Time: 15:18) “All In Circles” by Shida Shahabi from Shifts (Start Time: 18:55) “Requiem for Dying Mothers (Part 2)” by Stars Of The Lid from The Tired Sounds Of... Frizz and Bob creep into the spoOOoky season with a Southern Tier Warlock Imperial Pumpkin Stout, as we celebrate Halloween with a spoOOoky episode on history's favorite deathly melody that we know so well (yet, still so little): the Dies Irae. We fall down the rabbit hole of this 800 year old Gregorian chant written by candlelight, the crazy classical music that it created, how it has been hidden all throughout our favorite music and movies, and the secret ability it has to send a chill up our spine.
Synopsis On today's date, Elvis left the building – permanently. On August 16, 1977, Elvis Presley died in Memphis, Tennessee. Born in Tupelo, Mississippi in 1935, Elvis first earned his living as a mechanic and furniture repairman who occasionally played cowboy ballads on the guitar at parties. But somehow Elvis reinvented himself and became the archetypal rock 'n' roll superstar, revered more as the modern day reincarnation of the Greek god Dionysius than a mere mortal. His funeral caused such an outpouring of hysteria and that two people died in the chaos and many more were injured. There was even a bizarre plot at the time to kidnap Elvis' corpse and hold it for ransom. And, of course, some people claim he never died at all. American composer Michael Daughtery has taken pop icons like Elvis as the inspiration for a number of his concert works. He has even written a bassoon concerto titled "Dead Elvis" – a set of variations on the Dies Irae theme from the Latin Mass for the Dead. In performance, the composer asks that the soloist enter in the familiar costume of Las Vegas Elvis – sunglasses and a rhinestone-encrusted white jumpsuit with a plunging, open, neckline. Hip gyrations are optional. Michael Daugherty writes: "Elvis is a part of American culture, history, and mythology, for better or for worse. Sort of-guest Arwen Myers—soprano, Sweeney stan, and executive producer of this podcast—joins Peter and Nathan for a wide-reaching conversation about her favorite musical, which just happens to be about murder & meat pies (& Victor Garber). That's right: it's the 1979 Tony-Award winning Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street! We talk about: - The medieval chant Dies Irae and how it frames Sweeney Todd as a story about death, violence, and revenge with explicitly religious overtones. – Who's the real villain of Sweeney Todd? We talk about how none of these characters are who they appear to be, and how the music helps to signal what's going on underneath. – The various versions of Christianity that haunt this show, notions of sacred violence, sin & sacrifice, and the redemptive promise—or false lure?—of blood. – The social and cultural aspects of the world that's being presented – and we make of the warning embedded in this very dark musical. Is Sweeney "out there..." or is he inside each of us? You'll hear: Angela Lansbury, Len Cariou, Ken Jennings, Victor Garber, and Edmund Lyndeck on the Original Broadway Cast Recording singing "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd," "A Little Priest," "Johanna," "The Worst Pies in London," "Epiphany," and "Not While I'm Around." Continue the conversation with Peter (@pgeinvan) and Nathan (@nathan_lerud) on Twitter, and follow the Gospel of Musical Theatre on Instagram or Twitter @gospelofmt.

How do you orchestrate a painting? How do you take the detail and the visual imagery of a painting and translate that into something that is so vivid that even if you've never seen the painting before in your life, you can picture it as clearly as if it was right in front of you? Most people look at a painting for no longer than a minute or two at a museum, so how do you sustain that image over nearly 20 minutes of music? Well, to answer all of these questions, all you need to do is look at Rachmaninoff's brilliant tone poem, The Isle of the Dead, which he wrote in 1908. In 1907 Rachmaninoff saw a black and white reproduction of a painting by the Swiss artist Arnold Bocklin entitled The Isle fo the Dead. This painting had cause a storm of interest all across Europe. Vladimir Nabokov said that prints of the painting were found in every home of Berlin, Sigmund Freud owned a copy, as did Lenin. Bocklin painted 5 different version of the piece, but they all had the same theme - a desolate haunting image of a large rocky island, with a solitary boat with a coffin approaching it. It is said that the painting portrays the mythological river Styx, and even reproduced on the computer, it is a striking image. From that encounter, Rachmaninoff sat down and created one of his most underrated and enduring compositions, the masterful Isle of the Dead, which features a gigantic orchestra that very rarely shows off its full power, a rhythmic character that is both inevitable and unstable, and an unsettling and haunting theme that followed Rachmaninoff throughout his life, the Dies Irae. We're going to talk all about this brooding and mysterious piece on this Patreon sponsored episode this week - join us!

Latina shares her love of words, sonnets and poetry. The Lacrimosa (Latin for "weeping/tearful"), also a name that derives from Our Lady of Sorrows, a title given to The Virgin Mary, is part of the Dies Irae sequence in the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass. Its text comes from the Latin 18th and 19th stanzas of the sequence. Many composers, including Mozart, Berlioz, and Verdi have set the text as a discrete movement of the Requiem. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
When Luke looks out at the Burning Homestead, we hear an overt reference to the first four notes of Dies Irae. What is the meaning of this musical meme? Where else does the Dies Irae show up in Star Wars? Alex Ludwig AKA "Dies Irae guru" joins us today to help us gain a deeper understanding of this foundational musical trope. Discussion: 00:00 - Hello there! 03:33 - What is Dies Irae? 04:56 - "Dies Irae" Gregorian chant clip. 06:05 - Dies Irae in the "Burning Homestead" clip. 08:10 - The 3 types of Dies Irae references. 08:20 - Type 1: full chant statement. 11:13 - Type 2: four-note statement, most common type. 14:04 - Type 3: ostinato pattern 16:26 - Why is type 3 the most controversial? 17:26 - Sensitivity vs. specificity. 19:20 - Assessing the Dies Irae-ness of "Alternate Binary Sunset" cue. 21:08 - If we're steeped in modern Western tonal language (most of us are), Dies Irae can sound like it outlines a minor triad, with sadness coded into it. 24:38 - Xanthe thinks "Burning Homestead" example is hopeful, while Alex does not. (Music interpretation is subjective!) 27:36 - Rhythmic displacement and John Williams planting the seeds of tension prior to the actual Dies Irae instance. 31:39 - Does the music sound sad, or is it sad, because we are connecting it with the story? Chicken or the egg. 32:02 - Chaotic listening experiment #1: Gregorian chant edition. 34:00 - Original characteristics of Dies Irae. 37:46 - Frank Lehman shoutout. We are fans. 38:33 - Chaotic listening experiment #2: Star Wars edition. Would you consider those "Dies Irae" or not? 41:33 - Coincidences. 43:38 - Would we diagnose the music in Obi-Wan's hut with a case of Dies Irae? (listening example). Alex and Xanthe have different answers. 45:42 - The Force Awakens, Rey's journey, answering the hero's call, how Dies Irae might play in. 48:48 - Rogue One Dies Iraes. 50:40 - Multiple transformations of Dies Irae, Mozart, Verdi, Romantic programmatic music, etc. From chant to sacred setting to secular spooky piece to Hollywood. 55:13 - Late 19th century composers influenced the first wave of film composers; Dies Irae may have been passed down. 58:41 - Catholic perspectives on Dies Irae. The "Dies Irae" was actually dropped by the Vatican because it was thought to be too frightening. However, some Catholics find it awe-inspiring, as it invites them to a "deeper, more serious faith," grasping that "choices and actions have eternal consequences." 1:04:47 - Is Dies Irae a meme, a trope, or both? 1:08:48 - Do you think the Dies Irae will be played out pretty soon? Is it too cliche now that it's blown up so much? 1:09:53 - A question for listeners! 1:15:04 - Overview of the soundscape in the rest of these 5 minutes. This episode is about music and sound heard in minutes 36-40 of Star Wars: A New Hope. Obi-Wan finally hears Princess Leia's message, Luke isn't ready to go to Alderaan, and Vader finds Admiral Motti's lack of faith disturbing. Today, Elizabeth Lain joins me in a discussion about oboes, Death Star sound design, sonic screen wipes, and more! Where else have we heard it? For one, it sounds a lot like Jyn's theme in Rogue One. But both of those could also be interpreted as plays on Dies Irae. 27:43 - Hologram as a metaphor. 28:53 - "How am I every going to explain this?" "Learn about the Force, Luke" Cue Force theme. 32:18 - "I can take you as far as Anchorhead." 33:11 - Death Star motif accompanying the exterior shot of space/Star Destroyer. But before that, we hear what Elizabeth calls a "sonic screen wipe." 35:27 - The silent Death Star conference room. 37:33 - Jk, it's totally not silent. This is Ben Burtt's time to shine. 39:49 - How Ben Burtt designed the Death Star sounds. 44:35 - How Ben Burtt designed the ambient electronic, telemetry sounds. 46:43 - "Until this battle station is fully operational, we are vulnerable." 48:09 - What if there were music in this part? What makes the Death Star feel scary. 49:27 - Power dynamics between Vader and Tarkin. 56:04 - What keeps Xanthe up at night with regard to Vader. 1:01:40 - Back on Tatooine as Luke, Ben, and the droids discover the remains of an attack. 1:01:58 - Solo trumpet leads us into the next cue, and it builds gradually. The worldbuilding that occurs in this scene. 1:08:44 - Tempo picks up as Luke rushes to his landspeeder. 1:13:11 - A pretty bad pun, sorry. 1:13:33 - Interesting sound design thing Elizabeth noticed with the speeder on screen. 1:15:38 - SWMM Questionnaire 1:19:06 - Rundown of musical themes and soundtrack stuff from these minutes. 1:19:49 - Where to find Elizabeth, upcoming stuff, goodbyes.
