A few months ago, I had the honor of being a guest on Cathy Heller’s podcast, Don’t Keep Your Day Job, and I am thrilled that I get to have her on mine. Not only could I talk to her for hours and hours, but she has an incredible story that I know so many of you will resonate with.  From early on, Cathy knew she was meant for more and sought to find her purpose in the world (she admits there were multiple attempts). She changed her major to World Religions to truly find out if there was “more,” and ended up taking a life-changing three-year trip to Jerusalem. After returning, Cathy moved to L.A. to see if she could make a career out of her love for singing and music. It took a lot of work, but she eventually landed a record deal. Unfortunately, her record label dropped her before it even had a chance to release. Feeling defeated at first, she bailed on the music and landed herself other “practical” jobs ranging from real estate and casting to floral and interior design. None of these fulfilled her though and she set out determined to find other ways to make money singing and songwriting – and help others at the same time.   Fast-forward to today and you’ve likely heard Cathy’s songs on your favorite TV shows, ads and more. She cracked the code to making money while fulfilling her purpose and now helps others do the same. In the past year, Cathy has taken it to another level as well by creating her podcast, which takes her knowledge and easily parallels it to anyone else’s passion project.   Cathy keeps it real and is the first to say that no one wants to see perfect – they want authenticity. Once you listen, I know you’ll agree. Tune in to hear all the goodness Cathy shares with us. I know that you’ll wrap up your listening session feeling just a little lighter and like you’re one small step closer to stepping into your purpose.   --      Question Highlights: Can you tell us a bit about your background and your journey that led you to where you are now? What pulled you to keep going through the various stage of your career/life? How do we get people involved and excited? Outreach leads to some of the same questions when it comes to content too, right? What do you say to someone who struggles with perfection?   In This Episode We Talk about: Cathy’s life and career journey that led her to where she is today The many attempts made by Cathy to find her purpose – record deals, real estate, interior design etc. The online course Cathy created to teach others how to license their songs to TV and film How Cathy transitioned her knowledge to the podcast platform The difference between a hobby and business Finding your audience and who you’re creating things for How you can make a living by doing four specific things Why outreach and the value you can add is important Creating content Authenticity Why we must be willing to be uncomfortable Consistency and showing up And so much more…   Quotes “The mind likes to suffer, but I don’t need to.”   “The opposite of depression is purpose.”   “Success without meaning or fulfillment is an ultimate failing.”   “What makes any business works is radical empathy.”   “Vulnerability is the most powerful tool anyone has.”   “Wherever you are, there’s something you have that you can help somebody with.”   “We are all in beta – no one has it together.”   “Be willing to be a mess and do it anyway.” --   Cathy Heller is a fire hose of inspiration. She’s the host of the popular podcast, Don’t Keep Your Day Job, and was recently given the No. 1 spot on iTunes show recommendation list for the New Year. Each week, Cathy encourages thousands and thousands of listeners to find more purpose in their life and get paid to do what they love full time. She started out as a singer/songwriter and found success licensing her music to TV, film and ads. Quickly she became a stand-out in her field and was featured in magazines like Billboard, Variety and the LA Weekly. She started teaching online courses to artists which were quite successful and she’s been asked to speak at Podcast Movement, Social Media Worldwide, UCLA, Berklee School of Music, The Grammy Museum and the Billboard Film/TV Conference.   Since starting her podcast, Cathy’s show has been mentioned in the NY Times and Inc. Magazine’s “Top 9 podcasts.” She’s been featured several times by Apple and her fans are resonating with how genuine she is. Throughout the show, she has interviewed creative entrepreneurs like designer Jonathan Adler, make-up artist Bobbi Brown, dancer Mandy Moore, fashionista Tamara Mellon, novelist Emily Giffin and Gretchen Rubin to name a few. Cathy’s girl-next-door approach and out-of-the-box hustling style is helping so many people feel hopeful and excited about what lies ahead. Cathy often says “purpose is the opposite of depression,” and she truly helps lift people to be the happiest version of themselves. 227: Make an Impact by FOLLOWING YOUR PASSION with Val Chmerkovskiy

As some of you know, my husband and I are huge fans of ballroom dancing, so it’s only natural that we’re huge fans of Dancing with the Stars’ Val Chmerkovskiy. After spending time with him earlier this year in Guatemala with Pencils of Promise, I just knew I needed to have him on the show to share more about his story and why making an impact is so important.   Born in Ukraine, at age 8, he and his family immigrated to Brooklyn, NY. As you can imagine it was a challenging transition but his parents inspired him to meet challenges by never backing away from theirs. To help occupy him and his brother’s time, they were enrolled in both violin and later on ballroom dancing. This soon became a passion for the whole family. In addition to Val and his brother Maks’ successful dance careers, they have since opened 14 other dance studios.   I cannot wait for you to hear Val’s inspiring story. Not only is he so passionate about his own life and what he does, he also hopes to inspire others to do the same. Tune in to hear how’s he connecting with others to do just that and how he’s making an impact in the world today.    --      Question Highlights: What did your life look like growing up and where did your passion for what you do now come from? What is most exciting in your life right now? Was not giving up or quitting a mindset that you were taught growing up? What do you think it takes to be a good leader/mentor? What have you learned from being on your 50-city tour? Do you still get nervous before you perform?   In This Episode We Talk about: Why Val is so inspired by his parents How Val and his brother got into dance (and violin) Val’s (and his parents’) entrepreneurial spirit Why it’s essential to have pride without the ego Why mentorship is important to Val Forming connections and making an impact with others Val’s 50-city tour Why Val loves seeing others who are passionate about what they do And much more…   Quotes How can I possibly dwell in my own success without having the energy of wanting to pass it forward and reciprocate?”   “A blessing isn’t realized until it’s passed forward.”   “I feel most fulfilled when I have a purpose.”   “Trust your track record.”   “Be nervous because you care, but don’t sell yourself short.” --   Valentin “Val” Chmerkovskiy was born in Odessa, Ukraine to an engineer mother and marine merchant father. At 8 years old, Val’s family immigrated to Brooklyn, NY as refugees seeking asylum from the corrupt ex-communist nation. It was in a small Eastern European community in South Brooklyn where Val first picked up ballroom dancing as an after school activity that his parents hoped would keep him out of trouble. Soon after, Val found another passion in playing the violin, further easing the nerves of his parents as the arts kept their curious son off the South Brooklyn streets. Although he resisted the temptation of Hollywood for a few years, in 2011 Val eventually joined his brother Maks as a member of the cast of professional dancers on Dancing with the Stars for its 13th installment. The 14-time US National Champion and two-time World Dance Champion quickly rose to stardom, becoming a fan-favorite for his impeccable performances and unique demeanor. Val won his first Dancing with the Stars Mirrorball Trophy with partner Rumer Willis during the ten-year anniversary season of the show. He later took home his second title in 2016 while partnered with Olympic Gold Medalist Laurie Hernandez. Most recently, Val was partnered with Paralympic swimmer Victoria Arlen, making it all the way to the semi-finals for which he choreographed a dance that brought a wheelchair into the world famous DWTS Ballroom for the first time. Val is the first and only American to ever win the IDSF Junior and Youth World Championship, along with the prestigious British “Blackpool” Open, the German Open and the Asian Championships in Shenzhen, China. After overseeing the biggest youth ballroom dance program in the US, the Rising Stars Dance Academy, Val co-founded Dance With Me, one of the nation’s leading social dance studios, where he also lends his expertise as Art Director. Longing to continue his work with kids, Val implemented the Dance With Me Juniors program with the mission of keeping kids active, healthy, and creative. Val supports numerous educational organizations and children’s charities, including the Children’s Hospital of LA and Pencils of Promise, for which he helped build two schools in Ghana using the funds he raised for the organization. He also spent the last two years mentoring kids at the KIPP Scholar Academy in South Los Angeles and brought his most improved mentees along to live tapings of Dancing with the Stars to inspire them to continue working hard. As a classically trained violinist, Val has performed at Carnegie Hall and at Lincoln Center as a concertmaster for the ISO Youth Orchestra. He is fluent in English and Russian. Val recently finished writing his first memoir titled “I’ll Never Change my Name,” set to be released in March 2018. I’m so thankful that I stumbled across life coach, Chris Lee, on Lewis Howes’ podcast awhile back and that I since have had the honor of talking to him in person and now on Earn Your Happy! With over 27 years of experience in the arena of mindfulness and emotional intelligence, I had a feeling our conversation would be epic – and I know you won’t be disappointed.   With a childhood spent in Puerto Rico as a Jewish American, Chris’ life was not picture perfect. He was bullied and made fun of for his religion but his strong mother helped him to realize that he was able to look beyond the current situation and see how he could support his own life and make the situation better. He thought that if he could make the best out of this situation, that he could also help teach other people to do the same.   What I love about Chris’ work is that he only teaches the tools that he has experience with (you can find those 10 principles in his book noted in Resources). Furthermore, he is admittedly still a work in progress and still uses these tools to keep him living his best, most fulfilling and authentic life. I know you’re going to identify so much with Chris and the stories he’s shared. And it’s my hope that it will help you step into your own super-star authentic self as well.   --      Question Highlights: Would you share what you’re doing now and what was the turning point that got you started? What were some of the things that brought you to what you’re doing now? What was the first level for you of opening up? What was the first thing you needed to move through and how did you see how the tools expanded into other areas? How do you move through issues of self-worth? How did you find your authentic sentence/self and how does someone else find theirs? Where do you borrow faith from, where does it come from and how do you get enough faith and courage to take the first big step and leap? How do you stay connected to your why? What’s making you feel the most abundant right now? What does fun feel like to you? And why is fun productive in your life? How do you tap into compassion without getting completely sucked in or drained?   In This Episode We Talk about: Chris’ childhood as a Jewish American in Puerto Rico The duality of light and dark within all of us Shifting mindset, focus and energy to attract more good Shifting actions to shift results Developing authentic affirmations Determining your why and staying connected to it The importance of having a group of supportive, like-minded friends How Chris creates and uses his vision board How Chris starts every day with meditation/prayers of gratitude Interpreting things in a way that empowers How Chris plans to bring his wisdom to people’s homes And much more…   Quotes:   “I don’t need to make it happen, I can attract it to happen.”   “The power within has the power to really move things in a way you never thought possible.”   “When I honor my purpose, I’m happier.”   “Create a bulletproof belief about yourself based on who you authentically are.”   “The why is the fuel.”   “True freedom is the ability to interpret.”   --   Chris Lee is a transformational facilitator, coach, and TV personality. 30: Everything You've Wanted to Know About LEADERSHIP with Steve Farber

For The Love Of Money

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 19, 2017 59:11

One would never know that the highly successful leadership expert and author, Steve Farber once dreamed of becoming a musician – playing guitar, writing songs – the whole bit.  Those dreams, however, were put to the side when he soon realized that supporting a family and music didn’t mesh well together at the time. So, he gave up the idea of a career in music and began his search for a job. Fortunately, he had a friend who had an investment business and he offered to take him on and show him the ropes. A few successful years later, Steve opened his own company – and found that he had become an entrepreneur. He soon realized though that despite running a thriving business, he hated it. Witnessing people inevitably lose money took a toll on his heart, because he genuinely cared about people – he wanted to help them. Realizing he could do more, he got out. Instead, Steve decided to take his business background, along with his passion for human beings, and combine them to start doing training, facilitation and consulting work. Along the way, Steve also discovered that he was also passionate about leadership. He made it his mission to help people grow into their own extreme leadership. While an expert in the field of leadership, Steve still has his checks and balances when it comes to either speaking at events or other training courses. Years ago, an attendee at one of his events about authenticity questioned if Steve was actually modeling what he was speaking about. That hit him hard. Was he truly speaking from his heart or just doing all the “right” things? Reeling from this comment, he sought out the advice from a mentor, Terry Pierce, and he had some simple but valuable advice. First, you’re never going to connect with everybody. But specifically with the man who questioned Steve’s authenticity, it was important to  “Assume he was right and go from there.” Take a moment to see if there’s some truth. Whatever the answer, know that you can only learn and grow into a better leader. So what makes a great leader? Steve strongly feels that leadership has nothing to do with your position or title. It’s not just about looking out for yourself and stepping on other people as you go. “The greatest leaders are the ones who invest themselves in other people’s success. There’s a generosity of spirit and in what they give.” Not limited to money, this includes sharing time, energy, contacts and so much more. Extreme leaders, as Steve likes to call them, do it because it’s the right thing to do. It’s about implementing a spirit of inclusiveness in addition to the structure of it. You can still have that hierarchy within a company and still function in an inclusive way. Real leaders are committed to changing at least their piece of the world for the better and making radical leaps (not coincidentally the name of one of his books) in love, energy, audacity and proof. As you likely guessed, this isn’t the status quo way of thinking (but Steve and I would love it to be). So what do you do when there’s opposition? What if you’re the minority in a situation? Steve coaches that it’s all about finding your center of gravity. What do you love about the work you’re doing? Where’s your heart in this? Your values?  “If your heart’s not in it, you’re not likely to take a stand.” Whether you’re against the status quo or right alongside it, Steve advises that you must make the decision to LEAD. Keep in mind that it’s OK to say no. It’s perfectly acceptable as long as you’re making the decision consciously and being aware of the “oh shit! moments (OS!M). “If the only reason you’re not doing something is because the idea scares you, that’s the reason to do it.” Let fear be your guide. Sometimes that fear actual means, “I should proceed, not retreat.” Pretty soon, you’ll be seeking out those OS!Ms, and that’s ideal because it means you’re always growing! Because sometimes, “It’s the love that gets us to step up and take action, and the OS!M is often the experience of taking the action.” Steve acknowledges that there are several different types of leaders/entrepreneurs out there and along with that different works styles. Some people work the standard 40+ hours a week and others boast a 4-hour workday. His take on it? “To each their own.” At the end of the day, if you’re creating and accomplishing what YOU intend to do, it doesn’t matter how you do it. On the flip side, however, if you’re not reaching your goals, you may have to adjust. When it comes to “work” in general, be it as an entrepreneur or in corporate America, Steve believes that all of it’s good. Not everyone is wired to be an entrepreneur, just like not everyone is wired to work for someone else. To Steve, the problem lies in the work atmosphere. “We should be changing the nature of what it means to go to work – wherever it is.” Even if it’s mundane work, if you love the people and the company you work for, why shouldn’t it be a joyful experience?  Extending on that point a bit further, Steve firmly believes that it’s not unreasonable to make money, be happy and change the world – simultaneously. “You don’t have to be an ass to make money. You don’t have to sacrifice money for joy. And you don’t have to be a martyr to change the world.”   “Be totally unapologetic for the money you’re making. Be totally unapologetic for the joy your achieving in your life. Be totally unapologetic for how you’re having an impact to change the world for the better.” With words like that, it’s no wonder that Steve has such a generous and giving spirit. His natural impulse is to figure out a way, no matter the situation to help. It’s not to say it always works out, but just the intent ensures that when he needs help, he’ll have a line out the door offering to help. With an unapologetic personality like that, I don’t think I’m alone in thinking, “thank goodness his music career didn’t work out.” In This Episode You Will Learn:  Leadership Authenticity The link between leadership and generosity Entrepreneurship  Resources: FB: facebook.com/stevefarber IG: @stevefarber SteveFarber.com Free audio training series, videos and blogs Extreme Leadership Workshop – Aug. 16, 2017, San Diego stevefarber.com/workshops-training/ Books: The Radical Leap The Radical Edge Greater than Yourself All can be found at stevefarber.com/books/ For more stories and tips on becoming unapologetically wealthy, follow me @Chriswharder on Instagram and check out fortheloveofmoney.com.

Joshua Feuerstein – Episode 26 – What does THIS preacher think about gaining massive wealth? From very humble beginnings and a terrible speech disability, Joshua Feuerstein’s story is not one you want to miss. His experiences and stories are jaw-dropping, and while you may not get why I have a preacher on this podcast, you will by the end as he drops some invaluable social media knowledge bombs that will blow your mind. For those who may not know, Joshua Feuerstein is a viral conservative social media personality, speaker, evangelist and political commentator with over two million daily Facebook followers. His bold perspective, cutting-edge presentation and resonating message have fueled several of his videos to break the coveted 100 million view mark. With between 30-50 million people viewing, reading and interacting with his posts on a weekly basis, he remains one of the leading social media voices in the Christian conservative movement.  But this wasn’t always the case for Joshua. In the early part of his life, he had a terrible stutter. He was bullied and teased (which he’s now thankful for as it gave him some thick skin), but he had a loving home and an especially generous father. His father went out of his way to be kind to others – literally taking groceries from their home (when they had very little to give) to help those who were in need of them more. Witnessing such generosity, at the age of 17, Joshua felt called to give some of his things to a local church as well. After doing so and later attending a service at the church, he had a miraculous encounter with God. His stutter completely disappeared. Nothing gradual about it. It was gone. From this point, things starting looking up for Joshua. At the age of 19, he was speaking at several speaking engagements at churches and other large events. He even had an offer to become an NFL broadcaster. Things were going well, up until five or six years ago though, when his fiancée at the time broke his heart. Suffering from deep depression, it was one of the lowest points of his life, so much so that he pictured himself pulling the trigger on his own life. It was then that he had an epiphany where he recalled God’s story about the five loaves and two fish…while as a whole it couldn’t feed many, by breaking it into pieces it could feed thousands. Similarly, Joshua thought, “God could actually use my broken-ness to bless other people.” And so it began… He started sharing his true, authentic self and the struggles that came along with it. People loved his transparency and as a result several of his videos went viral (some reaching more than 100 million views). Now an in-demand social media consultant, Joshua shares the “secrets” behind creating a viral video and gaining a loyal social media following for your brand. “If you say something that other people agree with, but don’t know how to articulate it, they will share it.”  “If you say something that other people agree with, but they’re afraid to say it – they share it.” Your success is largely dependent on your authenticity. When it comes down to it, you want people to CONNECT with you and everything that you are. So let people see your flaws. “People want to see the real YOU – they don’t want a façade.”  Furthermore, make sure you’re being authentic to YOU and finding the niche around that. Make it something your passionate about. “Find who you are and build a brand around that – and invest in branding yourself.” Know your audience. If you desire to be extremely neutral, you’re not going to develop as loyal of a brand. Joshua admittedly uses a radical approach. Keep in mind that your biggest enemies can be your biggest evangelists… Being as conservative as he is, he’s aware that there’s always going to be some kickback. But to him it’s one of the highest honors. “You’re going to irritate some people. And if you’re not, you’re probably not doing it right.” “Don’t be afraid to tap into your opposition marketing and sometimes let your haters share your stuff, too – or at least talk about it.” And don’t take it personally… The haters don’t necessarily hate you, they just don’t like what you stand for (love that this relates to my last podcast!). So now that you’ve found your audience, how do you keep them? This is one of my favorite parts, because like me, Joshua also feels that generosity is key. He suggests consistently giving people VALUE. Don’t try to monetize your following immediately or they’ll likely end up mistrusting you. “Give people around 80% of your best stuff and then charge them for the last 20%.” Also, be sure to let people see how you’re doing good in the world. This doesn’t mean you need to be boastful and showy, but when you lead by example, you’re also inspiring others to do the same. As a preacher, Joshua believes that wealth can be a great thing. “Money isn’t evil. It’s if you simply love money to the point that it owns you, instead of you owning it.” He also believes in the “sow and reap” concept from the Bible. “If you sow, you reap. Period."  For example, one day at a local coffee shop, he paid for a man’s coffee and Danish. It was a pure act of kindness and one that he enjoyed doing frequently for random individuals. This particular time led to a conversation with the CFO of large company, which later on helped land him a multi-million-dollar contract. “Real generosity has zero stipulations attached.”  When it comes down to it, wealth is only what you make of it. Joshua likes to think of money as just one of the tools we were all provided with to fulfill our purposes here on this earth. But there has to be a purpose behind it… Whether it’s driving a nice car to keep up with the expectations of a wealthy client or buying luxurious watches so you can later give it to someone who needs it for the money, we must always keep it in perspective. “Money does not change you. It only magnifies who you already exist as.”  In This Episode You Will Learn:   How to Grow a Social Media Following Social Media Consulting Generosity and How It Relates to Wealth/Business Giving Entrepreneurship Millionaires Purpose  Resources: FB: @joshua.feuerstein.5 (look for the verified blue checkmark)    For more stories and tips on becoming unapologetically wealthy, follow me @Chriswharder on Instagram and check out fortheloveofmoney.com.
