In this episode, I interviewed Carl Correra, who is an AKC field trial judge and competitor. Last year, I had the honor of watching Carl and his 12 year old GSP, Fancy, participate in the inaugural AKC Master Hunter Excellent test. Fancy tore up the course, was steady as a rock, and had all the participants cheering for her. As someone who has unintentionally been competing with an older dog due to our late start, I've found myself being worried about her age. I think there's a lot of misconception out there about what is possible for a dog who is 10+. Carl and I discuss considerations to keep your older bird dog going strong even as they age.  You can email find Carl on Facebook or send him an email: cvcorrera@yahoo.com.  The Accidental Bird Dog Podcast is sponsored by OnX Hunt and Boss Shotshells. The roles we play in life are no exception. You are always changing. There was a time when your identity was an infant, then a child. Paul shares the many identities that he has had over the years and that he no longer identifies as a drinker.   Identities of some of the largest beer brands in the history of the world are changing seemingly overnight and they are changing their identities for one reason only. That is because you are changing your identity. White Claw now has an AF option, only because enough customers have changed their identities and are beginning to ask for it and that's the only reason why White Claw has this option.   As your identity changes in regard to alcohol, start asking for what your identity craves. Next time you are at a restaurant, ask if they have an AF drink menu or what their options are.   It is 100% okay to change your identity to a non-drinker in a seemingly drunk world.   Athletic Greens   [09:19] Paul introduces Destiny:   Destiny is 29 years old; she is married, and they have a three-year-old son and a German Shorthaired Pointer. For work, Destiny is a nurse where she sees a lot of the damage that alcohol can cause.   Destiny began drinking in her teens and it progressed from there. She worked in the restaurant industry for almost 10 years while attending nursing school. After graduating and starting to work in the ICU, she spent a lot of her time off drinking.   She had her son in May of 2020 and suffered with some postpartum issues. Added to the already stressful ICU, the pandemic was happening, and she got married. Destiny says there was always an excuse to drink, and she often found herself the drunkest person in the room and frequently had blackouts.   Destiny would be able to quit for small stretches of time and would attempt forms of moderation. Her husband would mention that she was drinking too much, and she would deflect and shift some blame on the situations around her that she felt called for drinking.   A rock-bottom moment for Destiny was when she realized that her marriage was beginning to suffer along with all of her goals in life. She says she would have plans that she wanted to but felt like there was a wall that she kept running into. She pictures the wall as alcohol and everything else was on the other side.   Destiny has not gone to AA but says she enjoys reading books, listening to podcasts, and surrounding herself with supportive people who themselves do not drink. She has been spending a lot of time at the gym, she and her husband have started counseling, and she has be going to therapy. When the cravings hit, she plays the tape forward and recalls how things will end if she does decide to drink.   Destiny's best sober moment: playing fetch with her dog and her young son.   Destiny's parting piece of guidance: if you're thinking about it, you should probably do it.   Café RE – promo code OPPORTUNITY waives set up fee. When many of us think about marijuana, our immediate thoughts are of illicit use. But across the world, this attitude is changing as researchers uncover the benefits of medicinal marijuana across a range of conditions.  Progression within Australia has been relatively slow, however our guest this week aims to speed things up in this groundbreaking area.    Dr Michael Mumford started his career as an Australian Army engineer and saw operational service in Afghanistan with the Special Operations Engineer Regiment.  He then studied postgraduate medicine through the army and is now working to increase awareness of the medicinal benefits of cannabinoids, including for the treatment of PTSD in the veteran community.    5:05         About Michael – early years… 5:20         ..and into the Army as an engineer within the Special Operations Engineer Regiment, and then into postgraduate study as a doctor with the Army 14:50       How Michael got interested in the potential of cannabinoids as a treatment protocol (including perspectives from Michael's German Shorthaired Pointer!) 17:35       Given the amount of research supporting its use, why has it taken so long for medicinal marijuana to be accepted within medical applications? 19:05       How does medicinal marijuana differ from what you might buy on the street? 25:55       Current resistance within the medical community 30:30       Michael's research project with the University of Wollongong 35:30       What is the Veteran Access Scheme – and how can people can access it through the Provocatus website 39:50       What's next for Michael – and what he hopes to see in the medicinal marijuana space   www.unforgiving60.com   Email us at debrief@unforgiving60.com   Instagram, Twitter: @Unforgiving60   External Links   Provocatus   Music The Externals – available on Spotify Ben Frichot - available on Spotify

Hunting Dog Confidential

We've been talking about the role of “place” in the history and culture of hunting dog breeds, but not every breed fits neatly within geographical boundaries. There are several breeds in North America who have a foot in two worlds: the parent country (often Germany) as well as North America.   We explore breeds such as the Deutsch Drahthaar, Deutsch Langhaar, and Deutsch Kurzhaar which are known by their German language names in order to differentiate from the German Wirehaired Pointer, German Longhaired Pointer, and German Shorthaired Pointer. Even though the names directly translate, the use of the German name signifies a very specific system and methodology that exists behind the individual dog. Each of these breeds is managed by a U.S.-based chapter of the German parent club, rather than an AKC or NAVHDA-based breed club.   The German clubs, along with their U.S.-based chapters, tie together a dog's performance, health, and conformation into a single system. Before a dog can be bred, it must successfully complete a series of tests and evaluations. The purpose of this system is to ensure that the dogs maintain their consistent form and function, generation after generation. This fits in with the German hunting culture which requires “certified” hunting dogs in the field—in other words, it's based on qualification rather than competition.   So is a Drahthaar the same thing as a GWP? We settle on the answer of “it depends”—at least when it comes to an individual dog. One dog may be the offspring of two Drahthaars but if the parents weren't tested and certified for breeding within the regulations, then the puppies can't be considered Drahthaars…even if the genetics are the same. But if this continues for five, ten, or twenty generations, at which point do enough differences creep in that they could be considered different breeds altogether? So rather than studying any one individual dog, it's more productive to look at the GWP vs. DD discussion at the larger population level. In that case, they are not the same thing, since the breeds are managed in entirely different manners.   Is a German-bred dog right for you? Again, it depends. Jennifer talks about what drew her to the Deutsch Langhaar club, ultimately causing her to jump in feet first. But as with anything else, it's a matter of personal preference. If the idea of a standardized system with strict protocols resonates with you, then it could be a great fit. On the other hand, if you bristle at the idea of being governed by a strict system, then it likely won't be a good fit for you. Craig talks about the importance of evaluating the culture around a breed before deciding if it's the right breed for you.       Don't forget to rate, review, subscribe, and share this podcast!   Share | Comment, review and discuss this episode of the podcast in our Project Upland Community Facebook group.   Hunting Dog Confidential is presented by Eukanuba Premium Performance Dog Food and supported by Syren USA and Kent Cartridge.

Hunting Dog Confidential

Up until the late nineteenth century, the use and breeding of hunting dogs in North America was rather chaotic. Dogs were used in a variety of different ways, whether it was market hunters using Setters to retrieve waterfowl or big game hunters using Pointers to track and hold wounded elk at bay. There was no consistency in the breeding, either, as different types of dogs were often mixed and matched at will.   Before long, though, some of the same concepts from the industrial revolution found their way into dog fancy. In order to achieve consistent results, fanciers knew they needed to apply a consistent technique along with a form of quality control. Registries were formed, pedigrees were issued, and dogs were judged according to newly established standards. The result was consistency in breeding and a standardized form and function for the dogs.   While hunting was still an everyman's activity, dog enthusiasts knew that they needed “men of means” in order for dog breeding to really gain momentum. Before long, success in the show ring and in field trials was accompanied by increased social standing. This increased attention—and financial backing—was exactly what hunting dogs needed to reach their golden age.   Pointers and Setters were the first breeds to become established in North America, but imported dogs from Europe soon followed. The “Russian Setter” (likely a Wirehared Pointing Griffon) was an early arrival, followed soon after by the Brittany, German Shorthaired Pointer, and the Labrador. We discuss some theories on why—with the exception of the Griffon—those early imported breeds went on to become some of the most popular hunting dogs in North America today.   We end the episode right around the end of the second World War, when returning servicemen and women were bringing new German hunting dog breeds back home to North America. The economic boom and the growth of the middle class fueled an explosion in popularity for many of these dog breeds. For some dogs, popularity was both a blessing and a curse. Stay tuned for the next episode where we discuss some of these examples.   Enjoy the show and don't forget to rate, review, subscribe, and share this podcast.   Share | Comment, review and discuss this episode of the podcast in our Project Upland Community Facebook group.   Hunting Dog Confidential is presented by Eukanuba Premium Performance Dog Food and supported by Syren USA and Kent Cartridge.

About our guest: Hello, my name is K.C. and I am the Owner of Fur Baby Comfort & Care, a professional pet sitting business that prides itself on providing peace of mind to Fur Baby owners! As a graduate of Oakland University with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and concentration in Childhood Development, my early passions have led me to a new and exciting path: opening Fur Baby Comfort & Care. The pet care industry has been an exciting new venture as being a pet parent myself has opened my eyes to how important having quality pet care is whether you're working long hours or out of town. I've experienced the non-responsiveness from a hobby pet sitter and of course the worry that goes along with wondering if your pet is truly okay in another's care. After too many times experiencing uncertainty while away, I knew that I needed to transform this space and provide peace of mind to not only myself, but the plenty of other families in Southeast Michigan who were undoubtedly experiencing the same misgivings. From the outside looking in, many may think it's just dog walks and the expected feeding or two, but my team and I know that for the families we service it's so much more! We are dedicated to servicing all types of animals from dogs who have issues with socialization, temperament or medical problems to families who have a full farm of animals to tend to and more. Furthermore, we seek to provide connection to the animals in our care to ensure they feel safe even when the owner is not present. The inner-workings and family dynamics that owners have with their pets are so important to learn in order to stay on the same page with communication and training techniques. At Fur Baby Comfort & Care, we pride ourselves on always going the extra mile to make sure all parties are comfortable with the care being provided. When I'm not tending to our Fur Baby clients, you can find me going on walks with Chloe, my German Shorthaired Pointer, or snuggling up on the couch with a good book and Nugget, my rescue cat. I also enjoy riding my Peloton and spending time with my two nieces and nephew! Julie Christie dispels that notion with thought-provoking, actionable tips to align your photography marketing and business processes with your own heart and personality.Introduction (2:25)How do you realize your worth as a photographer? (4:15)I don't like the saying “Charge what you're worth”. Attaching your photography price to your self worth can be messy. The work we do is not priceless – it has a value, and it can change over time. Dig really deep into your money blocks, understand them, then put time in to minimize them. How to price yourself profitably right from the start? (10:40)Understand positioning – what it is about you or your brand that is a deal clincher for your ideal client? If you can think how you are better, it will help you psychologically put a good price on it. Also remember that it's not about price – it's about profit. You can charge a low price, but then don't give away too much. What are the 3 biggest photography marketing tips that you can implement right away? (21:11)1. Nurture the relationships you already have. Give your clients an amazing customer experience.2. Have and use an email list3. Create and use key contentHow do you make the business side of photography enjoyable? (30:42)It happens when you create a business that aligns completely with your personality. When you start out, take a few personality tests and become really self-aware, and then build a business for YOUR personality.Where do you start creating a photography marketing campaign? (34:48)People will need to go on a journey and have touch points with you before they book you, so visibility is so important, and campaigns will give that buzz around your business. On this episode of the Good Dog Pod, our host Laura Reeves is in Boise, Idaho at the German Shorthaired Pointer Club of American National Specialty. The scope of the episode is to talk about the German Shorthaired Pointers as pets, companions, showdogs, hunting dogs and more. Char, Bob, and Dave, our guests, all have immense experience with Shorthairs - over 30 years! What's it like to live with a shorthair? Shorthairs are described as energetic and athletic, they have high drive and are stubborn. They are full muscle, which is a good thing if you have room to burn that energy off. Once that energy is burned off (every day, not just on the weekends), they make as good of a couch potato as any dog.  Dock diving, scent work and agility are popular activities to vent off the energy that Shorthairs have. The breed is designed for ultimate versatility - they are not only hunting dogs - you just have to give it a job.  Char notes that they are an extremely people-oriented breed - it is the breed's temperament and personality that hooked our three guests who are sitting in on this podcast.  What is it like to go hunting with a Shorthair? It can be exciting and frustrating. They are a people-oriented dog and they want to please you - and as a hunting dog they will work with you. Being out in the field with a Shorthair is a beautiful thing, comments Char.  Health Requirements and Issues in the breed? When you are looking for a puppy, the first thing you should do is look at what the AKC has done with the GSPCA and OFA (CHIC Program), which are the minimal health testing requirements recommended by the Breed Club.  One problem in the breed is that Shorthairs have a reputation of being relatively clear of serious health issues. However, we have seen epilepsy pop up in the breed as well as cancers, cardiomyopathy and heart murmurs, among others.  Laura concludes the episode by asking our guests what the very, very best thing about a German Shorthaired Pointer is. What is it that makes them incredible? Check out the episode to find out what our guests said!
