Urban highways are ubiquitous in pretty much every city across America. They cut through neighborhoods, make navigation challenging, decrease property values, and bring exhaust and noise into our communities. But they also help people move quickly from one end of the city to the other, which is why they were built in so many cities, especially during the suburban boom of the 20th century, when they helped people travel from jobs in the city to homes in the suburbs. Today, there's a movement to stop building and expanding these highways, and Strong Towns is a leading voice in that fight. There's also a movement to try to undo the harm that they've already caused and remove them—or parts of them—altogether. The Treme neighborhood of New Orleans has been home to one such highway for decades: the Claiborne expressway. Treme is an active, culturally rich community near the heart of the city, but it's been harmed by the dust, noise, disruption, pollution, crime, and economic disinvestment that resulted from this highway cutting through the neighborhood. Amy Stelly, whose family has been in Treme for decades, is helping lead a fight to remove that highway for good. She's an urban planner and artist who knows what the neighborhood was like before this highway and sees how its removal could help local businesses thrive, help more residents invest in their homes, and make Treme a safer, more enjoyable place to live and spend time—not just a place to speed through quickly. To help fellow residents see that potential and push for that change, she's led community gatherings, activism, and poster campaigns to show what Treme could be without the highway. On this episode of The Bottom-Up Revolution podcast, she shares a wealth of candid insights about the need for highway removal and the process to make it happen. Louis Bromfield planted seeds of the food revolution and reminds us to "Never forget that agriculture is the oldest of the honorable professions and that always the good farmer is the fundamental citizen of any community, state or nation." We are reintroduced to the wisdom and vision of Louis Bromfield in the recently published book, "The Planter of Modern Life" by the author Stephen Heyman. He was introduced to the Bromfield books of nearly 75 years ago by Pennsylvania grass farmers, John and Sukey Jamison who had themselves been inspired by Bromfield's Malabar Farm. John and Sukey share how Bromfields vision helped them get started when neither had any farming experience. Regenerative farming leader, Rich Collins, has been a self described Bromfield 'Groupie' for years and has visited Bromfields place outside of Paris and Malabar Farms in Ohio. He also has shared Bromfield books and introduced us to the author of the next Bromfield book, Annaliese Abbott. Rich, Annaliese and the Jamison's join the table to discuss the life and lessons of Louis Bromfield. In addition to recommending The Planter of Modern Life, Rich Collins shared the following. "Most all of these folks focused on the important role of soil as a key element of the water cycle. As Hugh Bennet wrote back in the mid 30's "Keep the raindrop where it falls." So simple!! We first heard about the Long Island CW Club back in the fall of 2018. After talking with the club’s founders, Howard Bernstein, WB2UZE and Rich Collins, K2UPS, we featured the club in Episode #23 in January 2019. The club (actually it’s a community of CW operators) is so unique and different in their approach to teaching Morse code and CW we thought we’d check in a year or so later to see what they’ve been up to. In this follow-up episode, we welcome back Howard Bernstein, WB2UZE and two of the club’s former students, Jim Crites, W6JIM and Stan Ferris, K7SBF, who are now teaching Morse code and CW to new club students. The club has grown tremendously in the past year and now offers some of the most unique and interesting CW courses not offered anywhere else. Join us as Howard, Jim, and Stan update us on all that’s been happening with the Long Island CW Club!
Episode #18: Rich Collins - Mover Rich - Imagination Movers Video Version: https://youtu.be/H2ImbTKr9jM We think that this situation could use a little IMAGINATION!!! Chris and Sarah are joined by Rich Collins, aka Mover Rich. Rich is a member of THE IMAGINATION MOVERS, a Children's Alternative Rock Band formed in New Orleans, Louisiana in 2003. The IMAGINATION MOVERS are made up of 4 friends: Rich Collins, Scott "Smitty" Smith, Scott Durbin and Dave Poche. When they tour they are often joined by Kyle Melancon on drums and percussion. The IMAGINATION MOVERS also had a Children's show on Playhouse Disney / Disney Junior that aired over 3 seasons from 2008-2013 and is NOW AVAILABLE on Disney+!!! Chris and Sarah actually had the pleasure of seeing the Movers live at the Topsfield Fair a few years ago and they were AMAZING, mixing kid friendly cover songs in with their children's songs played on REAL INSTRUMENTS no NO BACKING TRACKS to create a family-friendly concert experience that is just as fun for the adults as it is with the kids. https://www.imaginationmovers.com/ https://whatsondisneyplus.com/tvshow/imagination-movers/ https://www.facebook.com/imaginationmovers/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3v0dNz5uZjPOBjyLhuStaw @iMovers Being new parents (and children of the 80's and 90's), we are faced with the responsibility of passing on the great movies, TV shows, games, toys and other experiences of our formative years to our children. In our second Happy Hour by Zoom we manage to take advantage of not being able to hang out in a bar and instead talk to people all across the country in a new concept we’re calling Covideo. Yes, that’s in questionable taste, but after all it is Happy Hour. Mike Rubin is stuck in his second week of isolation in San Francisco. When times are normal Mike has a photography business called Neomodern, in which people walk into his photo gallery with their phones filled with photos and with the assistance of experts walk out with a framed print on archival quality paper. It’s a brilliant idea that has been around for 3 years but Mike’s dilemma is, does he hang on and hope the world returns to how it was, or does he embrace change and morph into something different? He’s at this point heading along the latter avenue. Katrina Brees is sitting on a possible Covid-driven windfall. Not only did her 10 year old movie about her Vagina from the Future who cures a Chinese-born virus predict this whole current scenario, but she has long been in the funeral and casket business. Katrina’s Fantastic Casket business is fundamentally a DIY coffin, though now she is moving into a whole new arena of disposing of dead bodies which involves melting flesh and crushing bones. In case you think this is a piece of mis-reporting or exaggerated in some way, take a listen to this conversation. Rich Collins had a great year lined up which included an Asian tour and a solo spot at Jazz Fest. Well, that’s all changed. However, he still has a trove of great new songs, one of which he plays on this show, about the pleasures of driving around aimlessly and cranking up the radio. Hopefully those days will return in the not too distant future. Andrew Duhon gets his cable fixed in the middle of this show, just in time to play an almost acapella song. Photos from this show by Jill Lafleur are on our website https://itsneworleans.com/2020/03/25/covideo/
Richard Collins is the owner of California Endive Farms, a farming operation that specializes in growing endive, a vegetable of the chicory family that is so special, it’s grown twice. Due to the strict conditions and labor-intensive manner of growing it, the endive was deemed a rare crop to produce. However, Rich took advantage of this fact and decided to niche down and focus on building a farming business around it. Today, California Endive Farms is still the largest American endive grower. Rich joins us to share the story of how he learned about the endive plant and what made him decide to grow such a complicated crop. He explains what endives are, why they’re difficult to grow, and the market potential it has. He describes the various factors they have to consider and how they manage to control them on their farm. Rich also shares why there’s hardly any competition for them when it comes to growing endive. “There's a huge window of opportunity for us to grow crops in a much more rational manner with respect to soil and water resources.” - Rich Collins This Week on The Future of Agriculture Podcast: Rich’s journey in the ag industry and the people who influenced his business decisions. What endive is, why it needs to grow in the absence of light, and the difficulty in farming it. What the market is like for endive, its uses, and its health benefits. How marketable is it growing endive as a primary source of income? The factors that influence endive growth and the conditions they control. Finding a niche like endive farming today compared to what it was like decades ago. The competition for endive growing and why they hardly have competition. A few years ago Sacramento declared itself to be the Farm to Fork Capitol. It was a bold claim that was immediately challenged by other communities who felt that they deserved to be the “Capitol”. Some jumped on Social media to say “Oh yeah. We’re just as good or better.” Well, let the competition begin because everybody wins if cities all over strive to be outstanding in this field. To shed light on the reasons, methods and results of becoming a leader in Farm To Fork we gather during the Sacramento Farm To Fork Festival Week at one of the leading Farm To Fork restaurants, Mulvaney’s B&L with an enthusiastic audience, BanjoFiddle music, food, wine and an outstanding panel including: Rich Collins, Farmer, Founder of CA Endives, Past Chairman of CA Alliance With Family Farms; Allyson Harvie, Chef de Cuisine at Ella Dining Room, Bridge Dinner Chef; Santana Diaz, Executive Chef, Food and Nutrition Services UC Davis Health; and Bobbin Mulvaney, Co Owner/Chef of Mulvaney’s B&L. A lively conversation and questions from a well informed audience ensued on becoming and living the Farm To Fork Lifestyle that is Sacramento today. www.farmtoforkcaptiol.com
The Long Island CW Club and their online morse code classes are the topics on Ham Talk Live! this week. Howard Bernstein, WB2UZE and Rich Collins, K2UPS, the founders of the club, are here to take your calls LIVE!Be sure to CALL in with your questions and comments by calling 812-638-4261 live during the call-in segment of the show. You can also tweet your questions before or during the show to @HamTalkLive.
Many HAM operators never had the benefit of an Elmer. Most of us figured it out, but there were other times, like the time we were wondering why nobody ever answered our CQs because we didn’t know our code sending was so atrocious. It would have been nice to have someone sit next to us and show us how to send better code… Howard Bernstein, WB2UZE and Rich Collins, K2UPS - the New Elmers - are changing that with the Long Island CW Club. Their method of teaching Morse code and CW is casual and fun. It is a unique experience that has already appealed to more than a hundred students wanting a less structured and more relaxed approach to learning the code. In this episode, Howard and Rich explain how the club got started, their unique way of teaching, and the classes available to anyone wanting to learn the code and have fun.
A lot happening on the podcast today... News Product Review Deeper Sonar Pescadamy Awards Gross Bait Contest Update Patreon First up the News, you will hear lots of background noise in this because it was recorded in a coffee shop... so fun How about a product Review I was sent a Deeper Sonar www.deeper.com to test out and here is what it is and what I think. First a big thanks to deeper for sending it. Now a description Troll, map, scan and catch with the Deeper Smart Sonar PRO, then use it as an ice flasher in winter. This versatile, powerful fish finder scans down to 260 ft / 80 m, using its rock solid Wi-Fi connection to send detailed sonar data direct to your smartphone or tablet. Mark fish, locate structure and features, map out any water from your kayak or boat, and start fishing smarter with the Deeper PRO. SO Here is what you get, a cool looking black ball... and a few cables for charging... It charges up quickly and is ready to go. You will need to download the free deeper app for your smartphone. I was using it on an iPhone 6. Full disclosure. I got this in the beginning of the summer, but Rich Collins our Fly Fishing correspondent got one last winter, so I have used it before. Let’s talk about first impressions in open water. As soon as I linked it to my phone and tossed it in the water it started working. I was super impressed with how easy the screen was to read and I actually found it easier to use than the super expensive lowrance system I have on my pontoon boat. So that’s a total win. I was able to see structure, mark fish and easily figure out how to catch fish. So pretty great. I know a lot of guys who use these in their kayaks and love it. Last year on the ice was the first time I really used this.. And it has flasher setting so it’s great for vertical jigging. Works well and eliminates the need for a super expensive flasher. Not bad for something that retails for around $200 We caught a lot of fish using it. Now the downside... and this is not the fault of deeper. Iphones hate the cold. So you have a very limited window of fishing when it’s extremely cold out. Iphones just shut down. So use them on warmer days, inside your ice shack or have your phone plugged into external power while running this. Another trick you could try is sticking hand warmer packs to the back of your phone case. I have not tried this on an android device and would be interesting in hearing other’s feedback. Overall I like the deeper sonar and think it’s a cool gadget for the money especially great for kayak anglers and ice fishers. Rich Collins was a 4 year old in the city when first he knew that he wanted to be a farmer when he grew up. Now on a farm he calls "Journey's End" he can look back at productive years of farming, then a vegetable that he learned about as a dishwasher before tracking it to France; and then to look ahead to helping small scale farmers compete and realize their own dreams as he has realized many of his own. Rich talks about his journey and why he believes he's a approaching "Journey's End" while he puts more irons in the fire establishing his new farm home and rolling up his sleeves to help farmer organizations, Community Alliance with Family Farmers and the Farmer Guild meld in to one. We could argue that it's not an "end" but we can't argue that it's a worthy journey we share in the table talk,

This episode is brought to you by our friends at NH Outdoor Learning Center, they offer tons of great outdoor certifications and I went to guide school with them. Scott Jackson really understands this business and without his help I would have had no chance of becoming a fishing guide. We originally were going to make this a simple four part series, but as I dig into this material and grow the business I am finding that it’s much more difficult than I could have imagined. Upcoming ideas for future episodes in this series, the expenses of guiding, becoming a pro-staff, sponsorship, marketing and the one that surprised me most, the Politics of guiding. First up my first trip I arrived to the fishing spot a half hour before my client. People were in the spot of my first choice, so I moved to plan B. It was January 1 so by law I could not pre-fish the area, in addition, my snowmobile broke down the day before so it was going to be a walk-on ice fishing trip. Did I mention I hate silver lake? My client arrived on time and was super excited to fish, so we headed out. There was nobody else in the area I chose, I chose the spot for two reasons, 1- Easy Parking and 2 5 years ago I saw a trout on an underwater camera, my hopes were not high and I informed my client we were not going to catch much, did I mention I hate silver lake? Here is Mike’s first impression Confidence grows with experience, we took a break to collect more audio, after this my equipment froze so I had to stop recording. All in all it was a good day, I counted 9 lakers for Mike and a few for myself, Mike called in to recap. BTW I can’t begin to thank Mike Enough, it means a lot to me that he wanted to be my first client. With my confidence High, Fish Nerds fly fishing correspondent and my friend Rich Collins came out with me. Rich is my banana, he’s full of bad luck, so we chatted while my recording equipment failed... the buzzing noise you hear in the background is my fish finder. Recently we had some protesters or I should say protester, you’ll hear my Father-in Law Scott call in to talk about our protestor. Then our recording equipment failed, you will hear more from RIch in the future. Part of being a guide is doing fishing seminars, I have been doing these for years (since 2011) so I did one for the Conway Public Library, Vinnie Joined me, once he is licensed he will be my partner in the Guide Service. We won’t make you listen to the whole thing. I booked 2 trips from the seminar, 18 people attended and the feedback we got was positive except for one. Someone said the children were distracting (My kids!) I got a call from Dave Wilson, who is has invented a new device call the Pocket Rod Res, he asked to meet me at a coffee shop to show off his new invention. https://pocketrodrest.com/ I have a handful on these Pocket Rod Rest to give away. Here’s how you can get one. I need to know what Annoys you most about other fisherpeople, what’s your fishy pet-peeve, leave that on my voicemail and I will send the first 8 people who call in a Pocket Rod Rest and some FN Decals. 607-378-FISH

When you had a vasectomy at age 30 via a doctor who apparently decided it wasn t a moment too soon to remove you from the gene pool , then fall in love with a woman who s determined to have a baby, the solution is obvious a sperm donation from your gay best friend and shared parenthood with donor dad and his partner. Andy Overslaugh tells Happy Hour about son WIlder s three dads, Wilder s mom Lori and her Leap Day proposal, and their surprisingly unsurprising, unconventional family. Although he says he s best known as Lori Tipton s fianc , Andy is what Happy Hour guest host Rich Collins calls a "five in one" threat. What else do you call a 20 year bartender whose incarnations include indie professional wrestler, Katrina race car driver, standup bass smashing leader of a 90s rockabilly band, and one of Wilder s dads Don t miss his tip for men who want to hang out at Victoria s Secret without creeping out the clientele. Andy s most vivid stories describe the wild world of professional wrestling, complete with hidden razors, gushing blood and a nemesis called Dick Nasty, so you might be surprised to know he s a big fan of Renaissance festival jousting. Speaking of which, Happy Hour favorite George Elizondo recounts the time he played at a Renaissance festival...with a Motown band...to an audience of no one. At least he got to eat a big turkey leg when it was over. George s copy music for the sponsorship announcements chills out the house. When she realizes a missing guest has resulted in a show reeking of testosterone, Happy Hour producer Graham da Ponte steps in to provide some estrogen...and is promptly reduced to tears by Rich s devastating song about New Orleans s mean streets. Finally, Andrew Duhon makes his last Happy Hour appearance of the month before heading for an east coast tour find his dates for a club near you at AndrewDuhon.com. Rich Collins of the Imagination Movers, guest hosting for Grant, keeps things moving with some stories of his own including the tender tale of a 10 year underpants ritual and some seriously grownup music. It's a childhood music memory from Rich Collins, a founder and front man for one of the most popular children's music groups in the world, the Imagination Movers. Rich also has a burgeoning solo career, with a new album of songs geared toward adults. In this music memory, Rich talks about the music he associates with large family gatherings at Thanksgiving: “My family up in DC was large and we would all gather for all the major holidays, and the holiday that was at our house every year was Thanksgiving. And we had a very fun family, so basically the way every one of these gatherings ended was with all the tables and chairs being pushed aside, and we would put on records and start dancing.” Rich talks about how his father curated the albums that became the basis for Thanksgiving memories: “The soundtrack to my youth, and to these parties, and to these great family memories, was the Beatles, Creedence, and Otis Redding.” Today, the tradition lives on for Rich and his family. "Every other year here in New Orleans (where I’ve been for 25 years), I host Thanksgiving. And I have a Pandora channel with those three artists on it and I put it on and it’s playing the whole time that I’m gathered with my sisters and my mom and the next generation…” Thanks, Rich, for sharing this wonderful family tradition with Confetti Park. Listen to this extended interview with Rich Collins, all about the music of the Imagination Movers.
We all know Rich Collins, from his career with Imagination Movers, but we ll now also know him as the host of this weeks Happy Hour. Rich is a grizzled veteran of Happy Hour so he knows the how hairy it can get, so he s brought fellow Happy Hour alum and fellow amazing musician Mikayla. Brandi Studer also returns to talk about the dire lack of public defenders in the city of New Orleans. She also talks about the people who need these public defenders, as well as access to restrooms. We ve also have got a new comer, Preston Titus is from Dallas but he came to New Orleans just in time for Katrina. Fortunately that wasn t enough to scare him away, and he s the head honcho at Belle s Diner, home of the Belle Boozy, Preston s milkshake based cocktail creation. Gwen Thompkins is host of the authoritative and quintessential New Orleans music show, Music Inside Out, on NPR station WWNO. Gwen s tenure in Sudan and East Africa as cash toting bureau chief in that neck of the woods has given her a wide worldview out of which has come her solution to the debate over guns in America pies. What if, instead of shooting each other, we each had an armory of pies which we unload on each other with an accompaniment of suitable epithets John Richie is taking the pie idea under advisement. His new documentary is called 91 for the 91 of the population who believe in background checks for all gun buyers and examines why 100 of Congress refuse to act on the will of the people. Rich Collins is side tepping the gun issue in favor of a more upbeat and sunny view of the world on his new record, Golden Pick. He also has a new oputlook on the music busines and a full schedule with the other side of his music life, the Imagination Movers. If we ever get to Mars, man s journey will begin in New Orleans East. Cindy Manto s fascinating new book, imaginatively titled Michoud Assembly Facility, tells the story of the piece of dirt off of the I 10 that started off as a land grant from Louis XV of France. In the 1940 s Michoud was the site of the world s largest factory, building planes, then tanks, then in the 70 s they started building a whole different kind of tank the external tank for NASA s space shuttle and today the Michoud Assembly Facility is building the MPCV Multi Purpose Crew Vehicle that will take us to Mars. Is there Mozarella on Mars If Chef Kevin White goes up in Cindy s MPCV there will be Chef Kevin makes his own every day at Wayfare, and drizzles home made blood orange oil over it. Like Cindy, Michael Harold is writing about whole other worlds. Having recently turned his back on 23 years of wrestling Mesolthelioma victims as an asbestos attorney, Michael is, among other pursuits, a columnist for recently launched Inside New Orleans magazine where he is chornicling the doings of the rich and nefarious. Now that Michael has no schedule he doesn t need to get changed out of his running shorts or show up any place on time. Rich Collins is resurrecting his smash hit Disney TV series Imagination Movers as an animated series in which the Movers develop super powers. On this show we get to help Rich write the new theme tune to the show, and preview a slice of the other side of Rich s life, a cut from his upcoming solo record "A Particular Set of Skills." Andrew Duhon, back from wandering the Western edge of America, laments the lack of heart and soul in Nashville and beyond and puts his heart and soul where his mouth is with a beautiful rendition of a new song about impermanence and a pocket full of rocks.
