News: This weekend at South by Southwest, Disney had a panel called “The Future of World-Building at Disney” which gave us a ton of information about upcoming theme park attractions. One of these was the updated experience coming next year to Millennium Falcon: Smuggler's Run. The new adventure will feature the Mandalorian and Grogu, better known as “the child” from the hit Disney+ series. This new experience will take guests to new locations for the attraction, like Cloud City, Tatooine, and the Death Star wreckage. The update will coincide with the premiere of “The Mandalorian and Grogu” movie on May 22, 2026. – https://disneyparksblog.com/disney-experiences/sxsw-2025-new-missions-smugglers-run-mandalorian/ https://www.micechat.com/410722-disney-parks-announcements-from-swsx-avengers-star-wars-a-tomorrowland-tease/ Also at South by Southwest, Disney gave new details on the Avengers Campus updates at Disneyland. The large e-ticket Avengers Infinity Defense didn't get much new information, but the Stark Flight Lab did! Robert Downey Jr., who plays Tony Stark and Iron Man, was present to talk about the upcoming attraction. The attraction will have guests in “gyro-kinetic pods” that will roll on a track before being attached to a giant robotic arm and taken through some high-speed maneuvers. What joke is present in Disneyland Paris's Big Thunder that most guests don't notice? We've come to the end of our epic 20-episode series featuring Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, but we have time for one final ride on a runaway train as we hop aboard the best version of this attraction in Disneyland Paris. As promised, Kirk packs us some miner's lunches before we talk about a mistake Tony Baxter fixed, some lost Audio Animatronic miners, a piece of mining equipment that surprises us by being in all four versions, and a possum's anatomically impossible actions. We also hear a bizarre poem about beans, speculate on the meaning of some mining tools, and explain some foreshadowing elements that many overlook. We end this series looking back on some of our favorite moments and takeaways and feel a little sad to watch the train pull into the station after such a wild ride in the wilderness. What makes Disneyland Paris's Frontierland the BEST version of all Disney parks? In this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk, we arrive at the "crown jewel" of all the Big Thunder Mountain Railroads in our series, the one that graces an island in Disneyland Paris. But in order to understand what makes this mountain the best version that Tony Baxter and the Imagineering team ever created, we have to first understand the context of Disneyland Paris's Frontierland as a whole. As we dig into the concepts and backstories that made this unique land magnificent, we also uncover some unusual movie connections, strange foreshadowing signs, secret tributes, and a few throwbacks to Disney's rich history. We also discover why barns are red, how the O.K. Corral got its name, and why priceless art was removed from one of the restaurants. Kate accidentally says some embarrassing turns of phrase, Kirk talks about edible gold nuggets and we both get excited over some old dinosaur bones. How many ideas for Big Thunder Mountain are simply recycled old ones? In this episode of Distory, we keep chugging along in our Big Thunder Mountain series as we start by saying goodbye to Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland (but not before we learn a few lost concepts in an attempt to save it, some of which we see today in the current Big Thunder). After tearing down Cascade Peak and mentioning where a few of the animals made a new home, we hop over to Walt Disney World to learn about the largest never-built show structure in Disney's history, Thunder Mesa. After some twists and turns on a (boring?) version of a runaway mine train, we roll to a stop as Tony Baxter takes the reins from Marc Davis and sketches the first concepts for the Big Thunder we know it today (well, before it was shelved and then built elsewhere). We take a rabbit trail to Pirates to debate what park wears it best, and Kirk derails Kate's transitions as he recovers from climbing Everest on the Swiss Family Treehouse. Why was Tony Baxter so disappointed in Alice in Wonderland as a child? In this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk, we say farewell to our Alice in Wonderland series (and make it go out with a bang!). After learning what delayed Alice from opening with New Fantasyland in 1983, we compare the enhancements with the original 1958 version, hear about Tony Baxter's vision for the updates, discover a ridiculous reason for a tree, and find a long-lost Alice figurine from Walt Disney World. She talks about how long the Queue line was, seeing Tony Baxter as he collected is souvenir water, and some of the other things she did during this visit. I learned that Disneyland's ride system for Splash is much different than the Walt Disney World version. It will be interesting to see how these will differ with the retheming taking place. And, as we discussed, there are no date given for the opening of Tiana's Bayou Adventure in either park. We want to thank you for streaming or downloading Disney Conversations! Please share us with your friends and family! We would love to know what you want to hear about on our show, so please chime in on the Disney Conversations Podcast Facebook Page, or email us at disneyconversations@outlook.com! Of all the Tomorrowlands in all the Magic Kingdom-style parks, there is no version more unique than the one in Disneyland Paris, whose title is not Tomorrowland but Discoveryland. Intended to celebrate the scientists and futurists of Europe, the look and feel of this land really stands out above the rest. If steampunk had a theme park, much of this land would serve as home to it. We'll visit the attractions, shops and restaurants of this section of the park as we continue our celebration and examination of the many lands of Disneyland Paris. We'll look at how some of this original design dates back to early attractions Tony Baxter once conceived for Disneyland. And we'll explore some rumors of new attractions that might be coming to this land. Join us in Discoveryland as we go to the past to explore the future.
No. 49: Journey Into Imagination; David Koenig from July 28, 2014 Contact us at comments@mousetalgia.com. David Koenig offers a look behind the scenes at the process of writing the best "behind the scenes" Disney parks books! From surprising anecdotes to the massive undertaking of documenting Walt Disney World's history, Koenig discusses his various books and his opinions about successful attractions, cast member secrets, and the art of bringing fantasy to life. Koenig talks about Universal's impact on the Disney parks, dealing with Disney's legal arm, and how pulling back the curtain on Disney park operations can make fans love the parks even more. Also, Mousetalgia goes back to Walt Disney World again as Dave, Becky and Kristen discuss a special fundraiser featuring Tony Baxter discussing Journey Into Imagination, the beloved extinct attraction from EPCOT Center. Tony talks about the original proposed EPCOT architecture, the origins of the attraction, and the unlikely genesis of Figment! Plus, our favorite Disney summer songs - and more!
This weekend Splash Mountain ended at Walt Disney World after more than 30 years of operation. Soon Disneyland, which built the first Splash Mountain, will close as well. While there may be controversy of its replacement, there is no question, this attraction was a brilliant Imagineering masterpiece. Led by designers like Tony Baxter and Bruce Gordon, this attraction did what no other ride or attraction could do--especially for Disneyland and later for Walt Disney World and Tokyo Disneyland. We not only explore the brilliance of this attraction, but celebrate it for what it accomplished. While there is much good regarding the advent of Tiana's Bayou Adventure, there will never be anything like the innovation that is Disney's Splash Mountain. This podcast is dedicated to celebrating this Imagineering masterpiece.
In the 1980s, the Imagineers at WED completely redesigned Fantasyland. But was it made into what Walt always wanted, or is there more to the story? In this episode of Distory, we travel back in time to explore the origins of the dark ride before discussing Tony Baxter's perspective of the Fantasyland remodel and sharing details from historic internal WED work documents regarding Pinocchio's design and story. We also wax philosophical about the themes in Pinocchio and have a lively debate, which Kirk *probably* wins. Join us LIVE on TikTok every Friday at 5:30pm Pacific/8:30pm Eastern for more Distory! How many people can say their childhood dreams came true? Tony Baxter can. He fell in love with Disneyland as a boy (building a perfect replica of Sleeping Beauty's castle) and wound up as an Imagineer, creating world-famous attractions for “the happiest place on earth.” From Thunder Mountain to Star Tours, he has left his fingerprints in so many places, beginning in Anaheim and culminating in his favorite, Disneyland Paris. Leonard and Jessie have counted Tony as a friend for many years but this is the first time they've recorded his thoughts and memories

WDW Radio # 605 - The Original Dreamfinder, Ron Schneider As we celebrated Walt Disney World's 49th birthday on October 1, I wanted to look back at not just one of the resort's most popular attractions, but characters as well. The Dreamfinder (and good right arm, Figment) were created for the new Journey Into Imagination attraction in Epcot in 1983, and ushered in a sense of wonder and fun the likes of which the park had never seen before. And helping to create that spark of imagination was Ron Schneider, the original Dreamfinder. Ron joined me live in Magic Kingdom for the anniversary, and shares stories that paint a colorful picture tracing the origins of the attraction and character, as well as his years in the parks, to working with Tony Baxter, and the day that Michael Jackson asked to meet Dreamfinder. We also discuss the future of the attraction, characters, and EPCOT, Walt, and so much more.
Today's unfocused episode involves Danny trying to tell Molly about the history of EPCOT's Journey Into Imagination. It detours into Chuck E. Cheese stories, lousy Batman episodes, and Promos for the WB network. There's tangents, detours, and a lot of Tony Baxter talk. It's a wild ride (although Mr. Toad's Wild Ride will be a different episode).
