Exploring the history of the Disney Parks (with a dash of the ridiculous!), Distory with Kate and Kirk is an adventure into the fascinatingly obscure details that have made the Disney parks what they are today.

Creepy clues are hiding in the landscaping of the Tower of Terror's exterior queue…. but only if you know what to look for. Drop in with us to the Hollywood Tower Hotel as we step into the queue of this iconic Disney attraction and explore the Imagineering details most guests miss while waiting in line for the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. In this episode of Distory, Kirk takes us on a tour of the landscaping design, identifying plants and their significance to the story being told. Kate explains some antiquated terminology on signs, we try to make sense of something that doesn't seem to serve a purpose, and find a plant that probably never should have been planted. As we wrap up this episode, Kate shares a few stories from a fellow historian, Kirk shows us a dangerous plant, and we admire a few trash cans before saying goodbye to the unsettling garden.Join us LIVE on YouTube most Thursdays at 10:30am Pacific/1:30pm Eastern for more Distory!Kate's Youtube: @disneyciceroneYou can also find us on Instagram, Facebook, and at disneycicerone.com & walruscarp.comView full video versions of each episode at Disney Cicerone's YouTube channel HERE OR on the Spotify version of our podcast. Many thanks to Disney historian Joshua at E82 | The Epcot Legacy for contributing resources for this episode!Kate's books on AmazonWalrusCarp T-shirts & MerchMOWD appDistory T-shirts and StickersKate's Substack
Someone connected with the Tower of Terror actually disappeared... but no one ever talks about it. Drop in with us on this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk as we creep closer to the derelict Hollywood Tower Hotel to decipher the history and warnings hidden within the design. As we step off of Sunset Boulevard and walk up the driveway, we pull out rare original Imagineering storyboards and show guides to help us understand exactly what the story is that we see in the scenery around us. Approaching the gate, we find a disappearing curb, a date with integral plot significance (that no one ever talks about), and a few changes over the years as the Tower has aged. After Kirk chats about some plants, we step inside the front gate at our own peril and start to hear ethereal music haunting the grounds. But there's more to these tunes than meets the ear, as many of them have their own story to tell that, once you realize their secrets, makes the Tower even more terrifying than you ever dreamed.Join us LIVE on YouTube most Thursdays at 10:30am Pacific/1:30pm Eastern for more Distory!Kate's Youtube: @disneyciceroneYou can also find us on Instagram, Facebook, and at disneycicerone.com & walruscarp.comView full video versions of each episode at Disney Cicerone's YouTube channel HERE OR on the Spotify version of our podcast. Many thanks to Disney historian Joshua at E82 | The Epcot Legacy for contributing resources for this episode!Kate's books on AmazonWalrusCarp T-shirts & MerchMOWD appDistory T-shirts and StickersKate's Substack
What does a cocktail shaker and a 5-gallon canister of kerosene have to do with the Tower of Terror?Drop in with us to the Hollywood Tower Hotel as we explore the story, mechanical design, and construction of the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror! This episode of our Distory with Kate and Kirk podcast explains how the complicated ride system operates, with some unique details and information from the Imagineers who worked on the project in the 1990s. We start with a detailed telling of the attraction's backstory before moving on to explore the history of elevators, explore some Disney “firsts” (and fact check some things that were not, in fact, “first”), and then move on to explaining how this attraction was engineered. Kirk takes us back in time, Kate takes us back to Big Thunder for a moment, and we wrap up the Tower's construction journey with a few thoughts from Imagineers (and a hilarious story from opening day).Join us LIVE on YouTube most Thursdays at 10:30am Pacific/1:30pm Eastern for more Distory!Kate's Youtube: @disneyciceroneYou can also find us on Instagram, Facebook, and at disneycicerone.com & walruscarp.comView full video versions of each episode at Disney Cicerone's YouTube channel HERE OR on the Spotify version of our podcast. Many thanks to Disney historian Joshua at E82 | The Epcot Legacy for contributing resources for this episode!Kate's books on AmazonWalrusCarp T-shirts & MerchMOWD appDistory T-shirts and StickersKate's Substack
Everything you know about Sunset Boulevard is a lie. Well, maybe not ALL of it... But you probably don't know why it exists in the first place. On this episode of Distory, we are checking into the iconic Twilight Zone Tower of Terror to explore the evolution of the attraction's concept. After discovering how the Tower was named, we visit some rare Imagineering brainstorming notes, meet some boiler ghosts, and uncover how the design of the Tower impacted the entirety of the Sunset Boulevard expansion. Kate takes us through Kevin Rafferty's pitch to Michael Eisner, Kirk talks about design elements that came from historic places, and we pick apart the architecture to figure out the hodgepodge Hollywood Tower Hotel look. As we close down this episode, we run into Richard Nixon, meet some Queen Mary ghosts, and debunk a myth with the help of some Imagineering friends, a story that has been mistaken for truth by the Disney history community for years.Join us LIVE on YouTube most Thursdays at 10:30am Pacific/1:30pm Eastern for more Distory!Kate's Youtube: @disneyciceroneYou can also find us on Instagram, Facebook, and at disneycicerone.com & walruscarp.comView full video versions of each episode at Disney Cicerone's YouTube channel HERE OR on the Spotify version of our podcast.Distory T-shirts and StickersKate's SubstackKate's books on AmazonWalrusCarp T-shirts & MerchMOWD appFull Imagineering Panel Interview
The Tower of Terror was one of two major e-ticket attractions Disney considered for the Sunset Boulevard expansion. So what happened to the other one?In this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk, we check in to a new series exploring the details and history of the Tower of Terror, beginning with its context and backstory. We start with the history of freefall rides and how they evolved over time to set the stage for the Tower later on. Kate then takes us on a weird journey through the Twilight Zone television show before we visit the development of Disney's MGM studios (and Sunset Blvd in particular) and Disney's competition with Universal Studios Florida. We finish this episode with a discussion of a unique monster-themed attraction that never got the green light at Imagineering for this Hollywood-themed park, and highlight where you can still find some small pieces of this lost concept in the Disney parks today. Disney almost had a Legend of Sleepy Hollow ride, in not one, but TWO different parks. In this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk, we unearth some rare concepts for an Ichabod Crane-themed attraction by Imagineering—ideas that, much to our chagrin, never saw the light of day. We begin with a brief tour through the history of the Sleepy Hollow portion of The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, highlighting some incredible concept art by Mary Blair. From there, we head over to Walt Disney World to investigate what happened to Ichabod in both Fantasyland and Liberty Square. Along the way, we explore architectural influences rooted in literary history, uncover the origins of a classic Haunted Mansion song, and learn the backstory behind a popular invisible dog joke. Kate also shares details about a little-known, never-realized land once proposed for Disneyland. Meanwhile, Kirk terrifies us with a bizarre attraction from Hong Kong and reveals some shadowy concepts that reflect his deepest wishes for Liberty Square. We end the episode watching the Headless Horseman ride into the sunset—along with our hopes for what could have been (and may never be) when it comes to seeing this eerie attraction brought to life in the Disney parks.Join us LIVE on YouTube most Thursdays at 10:30am Pacific/1:30pm Eastern for more Distory!Kate's Youtube: @disneyciceroneYou can also find us on Instagram, Facebook, and at disneycicerone.com & walruscarp.comView full video versions of each episode at Disney Cicerone's YouTube channel HERE OR on the Spotify version of our podcast.Distory T-shirts and StickersKate's SubstackKate's books on AmazonWalrusCarp T-shirts & MerchMOWD app
What would it have looked like if Mr. Toad made a comeback in the Magic Kingdom? In this episode of Distory, we head back to Mr. Toad's in Walt Disney World for one last ride before they demolished this beloved attraction. After finishing our detailed journey through Track B (learning about Disney's oldest criminal along the way), we have a virtual Toad-In as we protest the closure of this iconic ride. After we've accepted Toad's fate, we highlight a few places you can still visit J. Thaddeus in the park and debunk a wildly accepted Disney rumor. We wrap up this series with some incredible, rare Disney concept art featuring a modern version of Mr. Toad in the Magic Kingdom that sadly never came to pass, and we toast our hero, Mr. Toad, who will always be remembered, even if he wasn't quite as profitable as Winnie the Pooh. What are several glaring anachronisms in Walt Disney World's Mr. Toad's Wild Ride?On this episode of Distory, we motor on through the first half of Track B in the extinct Walt Disney World version of Mr. Toad, looking for the details and history that have been lost over time. After discussing some silly portraits (and a disappointing motto) in Toad Hall, we crash into the library and find some anachronistic quills, a few connections to Disneyland, and a surprising origin of a word connected to a piece of armor. We then fly out into the barnyard to explore some recycled Bruce Bushman concepts, learn about curly pig tails, and admire some eyelashes. Kirk gives us a lesson on Disney's favorite chickens, Kate gives a rundown of some repeated audio animatronics, and we end this episode toasting Disney's incredible illusioneer Yale Gracey, who brought us chicken mobiles, pouring tea, mylar flames. and so much more. What artwork appeared in WDW's Mr. Toad that would NEVER be in a Disney ride today? In this episode of Distory, we head back to Walt Disney World's extinct Mr. Toad's Wild Ride attraction to finish motoring through Track A. After going the wrong way down a one way street, we spend some time meeting the inhabitants of Town Square (and discovering some borrowed lamps along the way). Kirk teaches us how to mount a penny-farthing and Kate shares some heartwarming stories of Alice and Marc Davis before we pop on into Winky's pub to discover some shocking artwork and a few design flaws. After discovering another Disney blunder in the Keg Room, we dash our way through the Rain Room and get hit by a train before descending into the hot place, where Kate shows some old Bruce Bushman concepts to explain a missing scene that no one ever talks about in Disney history.Join us LIVE on YouTube every Thursday at 10:30am Pacific/1:30pm Eastern for more Distory!Kate's Youtube: @disneyciceroneYou can also find us on Instagram, Facebook, and at disneycicerone.com & walruscarp.comView full video versions of each episode at Disney Cicerone's YouTube channel HERE OR on the Spotify version of our podcast.Distory T-shirts and StickersKate's SubstackKate's books on AmazonWalrusCarp T-shirts & MerchMOWD app
Why did Rolly Crump add a Gypsy Camp to Mr. Toad's Wild Ride?In this episode of Distory, we continue motoring through track A of Walt Disney World's extinct Mr. Toad's Wild Ride attraction. As we crash through the kitchen window, we head out into the woods to explore some Rolly Crump posters foreshadowing the camp around the corner. After Kirk does some palm reading and tells Kate's fortune, we do a deep dive into Romani culture and history in order to understand what this unique scene is all about, and why Rolly Crump chose to put it in this attraction. Kirk gets excited about some wagons, Kate teaches us about what instruments should (and should not) be in this scene, and we find a few familiar characters before coming to a screeching halt just before we slam into a sideways caravan door into next scene. Note: We know that “Gypsy” is a derogatory term for the Romani people, but it is historically accurate to this scene as that is how it is described on the 1971 blueprints and layout. So, for the sake of historical accuracy, we do use this terminology in this episode. Did Disney World's Mr. Toad steal design elements from another popular Disney attraction? On this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk, we head back to Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom to motor our way through Track A of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. But we don't get very far on this madcap adventure, since there are so many details to see in Toad's abode. We start by exploring some of the 3D sculptures and the meaning behind the portraiture in the grand hall before crashing our way into the trophy room. As we wind our way around this unique scene, we find some petticoat duelists, a prop unique to Rolly Crump, and a few animals we've seen before. We wind down this episode in the kitchen, discussing the deeper meaning of the staging of the room and learning a little bit about animation history inspired by a tipsy maid before we screech to a halt and save more of Track A for next week. Mr. Toad moved to Florida for the opening of Walt Disney World... but he was never meant to be there. In this episode of Distory, we hop on over to the Magic Kingdom and explore the history behind why Mr. Toad became part of (yet another) Fantasyland. Along the way, we discuss Rolly Crump (the lead Imagineer of this version) and hear his take on the design of the Magic Kingdom and life in general so that we can more fully understand his work within this iconic attraction. After a thorough look around the exterior and queue, including comparing it to the Disneyland versions both past and present, we find some long-lost WED documents, analyze some changing motorcar designs, and debate the design choices of the character flats on either side of the two tracks. We finally come to a screeching halt just before entering Toad Hall to allow plenty of time in future episodes to dig into every detail we can find that made this classic ride so delightfully weird and wonderful.Join us LIVE on YouTube every Thursday at 10:30am Pacific/1:30pm Eastern for more Distory!Kate's Youtube: @disneyciceroneYou can also find us on Instagram, Facebook, and at disneycicerone.com & walruscarp.comView full video versions of each episode at Disney Cicerone's YouTube channel HERE OR on the Spotify version of our podcast.Distory T-shirts and StickersKate's SubstackKate's books on AmazonWalrusCarp T-shirts & MerchMOWD app
Why does Mr. Toad end up in a very hot place at the end of his ride when he doesn't go there in the book or the movie? In this episode of Distory, we wrap up the Disneyland part of our Mr. Toad's Wild Ride series exploring the history & Imagineering that created this classic Disney attraction. Along the way, we explore secrets in dark prison corners, find a connection to a few famous dark rides, meet a shirtless Disney director who defined an iconic character, and figure out why people are misremembering the 1955 version's train tunnel scene. Kirk finds a (possible) origin for the wiggly cow devils, Kate explains why there is a giant green dragon, and we escape our own fate in the hot place by debunking a popular rumor and explaining exactly why Imagineering chose to have the charming Mr. Toad end up in Hell. What subtle signs of judgment are often overlooked in Mr. Toad's London Square scene? In this episode of Distory, we hop back in our motorcar to Mr. Toad's Wild Ride in Disneyland for a deep dive into the history and symbolism found in the London Square and Law Court scenes. Along the way, we hear some often-missed audio, discuss the origins of Lady Justice, and notice some signs that are telling a greater story than most guests realize. As we take a spin around the symbolic fountain, we spy some interesting characters in the window, disturb some angry workers, and hear an obscure Mary Poppins chimney sweep story. Kate sings a few songs, Kirk shares some disgusting and disturbing pie stories, and we end up "Guilty" with a barrister-turned-judge (and some foreshadowing most people miss in the Law Court). These three things do NOT belong inside Winky's Pub (but we kinda get why they're there.)On this episode of Distory, we pause on our journey to nowhere in particular in Mr. Toad's Wild Ride to have a pint in the pub with Mr. Winky (or is it Winkie...or Winkey?). Before we drive right in and pull up to the bar, we discover Winky's full name (and what it means in context of English history). Kate discovers a disgusting and frightening reference just outside the pub, and Kirk gets frustrated by something that shouldn't exist once we roll on inside. We consult an expert to give us the history of hunting horns, Kate crams in a few (slightly related?) Disney history stories here and there, and Kirk's beer cicerone knowledge and BJCP Beer Judge certification get put to the test as we discuss the fascinating history of barrels, fermentation, and firkins. As we bid adieu to Mr. Winky, Kate shares one last story about can-can girls, their knees, and what Alice Davis said to Walt Disney to cover her tracks. There are a few things everyone seems to believe about the layout of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride--but none of them are true. On this episode of Distory, we're merrily on our way to nowhere in particular to understand the English countryside in Mr. Toad's Wild Ride in a greater historical context. After we encounter a few bobbies (and discuss their manners and wardrobe), we dig deep into the context of Wind in the Willows and how it inspired the art we see for Ratty's House. As we fly around the corner toward the farmer and his sheep, Kate gets on her soapbox and debunks one of the biggest lies ever told about Mr. Toad. Kirk shares some portside foreshadowing, Kate explains why the Tower Bridge is included in this attraction, Kirk sings some AC/DC, and Kate gets nerdy with typography as this episode goes out with a bang. Even if you've been on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride a thousand times, we guarantee you've missed at least one of these details. In this episode of Distory, we slow down our motorcar to a snail's pace to analyze all of the elements inside Toad Hall in Disneyland's Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. After looking over the toadally fun bookshelf puns, we speed away into the attraction, pausing to look at the decorations, portraits, clocks, decor, art, and architecture that are telling more of a story than you might realize. Kirk takes us on a journey through medieval heraldry and armor, Kate points out a hidden Mickey and discusses a failed fireplace effect (and its replacement) and eventually , we roll to a stop in the dining room with a surprisingly dapper Moley and a nod to the old 1955 version of this attraction. What do priest holes, artichokes, and old grape vines have to do with the current version of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride? On this episode of Distory, we drive along down the road to the 1983 remodel of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride in Disneyland. Along the way, we take a detour to Storybookland Canal Boats, learn about the design influences of Toad Hall, and discover some details that many people miss in the newly designed facade. Kate takes us down some bizarre rabbit trails to talk about Tudor architecture, anodized aluminum chains, Tony Baxter's house, and the history of turnstiles, and Kirk shares some untold stories about the history of New Fantasyland before we roll to a stop just past the Toad statue (that looks a little different than it used to). With teetering tea trays, lazy signalmen, and dangerous rogue props, the first version of Disney's Mr. Toad was a wild ride, indeed. In this episode of Distory, we continue merrily on our way to somewhere in particular, and that would be 1955 to take a ride on Disney's original version of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. As we hop in a hot rod and speed our way through Toad Hall, we discover through some rare photos of this attraction that some scenes are similar to what we have today… and some are drastically different. Using old concept art from Bruce Bushman as a guide to our mania, we go down bumpy streets, break through walls, and discover a few quirky characters along the way. Kate talks about lamps and lanterns, Kirk discusses the importance of using all the senses in dark rides, and we both find ourselves in a very hot place in the end (and explain exactly why this bizarre ending is in a family-friendly attraction). Mr. Toad's ending wasn't always as shocking as the one we know today. In this episode of Distory, we continue merrily on our way through this series featuring Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. We start off by highlighting Mr. Toad's first pre-opening appearance in a 1954 Disneyland prospectus, before exploring a rare early Bruce Bushman “Motor Mania” concept that heavily influenced the original Mr. Toad. Kirk sings some Toad-themed AC/DC to describe the track mechanism, we both marvel at the scrappiness of Arrow development, and Kate talks about some (critical) things that didn't go well when it came to installation and opening day. What do gremlins, sweet potatoes, rivets, and Sherlock Holmes have to do with Mr. Toad? In this episode, we find ourselves merrily on our way to a new series featuring Mr. Toad's Wild Ride as we dive into our fourth season of Distory! In order to fully understand the only “Mister” in Disneyland, we begin with exploring the making of the package film that started it all: The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. Along the way, we discover what Disney studios was doing during the Second World War, hear some tea about author Roald Dahl (and some dubious ways he became famous), and explore the turbulent road to this film's production. Why are there so many random lawn ornaments in the new Haunted Mansion queue? On this episode of Distory, we use our knowledge of the history of the Haunted Mansion to try to make sense of the new expanded queue in Disneyland. We start with some discussion about why Disneyland's queue is so drastically different than Disney World's interactive one before inching our way past each gargoyle, owl, face, and statue in this unusual queue. Along the way we find the origin of the word panic, find some lost concepts, and discover an overarching theme that is evident in an abundance of props that most people are missing. What do oscilloscopes, Swiss cheese, and Barack Obama have to do with Disney's defunct Skyway ride? On this episode of Distory, we fly up above the Disney parks like a tea-tray in the sky as we board a bucket for the Skyway in both Disneyland and Walt Disney World. This gondola ride not only provided a picture-perfect view of the parks, it carried history with it from some unique places in Europe where Walt spent time (possibly escaping his brother). As we walk through the concepts, creation, and evolution of this beloved attraction, we learn about the art of the Fantasyland sky station, what the inner section of the Matterhorn was called, some unique railing designs, and the rumors (and facts) about why this ride closed. Kirk says something Kate never thought he would say, Kate visits an Amish barn, and we end this episode discussing the Magic Kingdom version and talking about where you can find some remnants of this defunct attraction today in both Disneyland and Walt Disney World. When it comes to obscure Disney history, there is so much to be thankful for. From tiny pants to exploding sewer pipes, this episode truly has it all. In this episode of Distory, we each bring three unique stories from Disney history that people rarely talk about but we are thankful for. Kate kicks it off with what Lillian Disney thought of Walt's food habits. Kirk then discusses a bizarre wardrobe choice from a Disney executive, before giving us the inside scoop on exactly why Disney World churros are not as good as the Disneyland ones (and the answer might surprise you!). Kate visits some lost Disneyland quick-service restaurants, Kirk relives his fond memories of a playground in MGM studios, and Kate shares two stories from the Red Wagon/Plaza Inn that are both a little shocking and hilarious. How did Epcot evolve from an experimental prototype community to a theme park with an identity crisis? In this episode of Distory, we wrap up our exploration of the evolution of EPCOT by discovering what happened to Walt's concept of a futuristic community after he passed away. To get some context of how the team was trying to make it happen despite the loss, we review some rare WED 1973 inter-office memos that reveal the thoughts and design direction of what EPCOT could be. We also walk through the ways the Imagineers had to get creative in order to save the concept from being scrapped altogether during the 1970s energy crisis. Kirk finds a bizarre lost bathroom, Kate discovers the origins of a favorite Food & Wine festival snack, and we wrap up this series finally putting to rest what country you actually start in for the World Showcase (historically speaking). Why did Walt Disney have Herb Ryman's E.P.C.O.T.'s concept art altered from the original version? In this episode of Distory, we go back in time to explore the E.P.C.O.T. that never was, Walt Disney's original vision for the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. After exploring the influence of Victor Gruen on Walt's plans, we move through the city step-by-step, finding nooks and crannies of previously unexplored history along the way courtesy of a Distory listener's exclusive interview with Imagineer George McGinnis. Along the way, we find some not-so-magical policies that the average American wouldn't particularly like, a pub that pays homage to a Disney animation hangout, and a lost airport that can still (sort of) be found at Walt Disney World today. How did Walt's past impact his decision to create an experimental community of tomorrow? In this episode of Distory, we begin a new series exploring the origins of EPCOT, beginning with Walt Disney's Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. But before we dive into the details of this utopian city, we have to give some context behind WHY Walt would want to create a city when he had spent most of his life focused on animation, movies, and theme parks. From explaining Disney's impact on urban planning to understanding Walt's legacy, this introspective episode delves into the mind of Walt to help us understand why E.P.C.O.T. was so important to him. Kate also gives us some rabbit-hutch insight into the world of Disney's Hyperion studio, Kirk shares an unusual source of funding for CalArts, and we discuss how project timelines in the Disney parks have changed from 1955 to the present day. What three unexpected characters show up inside of Seven Dwarfs Mine Train? In this episode of Distory, we hop aboard Seven Dwarfs Mine Train in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World to ride through Disney's newest Snow White attraction. On our way, we spot some recycled pieces from an old ride we've seen before, hear about how Dopey got his ear wiggle, get mad about sticking tommies, and discover all the ways the Imagineers integrated pieces of the classic 1937 animated film into this attraction. Kirk gets shocked by a hidden Mickey he didn't know about, Kate discusses Joe Grant's inspiration for the Witch, and we spend a little time in the cottage finding turtles, candlesticks, and a pair of hands that are MUCH too large for our comfort. What hidden stories can be found in the trees in Disneyland? In the Distorian's Lounge with Kate this week, we return to Disneyland to tell 10 more tree-mendous tales of unique trees in Disneyland that all have stories to tell. From condolence trees to ones that trick your perception of the park, these stories include some obscure details that even the biggest Disney history fans may not have heard before. As we make our way around Disneyland on this tree tour, we learn about how Lillian was irritated with Walt (and how he tried to appease her the wrong way), a tree that went missing in Fantasyland, and another one that did a little traveling over the years. We end our tour with a famous Disneyland resident that some people often overlook and a little preview of Kate's upcoming book. (Note: Kirk and his family are safe and well after Hurricane Milton, we hope to return to our Snow White series next week!) What untold stories from Snow White's history are hidden in the queue of Seven Dwarf's Mine Train? In this episode of Distory, we walk the queue of Walt Disney World's Seven Dwarf's Mine Train to discover not only some fun interactive features that the Imagineers added for guests to discover, but also some hidden secrets you may not even realize are nods to the classic 1937 animation. Kirk takes us on a rabbit trail about thatched roofs, Kate shares an epic task Ken Anderson created for Walt while he was deathly ill, and we both marvel at the techniques the original animators used to create the scenes we know and love from this historic Disney film. After Kirk yells at Kate to spin some barrels and we learn how to eat our soup properly, we share a few personal projects that have us whistling while we work before climbing aboard some hand-crafted mine carts bound for a mine where a million diamonds shine. WDW's new fantasyland was not planned to look like the one we have today. In this episode of Distory, we visit the dilapidated Fantasyland of the Magic Kingdom of the late 90s and early 2000s to watch how Imagineering's major overhaul of this land evolved over time. Along the way, we find some lost concepts of major areas that were scrapped, including a Cinderella attraction that is not *quite* like the one Kate wishes Disney would create. As we finally arrive at the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train concept, we dive into the construction process. Kate walks us through the evolution of the ride vehicles in development, including their fascinating hand-painting process. Kirk discusses the construction on a larger scale, walking us through the assembly of this E-ticket attraction. Is this the most unhinged attraction that Disney has ever created? In this episode of Distory, we head back to the 1971 version of Snow White's Adventures in Walt Disney World. We start by finding ourselves in a dark dwarf's cottage (with a bizarre guest) before encountering many MANY jump scares by the terrifying witch, whose hands have a secret. We race through the mine before discovering a crazy scene that is not in the original film and make a connection between its ending and the 1958 Alice in Wonderland dark ride. After we escape, we move forward in time to the 1994 version of Snow White's Scary Adventures, finding the ways Imagineering tried to make this ride less scary and more like the original film. Much to Kirk's chagrin, Kate talks about the history of turtlenecks, ponders the different looks of princes, and gives us some mirror lessons before we say goodbye to this bizarre classic attraction. What made the WDW 1971 version of Snow White's Adventures the most scary version of them all? In this episode of Distory, we head to Walt Disney World's Fantasyland to be terrified by the 1971 attraction Snow White's Adventures. We start by discussing the Towering Talent of Claude Coats and his influence in these classic attractions, and do a quick tour of some lost Fantasyland ride concepts before heading into Snow White's Adventures. On our way, we encounter a poorly-dressed queen, some throne history (and confusion), identify a dungeon spider, and encounter some creepy eyes and trees. We hear about how Disney covered up some mistakes in Snow White's animation, Kirk regales us with his Sleepy Hollow dreams, and Kate admits something she hopes she never has to do again. How did Imagineering fix a major flaw in Snow White's Scary Adventures? In this episode of Distory, we head back to Snow White's Enchanted Wish to discover some details that no one notices in the attraction. As we ride through the second half of this iconic ride, we compare and contrast the previous iteration of Snow White's Scary Adventures with the changes that were made to make the storytelling honor the 1937 feature film. Along the way, Kate talks about the history of door knockers and crystal balls, Kirk investigates some gargoyles, and we find a beautiful tree with a secret meaning (and a few others wearing rather odd disguises). What tiny detailed changes did Imagineering make to this iconic ride that most people miss? In this episode of Distory, we do a side-by-side comparison of Snow White's Scary Adventure and the first half of Snow White's Enchanted Wish, going over all of the many changes between the two versions of this attraction. Along the way, we hear from Imagineering about how they respected the history of this ride and the classic animation as they enhanced the story to make it appealing to modern audiences. Kate shares a few obscure stories about the making of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs from the original 1937 animators, Kirk verifies some diamonds in the mine (and gets annoyed at others), we both get a little confused by a pie, and we find a new location for some old bread (that no one ever notices.) Why does the Evil Queen have such a large collar? And how did guest behavior change the way this ride was structured? In this episode, we dig dig dig into the history of Disneyland's Snow White's Scary Adventures, including the meaning behind some significant scenes. Throughout our ride through this terrifyingly delightful attraction, we encounter some obscure animation history, discover the origins of evil old women, and go deeper into why there are so many dungeon scenes. Kirk talks about buildings with chicken legs, cauldrons, and wooden crocs, and Kate discusses Walt's hatred of purple, the backstory behind a very cute little turtle, and explains why the witch is so over-the-top dramatic in the original animated feature. What was the real reason Disneyland's Fantasyland rides were expanded in 1983? In this episode of Distory, we time travel to Disneyland in the early 1980s to look at some original WED Imagineering documents that tell the story of New Fantasyland's construction, including Snow White's Scary Adventures. From demolition to the inspiration for the new design, we discuss the changes from Walt's Fantasyland to the updated version before heading inside the attraction to find a (purposefully) frightening queue, a fascinating (for Kirk) stump, and an early ride concept that didn't actually come to pass. In the dwarf's cottage, Kate gets on several soapboxes, we marvel at the dwarf's shaving rituals, and Kirk enlightens us about the unique candle holder that Snow White is carrying as she heads to bed. Why do Disney's Snow White rides have so many dungeon scenes? In this episode of Distory, we continue our Snow White series by braving the original Disneyland Snow White ride called Snow White and Her Adventures (or Snow White's Adventures, it didn't seem to matter much back then, so pick your favorite). After seeing some concept art that doesn't stray too far from the feature film, we hear from Arrow Development about the unique development of this opening day ride, find some mural seams, and geek out over a camouflaged operator station. Heading into the ride, we are creeped out by a tiny Dopey, find a connection back to the Haunted Mansion, and meet a skeleton named Oswald. We find some more scary trees, talk about witch variations, and end the episode with Kirk insisting that he will always call the witch a hag (despite Kate's numerous evidence that the name is incorrect). Who was Snow White's mother? And what other critical information is missing from the feature film? In this episode of Distory, we start a new series on the history of the Snow White attractions of the Disney parks. But before we can discuss the rides, we have to pay homage to the first-ever full-length feature animation that made it all possible: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. In this episode, we take a journey back in time to learn why Snow White was first, what story elements you might have missed without more context, some missing scenes, and more than a few rejected dwarf names. We discuss the innovative use of rotoscoping and the multiplane camera and hear from the animators themselves about their experience working on the film. We end this episode with some inspiring words from Walt Disney himself and spend a few moments reflecting on the importance of not giving up even when others don't believe in your dream. Is there a superior version of Pirates of the Caribbean in the US Disney parks? In this episode of Distory, things get a little heated as we debate which version of Pirates of the Caribbean is best: Disneyland or Walt Disney World. Using historical stories, statistical facts, and present-day perspectives, we both try to prove that one ride clearly comes out ahead. Along the way, we have some fun telling a few new tales about this beloved attraction, from Yale Gracey's unique practical effects to how specific smells impact our DIsney experience. What joke is present in Disneyland Paris's Big Thunder that most guests don't notice? We've come to the end of our epic 20-episode series featuring Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, but we have time for one final ride on a runaway train as we hop aboard the best version of this attraction in Disneyland Paris. As promised, Kirk packs us some miner's lunches before we talk about a mistake Tony Baxter fixed, some lost Audio Animatronic miners, a piece of mining equipment that surprises us by being in all four versions, and a possum's anatomically impossible actions. We also hear a bizarre poem about beans, speculate on the meaning of some mining tools, and explain some foreshadowing elements that many overlook. How is the Tower of Terror connected to Disneyland Paris's Big Thunder Mountain Railroad? In this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk, we continue our exploration of the "crown jewel" of all the Big Thunder Mountain Railroads, the one in Disneyland Paris. After a brief discussion of concept and construction, we check out all of Pat Burke's amazing antiques in the queue, including a few with some surprising stories. From a coveted piece of rare machinery to a tribute to one of WED's great model makers, this queue was meant to be the pinnacle of all the versions of Big Thunder. After waxing nostalgic about stamp mills and woodstoves, we continue down to the loading dock where Kirk is delighted by a particular prop. What secret tributes can be found in Big Grizzly Mountain to several attractions that came before it? In this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk, we laugh our way through the creative storytelling of Hong Kong Disneyland's Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars. Kirk asks some inappropriate questions about bears, Kate laughs at his fictional niece, we learn a little about sawmills and stoves, and find some magnificent crates that hold a few nods to previously explored places. What celebration in Disney history wasn't really a celebration? We're celebrating 100 episodes of Distory with Kate & Kirk with a fun episode dedicated to six unique celebrations throughout all of Disney history! Kirk's three stories take us (via a few hats) to a galaxy far, far away, a nauseating (or creative?) overlay, and a long-forgotten magical tribute. Kate's three stories head back a bit further (as usual) and involve some jealousy over a tiny hat, kidnapping a public figure, and a trip back to the Haunted Mansion for a (non?) celebration we have never discussed before. We also spend a few moments reminiscing about what 100 episodes has meant to us , where we've been, and expressing our deep appreciation for our Distory friends who are journeying along with us with each episode on this crazy podcast ride. Along the way, we briefly discuss how this park came to be, find some new mining equipment we haven't seen before (and some we have), get excited about a foos engine and Pelton wheel, and debate way too long about possible tram buckets on blueprints. We hear from Pat Burke about how Big Thunder brought him closer to Michael Jackson, Kirk struggles to pronounce various geological names, and we hear an oration of a patent for a tool you'll never see the same again. Kate waters some borax mules, Kirk finds a monocled robot, and all our detailed research makes us pause right before loading onto the Big Thunder trains, which means we'll have to hop aboard the actual ride on our next episode. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/disneycicerone/support
What story is the mining equipment telling us on Big Thunder Mountain? On this episode of Distory, we complete our ride through of Walt Disney World's Big Thunder Mountain, pausing to notice all the details and history along the way. We begin by discussing what Kirk calls the “Ram Trick” (and Kate insists is not a thing) before discovering an abandoned mine, a dangerous saw, and a few somewhat lackluster special effects (including why they are lackluster). As we hold on tight during this wild ride of an episode, we collect some facts about rocker boxes, miner's moss, and how weather affects geothermal activity, before slowing down to spy the roundhouse and a blacksmith area that almost everyone misses. Kirk sings a little karaoke, Kate is too gullible when it comes to his jokes, and we share some thoughts about Marc Davis's legacy and our own pursuit of what matters.
