I'm so excited to get to share today's chat with you because I firmly believe I'll be talking about this book on our awards show at the end of the year. I got to recently catch up with comics writer Ryan K. Lindsay to hear all about his new Mad Cave Studios project, Deer Editor. This is a noir like none other. That simple addition of a man/deer character adds so much range with what you are able to execute with the story. Ryan was kind enough to drop a few examples of Australian noir film and tv titles during the chat that I had to add to my viewing list. I'll drop them below so you don't have to write it all down while you are listening. Deer Editor #1 dropped in stores this past week. Make sure to check it out. In Episode 107 of X-Band: The Phantom Podcast, we are delighted to bring you a recording of a The Phantom panel from Brisbane Supanova on November 10, 2018.While the topic as advertised in the program was promising, unfortunately the Supanova team did not exactly bring together a heap of Phantom experience for the panel. Established cover artist Jamie Johnson certainly brought credibility with him. However it is fair to say that co-panelists Tom Taylor, Ryan K Lindsay and Dean Rankine, while amazing writers and incredible talents in their fields, are less well-versed in Phantom lore.Even so, no one was more surprised than X-Band podcaster and covertly-recording audience member Dan when Tom got down from the panel stage and swapped seats with him about 15 minutes in, after he made what he thought would be a short appearance with an audience comment on a point Dean had made, Jamie was very gracious in sharing his first ever Con panel with a ChronicleChamber blow-in and had some very nice words to say about the work we doKeep a special ear out for Jo, whose statements from the audience really have the potential to resonate with a lot of Phantom phans.Special thanks to all panel members - especially Tom Taylor - as well as the moderator for being accommodating enough to bring ChronicleChamber onto the stage and contribute in some way to the conversation.Happy Phantoming!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chroniclechamber)

This week’s guest is Doug Wagner, the writer of Plastic, now available in trade paperback from Image Comics.  Plastic is hands down one of my favorite comics of the year.  It features artwork by Daniel Hillyard and colors by Laura Martin.  This is a story about a man named Edwyn who is trying to win back the love of his life, Virginia who has been kidnapped by the mob.  Also, Virginia is a rubber sex doll.  This is a dark humor book covered in blood and it is so much fun.  I cannot recommend it enough.   Doug can be found online at his official website, ShockNoggin.com and on Twitter at @Doug_Wagner. Quick update for you on the Kickstarter front.  Past guest, Ryan K. Lindsay has a new Kickstarter campaign for a sci-fi spacesuit noir one-shot called Stain the Seas Scarlet with artist Alex Cormack.  It’s a pretty awesome comic and the entry price is very low so it’s easy to jump right in and enjoy.   CONTACT: Email | Twitter SUBSCRIBE: RSS | iTunes | Google Play | Stitcher Music by Eric Matyas (www.soundimage.org)

This week I caught up with Matt Miner.  I’ve been following his work for some time, back to the punk rock zombie comic, Toe Tag Riot.  Matt, along with Eric Palicki, is an editor of This Nightmare Kills Fascists, a new horror anthology framed around the current political climate.  The book is currently on Kickstarter and it’s well worth your time.  There are a ton of great creators onboard this project.  In addition to Matt and Eric, there’s Ryan K. Lindsay, Ryan Ferrier, Justin Jordan, Christopher Sebela, Kelly Williams, Christian DiBari, and many more.  I’ve backed the project myself and I urge you to do the same.  You need to act fast though as the campaign runs through July 14th. As if that wasn’t enough, Matt is also writing GWAR: Orgasmageddon through Dynamite Entertainment.  I had no real exposure to GWAR prior to this book, but I am quickly becoming a fan after reading the first issue and talking to Matt about the group.  He had me at “Penguins shooting blood out of their eyes.”  You can pick up the first issue of GWAR: Orgasmageddon now and issue #2 is set to arrive on July 5th. On this episode of The Comics Alternative podcast, Derek and Andy W. discuss four new titles. They begin with Ryan K. Lindsay, Eric Zawadzki, and Sebastian Piriz's Headspace (IDW Publishing). This was originally an eight-issue digital series published by MonkeyBrain between March 2014 and April 2015. A law enforcement officer, Shane, finds himself in a surreal land with no memory of how he got there nor any idea how to leave. He eventually discovers that he is inside the mind of a violent criminal whose brain is being manipulated by the authorities. As the guys point out, this is a psychological thriller as much as it is an astute exercise in world-building. Next, they take an extensive look at Nate Powell's You Don't Say (Top Shelf), a collection of seventeen short stories published between 2003 and 2013. For readers who appreciate Powell's previous works -- such as Swallow Me Whole, Any Empire, The Silence of Our Friends, and the first two volumes of March -- this is a wonderful opportunity to see the development as well as the full range of the creator. The earlier stories, several of which were part of his first Top Shelf book Release Me, demonstrate Powell's autobiographical attempts to capture an artist in transition. But the emerging impact of the writer becomes more apparent in the later works where you can more clearly see some of the characteristics that mark Powell's style, such as the theme of race relations (often set in the South) and the psychological quality of his storytelling. In fact, Derek points out that in many of Powell's work, there is a "dreamy" quality where transitions between scenes and even panels are represented in a fluid, and at times ambiguous, manner, reflecting the way in which memory and fantasy allows us to interpret the world. Both Andy and Derek highlight their favorites in this collection, including "Cakewalk" (written by Rachel Bormann), "Bets Are Off," and the gothic "The Villa at the End of the Road." These collected stories originally appeared in earlier Powell works, in various anthologies, as part of a CD release, and as self-published installments. Together they demonstrate the sheer force of Powell's artistry. Finally, the Two Guys look at two recent releases from Nobrow, Andy Poyiadgi's Lost Property and Jen Lee's Vacancy. These are both part of the publisher's unique 17x23 series, a graphic short-story project established to help young creators present their work in a concise and economic format. Lost Property is a brief tale about missing pieces, the various things we have lost throughout our lives -- both literal and figurative -- and how their rediscovery can help us define who we are. Lee's comic is an anthropomorphic narrative about the costs of freedom. Simon, a young dog, is neglected by his owners, yearns to venture beyond his backyard fence, and then ventures into the woods with a deer and a raccoon, with mixed results. Both of these short works are beautifully produced -- Andy specifically points out Nobrow's distinguishing coloring -- and highly affordable. For a little more than the cost of an ordinary American comic book, you can get a 17x23 publication that is more of a book than a periodical. The guys featured a Publisher Spotlight on Nobrow last year, and there's certainly a reason that they keep coming back to their publications.
