Today's episode is brought to you by Reburn. Please, treat yourself and get a copy of this brilliant indie comic. Check out this playlist that Rich made for this book! In February 2023, IDW Publishing is releasing issue #1 of its IDW Original Series, Breath of Shadows, a five-issue miniseries from Bram Stoker Award–Nominated Comic Book Creators Rich Douek and Alex Cormack that melds the horror genre with drugs and rock ‘n' roll, resulting in an edge-of-your-seat, dark-and-twisted, must-read! BREATH OF SHADOWS SYNOPSIS: It's 1968. On the fast track to becoming one of his era's most iconic rock stars, Jimmy Meadows should be basking in the glow of newly acquired wealth and fame. Instead, crushed by the weight of a debilitating heroin addiction, Jimmy is on the verge of losing everything—until an old friend tips him off to an unorthodox treatment method hidden in the depths of the South American jungle. With fair-weather friends, local opportunists, and industry sycophants in tow, Jimmy sets off in search of what he's sure will be a miracle cure. But as the excursion veers off course and the realities of their environment begin to bleed together with Jimmy's paranoia and drug-induced hallucinations, the team quickly descends into a nightmare of bloody chaos populated by unspeakable horrors that surpass even the most brutal drug trip. About the Creators Rich Douek is a Bram Stoker Award finalist and the writer of original series such as Sea of Sorrows, Road of Bones, and Wailing Blade. He has contributed to Marvel's Wastelanders, and DC's Superman: Red and Blue and Strange Love Adventures, among many other projects. Born in Queens, NY, he is a lifelong resident of the NYC metro area and works as a creative director in advertising when he's not busy writing comics. Alex Cormack is a Bram Stoker Award-nominated Illustrator whose work includes Sea of Sorrows and Road of Bones from IDW, The Crimson Cage from AWA Studios, Sink from ComixTribe, Duel and Weed Magic from Bliss on Tap, and who has worked with IDW, Image Comics, Oni Press, Adult Swim, KRS Comics, and a bunch more. He lives in Vermont with his wife, his son, and his cat Destruction. WOOHOO! We are two years old, TODAY!!! Yes, just 2 short years ago we decided to start recording our comics chit chatter and haven't looked back since. It's been such a great 2 years as well, from being approached by publishers and creators to review their work to making a tremendous amount of comics friends. All by way of this little podcast as well. We want to thank each and everyone of you for supporting us this past 2 years and we look forward to many more. To celebrate, we have this brand new episode in which the folks here discuss some of the books we received and/or bought recently. There is also a little added part by Tom where he goes through even more recent titles since the podcast was originally recorded. With titles from people such has Avery Hill, Good Comics, Lucy Sullivan, ComixTribe, Matt Garvey, Awesome Comics, Little Heroes and so much more. So sit back, relax and raise a glass to That Comic Smell Podcast... the little nipper is growing up so fast! *sniff* Music: Chartsmasher - Dial Up https://chartsmasher.bandcamp.com/releases

This week’s guest is Clay Mcleod Chapman, the writer of Lazaretto from BOOM! Studios.  This was hands down, one of the creepiest books I’ve read in the past year. It’s the kind of comic that will have you washing your hands afterward and for good reason.  The series ran for five issues and you may be able to find them at your local comic shop. The trade paperback isn’t out for a bit, but you can definitely pick up digital copies of the single issues on ComiXology or Kindle.  This one comes highly recommended, folks. Clay can be found online at his official website, ClayMcLeodChapman.com. In other news, early Funny Book Splatter guest, John Lees is back on Kickstarter with the first volume of Sink from ComixTribe.  This collects the first five issues of the series including some extra material. It’s available in both a softcover and limited edition hardcover.  I backed this thing as soon as I saw it was launched and I strongly urge you to do the same. ComixTribe always overdelivers on their Kickstarters and they have some special giveaways planned for this very short campaign. We’ve got something a little different for you this week with guest Jason Ciaramella, the writer of the children’s book C is for Cthulhu from ComixTribe.  I’ve been following this brand for some time as I have two little monsters of my own at home and they absolutely love it.  Jason and artist Greg Murphy started out with an ABC book featuring adorable versions of H.P. Lovecraft’s creations.  Since then, they’ve ran a number of successful Kickstarter campaigns for plush toys, coloring books, and now a bedtime story called Sweet Dreams Cthulhu.  At this time, the campaign is not only fully funded, but it’s plowing through stretch goals at an incredible pace.  I am a backer myself and I’m anxiously awaiting getting my hands on the book and sharing it with my kids as it’s a great way to continue their journey into the horror genre.   Check out the Sweet Dreams Cthulhu Kickstarter here.  Jason can be found online on Twitter.  In other news, me and my Raging Nerdon co-host BJ Boothe just released our commentary track for the hit animated film, Bee Movie as episode 47.  I’m sure the public has been clamoring for more Bee Movie talk.  We recorded the episode with special guest, Guillermo del Toro who was the original writer and director of the film. Spoiler alert: That’s not really true and del Toro wasn’t really there, but BJ does do an imitation of him for at least half the episode.  Please don’t sue us.   SUBSCRIBE: RSS | iTunes | Google Play | Stitcher Music by Eric Matyas (www.soundimage.org)

Derek is back at his local comic shop, Valhalla Games and Comics in Plano, TX, for the October on-location episode. But it is also Halloween ComicFest 2016, adding even more flavor into mix. He is joined by customers of the shop, some of them in costume, to discuss horror comics, Halloween specials, as well as scary movies and games. They spend  much of their time discussing the many free comic-book offerings for this year's Halloween ComicFest. Derek is particularly interested in the special horror manga issues, such as VIZ Media's Tomie and Drawn and Quarterly's Shigeru Mizuki's Kitaro: Strange Fun for Everyone. But there are many other titles that the gang discusses, ranging from holiday-appropriate (e.g., Comix Tribe's Mummy's Always Right, American Mythology's The Three Stooges Halloween Hullabaloo, and the BoooOOOoooM! Box Halloween Haunt 2016) to Halloween-free, such as several offerings from DC and Marvel.

Look who’s back! Josh Flanagan comes out of Talksplode hiatus to speak with a couple of bona fide comic book creators about the process, mind, and lifestyle of the creator-owned comic book maker. From the mind of the artist, to the way to make it work with your life, to the challenges of the modern market, the conversation covers a ton of ground, and is a real insight to what it means to make comics. Charles Soule (Swamp Thing, Thunderbolts, Letter 44, Superman/Wonder Woman) has risen through the ranks of comic book writers over the last year to the point where he’s currently writing seven ongoing series, with a mix of DC, Marvel, and indie series. He’s a returning guest. You can find him on Twitter here. Joe Mulvey is the creator of Scam from ComixTribe, a writer and artist who is paving his own way through comics. He’s currently in the process of a Kickstarter campaign for the SCAM Ultimate Collection, featuring a short story written by Josh himself, as well as hundreds of pages of other content from a host of great names in comics.
