Hello and welcome to the Monday Breakfast show for the 17th of March 2025. On today's show: - Last Tuesday the Allan Government announced that the public housing tower in Flemington, whose residents are currently part of an ongoing class action lawsuit, will be demolished and redeveloped without any new public housing. The decision involves what the Victorian government calls the 'Ground Lease Model' whereby the land is leased to a private company who will design, build, manage and maintain the sites for forty years. Rob spoke with Flora from the Renters and Housing Union to tell us more about this shameful move from the Allan government. The interview mentions this RAHU Fundraiser for the Union's eviction fund, taking place this Saturday at Mamma Chen's from 7pm. It also mentions a Noongar-led campaign to have Sister Kate's land returned to Noongar people. You can read more about the campaign here. - We hear an excerpt of Rob's conversation with Buzz from the Covid Naarm bloc, who work to supply COVID PPE via mutual aid and community support. This interview is particularly timely considering Long Covid Awareness Day was on March 15th. Read about Long Covid here, and follow the Covid Naarm bloc here.- Hannah spoke with Amelia Dunn and Tuia Suter about their show Lost Property, to support their show go to artists.australianculturalfund.org.au and search lost property a one-woman show, or go to their instagrams @ameliardunn @tuiasuter - more upcoming shows will be coming to naarm later in the year, keep your eye out!- CW: This segment features discussion of Indigenous peoples' deaths in custody as well as naming Indigenous people who have died in custody. On Wednesday last week the Victorian Government announced it would toughen bail laws to make them the toughest in so-called Australia. Within these laws, the Allan government plans to reintroduce the offence of committing an indictable crime while on bail -- which was scrapped in 2023 following the coronial inquest into the death of Gunditjmara, Yorta Yorta, Dja Dja Wurrung and Wiradjuri woman Veronica Nelson in custody. The coronial inquest found that Victoria's bail laws were a 'complete and unmitigated disaster' that disproportionately impacted First Nations people, women and children. Maggie Munn, First Nations Justice Director at the Human Rights Law Centre and proud Gunggari advocate from south-west Queensland joined us on the show to speak about these harmful bail laws. Maggie is deeply committed to ending the mass incarceration of their people, and has spent many years as an advocate and campaigning on First Nations children, raising the minimum age of criminal responsibility, and youth justice.Tomorrow at 4:30pm there will be a snap action for Poccum's Law outside Parliament Steps, organised by Flat Out.- The show ends with a conversation with Jay Coonan, spokesperson for the Antipoverty Centre and a jobseeker recipient. Rob spoke with them about the latest report released by the Economic Inclusion Advisory Committee. The organisation is involved in this educational event providing tips on how to speak about poverty in the media ahead of the budget and the next Federal election. Read more about the event here. Songs played:- A Dream With A Baseball Player - Faye Webster- Nothing Ever Changes - Backhand [https://backhandshc.bandcamp.com/track/nothing-ever-changes]

Sydney Trains collects approximately 50,000 lost property items left on trains and atstations each year.  Dedicated staff try extremely hard to reunite passengers with their personal property, but sometimes items go unclaimed for months or even years. Sydney Trains has established a new partnership with Muru Mittigar, a proud DharugAboriginal Social Enterprise in Western Sydney, to donate unclaimed lost propertyitems. Muru Mittigar is passing these items on to its community partner organisationsacross the state. So far this year, Sydney Trains has donated: more than 100 bikes, more than 20scooters, body boards and a selection of clothing, handbags, wallets and sports gearlike fishing rods, tennis rackets and balls. A variety of general goods were alsodonated like, toys, sunglasses, umbrellas as well as household appliances like a ricecooker, electric frying pan, a pedestal fan, a sandwich press and a Soda Stream. Brand new personal items like make-up, perfume, and creams were also included. Ms Clark says, “It is wonderful that these unclaimed items can find new life and new use with families and children across the state.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

משיחת עשרה בטבת ה'תשמ"ה ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=28-12-2023 Synopsis Today's Rambam is the first three chapters of Hilchos Gezelah ve'Aveidah (the Laws of Robbery and Lost Property). 1) The order in the Rambam (“Mishneh Torah”) follows the order in Chumash – first the laws of theft in Parashas Mishpatim, and then the laws of robbery in Parashas Vayikra. However, in the Alter Rebbe's Shulchan Aruch, which contains “the necessary laws”, the laws of robbery come before the laws of theft, because practically speaking, a robbery (which is done in public) is resolved more quickly than a theft etc. 2) The connection between Gezelah (robbery) and Aveidah (lost property) in Divine service: “Robbery” refers to sin in general, which “rob” from holiness to unholiness. In order to return the item that was robbed, one must search for the “lost object” – the general concept of teshuvah. And then, not only is the situation restored to its original state, but the divine soul becomes the sole ruler of the body, because the other side is transformed into good.Excerpt from sichah of 10 Teves 5745 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=28-12-2023 לזכות ר' יוסף בן מנוחה שי' ליום ההולדת שלו ט"ז טבת – לשנת ברכה והצלחה, ואריכות ימים ושנים טובות

Urban geographer at the University of Melbourne Dr Kate Shaw weighs in on the economic, social, and cultural factors and incentives that cause property to be hoarded—and what policies need to change to correct the situation. Earlier this month, one very lucky man was told he would be allowed to keep half of a treasure trove of diamonds, emeralds and sapphires he'd found back in 2013 while hiking on Mont Blanc in France. It's an incredible true story of buried treasure, but finding valuables on the street, beach or even within your own home is more common than you might think, so how do you know if you're allowed to keep them? And what happens if you're the one who lost the precious items in the first place? The Quicky speaks to two legal and policing experts to find out if it really is a case of 'finders, keepers' when you discover valuables by chance, or if pocketing them instead of reporting it to the authorities could land you in some legally hot water. On this episode of The Comics Alternative podcast, Derek and Andy W. discuss four new titles. They begin with Ryan K. Lindsay, Eric Zawadzki, and Sebastian Piriz's Headspace (IDW Publishing). This was originally an eight-issue digital series published by MonkeyBrain between March 2014 and April 2015. A law enforcement officer, Shane, finds himself in a surreal land with no memory of how he got there nor any idea how to leave. He eventually discovers that he is inside the mind of a violent criminal whose brain is being manipulated by the authorities. As the guys point out, this is a psychological thriller as much as it is an astute exercise in world-building. Next, they take an extensive look at Nate Powell's You Don't Say (Top Shelf), a collection of seventeen short stories published between 2003 and 2013. For readers who appreciate Powell's previous works -- such as Swallow Me Whole, Any Empire, The Silence of Our Friends, and the first two volumes of March -- this is a wonderful opportunity to see the development as well as the full range of the creator. The earlier stories, several of which were part of his first Top Shelf book Release Me, demonstrate Powell's autobiographical attempts to capture an artist in transition. But the emerging impact of the writer becomes more apparent in the later works where you can more clearly see some of the characteristics that mark Powell's style, such as the theme of race relations (often set in the South) and the psychological quality of his storytelling. In fact, Derek points out that in many of Powell's work, there is a "dreamy" quality where transitions between scenes and even panels are represented in a fluid, and at times ambiguous, manner, reflecting the way in which memory and fantasy allows us to interpret the world. Both Andy and Derek highlight their favorites in this collection, including "Cakewalk" (written by Rachel Bormann), "Bets Are Off," and the gothic "The Villa at the End of the Road." These collected stories originally appeared in earlier Powell works, in various anthologies, as part of a CD release, and as self-published installments. Together they demonstrate the sheer force of Powell's artistry. Finally, the Two Guys look at two recent releases from Nobrow, Andy Poyiadgi's Lost Property and Jen Lee's Vacancy. These are both part of the publisher's unique 17x23 series, a graphic short-story project established to help young creators present their work in a concise and economic format. Lost Property is a brief tale about missing pieces, the various things we have lost throughout our lives -- both literal and figurative -- and how their rediscovery can help us define who we are. Lee's comic is an anthropomorphic narrative about the costs of freedom. Simon, a young dog, is neglected by his owners, yearns to venture beyond his backyard fence, and then ventures into the woods with a deer and a raccoon, with mixed results. Both of these short works are beautifully produced -- Andy specifically points out Nobrow's distinguishing coloring -- and highly affordable. For a little more than the cost of an ordinary American comic book, you can get a 17x23 publication that is more of a book than a periodical. The guys featured a Publisher Spotlight on Nobrow last year, and there's certainly a reason that they keep coming back to their publications.
