On this week's AIPT Comics Podcast, we're joined by writer Kenny Porter and artist Tyrell Cannon to talk all things Operation: Iron Coffin, the wild new IDW Dark series that drops Dracula onto a Nazi war train in one of the year's coolest high-concept comics. During the interview, the duo digs into balancing horror and action, Dracula's internal struggle, the grindhouse inspirations behind the violence, and how the book evolved into a monster-filled gauntlet packed with occult science, anime influences, and brutal fight choreography. Dave: Absolute Martian Manhunter #12 (Werther Dell'Edera Card Stock Cover) Alex: Wiccan & Hulkling: Raid of Ultron #1 Interview - Kenny Porter, Tyrell Cannon - Operation: Iron Coffin - July 8th - FOC June 1 Asking for an elevator pitch usually feels a bit cliche as an interviewer, but then Operation: Iron Coffin feels like it deserves it since it kind of has the perfect tight setup, care to share one? Earlier this year you mentioned to Chris Coplan Dracula isn't really a hero here, even if he's the protagonist. How important was it to frame this as a redemption story without ever sanding off the uglier truths about who Dracula is and what he's done?  Tyrell, you talked before about Dracula wrestling with the cost of his immortality and violence. Visually, how do you show that internal conflict in a character who often presents himself as cold, confident, and almost unstoppable? The first issue moves at a breakneck pace, but there are key flashbacks and supernatural moments that hint at something deeper under the grindhouse chaos. Kenny, how did you approach layering emotional depth into something that's also designed to feel like an adrenaline-fueled action movie? The Nazi train setup creates this perfect “one nightmare after another” structure where every car can introduce a new horror. Was the book always designed like a deadly gauntlet, or did the train concept evolve as you built the story? There's a fascinating tension between nature and science in the issue, especially with Dracula as this ancient evil crashing into engineered horrors and wartime experimentation. Was that thematic contrast something you wanted front and center from the beginning? Tyrell, one thing I loved was how physically dominant Dracula feels. He's ripping people apart, shrugging off attacks, and moving through scenes like a slasher villain unleashed. What were the biggest influences behind the choreography and sheer brutality of the action sequences? Hazel and Ivy immediately make a strong impression, especially because they seem to understand Dracula in ways others don't. What can you tease about their dynamic with him and why they're such dangerous opponents specifically for this version of Dracula? Kenny, the issue somehow makes Dracula sympathetic without asking readers to forget he's a monster. Were there any versions of Dracula in film, literature, or comics that influenced your take, or did you intentionally try to move away from previous interpretations? Fun/silly question: if your Dracula had a playlist blasting while he fought his way through the Nazi train, what songs or bands would absolutely be on it? Fun/silly question to cap things off: Dracula has now fought through a Nazi train like the star of the wildest action movie never made. If you could drop your version of Dracula into any other movie genre or setting next, where would you send him?

What drew you to reimagining Green Arrow through that lens rather than a more traditional superhero approach? For Rafael Albuquerque: The visuals carry a lot of mood and unease. How did you approach designing a version of this world that feels grounded but still heightened enough for horror? Trick arrows, yes or no? For Pornsak: Dinah Lance is effectively our entry point into this mystery. What made her the right character to lead the story instead of Oliver himself? For Rafael: This series deals with violence in a more unsettling, investigative way. How do you balance making those moments impactful without overwhelming the reader? For Pornsak: The suspect list of archers is a clever way to tap into DC history. How did you decide which characters to include, and how do you make each feel distinct within the mystery? For both: This series is arriving after several Absolute titles have already established the tone and expectations of the line. How did you think about fitting into that larger world while still carving out your own identity? For Pornsak: There's a question at the heart of issue #2 about whether the killer is something to stop or understand. How important is moral ambiguity to this version of Green Arrow? For Rafael: Oliver Queen's presence looms large even in death. How did you approach visual storytelling around a character who is central but not always physically there? Fun question for both: If you had to survive in this world and pick one DC archer to have your back, who are you choosing… and who are you absolutely avoiding?

Jace takes a look at Fireborn #1 from Image Comics, breaking down how the issue connects to the Lost Fantasy universe while evaluating how effectively it functions as a standalone story. With discussion of the creative work from Curt Pires, Franklin Jonas, Patrick Mulholland, Mark Dale and Micah Myers, the episode examines the structure of the oversized debut, the introduction of Aaron Hilberg and his connection to the dragon egg, and how the pacing benefits from the extended page count. The conversation also explores how the character's attitude is grounded in his personal circumstances, the balance between action and setup, and whether the issue establishes a strong foundation moving forward. Additional context is provided on the early market reaction, including the sellout and speculation, along with whether the demand reflects genuine reader interest or short-term attention.

It's a topic we discuss a lot. When you love comics, you eventually want to make them. Curt Pires heard Franklin Jonas professing his love for the medium on a podcast. Immediately, he recognized a kindred spirit. Pires invited Jonas to play. The result is the new Image Comics series Fireborn, spinning out of Pires' massive comic book playground, Lost Fantasy. Maybe you've already read the logline: Fireborn is Invincible meets How to Train Your Dragon meets Absolute Batman. Whoa, okay. That's a lot, but what does that actually mean? On this week's podcast, we get into it with Franklin Jonas and Curt Pires. We break down those other stories and consider what they owe to Spider-Man and his Amazing Fantasy #15 debut. Where do you begin when creating an F'd up Peter Parker? And did we mention the hot takes? Franklin Jonas has them! We give the musician the space to profess his passion for comics, champion his all-time favorite Daredevil run, and explain why not enough of you are reading the current JSA monthly written by Jeff Lemire. In Fireborn, Aaron Hillburg is a rich kid who runs face-first into Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey. He answers the call to action, but when will he reject it? With great power there must also come great responsibility. One issue in, we got part one of that statement. Is part two coming? Let's geek out about what comics can do that no TV pitch can ever contain. Fireborn #1 is out now from Image Comics. It's written by Curt Pires and Franklin Jonas, illustrated by Patrick Mulholland, colored by Mark Dale, and lettered by Micah Myers. Make sure you're following Franklin Jonas on Instagram and Curt Pires on BlueSky and Instagram. As someone who works in music, where rhythm, pacing, and emotion are everything, did that background influence how you approached writing Fireborn—especially in terms of momentum, dialogue, or how scenes “flow” on the page? Aaron Hillburg is introduced as a “rich-kid failson,” which is such a loaded archetype—what made him the right entry point for a story that quickly becomes this massive, magical chase? The dragon egg bonding to Aaron is such a striking image—what did you want that relationship to represent, both visually and emotionally, as the series unfolds? Patrick Mulholland's art brings a kinetic, almost explosive energy to the concept—how closely did you collaborate on visual storytelling, especially with something as wild as a floating dragon egg? 11:10 Dark Reign war machine 11:45 Fear Itself This feels like a story about inheritance in more ways than one—family, power, responsibility—what themes were most important for you to explore through Aaron's journey? For readers who haven't touched Lost Fantasy before, how accessible is Fireborn as a jumping-on point, and what kind of experience were you aiming to deliver in issue #1? If Aaron had to survive in New York for 24 hours before the egg bonded to him, what's the most “failson” decision he'd make that would somehow make everything worse?

This week's spotlight interview is with Timmy Heague, co-writer of Lost Fantasy #9, and is especially revealing, not just because of the wild hooks (Nazi dinosaurs, bazooka swords, monster hunting), but because of the unique vantage point he brings as both a writer and a longtime comic shop owner. That dual perspective shapes everything, from how he thinks about audience expectations to how stories are built to connect on the shelf. This interview goes far beyond Lost Fantasy #9. Timmy Heague digs into his unlikely path from comic shop owner to working writer, how collaborations with Curt Pires and Franklin Jonas actually function behind the scenes, and why being on the retail front lines gives him a sharper read on what fans want than most creators. You'll also hear about the realities of breaking in, the push and pull of co-writing, and the mentors who helped shape his voice. What interested you most about picking up his story at this breaking point? You're working with Eamon Winkle on the Bombshell story. What makes Bombshell a compelling lens into this world, and how does her story complement or contrast Henry's? You're co-writing this issue with Curt Pires and Franklin Jonas, while also contributing to a backup that ties into Fireborn. How did you all divide the storytelling responsibilities, and what did that collaboration look like on the page? You've recently come off co-writing Archie vs. Minor Threats with Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum, which thrives on tonal contrast. Did that experience influence how you approach tone here, especially with the mix of action, sci-fi, and character work? The solicit teases Henry being pulled into a new case while still recovering. How do you balance forward momentum with giving weight to his injuries and trauma? The issue introduces the “Cyber-Ronin,” which is an instantly striking concept. What was the creative spark behind that character, and how does he challenge the world of hunters in a new way? Lost Fantasy blends genres in a big way, from cyberpunk elements to mythic hunting lore. When you're writing in that kind of sandbox, how do you keep the story grounded and emotionally clear? Fun one: if you had to drop Bombshell into another comic universe for a one-shot, where would you send them and why?

Today on Word Balloon, I'm talking with a creator who's carving out his own lane between nostalgia, genre chaos, and straight-up adrenaline storytelling, Curt Pires. From his breakout fantasy hit Lost Fantasy at Image Comics: a monster-slaying throwback with serious momentum thanks to artist Luca Casalanguida. To the hyperviolent sexy cosmic trip parody of Galactic at DSTLRY with Amilcar Pinna, Curt's work is all about big swings and bold humor. Now he's leveling up again with Fireborn, co-written with musician Franklin Jonas and drawn by Patrick Mulholland. It's a neon-charged, '90s comics and 32-bit video game fever dream about a billionaire's reckless son fused with a dragon egg in the heart of New York City. We'll talk about the evolution of his storytelling, the energy behind these books, and why Fireborn might be his wildest ride yet.

On this episode of Fantastic Forum we're talking about Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Galactic from publisher DSTLRY, and the animated movie All You Need Is Kill. Starfleet Academy is the newest live-action entry in the Star Trek universe, premiering on Paramount+, it follows the first new class of Starfleet cadets in over a century as they train aboard the USS Athena in the 32nd century. Created by Gaia Violo and co-showrun by Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, it attempts to blend classic Trek exploration with coming-of-age drama and interstellar conflict. Shifting gears to comics, Galactic from DSTLRY is a hyper-kinetic interstellar adventure written by Curt Pires with art by Amilcar Pinna. It's pitched as a blend of blockbuster sci-fi and lovers-on-the-run romance, following a roguish bounty hunter tasked with retrieving a runaway princess, only to find themselves tangled in a sprawling galactic war and unexpected emotional stakes. And on the big screen, All You Need Is Kill is a striking animated adaptation produced by Studio 4°C and directed by Kenichiro Akimoto. Based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka's influential sci-fi novel (the source material for Edge of Tomorrow), this version tells the time-loop story following warriors trapped in death-and-reset cycles as they fight an alien threat and inch closer to breaking their endless loop. We've consumed the media, let the thoughts percolate, and now we're ready to break down what worked, what didn't, and why each entry deserves discussion. Watch tonight at 6:30 pm PT and call in live at www.fantasticforum.live to share your thoughts. Fantastic Forum, assemble! I mean, all of them are really creator forward. They're real big swings, Lobo and Deathstroke. They're big over the top epic books. Batwoman, real, real great swing by Greg Rucka and Dani. Zatanna really levels Zatanna up. Firestorm and Shadow of the Bat. I mean, there are just so many good ones. There really are. Legion of Superheroes and Jonah Hex and there's just a ton coming that we can't wait for you to see. And they're all passion projects. And a lot of that is born out of you guys supporting things that are riskier, that are different, that hopefully feel yours. And it's the best time I've ever had in superhero comics. Curt Pires stops by to tell us about his latest work, LOST FANTASY. In Lost Fantasy, there's a magical world that lies beneath ours, and first contact was made over a hundred years ago between the two worlds due to a natural disaster, resulting in a schism that allowed monsters to break through. Since then, secret monster slayers, known as The Great Hunters, have been working with global leaders to police the border and to keep our world safe from the creatures that lurk in the shadows. But last night, something broke through, resulting in a mysterious mass killing in Montana, and causing things to shift in a way that will ripple through both worlds. Now it's up to rookie monster hunter Henry Blackheart to stop it… For More from Comics Are Dope:Get This Week in Comics, our weekly e-mail newsletter: http://thisweekincomics.comSubscribe on YouTube: http://youtube.com/@comicsaredopeJoin our online Discussion Communities:Facebook - http://bjkicks.link/communityDiscord - http://bjkicks.link/discord

(jk) Getting big “90s badass” vibes from him, in a fun way! The conception and perception of cancel culture are prevalent in all walks of life, is there a grand statement you're trying to make on the concept of being “canceled”?Do you think/One might construe this comic is trying to say those who are canceled may not be treated fairly, or it's not necessarily the consequences of their actions, just mob mentality, what would you say to that argument? The story takes place in 2050, given the state of the world today, is your estimate for global blood lust for people being canceled too late or too soon? There are two kills in the first issue of “canceled” people that seem to be a reference to real-life folks, how do you walk the line of depicting potential real-life people in fiction? Why do you think there's a love of hitmen in our culture?

You have no money, no car, and just staying up late with friends was a really exciting thing. And thus, folks say the best cast is the years they were in high school…skipping the last bit, is there truth to that?Part of the magic of teenage wasteland is the group dynamic, how did you come to this specific group? The art by Jacoby Salcedo is impressive with a detail with character acting that's tops, what has it been like working with him?Something I really like with this series is the pace, and it's never holding back details but goes for it, are you ever pondering “this could work even better as a slow burn?”The title reminds me of The Who, was that track on repeat while writing this? The sister is specifically not yet 18, given the title is that important?

How long has the project been in the works?Given the political underbelly of New America, do you hope the series could enact change in the real world? There's a lot of passion on the page, particularly a scene with a burning of something, when writing the first draft for this did you have to scale back your own passion, or lean into it?It's hard to shock me, but I honestly was taken aback by some of the violence. I'm always curious, when were these stories first started as an idea, then scripted, and then finally finished? Can you walk us through the timeline a bit?Memoria is a story our heroes are an old and sick detective and a young burnout detective, why are these types of detectives well suited for your story? The art by Sundando C and colors by Mark Dale add a level of realism we don't often see in detective stories of any kind (movies, comics), can you talk a little bit about the approach with the art and textures?Whenever a serial killer story pops up I ponder, did the writer research every serial killer ever? How much research went into Memoria? The quotes in the back of each issue feel almost like clues for the reader, as if we should read it and ponder its significance to the story itself, is that the case or did you use these for a different effect? For what it's worth, loved seeing a Blood Meridian quote at the end of issue #3.The solicit text calls this TRUE DETECTIVE meets LETHAL WEAPON  Curious if you could comment on your opinion of True Detective and Lethal Weapon?Do you have a favorite DAVID FINCHER film? How do you approach writing dialogue? I noticed in the Memoria #1 advance copy, the slang is subtle, but it's there.Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou's lettering is something else with memoria, with no border on the word balloons, and ballons sort of gliding past each other never touching, were there prompts as far as lettering ideas? What was the process like?As someone who reads a lot of comics, I was curious if there are any specific comics you're reading right now that you're enjoying? With YOUTH currently in development with Amazon Studios is there anything you can talk about in regards to its development?

[ let him talk…] There is a lot ot congratulate you on since we last spoke, including Batman the Long Halloween Part 2 being released, MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE: REVELATION #2 out next week, and the ongoing mystery of Red X too. How has the reader response been to these works?Next week we're also getting Shazam! #2, and it's turning out to be a Billy Batson and Dane Constantine team up! I'd call this a “hero lost his mojo story” would that be accurate? Is it every writer's dream to tell a story in Hell? When it comes to comics creation versus writing for television, are there pros and cons to the speed in which the content is released and audience feedback can be registered? control**When approaching a text that's kind of sacred like the original Long Halloween, how do you decide what stays and what goes?I love that you kept the year two aspect in mind and really leaned into Batman being a bit more green. How did that affect how you approached the character? Has it created a desire to write a more seasoned Batman in the future?Gilda is given so much more agency in this story, which I love. Honestly, all of the women are. Was that a conscious decision or did it just come about in the scripting process.Selina gets so much more to do in this version of the story. What do you think the key is to Batman and Catwoman's relationship? What has the collaboration process been like on the MOTU comic, with Kevin Smith and Rob David outlining the story and then you taking it to the scripting process?Okay, let's talk Orko. For me, he was the absolute heart of Revelation Part 1. How did it feel to write his big moment?Off Topic Top Shelf: Tim Sheridan  - Gum!

This episode, Adrian speaks with illustrator Eric Scott Pfeiffer. Pfeiffer is a multi-faceted artist with inroads to comic books, editorial illustration and concept design. Eric's first comic book series with writer Alex Paknadel, 'Arcadia' was recently collected into a trade paperback by BOOM Studios. Eric discusses 'Arcadia', his upbringing in a creative household, attending Virginia Commonwealth University's renowned Communication Arts program and becoming one of the distinguished alumni currently making waves in the art world. There's some real talk about his brief experience with almost getting a Hollywood storyboard job and the inspiration thereof that made Eric seek a another avenue for his work. All that plus Eric details his work process on his upcoming comic book series 'The Forevers' with writer Curt Pires.
