For this week's Local Legends interview, Eleanor is chatting with author Francesca Simon MBE.We were pretty amazed when Francesca agreed to join us - she's very well known, the author of over 60 books, including the award-winning Horrid Henry series.Henry and his horrid exploits are hardly the only string to Francesca's bow, though. She's written a lot of other fiction too, often inspired by mythology, like The Sleeping Army and The Lost Gods. One of her books, The Monstrous Child, based on Norse mythology, was adapted into an opera which premiered at the Royal Opera House. What a lovely coincidence, then, that Francesca's most recent book, Salka, is a gorgeous retelling of Carmarthenshire's most famous legend, the tale of the faerie woman of Llyn y Fan Fach.A tragic romance dealing with the bitter consequences of not being truly understood, Salka is Francesca's version of a tale which has been told and retold many times, and always in slightly different ways. Unusually, Francesca first adapted the story as a cantata, 2022's The Faerie Bride, which premiered at the Aldeburgh Music Festival for two voices, choir and symphony, but the story still had a hold on her - and so Salka was born.Francesca and I had an excellent chat about writing, opera, and the magic of the place which inspired Francesca, drawing out the presence of the ocean in her work, which has captivated her since her childhood spent on the beaches of California, to Carmarthenshire's enchanting fairy lake.So gather round the Three Ravens fire and listen in, for a chat about a tale with a very long shadow, and the life and career of a true Local Legend: Francesca Simon. We really hope you enjoy this episode, and will speak to you again on Monday for a special interview with Mark Rees of the Ghosts and Folklore of Wales podcast! The Three Ravens is a Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on a historic county, exploring the heritage, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?REGISTER FOR THE TALES OF SOUTHERN ENGLAND TOURVisit our website Join our Patreon Social media channels and sponsors Hosted on Acast. In this episode of The Command Post, hosts Rick Lasky and John Salka reflect on their recent experiences at FDIC International. They share motivational stories, including an inspiring speech by Kristina Moon, the widow of firefighter Billy Moon, which emphasized the significance of organ donation and the value of such lifesaving efforts. They also discuss the importance of training and efficiency, touching on how these factors directly impact emergency response times and ultimately, the lives of those they serve. With anecdotes and lessons learned from their extensive experience in the fire service, Lasky and Salka highlight the need for readiness, teamwork, and a proactive approach in tackling the challenges faced on the fireground.
My guest in this week's Book Club is Francesca Simon. Best known for her Horrid Henry series of children's books, Francesca has just published her first novel for grownups, a haunting reworking of a Welsh folk tale called Salka: Lady of the Lake. She tells me how she came to shift direction, what myths offer in terms of storytelling possibility – and why she never tired of her best-known creation.
In this episode of The Command Post, hosts Rick Lasky and John Salka discuss the critical role of commitment in the fire service. They highlight the responsibilities of volunteer and career firefighters and explore the dynamics of service, dedication, and training. During the discussion they emphasize the importance of showing up for every call—from mundane to critical. The conversation also touches on recruitment strategies, the value of elections in leadership, and the need to set an example, especially for younger firefighters. With anecdotes from their own experiences, Lasky and Salka illustrate how a collective commitment to excellence not only enhances operational efficiency but also fosters community trust and pride in the fire service. Adaptability and resiliency... and that of course all went out the window as soon as the audience started asking their great questions. The following is a conversation with John Salka. John began his career in politics in 2001 having spent time on the Brookfield Central school board, Brookfield town supervisor, and county board of supervisors. He chaired a number of key committees including Planning and Economic Development, Mental Health, Social Services, Public Health and served as the vice president of the Board of Health for six years. John oversaw over 40 millions dollars of taxpayers money and his crowning achievement during his tenure was privatizing the public health nursing agency thus saving the taxpayers over a million dollars in the first year of its divestiture. He also chaired the Energy committee and was president of the Madison County Public Utilities Corp. In 2018 John was elected to the New York State Assembly representing the 121st district which encompassed all of Madison, the southern part of Oneida and most of Otsego counties. He served for two terms and due to unconstitutional redistricting he decided not to run for what would have been a third and final term. John is currently the Director of Community Affairs for congressman Brandon Williams of the 22nd congressional district that encompasses all of Onondaga, Madison and Oneida counties. I have followed John for sometime and believes he wants the best for upstate NY. His public service contribution is one I respect. He has been in a government role 23 years and has witnessed many trends, and political discourse, which is why I am excited to talk with him today.Link:Email: jsalka3@gmail.comSponsors:NativePath:Follow the link below to see all of NativePath's Pure Grass-Fed, Organic, Clean Supplements and use the CoMo15 code at checkout for 15% off!https://www.nativepath.com/Lombardi Chiropractic:https://www.lombardichiropractic.com/Mention the Co-Movement Gym Podcast when scheduling your initial appointment for 50% off Initial Consultation and X-Rays!Redmond:redmond.lifeOur team at Co-Movement Gym has used Redmond's Real Sea Salt, Seasonings, Re-Lyte Electrolyte drink and other products for years! Old School "You don't have to get ready, if you stay ready” with Chiefs Rick Lasky and John Salka
The man, the myth, the legend, FDNY Battalion Chief (ret.) John Salka joins the Better Every Shift podcast to share lessons that apply to all firefighters, on or off the fireground. Chief Salka and Zam formed an unlikely friendship years ago, bonding over health and wellness, as the chief made it a goal to get back in shape later in his career. Beyond sharing his motivations related to his renewed health focus, the chief reflects on why it's so important to prioritize personal time. It's great to be into the job – to really love the job – he says, but no one is ever going to wish they spent more time at work at the expense of family and friends. The author of “The Fire Scene” also recalls some of the biggest calls of his career and shares some great perspective on what it's like working with the newest generation of members joining the ranks. What else Don't miss: The story of the urinal quote Episode power quote: “The most important decision, the most important action that a fire chief takes is to hire the right people.” Hot seat sneak peek: The tactical operation he enjoyed the most early in his career

Welcome to season 3, episode 10 of the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast. This week's changemaker is an outstanding individual whom I am delighted to announce. Benjamin (Jamie) Salka, co-founder and CEO of Story Pirates, a media company geared towards providing children with a voice and sparking their passions for writing. He also serves as the co-founder of Story Pirates Changemakers, the not-for-profit arm of the organization. Jamie dove head-first into the project, promising that as CEO he would either catapult Story Pirates into greatness or “die trying”. It is clear that he has kept his promise, as the company has seen substantial success. He describes Story Pirates as a “magic trick” in which kids' perspectives on writing are shifted from that of a chore they are being made to do into an opportunity for creativity. Salka puts an emphasis on the realization of children that their writing can have an impact on their peers and motivate them to create entertaining, humorous material. His goal with Story Pirates is to help children understand the true purpose of writing rather than view it as an assignment for a grade. Jamie explains that he has “never felt so much conviction” towards anything as he had for Story Pirates. His relentless hard work and remarkable dedication are ever- inspiring to those of all ages. Listen in to hear how Lin Manuel Miranda and Jon Stewart helped to expand the reach of Story Pirates. In the next episode you will learn more about the upcoming International Changemakers Forum that will take place on Thursday, March 23, 2023.

The little-known story of screenwriter Salka Viertel, who created a refuge for famous figures escaping World War ll.
If you ever see the sky spinning at the speed of light at night, it might be Khonshu to blame. We get appearances from Moon Knight, Mr. Knight, Marc Spector, and Steven Grant in this episode AND a pretty big indication we have yet to meet another of Marc's persona non grata. Spector went on a nice little "treasure hunt" for clues to where Harrow would be digging, but kept coming up short. Khonshu signaled for a meeting of the Ennead "eclipse" style and got a dressing down from the five laziest gods on the planet. Maybe Harrow should just run for office if his run-around answer to "Why are you in the desert?" is so readily accepted by supernatural beings. Mere mortals wouldn't have a chance. In the end, the search for Ammit's ushabti by Arthur was allowed to continue while the creation of Khonshu's ushabti happened right before our eyes. Are we really watching a battle between these lazy gods that just LOOKS like it's between Arthur and Marc? Maybe the Ennead's three triads have been broken and we're seeing some power plays against Osiris and Isis. Those were a lot of ushabti's sitting there in the great chamber. Cross Selim and get chiseled? Maybe Hathor has the hots for one of the gods and our hearts just aren't light enough to be invited to that celestial party. Maybe Arthur is (gasp!) right and releasing Ammit will only be bad for the Ennead. What if Khonshu's quest for justice SHOULD end with his imprisonment? Three episodes remain to clear up questions and for the host of this podcast, a clear connection to the MCU's Phase Four needs to happen or this is just another exercise in wasting time. Music appreciation time! "Batwanes Beek" from Warda gets sampled by DJ Kaboo for "Enta" and it's beat begins and ends the episode for us. We also hear again from Abdel Halim Hafez, this time "Shaghalouny", another of Hathor's love songs, perhaps? "Walima" by Tito Rinesi gives us some street sound and "Salka" from Hassan Shakosh gets some ferry goers dancing on the way to Anton's house party. Reykjavíkurdætur urðu til upp úr rappkonukvöldum fyrir tæpum áratug, fyrst sem samkurl allskonar kvenna en síðar sem hljómsveit með ákveðnum fjölda og tilteknum einstaklingum. Þær mættu mikilli mótspyrnu til að byrja með, en yfirstigu andspyrnuna og hafa meikað það erlendis undir nafninu Daughters of Reykjavik. Þótt flestir Íslendingar hafi heyrt um hljómsveitina Reykjavíkurdætur hafa mun færri séð þær á tónleikum eða hlustað á plöturnar þeirra - eins og þær sjálfar hafa bent á. Er það vegna þess að þær eru konur, róttækar óþægilegar femínískar konur eða er músíkin ekki samboðin íslenskri menningu? Steiney Skúladóttir og Salka Valsdóttir úr Reykjavíkurdætrum fara í gegnum grýttan feril hljómsveitarinnar á Íslandi, upphafið sem markaði þær djúpt og er í raun helsta ástæða þess að þær hafa einbeitt sér að erlendum markaði. Við ræðum upphafið, músíkina, förum inn í karllægni og karlasamstöðuna í tónlistarsenunni, feðraveldi og femínisma, ræðum um kynferðisofbeldi, Twitter og framtíðina í músíkinni. Umsjón og eftirvinnsla: Þorsteinn V. Einarsson Tónlist: Mr. Silla - Naruto (instrumental) Dominos, Veganbúðin, The Body Shop og bakhjarlar Karlmennskunnar bjóða upp á hlaðvarpið Karlmennskan.
