Episode 22 - Murdock and Marvel: 1984 This week we enter continue with the massive expansion era for Marvel and the Direct Market, with important new creators, new companies, and a whole lot of turtles…its 1984!  The Year in Comics  Notable and Newsworthy Industry Trends Cartoon Art Museum: https://www.cartoonart.org/ Eagle Awards Dan's Favorite The Year in Marvel Events & Happenings Box Brown's “The He-Man Effect”: https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250261403/thehemaneffect  New Titles New Characters Series Ending Who's in the Bullpen ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Arthur Adams Dan's Favorite The Year in Daredevil  Appearances: Daredevil #202-213, Incredible Hulk #291 and 293, Defenders #127, Spider-Man and Daredevil Special Edition #1, Marvel Team-up #140-141, Elektra Saga #3-4, Marvel Age #17  Writing credits: Denny O'Neill (202, 204-207, 211-213), Steven Grant (203), Harlan Ellison and Arthur Byron Cover (208), Arthur Byron Cover (209), Denny O'Neill and David Mazzucchelli (210)  Pencilers: William Johnson (202, 205, 207), Geof Isherwood (203), Luke McDonnell (204), David Mazzucchelli (206, 208-13)  Inks: Danny Bulanadi (202-206, 208-11, 213), Bulanadi and Mel Candido (207), Bulanadi and Pat Redding (212)  The year starts and ends with Micah Synn – Chief of an East African Kingorge Tribe who are also descendants of British explorers who have been isolated until very recently. Synn, his two wives and a group of other followers have traveled to the United States. Many of the books this year chronicle Synn turning from a media darling to a wanted criminal hunted by Daredevil and Kingpin.  It starts off in Assistant Editor's month where we meet Micah Synn, his group and Professor Horactio Piper who wants to Enlist Nelson & Murdock to help with legal documents for Synn and company. Synn gets arrested for stealing food and then attacking a store owner as well as 3 police officers, upon release one of Micah's wives walks into the street and is hit by a car. At the hospital, Synn attacks another office before Daredevil intervenes.   One of the few detours from the Synn story, Daredevil takes on a new foe – The Trump – whom has one of Daredevil's childhood bullies is accused of helping. Daredevil stops Trump from taking a shipment of weapons. After being confronted by Foggy, Murdock drops Schmidt as a client.  Back to Synn, An assassination attempt on the chief that has ties to his family is thwarted by Daredevil and Debbie Harris throws a party and becomes infatuated with the Synn.  Next we meet Glorianna O'Breen, Debbie Harris' niece from Ireland, who is in New York over concerns she's in danger after her father is killed. Which turns out to be true. Daredevil saves her from being abducted and then saves her from a friend of her father's that turns out to be a killer called the Gael.  Micah Synn and company crash a Christmas Party and Matt Murdock's house which leads to a stolen kiss with Debbie Harris and another battle between Daredevil (aided by Kingpin no less) and Synn.  Another side story, As Daredevil must find a Russian defector and stolen microchip for Hydra in order to save a captured Black Widow. Daredevil finds the defector but not the chip and instead saves widow without it and the pair take down the Hydra agents who captured her.  Next Daredevil stumbles into a murder house trap set by the mother of a former villain. This story will be our spotlight story for the week.  Back to Synn, Chief Micah files a restraining order against Daredevil and his men have a run-in with Kingpin. During yet another battle between Synn and Daredevil, Synn learns of Murdock's secret.   Micah captures Becky and Vanessa for a human sacrifice to his god; DD intervenes, but Vanessa is killed; Kingpin reveals that Vanessa was really an actress he hired to keep his wife safe; DD and Kingpin team-up to take down Micah.  Matt Murdock holds a press conference to get the word out on Micah Synn, but his and Becky Blake's account is called into question by Foggy Nelson (at the urging of his wife Debbie). Harris then goes to Synn and professes her love to him and it's met with indifference and a needless slap to the face sending her to the ground.  As the year ends, the story with Synn is still going. Harris remains captive by Synn. Professor Piper seems able to look the other way on Synn until a friend and colleague of his is inadvertently killed. Piper creates a diversion and frees Harris who returns home and tells him what happened with Synn. When Foggy goes to confront Synn, he finds Piper dead and Synn's men looking to fight. Daredevil arrives and makes quick work of the tribesmen, but they aren't able to find Micah Synn.  New Powers, Toys or Places New Supporting Characters New Villains This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil #208 July 1984 “The Deadliest Night of My Life” Recap Why We Picked This Story The Takeaway This is a golden age. Questions or comments We'd love to hear from you!  Email us at questions@comicsovertime.com or find us on Twitter @comicsoftime. ------------------ THANKS TO THE FOLLOWING CREATORS AND RESOURCES  Music: Our theme music is by the very talented Lesfm.  You can find more about them and their music at https://pixabay.com/users/lesfm-22579021/.  The Grand Comics Database: Dan uses custom queries against a downloadable copy of the GCD to construct his publisher, title and creator charts.  Comichron: Our source for comic book sales data.  Man Without Fear: Kuljit Mithra's Daredevil site contains a staggering collection of resources about our hero, including news, interviews and comic details.    The American Comic Book Chronicles: Published by TwoMorrows, these volumes provide an excellent analysis of American comics through the years.  Because these volumes break down comic history by year and decade they are a great place to get a basic orientation on what is happening across the comic industry at a particular point in time.  Joshua and Jamie Do Daredevil: A fantastic podcast that does a deep-dive into Daredevil comics.  This ran from 2018-2020, and covered most of the first volume of Daredevil, and was a fun way to get an in-depth look at each issue of Daredevil from 1-377.  My Marvelous Year: This is a reading-club style podcast where Dave Buesing and friends chose important or interesting books from a particular year to read and discuss.  This helped me remember some fun and crazy stories, and would be a great companion piece to Murdock and Marvel for those who want more comic-story-specific coverage.  BOOKLIST  The following books have been frequently used as reference while preparing summaries of the comic history segments of our show.  Each and every one comes recommended by Dan for fans wanting to read more about it!  Licari, Fabio and Marco Rizzo.  Marvel: The First 80 Years: The True Story of a Pop-Culture Phenomenon.  London: Titan Books, 2020.  This book is sort of a mess, as the print quality is terrible, and Titan doesn't even credit the authors unless you check the fine print.  It's like this was published by Marvel in the early 60s! But the information is good, and it is presented in an entertaining fashion.  So its decent, but I would recommend you see if you can just borrow it from the library instead of purchasing.  Wells, John.  American Comic Book Chronicles: 1960-1964.  Raleigh: Two Morrows, 2015.  Not cheap, but a fantastic series that is informative and fun to read.  Wright, Bradford.  Comic Book Nation: The Transformation of Youth Culture in America.  Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 2001.  This is the revised edition.  Marvel Year By Year: A Visual History.  New York: DK Publishing, 2022.  The academic in my rails at using information from any work that doesn't have an author credit, but this is a decent (if very surface) look at each year in the history of Timely / Marvel from 1939 to 2021.    Cowsill, Alan et al.  DC Comics Year by Year: A Visual History.  New York: DK Publishing, 2010.  Because its nice to occasionally take a peek at what the Distinguished Competition is up to.  Dauber, Jeremy.  American Comics: A History.  New York, W.W. Norton & Company, 2022.  An excellent, relatively compact history of the domestic comic industry from its 19th century origins through to recent 21st century developments.  An excellent successor to Bradford Wright's Comic Book Nation.

Evan Bevins and Mark Radulich present our Comic Stripped 2 Guns Comparison and Review!2 Guns is a 2013 American buddy cop action comedy film directed by Baltasar Kormákur and starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg. It is based on the comic book series of the same name created by Steven Grant and Mateus Santolouco, published in 2007 by Boom! Studios. The film was released in the United States on August 2, 2013, and was met with mixed reviews from critics.Steven Grant (born October 22, 1953) is an American comic book writer best known for his 1985–1986 Marvel Comics mini-series The Punisher with artist Mike Zeck and for his creator-owned character Whisper. This pulp story about cops and thieves and the men that are something in between will have you scrambling to keep up with the twists and turns. Trench has targeted a local bank to rob, and asked Steadman in on the job. Trench figures it's a great way to score -- considering it's a cover for mob money. They'll be thieves ripping off thieves. But what Steadman doesn't know is that Trench is a DEA agent. And what Trench doesn't know is that Steadman's a Naval Intelligence officer. They're both undercover cops! And neither one knows that they're not robbing the mob -- they've been set up to steal $50 million from the CIA! Collecting the entire series that inspired the feature film, this light-hearted crime romp from comics legend, Steven Grant, is back and better than ever!Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsoFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulich

“The answer always goes back to Jaws,” said Jeremy Slater, when asked about why he got into the business in the first place. A movie he saw too young, it changed the way he saw movies and he knew he wanted to grow up to play with “giant, rubber sharks.” Slater's rubber sharks came in the form of The Exorcist, The Umbrella Academy, Fantastic Four, and most recently, Marvel's Moon Knight for Disney Plus. In his latest project, a six-episode series starring Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke, “Steven Grant discovers he's been granted the powers of an Egyptian moon god. But he soon finds out that these newfound powers can be both a blessing and a curse to his troubled life.” In this interview, Slater talks about smuggling exciting ideas into IP, writing words meant to be spoken and read, what it means to write Hard PG-13, and how he created six versions of Moon Knight. What a ride this has been. Marvel Studios has put out such a captivating and thrilling ride on Disney+ with Marc Spector and Steven Grant. We are here to break down the finale of Moon Knight and give our thoughts not only on this episode, but the entire series as well.We have had such a fun time reviewing this, and we've also opened up about a lot our own pasts with trauma and mental illness. Oh, and we also have gone off the rails plenty of times and made inappropriate jokes along the way (What else would you expect from us?)All this to say, we are thrilled with this show, and the direction Marvel Studios is taking with continuing the conversation of mental health, and we cannot wait to see what is up next for these characters. We hope you enjoy our Moon Knight Episode 6 review. Each of the top five films at the box office is expected to finish the weekend with higher figures than what was estimated on Friday. Retaining the top spot for the second weekend in a row, Universal's release of Dreamworks' The Bad Guys made $16.1 million, taking its domestic tally to $44.4 million. In Moon Knight episode 5, “Asylum”, we finally got to know Marc Spector, and the show was all the better for it. While the latest installment of the Marvel series didn't fix all the tonal and structural issues it suffered with in its first four episodes, it did offer its audience an olive branch in the way of essential cohesion that was practically AWOL while we spent time watching Steven Grant's bumbling realization that he was just one identity in a body that had been reformed to house at least two.  Shout Out to Ken The Content Coach for helping me cast my phone to OBS! We're back with another Character Corner episode and this time we're talking about the character Moon Knight. Or should we say the characters Marc Spector/Steven Grant/Jake Lockley. Moon Knight is an interesting character to cover. First appearing in 1975 in Werewolf By Night, its pretty clear that early Moon Knight was Marvel's answer to DC's Batman. There's so many obvious comparisons. Early on in Moon Knight stories, Marc Spector wasn't suffering from mental illness. Rather his three personalities were actually cover aliases for him. Interestingly enough, all his aliases also seem to line up with aspects of Bruce Wayne. You have the Billionaire playboy Steven Grant. The highly skilled mercenary Marc Spector. Then there's the seedy Jake Lockley that is clearly based off of Matches Malone (who first appeared in 1972 in Batman comics). Then there's the Moon Knight concept itself. Dressed in all white (versus the all black of Batman), a hero of the night that looks at himself as the "spirit of vengeance" and taking out those criminals that prey on the weak.  But then Marvel started to put some space between the characters by introducing Khonshu, the Moon God that took Marc Spector has his priest (or fist depending on how you look at it). Instead of some internal drive to make criminals fear him because of the murder of his parents, Spector is driven to fight crime because his God commands it. Or is it that he's just insane? Or both? Later comics definitely show that Khonshu is a very real (and petty and vengeful God). And it's Khonshu that has pretty much driven Marc insane. But it makes for a really interesting character and some very good comics to read (except for the Bendis run. Don't do that to yourselves).  Issues:  Werewolf By Night #32 - First Appearance Bad Moon Rising Moon Knight Epic Collection Moon Knight Volume 1 Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu Marc Spector: Moon Knight Moon Knight: Resurrection Wars #1 - 4 Moon Knight: High Strangeness #1 - 4 Marvel Knights #1 - 15 Moon Knight (2006 - 2009) #1 - 30 Vengeance of Moon Knight Secret Avengers  Issue #19 - First appearance of the Mr. Knight suit Moon Knight (2011 - 2012) #1 - 12 - Bendis (you can skip it) Moon Knight (2014) Marvel Now Issues 1 - 6 (Warren Ellis) Issues 7 -12 (Brian Wood) Issues 13 - 17 (Cullen Bunn) All New, All Different Moon Knight (Jeff Lemire Run) Avengers Vol 8 #33 - 38 - Age of Khonshu Moon Knight (2021 - ) Like what you hear? We're back to cover another Marvel Disney+ show. But this is a first. All the previous Marvel shows, while introducing new characters, have largely revolved around diving into existing characters. Moon Knight however, is the first series based on an entirely new character. And what's even more interesting is that it's not an origin story. What really works with this first episode is that we the audience are in the same position as Oscar Isaac's Steven Grant. We have no idea what's going on just like Steven and we get plopped down into situations just like he does. It's a great way to introduce a character and get the audience to invest. Marvel also continues its trend of bringing the heat when it comes to acting talent. Oscar Isaac always brings it 100% with his characters. It's what makes Fox's Age of Apocalypse such a travesty. How do you have Oscar Isaac playing Apocalypse and don't utilize that to his full potential? In Moon Knight, we get Isaac playing two completely different characters at the same time and it's a Master Class. It also helps that he's playing off of Ethan Hawke also does a great job. Add in F. Murray Abraham as the voice of the irritated and annoyed Khonshu and what's not to love? Listen as Kriss, Ro and Dpalm talk about the first episode. Moon Knight, the 6th Disney+ Marvel series, has arrived! We prepare you for the entire series with a Comic Book primer, and share our thoughts on the first episode, “The Goldfish Problem.” There are so many layers to this character who first appeared in 1975 in the series Werewolf by Night. Plus having so many personalities, Moon Knight is very hard to boil down. But we did it. We gathered a lot of information and tried to focus on the highlights so it wouldn't be overwhelming. Now let's take the night with vengeance and justice and get into Moon Knight!   Premise of Marvel's Disney+ series   The series follows Steven Grant (Oscar Isaac), a gift shop employee at a London museum that is currently showing an Egyptian exhibit. Steven Grant suffers from dissociative identity disorder, and is trying to figure out what is real and what is not, and he is guided along the way from another one of his identities named Marc Spector who is the avatar of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. Along the way Steven Grant must contend with Marc's enemies like Dr. Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke), as they are thrust into a deadly mystery surrounding the powerful gods of Egypt.   Who is Moon Knight as found in the comics from the 80's?   The comics focus on Marc Spector, and Steven Grant is not a lovable loser who works in a gift shop. Marc Spector served as a Marine and briefly as a CIA operative, and is left for dead by fellow mercenary named Bushman in Sudan. Spector is brought before a statue of Khonshu and before he dies, he is suddenly revived and fully healed. He claims Khonshu wants him to be the "moon's knight", redeeming his life of violence by now protecting and avenging the innocent.    On his return to the United States, MARC Spector invests his mercenary profits into becoming the crimefighter "Moon Knight".  Along with his costumed alter ego, he primarily uses three other identities to gain information from different social circles: billionaire businessman Steven Grant, taxicab driver Jake Lockley, and suited consultant Mr. Knight. Sound like a familiar caped crusader? The similarities to Batman are undeniable!   There's more, so please listen by clicking the player above for all his comic book origins, and our thoughts on the first episode!   Where We Will Be   May 25, 2022: 3rd Annual Boonta Eve Cantina! Here's a podcast that can tell the difference between its waking life... and dreams. Yes, folks, as Moon Knight finally makes his dramatic debut on Disney+, this special edition of the Empire Podcast brings you interviews with the folks who brought the MCU's latest hero to life. First, Chris Hewitt welcomes the show's stars -- Moon Knight/Marc Spector/Steven Grant himself, Oscar Isaac; Ethan Hawke, who plays the villainous Arthur Harrow; and May Calamawy, aka Leila -- to our London studio for an interview that is filled with bonkersness, and then he sits down over Zoom with the show's lead director, Mohamed Diab. This isn't a spoiler special, and the interviews are largely spoiler-free, but they do engage with events that take place in the first episode in particular, so perhaps listen to this after you've seen that. Otherwise, there's nothing to fear here but Chris' impression of Steven Grant. Enjoy...?
