In this episode of the Neuroveda Podcast for Complex Health, Gillian Ehrlich, family nurse practitioner certified in Ayurveda and functional medicine, welcomes one of Neuroveda Health's own clinicians, Brianna Cardenas, DMSc, PA-C, ATC, CSC1.Dr. Cardenas is a specialist in Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), hypermobility spectrum disorders, and complex neurologic and immunologic comorbidities, including dysautonomia, mast cell activation syndrome, spinal CSF leaks, craniocervical instability, venous outflow disorders, tethered cord, adhesive arachnoiditis, and related pressure disorders. She sees patients at Neuroveda Health and provides remote consultations worldwide through her company, Healed and Empowered.Together, Gillian and Brianna explore one of the most complex and often misunderstood areas of connective tissue disease: how to differentiate common neurologic conditions in EDS and related connective tissue disorders. They discuss why these conditions are so often missed in conventional medicine, how connective tissue impacts the nervous system, and why patients are frequently shuffled between specialties without anyone seeing the full picture. This conversation covers the role of connective tissue, fascia, and the extracellular matrix in neurologic symptoms; how pressure disorders can show up as high pressure, low pressure, or fluctuating “spiky” patterns; why symptoms may worsen with position changes, head turning, lying flat, or being upright; the overlap between craniocervical instability, Eagle syndrome, Chiari-like presentations, CSF leaks, venous congestion, tethered cord, and arachnoiditis; why standard imaging is often inadequate for hypermobile patients; what symptom tracking can reveal; and practical ideas for diagnostic workup and imaging requests that may help patients and clinicians move closer to answers.Dr. Cardenas also shares how her own lived experience with severe chronic illness has shaped her clinical work and deepened her commitment to helping patients who so often fall through the cracks receive rigorous, compassionate, and collaborative care.In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Cardenas serves as an Assistant Professor in the MEDEX Northwest Physician Assistant Program at the University of Washington, where she teaches future physician assistants. She has lectured nationally and internationally on EDS and related comorbid conditions and is one of fewer than 100 certified fascial counterstrain practitioners worldwide. This episode is especially for patients, caregivers, and clinicians trying to make sense of symptoms that do not fit neatly into one specialty. It is an invitation to think more broadly, more collaboratively, and more compassionately about complex chronic illness.*Please note: This podcast is for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for individualized medical care. A podcast cannot replace a one-on-one medical visit, physical exam, or personalized diagnostic workup.

Malpractice insurance is something most PAs and other clinicians assume they understand... until something goes wrong. In this episode, Kat sits down with Christopher Cannell, DMSc, MPAS, MPLC, PA-C, DFAAPA, founder of The APC Consultant, for a clear, practical deep dive into malpractice insurance 101 and the medical-legal realities no one teaches us in PA school or on the job. We break down what malpractice insurance actually covers, the key differences between claims-made and occurrence policies, and why employer-provided coverage may not protect you in the way you think it does. Chris explains common assumptions clinicians make about liability insurance, tail coverage, and personal policies, and where those assumptions can quietly put your license, career, and finances at risk. We also go beyond the policy itself to talk about real-world risk management and walk through an anonymized case study that highlights how communication, documentation, and post-event decisions can dramatically affect outcomes. We explore how legal uncertainty contributes to burnout, defensive medicine, and chronic stress, and why legal literacy is an essential (but overlooked) form of clinician self-care. Whether you're early in your PA career or years into practice, this episode will help you feel more confident, informed, and proactive about protecting yourself in today's increasingly complex healthcare environment. This lady! I'd never met Venee, but I saw a FB reel she'd made about her unicorn job; underneath her words, I sensed she was longing for something more, so I invited her on the podcast to talk about it. She's open and honest about why a perfect job might not be perfect for everyone and how she's discerning her next right step and giving herself permission to honor her gut over her guilt. This is a powerful episode CHOCK FULL of delicious pearls of wisdom, I wrote down 22 key points, but here are the top 10! Just because a job feels like a unicorn for one person doesn't mean it'll be a unicorn job for every person, and just because a job starts out wonderful doesn't mean it'll always be a perfect fit, we change, our needs change, and our jobs change. Pay attention to the pull toward something different and practice tuning out guilt and fear of missing out. If you don't listen to your inner guidance, you might always wonder “what if” about risks, leaps, and opportunities. When you're frustrated or unhappy, look first at yourself and your own narrative. What story are you telling yourself? What are you feeling? When you feel a sense of unease, get quiet, and get yourself away from the noise of everyday life. It's when you get alone you can hear what's really going on. Ask yourself what you're feeling. If you don't sit in it, you'll blame your discontent on other people and things external to you. Validation comes from within, Only you can put that stamp of validation on you. Burnout can look like a candle dimming; everything can look great on paper, but that inner spark is slowly dimming. Every time you ignore that gut instinct, you're ignoring your inner wisdom. What is “Christmas happy” for you? How can you incorporate that into your everyday life? Identify what aligns with your passions. The stories we tell ourselves determine how we move through life, so pay attention to how you script your experience. Challenge it. Look at the opposite. What if you COULD? You can't change the past; just look at what you'll do to better yourself for tomorrow. Focus on this, and know that you don't have all the answers. It's all a learning process, there's no finish line. Raquelle, "Rocky" Akavan did something amazing, but it probably didn't feel all that big at the time. She craved a group of fellow PA moms to talk to, so she created a small Facebook group for PA moms. Little did she know it would eventually grow to 19,000 members only 8 years later and become one of the largest special interest groups of AAPA (the national PA organization). The group is like a professional home filled with friends I talk to and share advice, as well as tips and tricks for surviving motherhood, marriage, and my career. It's become a way of empowering and advocating for our profession by a shared vision and a group of moms who can get $hit done! I wanted to highlight Rocky and let her tell her story of how it all started and what she went through along the way. As she says, it takes a village (and gives credit to her amazing team of PA Moms who work 24/7 to keep the group going). Take home points: If there's something lacking in your and it's not already available, take the brave step and create it! Spend time figuring out your core values, and reassess them periodically, then use them to make any decision. Set aside time with no phones or screens. Everything else can wait. Good leaders have to implement boundaries, which in turn, gives everyone on the team permission to set boundaries. Burnout is multifactorial, for some it's all about their work, but relationships and health also contribute. You are not alone. If you start feeling overwhelmed or burned out, use this as a sign to step back and reevaluate; ask yourself what needs to shift? You're never really stuck; even when it feels like it. There are so many more choices. Stay true to yourself by really spending time getting to know yourself and what's important to you. YOLO: You only live once so ask yourself what would create a life with no regrets and use that as your guide.
