But the truth is, we need God now more than ever and we can’t afford to wait until life is more predictable (because when is it ever, really?). True Fact: The longest book written in the English language is the easy book One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss. Other True Fact: That first fact is untrue, but it's certainly what Kate believed in her heart when she finished reading that book during this recording. While many people remember all too well the title of today's book, its plot (such as it is) remains, for many, a mystery. Kate certainly didn't know what to expect and, to be fair, how could she have? Can anyone truly predict Clark or the Ying or Ned? Sweet sweet Ned? We think not. Show Notes: One image in this book was once parodied when Betsy made a post challenging artists to Re-Seussify Seuss. Which is to say, re-illustrate a Dr. Seuss work in the style of another illustrator. And Nathan Hale (of Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales) decided to take on "yellow teeth guy" (as Kate calls him) in the style of Stephen Gammell. You know. I say this now because in my new I.T. position at work I am doing much more typing as communication than I have ever done in my entire life. What I find interesting is toll it is taking on my hand. Why naming your style can be dangerous for your project - Episode 4 (Season 9 - KEEPING IT REAL)

Get It Right with Undercover Architect

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 15, 2019 29:37

What style is my house? And my preferred taste? Do you find yourself asking this question when renovating or building? Everyone wants to know “What style is my house?” But naming your style can be dangerous and limiting. SHOW NOTES: One of the things I see that’s really prevalent in the world of reality TV and online building and renovating is this desire to name the style you’re seeking for your project (and future home). It’s a common question others will ask you too. “What style are you doing? … Hamptons is SO popular right now!” With names like Scandi, Plantation, Industrial, French Provincial, Coastal, there’s a huge range of descriptions for an apparent choice of style, look, finishes, colours and fabrics. And you’ll see many online renovators and builders teach you to ‘pull together your vision’ … or create your vision board or scrapbook to show others the look you want for your home. They recommend it as a great way to get clear on what you want, and also explain it to others. Whilst I do believe that images are a brilliant way to explain your preferences to those on your team, I have this warning … The names of these styles all have origins in specific times, cultures and locations. And they were created for specific reasons. Sometimes it was related to climate, material availability, building technology and trade skills. Sometimes it was the next-stage development of an existing style. Sometimes it was a complete rejection of the status quo or traditional way of doing things. Sometimes it was socio-economic. When you look back through architectural, design and art history, the style names we’re grabbing and applying to how we want our home to ‘look’, are usually based in meaningful history and motivations at the time. When you seek to name the style of your future home, without truly understanding the historical origins of that style or its specific characteristics, this can be confusing for your project and design team. And you can seriously limit your project as others interpret what you want and don’t want. And if you’re basing your choice of style on a series of images you’ve grabbed from a range of houses that actually aren’t that style at all … well, the confusion continues. Styles aren’t simply names of detailing, fabric and colour choices. I know homeowners feel it works for them to name their style, but what worries me is that it can (because I’ve seen it happen) create inauthentic designs that are a veneer over terrible planning and functionality. It’s also worth understanding that a style name and a vision board is not a brief. A brief is the main communication tool you need for your project - whoever you’re working with, and wherever you’re building or renovating. And some of the best briefs I’ve received don’t ever mention a style. They describe a feeling. Appropriating cultures and styles from elsewhere that don’t have suitability for your local area can cause issues with the performance of your home, and also making it difficult to get planning approval from your local council. More importantly, it means you can miss an incredible opportunity to express YOUR style. A style that is specific to its time, location and climate … and suits you and your family authentically. In this episode, I talk about what are the problems with naming your style, and how to instead think about your wishes for your home so they can actually be delivered by your team. If you want a home that is functional, and feels complete, authentic and whole, then listen to the episode now. This episode is brought to you by my online course “Manage Your Build”. Steven Kane is nearing the end of an incredible run with his very successful post-apocalyptic drama, The Last Ship. But the path to being one of TV's "lucky ones" was anything but smooth. A native of New Jersey, who went to UPenn undergrad, Steven thought he had it made when his USC film school Master's Thesis, a short film entitled Heroic Symphony, garnered awards at film festivals around the country. Not so much. While he wrote plays (his collection of One Act plays, Out of Your Mind, had a successful run in Los Angeles at the GuerriLA Theater) and made his first feature film (The Doghouse, won him Best Director at the NY Indy Film Festival) nothing really moved the needle. And, despite getting early attention from legendary director James Cameron, when he was making Hollywood history with Titanic, Steven was eventually forced to pay his rent making corporate videos for a significant time. But like so many guests of 10,000 "No"s, his ability to frame that "opportunity" planted the seeds, and introduced him to people that he would later use as consultants on The Last Ship. Before this juggernaut, he gained a reputation for delivering quality scripts on many hits shows before landing a long-running gig as a writer and producer on The Closer (for which he received an Edgar Nomination). A chance encounter with an old colleague led to step in a different direction, as a higher-level writer on the hit comedy American Dad as well as writing an episode for cultural icon Larry David's Curb Your Enthusiasm. In 2016, Kane was given the Distinguished Public Service Award, the US Navy's top civilian honor, for The Last Ship. He learned many lessons about leadership and productivity from the Navy, and many more from the hard knocks he's sustained along his journey. And he shares these valuable life lessons with us here.   Show Notes: “One of the things that’s a testament to how things work is that you just don’t give up. If you don’t give up, you can still be here to give your story”, (00:26). “You have to do the hard work to prove to yourself and others that you can actually deliver. Do your homework and groundwork”, (12:25). “It’s easier to say no. Finding people to say yes because they believe you is the hard part, but if you can get past the ‘no’s’ internally as well, you can do great things”, (13:08). “Don’t let the no’s stop you, adapt and find another game plan”, (16:35). “Just take the 10,000 “No”s and file them away and say you’ll see, it’s easier said than done however”, (17:50). “If you have faith in yourself, things will come your way”, (32:53). “Everything is useful even if it feels like it’s awful”, (1:11:09). “My story isn’t that unique, it’s really just a quest of not giving up”, (1:11:38). “Life is long, you may have not become what you thought you’d be or you may be disappointed, but if I were now 25 listening to myself, I'd be inspired by the idea that it’s a journey that takes different paths. As long as you love what you’re doing and stay optimistic and keep your eyes open to opportunities and don’t be afraid to take opportunities when they come your way, great things will come your way”, (1:11:55). “The word NO means I don’t understand you”, (1:13:34).  Show Links: IMDb- https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0437442/ http://the-last-ship.wikia.com/wiki/Steven_Kane Last Ship TV- http://thelastship.tv/category/steven-kane/ More on Steven Kane- http://thelastship.tv/2017/10/08/message-from-the-bridge-steven-kane-interview/ Social Media- Twitter: @mrstevenkane Facebook: Steven Kane If you like what you hear, please Subscribe, leave an iTunes review and spread the word. As a teacher, you must be able to convey your point to who you are speaking with, anticipate their questions and make sure you increase the listening party's overall knowledge of the subject matter. Truth be told, this is how I sell. I sell by educating the client on what they should expect. If the client is already getting those expectations fulfilled, great. They know I am a contender if they ever need me. But what happens mostly is our client starts looking at their water treatment in a different light. A light of “proper” expectations. I am so very pleased to call so many of our clients friends. These friendships grew from meeting (and in many cases exceeding) expectations over and over.  When someone knows they can trust you, they give themselves permission to like you. And we all know we’d rather buy from people they like. This is my story about our guest today. His name is David Vences, a Building Engineer in Atlanta.  David is a super impressive guy. He started at the bottom and has been very successful of working his way up the ladder in Atlanta’s world of Building Engineers. We all have to work with clients. We all have some clients that we have better relationships with than others. So why is that? Join us today as David and I discuss how we started and how we have arrived to where we are today. More about David V.  David Vences is commercial office building Portfolio Chief Engineer for Lincoln Properties. David supervises and manages multiple engineers and maintenance mechanics in 8 commercial class A buildings totaling slightly over 1 million rentable sq. ft. of office building in Alpharetta. David Vences has served as BOMA BTO Vice Chair in 2016, BOMA BTO Chair in 2017, BOMA BTO Chair in 2018, and has served in several BOMA task forces including the BE101 and the TOBY task force. David enjoys spending time with his wife Jennifer and daughter Sofia, going to the gym, and his newest hobby has been starting a podcast on engineering called “New Generation Engineering”.   My heart skipped a beat when this little 6 year-old girl said to me, "You look really cute with your one hand." The only thing making this moment better was that it was in an Aikido dojo during a training seminar I was attending in San Diego, California. I was on the mat waiting for the next class to start when I noticed this little 6 year-old girl looking at me and my one-handedness. So I smiled and waved to her with my "short side" and she smiled back. After a bit of quality and sincere non-verbal communication with her, the next Aikido class started. When the class was over her mother brought her to meet me. After the introduction, the mother asked me to watch her daughter for a few minutes. As this young child and I were "hanging out" she said one of the most beautiful and sweetest things any child has ever said to me. This podcast is about that moment. Thanks for listening! I invite you to share this podcast, offer a comment, or leave some feedback. Show Notes: One of the sweetest things any child has ever said to me about having one hand. On today's show Lawrence and I discuss why group meetings can be such time wasters, the importance of one-one-ones and lawrence's book. Over the last 18 years, Lawrence Krubner  has been the technical co-founder of 3 different startups that he has led to success. He has also seen millions of dollars wasted on poorly run projects that he have had to turn around and save. Turning around a failing project can go smoothly, so long as everyone on the team can be completely honest about why a project was failing up to that point. He is a proponent of the "train fast, fire fast, fail fast, iterate fast" philosophy -- a team should improve itself as much as possible, through training or replacement, and thereby maximize the speed with which it delivers products. Japanese labor law is very different from what is standard in the US or Europe, and more than a few foreigners have made simple mistakes that have cost them their jobs or their entire companies. Terrie Lloyd has started more than a dozen companies in Japan over the past 30 years and has hired hundreds of people here. Today Terrie shares a number of personal stories and also offers a lot of practical advice for westerners in Japan who need to hire, manage and retain Japanese staff, either for their own startup or as part of a larger organization. Of course, we talk about Japan Travel, Terrie’s latest venture, but we also cover the state of Japanese startups in general, how to best raise money from Japanese VCs, and we go over a few real-world examples of how you can protect yourself when things go horribly, horribly wrong. It’s an interesting discussion, and I think you’ll enjoy it. Show Notes One mistake all founders need to avoid when building a platform business Why Japanese VCs have a blind spot to the travel industry How you know when to bootstrap and when to raise funds Why loyalty points are stronger than blockchain Why Japanese companies are afraid of open data The best way to recruit and manage Japanese staff How to find a startup niche as a foreigner in Japan How to get rid of problem employees without getting sued What you need to watch out for when getting legal advice in Japan Links from the Founder Check out Japan Travel Terrie's Take is a weekly newsletter that is definately worth reading Japanese Labor Law for startup founders A general overview of Japanese Labor Law JETRO's Guide to Japanese Labor Law Some good advice to startup founders from a Japanese Lawyer [shareaholic app="share_buttons" id="7994466"] Leave a comment Transcript Welcome to Disrupting Japan, straight talk from Japan's most successful entrepreneurs. I'm Tim Romero and thanks for joining me. Okay, I want to explain in advance, this one is going to be a little long, but believe me, you are going to be glad you spent the time, and you know, you might even find yourself listening to this particular episode a couple of times. There's so much good stuff coming. Terrie Lloyd has started more than a dozen companies in Japan and he has hired hundreds of people over the past 30 years. Now, Terrie and I have known each other for a long time. In fact, when I was first starting out in Japan, I did some programming for one of his companies back in the 90s. I wrote for one of his magazines in the early 2000s, and you know, I'm not sure what took me so long to invite him to sit down and talk, but I'm glad I finally did. Of course, we talked about Japan Travel, Terrie's latest startup, but our conversation also turns into a brutally practical guide for any foreigner who wants to run a business in Japan. I will warn you in advance, our conversation lacks most of the startup hype and pep talking most founders exude, but you're about to hear some fantastic real-world advice about how foreigners can hire, manage, and occasionally even fire Japanese staff. Japanese labor law is well, different than it is in the US or Europe, and more than a few foreigners have made simple mistakes in this area that ended up killing their companies. Terrie has some great advice both on how to attract and to keep Japanese talent, and a few real-world examples of how you can protect yourself when things go horribly, horribly wrong. But you know, Terrie tells that story much better than I can, so let's get right to the interview. [pro_ad_display_adzone id="1404" info_text="Sponsored by" font_color="grey" ] [Interview] Tim: So I'm sitting here with Terrie Lloyd, the founder and CEO of Japan Travel and LINC Media, and BiOS and quite a few other companies, so thanks for sitting down with me. Terrie: It's my pleasure. Tim: Yes, I'm amazed how long it's taken us to get around to ...

This is a very old photo of Kichesippi Beer Company. Kichesippi Beer Company just celebrated their 6th Anniversary! Katy (@klwatts) and April (@AThibert) sat down with Paul Meek (@paulmeek613), Co-Owner of Kichesippi Beer Company and chatted about his experiences in beer. Show Notes: One of Paul's first craft beer experiences was Granite Brewery in Halifax (yes, there is a Granite Brewery in Toronto that was opened by a sibling of the original Halifax brewery). The Alexander Keith's 'tourism' brewery is the original brewery where actors take you through a tour in period costumes and do a historical reenactment - it's actually pretty fun. The cans versus bottles debate (cans are better). Why do people choose to move to Ottawa? Kelly, Paul's wife (and Co-Owner of Kichesippi Beer Company) was diagnosed with mitochondrial myopathy and now uses an electric wheelchair. Ottawa loves snow - RIGHT?! Thank you McClelland Premium Imports and Paul for introducing me to Erdinger and so many other yummy beers. You should pour your weisse beers a certain beer - here's how! Go buy one and try it. Do you remember Heritage Brewing and their brands (Sgt Major's, Corporal Punishment..) Many other breweries make craft sodas - Propeller, Nickel Brook There were many great parties had at the brewery and it sounds like there will be more in the future! The famous LCBO Store 10 (Summerhill) fit with tasting bar and growler station.
