If you’ve lived in New Orleans for any length of time, you know we love to rebuild. We rebuilt the levees. We rebuilt the schools. We rebuilt the Superdome. After every storm, we rebuild thousands of roofs and hundreds of homes. After Hurricane Katrina, a small group of New Orleanians decided that the way they could make a contribution toward saving the city was to help build companies. They revived a small volunteer-run organization called Social Entrepreneurs of New Orleans. Three years later they turned it into a registered non-profit and gave it a new name. They called it, “Propeller.” The idea was - Find people in New Orleans who had identified a problem in their community and were trying to build a business or nonprofit to fix it. Get these folks in a room. Teach them how to read a balance sheet, how to apply for a grant, how to write a marketing plan, how to hire a bookkeeper. Then turn them loose. It worked. Today, Propeller is a business accelerator and co-working space that has seen more than 300 ventures go through its program. Those companies have generated over $290 million in revenue and external financing, and they’ve created more than 485 full and part-time jobs in the city. The CEO of Propeller is Jessica Allen. If you happened to watch HGTV in 2024, you may have caught a series called “Bargain Block: New Orleans.” It was a New Orleans spinoff of HGTV’s Detroit-based home renovation show. The two hosts had design ambitions. The person on the show who turned those ambitions into actual buildings, walls, and floors was a New Orleans general contractor named Charles Aponza. Charles came to New Orleans in 2012 to teach in the Recovery School District. He bought a fixer-upper, restored it himself, and then friends started asking him to help with their houses. In 2015 he turned his home building skills into a business - Brighter Horizons Construction. Charles and Brighter Horizons came up through Propeller’s Impact Accelerator. Then there’s the other side of what comes out of Propeller. A nonprofit. In 2014, Kimberly Novod and her husband Aaron were expecting their first child. Their son Saul was born prematurely at 28 weeks. He spent 20 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. He died there. Kimberly has said publicly that the question she was left with was, “What do I do with all the love?” Her answer was Saul’s Light – a New Orleans nonprofit she founded to support NICU families and bereaved families across Louisiana. Today, Saul’s Light serves around 200 Louisiana families a year.Beyond emotional support, they provide financial assistance. And as an advocacy group, Saul’s Light has produced two Louisiana state laws – a tax credit for stillborn children, and a requirement that health insurance, including Medicaid, cover prescription human milk. There’s a tendency, when we talk about business in New Orleans, to default to conversations about tourism, hospitality, Jazz Fest, Mardi Gras… The fun stuff. We don’t hear so much about the social justice economy: people who are building businesses and organizations to fix things that are broken. At Propeller they put that work at the center of their existence. Charles came up through Propeller and grew a construction business that builds homes New Orleanians can actually afford. Kimberly came up through Propeller and built an organization that helps 200 families a year go through one of the hardest things a person can experience. As in music, sometimes in business the silence is as powerful as the conversation. Out to Lunch was recorded live over lunch at Columns in Uptown New Orleans. Well now our boy is making his directorial debut by adapting his fable for all ages to the screen. John does more than wear an interesting hat in this movie we can tell ya that!

When JFK asked Dwight Eisenhower why the Normandy invasion was a success, Eisenhower replied, "Because we had better meteorologists than the Germans." That's the crux of the new WWII historical drama, "Pressure." In this taut movie, Andrew Scott plays a brilliant British meteorologist who butted heads with Eisenhower, played by Brendan Fraser, over the timing of the D-Day invasion. “Pressure” is an involving look at the herculean behind-the-scenes efforts of unsung heroes. Can the popularity of standup comic Nate Bargatze translate to the big screen? If the juvenile family comedy "The Breadwinner" is any indication, the answer is...we'll see. Bargatze takes on a Mr. Mom-type role as an inept dad left temporarily in care of the household. There are more laughs in five minutes of Bargatze's standup routines than in this entire movie. The new thriller "Tuner" is gimmicky, but the gimmicks work. Leo Woodall plays Niki, a piano tuner with super-sensitive hearing. Criminals figure out how to manipulate Niki into using his talents to crack safes. Well-acted, smart and involving, "Tuner" is a surprisingly gripping sleeper. The Apple TV movie "Propeller One-Way Night Coach" marks the directorial debut of actor and aviation enthusiast John Travolta. The story is based on a children's book Travolta wrote in 1997 about a young boy on his first airplane trip from New York to Hollywood on a TWA Constellation in the 1960s. The film was partially shot in KC as the actual Connie is, of course, housed in KC alongside the TWA museum. The lightweight story tends to drift off into the ether, but it's a harmless bit of travel nostalgia.

Ep. 396: Eric Hynes on Cannes 2026: Club Kid, The Beloved (El Ser Querido), Clarissa, Propeller One-Way Night Coach Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. With the 2026 Cannes Film Festival in full effect, I sat down again with Eric Hynes, critic and director of film curation and programming at the Jacob Burns Film Center. First we discussed two very different Competition titles about parent-child entanglements: Club Kid (directed, written by, and starring Jordan Firstman) and The Beloved (aka El Ser Querido, directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, starring Javier Bardem and Victoria Luengo). Then we exchanged films that only one of us had seen: Clarissa, from Directors' Fortnight, a Mrs. Dalloway adaptation directed by Arie & Chuko Esiri; and then John Travolta's directorial debut, Propeller One-Way Night Coach.
You know the story. The plane. The propeller. The loss. But surviving is only the beginning. And what comes after is where Lauren Scruggs Kennedy's real story starts. In one of the most raw and deeply human conversations this show has ever had, Lauren sits down to talk about what it actually looks like to rebuild after trauma. The moment in a hospital bathroom, half her head shaved, where reality finally hit. The lies she told herself to cope, and the painstaking work of dismantling them one by one.But this episode goes far beyond the accident. Lauren and KB dig into the nervous system science behind healing - co-regulation, conscious parenting, and how the emotional state you carry as a parent directly shapes your child's sense of safety. Plus, the unexpected role Giuliana Rancic played in bringing Lauren and Jason Kennedy together. You'll walk away with a deeper understanding of:Why the stories we tell ourselves after trauma are often the most dangerous part of healingWhat co-regulation actually means and why it matters for your familyHow identity can be rebuilt, and why it's never as fixed as we thinkHealing is not linear. Identity is not fixed. And sometimes it takes a propeller, a hospital room, and a really good therapist to find the voice you were always meant to use.If this episode moved you, share it with someone who needs it. In this episode of Black Men Speak, we sit down with Sylvester K. Johnson, Senior Capital Access Manager of Propeller, to unpack the real money moves Black entrepreneurs must master to build businesses that last. Sylvester brings a grounded, no-nonsense perspective on financial literacy — breaking down why so many entrepreneurs struggle not because they lack hustle, but because they lack financial systems, strategy, and clarity. From managing cash flow and understanding the true cost of running a business, to separating personal and business finances, this conversation pulls back the curtain on the financial blind spots that quietly derail growth. Together, we explore how Propeller is helping entrepreneurs move from reactive decision-making to intentional financial leadership, and why mastering your numbers is about more than profit — it's about freedom, sustainability, and legacy. This episode is a must-listen for any brother who's tired of grinding without clarity and ready to make smarter, more strategic money moves.
In a twist of events, the FAA added not only DJI and Autel to the FCC-covered list, but also every drone produced in a foreign country, sending shockwaves throughout the industry. The FCC also added UAS Critical components produced in a foreign country to the covered list, including some that don't require FCC approval. A UAS Critical component is defined as Data transmission devices, Communications systems, Flight controllers, Ground control stations and UAS controllers, Navigation systems, Sensors and Cameras, Batteries and Battery Management Systems, and Motors. Before we go any further, I want to reassure you that YES, if you are a civilian flying your drone, you can still buy existing models of your favorite brand, foreign or not, while supplies last. No, your drone is not bricked. Only future models are affected. Being on the FCC Covered List means that the company cannot import, market, and sell NEW products in the United States. The FCC memo does mention a process by which the Department of Defense or the Department of Homeland Security can make a specific determination that a given UAS does not pose a risk. At the moment, the process to do that is unclear. The news came through a 9-page memo in which the FCC explains that they bypassed the audit requirement that we have been talking about for a year now: "Although section 1709 requires a determination by an “appropriate national security agency,” rather than an Executive Branch interagency body, this determination satisfies the law because several appropriate national security agencies concurred in this determination." It is unclear who was part of the meeting but they indeed determined that "UAS produced in a foreign country pose an unacceptable risk to the national security of the United States and to the safety and security of U.S. persons and should be included on the FCC's Covered List"They also provide "supporting evidence" as to what the national security threat is, including the fact that "UAS are also playing a critical enabling role on the battlefield in many modern conflicts. In Ukraine and Israel-Gaza, low-cost commercial UAS inflict extensive damage and have caused significant loss of life." and that "Drug Cartels are also reportedly using foreign-produced UAS to smuggle drugs into the United States and carry out attacks." I'm going to read a long paragraph here from the document but I think it' important for you to understand why you can't buy a new DJI drone model to fly with your kid at the park or to photograph a house for a realtor:"Permitting UAS critical components from foreign countries into the United States undermines the resiliency of our UAS industrial base, increases the risk to our national airspace, and creates a potential for large-scale attacks during large gatherings. Even when marketed as “commercial” or “recreational,” certain legal regimes in foreign countries can compel entities to provide real‑time telemetry, imagery, and location data above U.S. soil, or to change the UAS behavior via remote software updates. This poses clear risks that foreign countries could leverage UAS produced with critical components made in a foreign country to engage in intelligence collection, acts of terrorism, attacks on critical infrastructure in the U.S. homeland, or massive supply chain disruption." I'm going to repeat that this decision does not affect existing drones models. If you are working on federally funded projects, you likely may not be able to use a drone or brand that's on the covered list, even if it's an existing drone. It appears blue UAS and those on already approved DOD lists can still be flown.

On this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY, Feliks Banel presents an archival interview with the late Gene Casey from November 2015. It was late on the snowy night of November 17, 1955 when an aging DC-4 full of soldiers on their way home from Korea took off from Boeing Field in Seattle. Within minutes, the plane crashed and burned in a residential neighborhood in the community of Burien, Washington. Twenty-eight of the 74 people on board died in the crash. Propeller maintenance errors were later blamed. In 2015, Feliks Banel spoke with one of the survivors – a man named Gene Casey, who in 1955 was a 19-year-old soldier from Chicago. Though he was badly burned and had other serious injuries, Gene Casey helped another fellow soldier escape from the burning wreckage. Casey was promised a medal for his actions, but never received anything. Mr. Casey passed away in 2023 on the 68th anniversary of the crash. He was 87 years old. Feliks had tried to get the Defense Department to award Mr. Casey a medal, and reached out to officials in his home state of Florida and in Washington, DC – but he was not successful. Much of it hinged on finding the fellow soldier who Casey had helped rescue from the crash. Feliks believes he identified that soldier – but the man is long deceased, and his living relatives have never responded to multiple phone calls and emails. We've posted photos and more information about Gene Casey at the Cascade of History Facebook page. Aaron Steffey is the co-founder and co-CEO of Propeller, an online platform that enables insurance agents and brokers to issue surety bonds instantly — without the lengthy paperwork or back-and-forth typically involved in bonding. Aaron was an insurance agent, and his co-founder cousin, Chris, was a surety bond underwriter before 2019, when they set out to revolutionize the way surety bonds are bought and sold. They initially bootstrapped with a software development partner who accepted equity instead of fees. Their first version drastically simplified the process of buying and selling surety bonds in the digital world, allowing them to grow quickly. They raised $7 million in SAFE notes from strategic partners to accelerate growth in 2021 and grow to nearly $20 million in revenue. They sold 100% of the company to Arch Capital in a strategic acquisition in early 2024. In this episode, Aaron also talks about: How this sleepy, paper-based market changed quickly in COVID Why they raised growth funding from strategic investors and not VCs Why they sold the company and are still leading the business after the sale Quote from Aaron Steffey, co-founder and co-CEO of Propeller “My biggest advice for startup founders is simply just that endurance wins. It's the whole thing of getting back up after you're knocked down, like everyone says. I had to live that so many times. So many No's when it came to our first carrier pulling out. No, I don't want to invest. No, I don't want to use your surety product. “There were so many times when I wanted to give up. And the same with my cousin. Had we not founded the company together, I don't know that we would have continued because there were probably times when I would have given up. “As long as both of us weren't on the floor, one of us would just pick the other up when the other person usually was more sane, and we dragged each other along. “A successful founder needs to have a pretty high pain tolerance and endurance to succeed. You just have to keep pushing forward. It just sounds so cliche, but that's what it was for us.” Links Aaron Steffey on LinkedIn Propeller on LinkedIn Propeller website Arch Capital website The Practical Founders Podcast Tune into the Practical Founders Podcast for weekly in-depth interviews with founders who have built valuable software companies without big funding. Welcome to the Part Time Pilot Audio Ground School VIP Podcast! This podcast takes our free podcast to a whole new level by providing students with every single lesson included in the Part Time Pilot Private Pilot & IFR Ground Schools without a single Ad! On top of that, VIP podcast students get BONUS episodes like Mock Checkrides, Checkride Prep, Expert Interviews and more! The #1 reason student pilots never end up becoming a private pilot is NOT due to money. The real reason is actually deeper than that. Yes, flight training is expensive. But every student pilot knows this and budgets for it when they decide to do it. The actual #1 reason a student pilot fails is because they do not have a good, fundamental understanding of the private pilot knowledge they are meant to learn in ground school. You see when a student does not have a good grasp of this knowledge they get to a point in their flight training where their mind just can't keep up. They start making mistakes and having to redo lessons. And THAT is when it starts getting too expensive. This audio ground school is meant for the modern day student pilot... aka the part time student pilot. Let's face it, the majority of us have full time responsibilities on top of flight training. Whether it is a job, kids, family, school, etc. we all keep ourselves busy with the things that are important to us. And with today's economy we have to maintain that job just to pay for the training. The modern day student pilot is busy, on the go and always trying to find time throughout his or her day to stay up on their studies. The audio ground school allows them to consume high quality content while walking, running, working out, sitting in traffic, traveling, or even just a break from the boring FAR/AIM or ground school lecture. Did I meant high quality content? The audio ground school is taken straight out of the 5-star rated Part Time Pilot Online Ground School that has had over 2000 students take and pass their Private Pilot & IFR exams with only 2 total students failing the written. That's a 99.9% success rate! And the 2 that failed? We refunded their cost of ground school and helped them pass on their second attempt. We do this by keeping ground school engaging, fun, light and consumable. We have written lessons, videos, audio lessons, live video lessons, community chats, quizzes, practice tests, flash cards, study guides, eBooks and much more. Part Time Pilot was created to be a breath of fresh air for student pilots. To be that flight training provider that looks out for them and their needs. So that is just what we are doing with this podcast. Private Pilot - Section 2 - Lesson #14: In this lesson, we finish up Section 2 of the Online Ground School on Operations of Aircraft Systems. Woohoo!!! We get through a lot in this one. We talk about Carburetor Heat (how it works, when to use it and it's dangers), Propellers (including fixed pitch and variable pitch), Antennas, ELT (its operation and requirements) and Landing Gear. The ZENERGY Podcast: Climate Leadership, Finance and Technology
To stave off the worst effects of the climate crisis we must leverage our greatest ally, the ocean. To do so with the speed needed to meet this moment, we need to build companies—with repeatable, scalable business models—that can achieve global impact. This is our collective challenge, and our great opportunity. Dr. Julie Pullen is an oceanographer and meteorologist focused on climate resilience, earth system prediction, AI, and climate tech. She is currently a founding partner and Chief Scientist at Propeller Ventures, an ocean climate solutions VC fund, and previously served on the leadership team at Jupiter Intelligence, a climate risk analytics startup. Her academic career includes a decade as an ocean engineering professor at Stevens Institute of Technology, a joint appointment with the Department of Energy, and a Fulbright Visiting Professorship in the Philippines. She also has a background as a Navy oceanographer and has held fellowships at Stanford and the Department of Homeland Security. Dr. Pullen is a member of the U.S. Climate Security Roundtable, served on the National Academy of Sciences committee for the National Climate Assessments, and co-authored a chapter of the New York City Panel on Climate Change report. She has held leadership roles in both the American Meteorological Society and The Oceanography Society.
