The last instalment of the year arrives from the hands of Furtherset, the musical project of artist and musician Tommaso Pandolfi, with a mix especially suited for the melancholic nights of December. With Furtherset, the artist has defined his personal sound, mainly composed of layers of timbre-modulated sounds and dense rhythmic geometric passages converging towards a single harmonic plane. His music touches on ambient, modern classical and rave, building on his approach to composition with shifting modulations, synthetic clusters and sampling alongside rhythmic and embracing harmonies. Furthersetmentions that the project, which began in 2011, is envisaged as formal research that follows a path towards saturation and layering but is always capable of generating voids in which the listener can take their place and fill them according to their own focus. Furtherset has released several EPs and two albums with the record label OUS, with whom he's signed with. His most recent one, The Infinite Hour, released in October, puts together all the artist's compositional interests over the years. Six compositions resemble the laboured breathing of one who mourns a disappearance and fears oblivion. The album was created between 2020 and 2022, in a slow process of writing and continuous refinement parallel to the previous EP, Auras. The compositions found their final form during the mixing process carried out together with Bienoise. They were later named based on references to authors who influenced and are dear to Furtherset: Amelia Rosselli, Vladimir Chlebnikov, Hubert Damisch, Dante Alighieri. Furtherset mentions that when preparing mixes, he tries to create listening environments with moments of extreme stillness or sudden changes, but always having the latter have their own general organicity: I also fixate on certain artists, such as Simon Fisher Turner, whom I now propose in every mix. In this case, I added Michèle Bokanowski to my fixations. I found pleasant similarities between Moritz Von Oswald's latest work and Ligeti's. Everything then begins and ends with two voices: with Patti Smith's words and Glenn Gould's whispers over Bach. I look for emotion in the music I listen to. Annie Hogan  in conversation with David Eastaugh https://annihogan.co.uk/ https://annihogan.bandcamp.com/ Annie Hogan studied piano before attending Leeds University in 1979 to study politics. It was while in Leeds she met Marc Almond and Dave Ball at a local music venue. In 1980, Hogan took a year out and began DJing and promoting in local clubs. Some of her first bookings were bands like Soft Cell and the Human League. Later in London, she met Matt Johnson from the The who introduced her to Simon Fisher Turner who she began recording with on an album titled Deux Filles. It was this recording that began her working relationship with Almond, after he had heard Hogan playing on the album. Almond then asked her to collaborate on his solo material. Her first ever live concert was performing with an early line up of Marc and the Mambas at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. The line up consisted of Hogan, Almond and Matt Johnson.

In The Past: Garage Rock Podcast

This week, we tell tall tales about one of the all-time greats - 1965's "Liar Liar" by The Castaways (1:30). A song  with rolling organ that opens up with a snare crack, released in the same month as "Like A Rolling Stone"... but this one's way better because of the weird falsetto , the deadpan verses, surf drums, a wild scream and the newly-rediscovered SENSATION NOTE! How do they fit in so much greatness under two minutes?  In 1966, SoCal's Mustangs sped through the song in even less time (1:03:49). The bass in this proto-new wave version is rubbery, and the guitar departure sounds super cool. Perfect for go-go dancing! What's next but to slow the sucker down? This is what Spain's Los Iberos dared to do in '69 (1:21:30). They add horns, xtra percussion and piano and somehow stay true to the original. Finally, in the dark days of 1986, Simon Fisher-Turner, also known as The King of Luxembourg made an even wilder arrangement (1:32:55). There's so many elements here that it reminds us of the studio scene in Smashing Time, a reference the actor/composer King would get. They're all great - no cap!!

Next in our mixtape series comes with Prairie, the project of multi-instrumentalist and producer Marc Jacobs who has prepared a mix to submerge our minds into a semi-awake state, where senses are heightened and we experience sound and reality in a different way. Jacobs, with his Prairie output, has recently published a new album in Denovali Records "And the Bird Said: Cut Me Open and Sing Me", his second release on the experimental German label. With a sound that some have acquainted to a space between Bohren & der Club of Gore and Sunn O))), his releases are infused of a vivid cinematographic narrative. Sonic landscapes provided by layers of synths and instruments that remind us of the passing of time and the persistence of memory. "And the bird said", Jacobs says, "was inspired by the silence of the birds, the tone between a mother and her daughter, the Sandsnipe twins, constant wailing sirens... the memory of a Vangelis track". Composed in several locations from urban in the city, or in his studio Les Lacs and in the mountains of the French Cévennes, the producer integrates his various recording locations into his sound design, creating this ample and revealing sound, resembling the sights of vast fields in the early morning hours, when life is awaking surrounded by a layer of unknown mystery yet to be unveiled. Jacobs also works as a music consultant and as a curator of experimental and electronic music for various venues, events and festivals, among which the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels (Bozar) and he is also the founder of Le Bureau Electronique, a platform dedicated to the promotion of leftfield music and arts in Belgium. This mixtape consists of various approaches to sound and music, where the artist has combined the different forms of production of the tracks in order to create a feeling of a narcotic or hypnagogic state: "It is a state I particularly enjoy, it enables surprising auditory connections and stimulates the imagination. I have chosen the tracks according to the connections they created with one another, like a cadavre-exquis – or how you can fall into a cascade of images or ideas just before you start dreaming". Tracklist (in order of appearance) Plastikman, Robert Ashley, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Mt Gemini, Aymeric de Tapol, Francisco Lopez, Simon Fisher Turner, Lionel Marchetti, Kate Carr, Lawrence English, Niedowierzanie, Ernest Hoood

I'm on the receiving end of a lot of interesting PR blasts, including those from Mute Records. I received a note about A Quiet Corner In Time, a collaboration between sound artist Simon Fisher Turner and ceramicist Edmund de Waal. This was a curious enough project 'statement' that I had to check it out - and I was charmed. It's a beautiful work with surprising detail, and I ended up reaching out to Mute for an interview with Simon. Talking with Simon Fisher Turner was a breeze - he's such a pleasant guy, and has so many stories. Just talking about the sound collection for this new album, with recording trips to Vienna and LA, in-studio sessions with Edmund de Waal's ceramics, and the process of creating the whole sonic fiber of the release - it was all just fascinating. But I also got a chance to talk with Simon a bit about his background, his escape from pop music, and his continued obsession with sound; it all worked its way into a organic whole. Then when we started to talk about live performance, it was clear that he approached that in the same way. Of course! There are so many things that Simon is doing that I would love to share. First, the new release with de Waal - A Quiet Corner In Time - can be experienced here: http://mute.com/mute/simon-fisher-turner-and-edmund-de-waal-breaking-emptiness. Simon also has many other musical releases available - on Mute, Solielmoon and others... a Google search will reveal all. Finally, though, I want to point you to his Guerrilla Audio podcast (https://touch33.net/guerrillaaudio), which gives you some great examples of his collection process. So very charming. Enjoy!

This week Libby Purves is joined by Simon Fisher Turner, Maggi Hambling, Sheila Steafel and Rumer. Composer Simon Fisher Turner is a former child actor and teenage pop idol. He has written a new score for the documentary The Great White Silence (1924) which is a record of Captain Scott's last Polar expedition (1910 -1912). The world premiere screening, newly restored by the BFI National Archive, is one of the highlights of the 54th BFI London Film Festival. Maggi Hambling is one of Britain's most celebrated artists. Since the unveiling in 2003, her Scallop sculpture on Aldeburgh Beach in Suffolk has never been far from controversy. In her book, 'The Aldeburgh Scallop' she traces her love of the sea back to her earliest childhood and records how this lifelong passion has fired her work, culminating in the Scallop sculpture. 'The Aldeburgh Scallop' is published by Full Circle Editions. Actress Sheila Steafel grew up in apartheid-torn South Africa during the thirties and forties before coming to London aged seventeen to study drama. She built up a reputation as an accomplished comedy actress, appearing in numerous popular television series including the Frost Report but she's possibly best known as 'Miss Popsy Wopsy' in the BBC's old time music hall, The Good Old Days. Her autobiography 'When Harry Met Sheila' is published by Apex Publishing. Rumer is a Pakistan-born singer-songwriter, brought up in the New Forest. After a decade of trying to make it in the music business she has finally being recognised by such luminaries as Elton John and Burt Bacharach and A-listed by Radio 2. Her new single, 'Aretha' is out now and she is performing at the Radio 2 Electric Proms at the Roundhouse.
