Has anyone ever seen the Christmas classic, The Santa Clause? It's one of our family's favorite go-to movies during the Christmas season and one of the parts of the movie that gets my kids to giggle every time is the part where Tim Allen is interrogated and asked, very firmly I might add, what his name is. The interrogator is looking for him to say Scot Calvin, but his response instead…Kris Kringle, Sinterklass, Pere Noel, Babbo Natale, Pierse Nicole, Topo Gigio…which, by the way, is an Italian mouse, but that's not the point. The focus of today's episode is not on the many names of Santa, but the big question mark around the first name of his wife, Mrs. Claus. What is her first name? Does she have a first name? And why don't we know more? Well, let's find out, Merry Christmas, everyone. This is the Missing Chapter. Twas the week before Christmas and all through the Shoe-Dio, AG and Chris discussed something beautiful. Three Holiday tales from folklore are told, but not before someone packs a tight bowl. Look we get it, the Holidays are stressful, even more reason to take a little time for yourself, bake yourself like a warm oatmeal raisin cookie (yes they're the superior cookie) and tuck in with us for some Holiday Folklore that makes Santa look like a basic bitch. Sinterklass and the questionable Black Pete or Gryla and the Yule Lads, we've got something for everyone.

Cosmic Jesus! Today Pastor Michael is talking about a bishop from the fourth century, Nicholas. Nicholas lived in Myra, a city in western Turkey, then a Greek territory. Nicholas came from a wealthy family and loved to help others. He did so secretly, to not draw attention to himself. He heard about one family that had a big need and he wanted to ensure that they wouldn't know that it was him assisting them. So, he actually went on to their roof and dropped a bag of gold down their chimney. As luck would have it, a member of the household had hung some stockings on the fireplace to dry. The gold bounced into the stocking! Pretty cool, Nicholas! Eventually people found out that Nicholas was secretly helping people and the story of “Saint” Nicholas spread far and wide. It inspired a lot of generosity and a lot of giving. The Dutch particularly loved St. Nicholas and called him “Sinterklass”. When Dutch immigrants came to America, they brought the story of Sinterklass and it became modified a bit to the story of Santa Claus! Christmas isn't just about Santa, it's also about Jesus. And Christmas Jesus is likely everyone's "favorite" Jesus. But Jesus is on another level. Not very far from where Nicholas grew up is Colossae. Paul wrote a letter to the Colossians, the book of Colossians in the New Testament. In this letter, Paul explained to them that Jesus was much, much more than “Christmas” Jesus. It was not the boy Jesus, the Messiah Jesus, or even the resurrected Jesus. It is literally, “Cosmic” Jesus! Jesus is more than one thing; he transcends eternity! Following the Bible verses listed below, Jesus is the image of the invisible God. God is not a material being, He is a Spirit. Jesus is God! Saint Nicholas comes back in to the story now at the First Counsel of Nicaea (founded by Constantine the Great), where they are wrangling with the subject of Jesus and God being one, incarnate. This study is also called the study of the Godhead in Christianity. They had studied the Epistle to the Colossians and were firmly convinced that Jesus and God are the one and the same. Now, they had a dissenter amongst themselves, Arius, who did not believe in Trinitarianism, the belief that God is one God in three co-equal, co-eternal and consubstantial persons: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Arius taught that Jesus was a created being, that He was not fully divine, but that He was a really, really good guy that does point us to God. However, this didn't then, nor now, jibe with the Bible. No one was more upset on that than Nicholas. He listened and listed and was getting madder and madder when Saint Nicholas walked across the room and punched Arius right in his mouth! Saint Nicholas knew the Cosmic Jesus, the one and eternal God. He wasn't created but is the Creator of all things! Today's verses can be found in Colossians 1: 15-20, John 1: 1-18, John 10:30 and John 14:9. Merry Christmas, everyone!

jQuery(document).ready(function(){ cab.clickify(); }); Original Podcast with clickable words https://tinyurl.com/ydygs43n The Red Man. An Fear Dearg. Isn't it strange how habits are established and spread? Nach ait mar a bhunaítear agus mar a scaiptear nósanna? It is now accepted that it was the Irish who brought the festival of November to the United States and that it was made into Halloween with its pumpkins and ghosts and colored skeletons. Tá glacadh leis anois gurb iad Gaeil Éireann a thug féile na Samhna chun na Stát Aontaithe agus gur déanadh Halloween as lena puimcíní agus lena taibhsí agus lena cnámharlaigh dhaite. Similarly it was the Dutch on their flight who brought Sinterklass across the sea to New York and it has expanded throughout the world since then, with the help of Coca Cola and the power of money. Ar an gcuma chéanna b'iad na Dúitsigh ar a dteitheadh dóibh a thug Sinterklass trasna na farraige go dtí Nua Eabhrac agus tá leathnaithe ar fud an tsaoil ó shin, le cabhair ó Choca Cola agus cumhacht an airgid. It was not that there were not many traditions around the world associated with some old crocodiles distributing goodies and gifts at the turn of the year, but he was not a fat man fed in his Cork attire wandering around an air chariot powered by reindeer speaking ho- it was a hose. Ní hé nach raibh traidisiúin éagsúla ar fud críocha fairsinge an domhain a bhain le seanchrúnca éigin a dháil maitheas agus bronntanais tráth chasadh na bliana, ach níorbh aon fhear ramhar beathaithe é ina fheisteas Chorcaí ag gabháil timpeall ar charbad aeir faoi chumhacht réinfhianna ag labhairt hó-hó-hóis a bhí ann. In some countries it was about someone from a horror comic, and deliberately. I dtíortha áirithe ba gheall le duine as greannán uafáis é, agus d'aon ghnó. That terrifying song that warns young children that he is watching them be 'naughty or nice' was a real threat. In Hungary there was a danger that the dumb child would get a wooden spoon, and who knows what harm could be done to the same chattels afterwards. Ba mhó de bhagairt a bhí ann a réalaigh an t-amhrán sceimhliúil sin a thugann foláireamh do pháistí beaga go bhfuil sé ag faire ar iad a bheith ‘naughty or nice.' San Ungáir ba bhaol gurb é spúnóg adhmaid a gheobhadh an leanbh dalba, agus cá bhfios cén t-aimhleas ab fhéidir a bhaint as an airnéis chéanna ina dhiaidh sin. A lump of coal was threatened here, but now kids would hardly know what would be there if they found it. Bhagraítí cnap guail anseo, ach ar éigean go n-aithneodh páistí anois cad a bheadh ansin dá bhfaigheadh siad é. Something polished with a toy in the middle, probably. Rud éigin snasmhar a bhfuil bréagán istigh ina lár, is dócha. But that has changed beyond recognition now. Ach tá sin athraithe thar aitheantas anois. Joulupukki of Finland was a big ugly old man, and although he still bears that name he has become very kind in recent years, especially because he is worth a lot of money to the country's economy. Bodach mór gránna ba ea Joulupukki na Fionlainne, agus cé go bhfuil an t-ainm sin fós air tá sé éirithe an-chineálta le blianta beaga anuas, go háirithe toisc gur fiú airgead mór é d'eacnamaíocht na tíre. Greenland tried to claim Shanta for themselves, but for some reason I don't imagine thousands of planes overflowing with magical girls and boys landing in Nuuk or Kranni, let alone Uummannaqq itself. Dhein an Ghraonlainn iarracht ar Shanta a éileamh dóibh féin, ach ar chúis éigin ní shamhlaím na mílte eitleán ag cur thar maoil le cailíní agus le buachaillí draíochtshúileacha ag tuirlingt in Nuuk nó Kranni, gan trácht ar Uummannaqq féin. And for a whole other reason, the imagination fails to think of the local ox flying through the sky on Christmas night. Agus ar chúis eile ar fad, teipeann ar an tsamhlaíocht smaoineamh ar an damh áitiúil ag eitilt tríd an spéir oíche Nollag. The innovativeness of some of these traditions is remarkable.

This episode sees Michaela and Chantelle return to understanding the racialised exclusions at the heart of Britishness and other European national identities. They talk with Bel Parnell-Berry (https://project-parnell.com) who lives in the Netherlands. Drawing on the work she does as the programme manager for the European Race and Imagery Foundation (https://erifonline.org), Sinterklass and other practices of blackface across Europe, she talks about the exclusion of people of colour from imaginings of who counts as European. Turning to Brexit, she highlights how campaign groups for the rights of British citizens living in the EU overlooked how the removal of their rights sat in relation to migrant rights more generally, their focus on legal rights overlooked the racist treatment of People of Colour within these populations before and after Brexit. To find out more about Bel’s thoughts on the absence of migrant solidarity in the concerns of British citizens living in the EU in a time of Brexit, read her article for Gal-Der magazine (https://gal-dem.com/silence-allyship-lacking-migrant-solidarity-brits-abroad/)

The Feast of St. Nicholas became Sinterklass...became Christkindle...became Santa Clause, Kris Kringle, and jolly old St. Nick. Let's finally peel back the historical layers and ask who was the real Santa Claus -- Sinterklass -- St. Nicholas?
[ORIGINS OF XMAS] December 25 is coming up, and everybody is getting geared up for their Baby Jesus celebration. However, Christmas is not the only wintry celebration to come in the month of December. Due to the winter solstice, December has always been host to a number of pagan festivals, and some believe the date of Christmas was chosen to offset the many, many pagan rituals of the time period, including Saturnalia and Natalis Invicti. Similarly, if you’ve ever heard of the Yuletide, then you’ve at least passively acknowledged a Norse tradition. The reason for the season, historically, outside of the Christian religion, has to do with the re-birth of the sun gods and the celebration of the returning of light to the world. The winter solstice represents the shortest day of the year, and getting the sun back is definitely a reason to celebrate. But today’s episode isn’t about Christmas, not really. It’s about a half-goat, half-demon who punishes all the bad little children of the world, so if you were naughty this year, perhaps you should put off listening until the dawn has lit upon a post-Christmas day. Yes, I’ll be talking about Krampus. [KRAMPUS OVERVIEW] Krampus is a “half-goat, half-demon” with long horns and killer beard whose name comes from the German ‘Krampen’ for claw. He is the dark yin to Santa Claus’s yang. While Saint Nick brings joy and happiness to the good children of the world, Krampus punishes the bad children in some pretty deviant ways. He is a myth figure in middle and eastern Europe, including Austria, Bavaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, and Northern Italy. Basically, anywhere in the Alpine Region, you’re bound to run into the horned goat creature. If you travel over to Iceland, you’ll find a whole host of these Santa figures, known as the Jolasveinar. There’s the ‘Door Slammer’, ‘The Window Peeper,’ ‘The Sausage Snatcher,’ and ‘The Doorway Sniffer.’ December 5 is considered Krampusnacht, which I assume translates to Krampus Night. On this night, he travels from house-to-house, like Old Saint Nick, and leaves bundles of sticks for bad children. Doesn’t sound that bad, huh? Like coal in a stocking. However, if Krampus deems the child to be bad enough, he might bag up the offending child and toss her in a river or take her straight on down to Hell and save himself the trouble of trying to redeem the little bastard. He is sometimes depicted as having one cloven goat foot and one human foot, perhaps to bridge the gap of his half-human, half-devil form. The chain he carries may be a vestigial holdover having to do with binding the devil and whatnot, but today it just makes for one hell of a terrifying legend. The next day, after Krampus has whipped or damned all the evil kids, is Nikolastaugh, or St. Nicholas Day. The Dutch name, Sinterklass, eventually became our modern Santa Claus. It was his job to bring presents to all the good little boys and girls who missed the wrath of Krampus. [HISTORY] Nicholas himself became popular in Germany in the 11th Century, and though it is unclear when, exactly, Krampus came to popularity, it goes back as far as pre-Christian times. He is believed to be the son of Hel from Norse mythology, but whether that is exactly true is anybody’s guess. Either way, he is totally a pagan symbol. By the 17th century, Krampus had been incorporated into Christian celebrations. Over the course of a few hundred years, he melded together with the Santa Claus myth to become something of a dark, violent companion to the fat old gift-giver. And just as the legend grew, so did the list of punishments bad ole Krampus would mete out. This next part comes from a site called The Robot’s Voice: According to a series of very popular 1800s postcards, Krampus enjoyed: ripping pigtails out, leading children off a cliff, sadistic ear-pulling, putting pre-teens in shackles, forcing children to beg for mercy, and throwing youngsters on an Express Train to The Lake of Fire (making no local stops). And then there’s my favorite: drowning children to death in ink and fishing out the corpse with a pitchfork. In fact, today people can participate in the Krampuslauf (Krampus Run) in which young men dress up and participate. Other festivals include people dressing up as the goat-devil and attacking poor, unsuspecting party-goers, usually chasing them down and beating them about the legs with the birch sticks Krampus is known to carry. I’m not sure if this is still true, but some homes in the Alpine region were known to leave the bag of birch sticks hanging on the wall all year as a reminder to be good, lest Krampus make his visit the next Krampusnacht.

As the historical Nicholas of Myra has been distorted and morphed from Nicholas, to Saint Nick, to Sinterklass, to Santa Claus, we must be careful not to do a similar thing with Jesus, but to come to the real Jesus, not a caricature, and devote our lives to him as God who came to earth in the flesh and became our crucified and risen Lord and Savior.

"The Baker's Dozen" is a holiday story from the Dutch settlers of upstate New York, about a stubborn baker who learns an invaluable lesson about generosity. The story commemorates St. Nicholas Day (Dec. 6) a day to honor a legendary figure who also figures prominently in another holiday later in the month. Many people would be surprised to learn that St. Nicholas was a real person; and they'd be even more surprised to learn where he came from. He lived in the Fourth Century on the island of Lyra, which was then owned by Greece but later became part of Turkey. He was a rather small fellow who apparently had a broken nose. About a thousand years ago, his bones were smuggled to Italy to protect them from invaders, and they've been kept there ever since. But just recently, the Turkish government requested that Italy send them back so they can be put to rest in the place where he was born. Nicholas was well known for his generosity, which included the habit of leaving coins in people's shoes - thus the tradition of gift-giving in December. Many legends arose around him, and his fame spread to other countries. Among the Dutch, he became known as Sinterklass, which later became the English Santa Claus, and the legends about him blended with traditions from Norse mythology, including the use of reindeer. Dutch settlers in America celebrated St. Nicholas Day by eating cookies shaped like him. We come to you from Winston-Salem NC, after spending October enjoying the beautiful foliage and the haunting season in Massachusetts, and sending time with our son Zephyr in Rhode Island.
