Hear the chilling 1742 tale of two Bavarian brothers who learned firsthand what happens when the Christmas Devil decides you've been more naughty than nice. We'll trace his shadowy origins from ancient pagan winter spirits to the Church-tamed (yet never fully tamed) folk demon who survived bans, wars, and modernity itself. In this episode, I begin with reading from the Marquis de Sade, The dialogue between a priest and a dying man. This episode again is taking a little bit from group therapy and the discussions about the perceptions of being good or being bad and being punished based on the idea of Santa Claus, but then I started bringing up in the group the idea about Krampus.Krampus is half goat half man all demon and is based on some of the folklore in southern Germany and Austria. In this episode, I talk about the differentials between Santa being the god of Christmas and the birthday for Jesus Christ. In this episode, I also talk about how they relate BF Skinner, and experimental design about positive and negative reinforcement, and what punishment does when you're talking about the difference between a child and an adult in the way they see Christmas.I've always found a perceptions of people around the holiday season, going from country to country to be extremely interesting in regards to the norms, mores and taboos that built that particular country and dictate terms for that particular group of people.

In this episode, Madison and Chris dive horn-first into the folklore of Krampus—the clawed, chain-rattling counterpart to St. Nicholas who terrorizes naughty kids across the Alpine regions.Chris kicks things off with his real-life Krampusnacht memories from Amberg, Germany—complete with a snarling beast on a chain, Pope-style St. Nick, and the threat of being dragged into the woods at midnight. From there, we unravel how Krampus went from pagan winter monster to “Santa's bad cop,” why there are actually many Krampi (including lady Krampus variants), and how he got tangled up in Catholicism, bans, propaganda pamphlets, and violent Krampus runs that still send people to the ER.Madison breaks down:Krampus's origins in Alpine and pagan winter loreHis toolkit: birch switches, chains, baskets for kidnapping, and moreHow Krampusnacht works (boots, candy, birch-stick warnings, and a lot of schnapps)The postcards that turned him into a Christmas iconRare Krampus facts: the switch ledger, faceless Krampus, the glutton-eating adult version, and a boot-and-tallow summoning ritualWe also tease other winter monsters like Grýla, the Yule Lads, La Befana, and more unhinged holiday creatures that might get their own episodes if you ask for them loudly enough.MEET KRAMPUS IN SAVANNAHKrampus will be at the Savannah Paranormal Museum on December 6th, noon–4 p.m.Museum ticket + selfie: $5Museum ticket + pro photo: $10 totalJust want Krampus pics, no museum: $25 for selfie + pro photo bundleCome see us, grab a photo, and make some questionable holiday memories.NEW SHOW: THE OTHER SIDE SHOWIf you love “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” and horror, our horror/paranormal improv show The Other Side Show premieres December 9th, and we'll be live-streaming the first two episodes exclusively for Parajunkies.TELL US BELOWWhich winter monster should we cover next—Grýla, the Yule Cat, La Befana, or another Christmas cryptid? This is old enough that you've probably forgotten it. Tonight (December 5th) is Krampusnacht. Which means that it's the only time of the year when I'm justified in reseeding this show about Krampus, the terrifying German Christmas monster.
You know Dasher, and Dancer, and Prancer, and Vixen. Santa, and Frosty, and Rudolph, and Dickens. But do you know? The Alluring Dark Spirits of old? In this episode, you can meet three of the Dark Spirits of the Christmas with my guest Tania Yager. Tania is the author of the book The Allure of the Dark Spirits (which will be available Dec. 5, 2025 on Lulu). We talk about the process of getting the book written and about the three topics of the book: Krampus, La Befana, and the Mari Lwyd. The book "is a whimsical, bombastic, and deeply heartfelt journey into the shadowy magic of winter folklore. Part memoir, part shamanic exploration, and part folklore celebration, Yager invites readers to walk beside her as she meets the Alpine Krampus in the snowy streets of Munich, seeks out the Italian witch La Befana, and revisits her own bittersweet ties to Wales through the ghostly Mari Lwyd." We had a great discussion (one of the longer I've done) talking about her journey and about the spirits. The book will be available for order on Dec. 5, 2025 (Krampusnacht) in time for the holiday season. A gift for yourself and that special friend in your life who also enjoys the spirits of winter. “Venit nox” — vem a noite, dizia Jesus.

PHOTOS: San Antonio's first Krampus parade takes over Southtown Tpr, By Joey Palacios, on December 6, 2024https://www.tpr.org/arts-culture/2024-12-06/photos-san-antonios-first-krampus-parade-takes-over-southtownSan Antonio recently hosted its first Krampus parade in the King William neighborhood, drawing thousands to celebrate Germanic traditions. The event showcased horned demons, witches, and St. Nicholas figures, embodying a festive yet eerie atmosphere. While most attendees enjoyed the spectacle, some evangelical protesters voiced their discontent, decrying the event as promoting fear and judgment. Ironically, their protests seemed to bolster the parade's popularity. Overall, the parade was a success, highlighting San Antonio's cultural diversity and potentially establishing a beloved new holiday tradition. The Krampus myth originates from Germanic folklore as the dark counterpart to Santa Claus. On December 5th, Krampus supposedly punishes naughty children, a tradition adapted from earlier Alpine myths involving devilish goat-like figures. Historically, the Catholic Church opposed these pagan practices but incorporated Krampus into St. Nicholas lore to control and Christianize the tradition. Today, Krampus is celebrated in Alpine regions through costumes, parades, and schnaps offerings. The revival of Krampus celebrations has gained traction worldwide, particularly in the United States. Cities like New Orleans, New York, and Portland host Krampus events ranging from parades to haunted houses. These celebrations mix cultural nostalgia with modern festivities, often centering around drinking and merrymaking. St. Louis even turns its Krampusnacht into a pub crawl, while Columbia, South Carolina, boasts the oldest Krampus parade in the country.Evangelical criticism of Krampus events stems from their association with darkness and fear, concepts they view as antithetical to Christian values. Protesters argue that such events tarnish the purity of the Christmas season. However, this perspective is ironic given the inherent darkness in Christian theology surrounding sin, sacrifice, and salvation. The backlash may also reflect discomfort with losing cultural dominance as society embraces more diverse traditions. The popularity of Krampus celebrations can be attributed to various factors, including cultural heritage, a desire to challenge religious norms, and a simple love for festive revelry. For some, it's a nostalgic nod to their ethnic roots; for others, it's an irreverent counterbalance to Christmas commercialism. Whatever the motivation, Krampus parades like San Antonio's bring communities together in a uniquely spirited way.The Non-Prophets, Episode 24.01.1 featuring Scott Dickie, Kelley Laughlin, Jonathan Roudabush and Stephen HarderBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

One, two Krampus's watching you Three, four Svartalfr at your door Five, six He's got a switch of sticks Seven, eight You're gonna end in chains Nine, ten Christmas's at an end… Cheer......... or fear? This year, for our holiday special, Josh and Ryan are taking you to the dark side of the holidays, with a look at the 2015 riff on a classic piece of Eastern European folklore, Krampus. Hoping for gingerbread cookies? They're here, but you're the one on the menu. Elf on a shelf? These elves brought their meathooks. Do you wanna build a snowman?! Careful it doesn't pull you into the underworld! Or, maybe, this whole movie is a joking jab at every other Christmas classic out there, lampooning even the National Lampoons, skewering the claymation of yesteryear, and trodding upon the Hallmark outcomes that get hokier every year. It's the proverbial 'Dark Link' of the holiday movie universe. The balance to the holly jolly joy and saccharine sweet taste of too much candy and Christmas cinema. It's what the universe needs to stay spinning on its tenuous little spindle. We'll let you decide. Krampus was released in 2015 and stars Toni Collette, Adam Scott, David Koechner, and Allison Tolman. From all of us here at The Cinemeh Podcast to you, our listeners, we wish you the sincerest of happy holidays, whatever you celebrate, as this year comes to a close. We value you as you an audience, and many of you, as treasured friends and family. Thanks for being with us for another year of mediocre movies, and here's to another in 2025. It's almost Saint Nicholas Day, which means it's almost our anniversary, which means it's almost Krampusnacht! We're celebrating with two songs about Krampus. More specifically, we're celebrating with two songs about being a horny little freak for Krampus. Sometimes that's just how episode themes shake out, you know? First up is the campy parody "Krampus Daddy" by Jinkx Monsoon, followed by the cheerfully kinky "Krampus" by Golden Idols. The ranking song in this episode is "Holiday Freak Shit" by Mila J.

Tony speaks with you about the History of KrampusMeet Krampus, the horned companion of Saint Nicholas and the enigmatic figure lurking in the shadows of Central European folklore. With a name derived from the Old High German word "Krampen," meaning "claw," Krampus embodies the darker side of the holiday season. Depicted as a nightmarish creature with horns, cloven hooves, and a long, pointed tongue, Krampus is no benevolent gift-giver.In the yuletide duo with Saint Nicholas, Krampus takes on the role of the disciplinarian. Armed with birch branches, he swats and whips mischievous children, ensuring that the naughty face consequences during the festive period. This mythical being's origins are rooted in ancient pagan traditions, where horned creatures were linked to winter solstice rites.Krampusnacht, celebrated on December 5th in some regions, sees people don demonic Krampus costumes, partake in parades, and revel in the chaos that Krampus brings. Despite attempts to suppress this darker tradition in the 20th century, Krampus has experienced a resurgence in popularity in recent years, becoming a symbol of the complex and sometimes eerie nature of the holiday spirit. So, as you navigate the holiday season, remember that alongside the joy and festivities, Krampus stands as a reminder of the enduring power of folklore, offering a unique blend of fear, mischief, and cultural reflection. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3589860/advertisement
