Welcome to our class on Anava . We've been talking a lot about working on humility. Rabbi Chaim Friedlander's sefer Siftei Chaim , on the topic of Middot (page 133) asks a powerful question. He points out that the Mesilat Yesharim bases his sefer on the ladder of levels that are described by Rabbi Pinchas ben Yair, starting with Torah. Learning Torah brings to Zehirut/being careful, which brings one to Zerizut/being fast, which brings to Nekiut/being pure and goes on to Prishut/separating oneself physicality , purity and Hasidut/piousness. All the way at the end is humility . Humility is one of the last of the levels. It brings to one to Ruach , Hakodesh etc, and then we reach perfection. So seemingly, if we go step by step up the ladder, if we haven't yet conquered purity and piousness, how are we even talking about humility, which is so high up? To answer, the Siftei Chaim quotes a mashal he heard from Rav Yerucham Levovitz, the famed Mashgiach of the Mir in Europe, who says: When a person goes to a feast of kings, there are many, many portions and courses. There's the first course, the second course, the third course . I was once told that at the queen's table in England there are four forks and three knives! There are so many different hors d'oeuvres, appetizers, entrees, desserts… But what happens if a poor man walks in during the meal when they're up to the third course? Do they say, " Let's go back to the hor d'oeuvres ." No. He doesn't even ask for that. Whatever they're up to at that time is what they give him, and that's enough for him at that point. He's not worried about courses or etiquette or about the proper way to do things. He's hungry . That's the mashal . The nimshal is that we are poor when it comes to Avodat Hashem. Yes, 'wealthy' people of old such as Rabbi Pinhas ben Yair and others, of course had an order. He's like the chef telling you how you're supposed to serve the meal. Each one is going to lead to the next one. Yes, you want ices after the hors d'oeuvres to cleanse you palate, and yes, you want to have tea at the end. But a person who is spiritually poor has to grab whatever they give him, even if it's out of order, and even if he doesn't understand exactly what he's doing and why he's doing it. He has to take what he can get. The Gemara says, ' This world is like a wedding, Grab and eat. Grab and eat. ' What does that mean? It means sometimes you're not eating in a specific order, with all the rules and regulations. You're just grabbing and eating. That's the way it is with our Ruchaniut/spirituality. I'll grab and eat, I 'll nosh on this and that. This is similar to the story that the Chafetz Chaim witnessed once. A girl was selling apples in the marketplace. Someone came and knocked over her basket of apples and they were rolling all over the street. Ruffians started grabbing the apples. The girl was just standing there crying, until a wise man told her, Grab something for yourself also . When the Chafetz Chaim heard this, he said, That's what's going on in our lives. The Yetzer Hara turned over the apple cart and he's grabbing away everything from us. So grab something back for yourself . We don't have to do everything exactly according to the proper system. We, too, can work on humility. We may not have the full depth and the understanding that we'd have if we did it with the recommended approach, on the regular road. Here's an example of another Middah . He says, hessed - we all know what kindness is. We do kindness, but if you want to really dissect it, true kindness means that I am not an egoistic person. I'm not someone that's focused on myself. I'm giving because the other person needs and all the other niceties- we'll call it the icing on the cake to do a hessed properly . But just because you can't have a cake with icing, that doesn't mean you have can't cake at all. Sometimes you might only have the icing, but if you're hungry, you'll take cake without the icing or icing without the cake. You can't be picky. At the end of the day, it will give you nourishment. It might not give you exactly what you need, but, as the famous saying goes, Perfect is the enemy of good (quoted by Rabbi Frand at the Siyum HaShas, and attributed to French philosopher Voltaire). This means that sometimes people try to do something exactly the way it's supposed to be but end up do nothing. It's like a very perfectionist housewife saying, If I can't have the perfect meal, I'm not going have any guests at all. That's really counterproductive. Just because you can't have all the niceties, with waiters and china and a ten course meal, that doesn't mean you shouldn't have guests at all. It's the same thing when it comes to working on our Middot, says Rav Yerucham Levovitz. We might not have everything perfect, and it might not be the way it's supposed to be, but perfect is the enemy of good. Therefore, when we're working on humility, don't say, how can I work on humility? I'm far, far from it. You can also have a connection to humility. The Chafetz Chaim once met a baker and asked, " How's business? " The baker replied, " It's so hard to be a baker. The housewives are so picky and they're always complaining, 'It's too hard… it's too soft.' "Then a few years later he met the baker again and asked how business was. This time the baker said says, " Business is great!" The Chafetz Chaim asked what had changed, and the baker replied, " Well, it's wartime. There's a shortage of bread. If anyone can get any bread, they're thrilled and happy to take the it. There are never any complaints." The Chafetz Chaim said it's the same thing with Ruchaniut . In the days of old where there was plenty of spirituality, and plenty of people serving Hashem, in a world that was much more pristine, of course in Shamayim, they were picky. The chef in Shamayim's kitchen was very picky and very exacting, Everything had to be organic, everything had to be fresh, everything had to be Whole Foods. But in you're in a time of famine, no one gets picky on what they're going to eat or serve. If they get picky, they die. Like the sad story in Masechet Gittin , of the wealthy woman who sent her aid out to buy fine wheat in the marketplace. There was no fine wheat left but by the time he came back to tell her, and she sent him out to buy a lower grade of wheat, there was none of that left either. She then sent him for barley and the same thing happened, and on and on until eventually there nothing was left to eat at all. So smart people realize, and Hashem's Bet Din up there is quite smart, that w hen there's a famine, we're happy with what we can get . We don't have the perfect meal. We don't have the right silverware, we don't have the right ingredients, nor the right dishes. But it's like making sprinkle cookies with your children on a day off, with all their germs and mess…They're so proud and you're so proud. Well, that's the way Hashem looks at our Avodat Hashem today. So make your little cookies, put some Anava sprinkles on them and be proud.

Shiur from Rabbi Rudinsky's Annual Siyum HaShas before Pesach. Recorded in the Yeshiva Ketana Ohr Reuven, Monsey NY.
Have you ever questioned what being proud of your heritage means to you? Being deeply proud of our Jewish identity is about celebrating and living by our values of unity, compassion, and generosity. We've seen these values come to life in the most challenging of times during the recent conflict in Israel. The inspiring tales of kindness we share in this episode are full of lessons for all of us. We marvel at the stories of individuals and businesses within our community who showed immense support for the IDF and their families, truly embodying Jewish pride and unity.Let's take a moment to acknowledge the impact kindness has in our community and in our world. Jewish pride is not only about our history and culture, but also about our actions and our heart. We talk about the Washington DC Jewish march and the Siyum Hashas celebration, and how they exemplify this value of kindness. We also reflect on the work done by volunteer organizations - helping those in need, irrespective of their faith. As we wrap up, we invite you to virtually visit a hospital's Bikur Cholim room, a testament to Jewish generosity. It's these acts of compassion and kindness that truly define who we are, and that's the kind of pride we should carry and share with the world. Tune in, celebrate our Jewish pride with us, and let's continue to make this world a better place. This episode (#257) of the Jewish Inspiration Podcast by Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe is dedicated in Honor of Michal Sara Polatsek and our Holy Soldiers in the Battlefield and our Torah Scholars in the Study Halls who are fighting for the safety of our nation!****To listen to other podcasts by Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe: https://linktr.ee/ariwol Jewish Inspiration Podcast: https://inspiration.transistor.fm/episodes Parsha Review Podcast: https://parsha.transistor.fm/episodes Living Jewishly Podcast: https://jewishly.transistor.fm/episodes Thinking Talmudist Podcast: https://talmud.transistor.fm/episodes Unboxing Judaism Podcast: https://unboxing.transistor.fm/episodes Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe Podcast Collection: https://collection.transistor.fm/episodes Please send your questions, comments and even your stories to awolbe@torchweb.orgPlease visit www.torchweb.org to see a full listing of our Jewish outreach and educational resources available in the Greater Houston area and please consider sponsoring a podcast by making a donation to help support our global outreach at https://www.torchweb.org/donate. Shiur from Rabbi Rudinsky's Annual Siyum HaShas before Pesach. Recorded in the Yeshiva Ketana Ohr Reuven, Monsey NY.
It is very common for people to look around and see other people's blessings and feel bad that they aren't sharing the same success. We tend to look at financial gain as the ultimate blessing and can't help but wonder why people who aren't observant are doing so well in that area. There is so much more to life than money. We have no idea what is going on in other people's lives. Financial gains does not mean that the person is living a blessed life. The main rewards for our avodah are in the Next World. But even here, Hashem has so many meaningful ways of blessing people beyond what money could ever buy. Rabbi Yechiel Meir Tzudker told a story about a man named Mr. Donat who received a share in the first public transport company in Israel, called Shachar as part of his immigration privileges. For Donat, this was a marvelous stroke of good fortune. In time, Shachar merged with HaMikasher, another transportation company, forming the iconic Egged Bus Service and shares skyrocketed. Just the dividends earned from his share in Egged were sufficient to support Mr. Donat's family comfortably. Yet, this merger resulted in an unforeseen problem for Torah observant shareholders. When the newly founded Egged began operating, a large number of bus lines ran on Shabbat. Now anyone who owned shares in the company would be profiting from chilul Shabbat . Mr. Donat asked the Rav of Haifa, Rav Avraham Yitzchak Klein about what to do. Simply, this was forbidden, but Rabbi Klein wouldn't rule on the matter because there was so much poverty in Israel at the time, and if Mr. Donat would give up his shares, he would most probably have to start collecting to feed his family, which was not a simple matter. It borderlined a question of pikuach nefesh . And so he sent Mr. Donat to the Chazon Ish with the question, saying only the Gadol HaDor could answer such a critical question. At that time, the Chazon Ish was ill and bedridden, but because Mr. Donat traveled for a half a day to get there, they allowed him in to quickly present his question. After hearing it, the Chazon Ish responded with just two words. “ אין אפשרות ” which meant it would be impossible to allow. Mr. Donat heard the Gadol's reply and his heart plummeted. Yet, despite his heartache and fear, he completely accepted the ruling and immediately set out for Egged's main offices. When he arrived, he requested the deed of his share and ripped it into pieces, forfeiting his share in the company and its considerable returns. In that second, Donat was reduced from a man of means to a pauper. Instead of living in comfort, he became a low wage vendor and spent his days lugging around a heavy suitcase, selling soap door to door. But despite all the difficulties, he walked with his head held up high, knowing he sacrificed wealth and comfort to follow Hashem. Even when he turned 80 years old, he was still working hard. While his friends were reaping the benefits of their pensions and living off their savings, old Mr. Donat was still working hard to make ends meet. In his later years, he ended up changing jobs and became a helper in a yeshiva building. One day, he came into the building with a beaming smile on his face. One of the boys there asked him why he was so happy. Mr. Donat replied, “This morning I was walking in one of the upscale neighborhoods on Mount Carmel when I bumped into an old acquaintance of mine, a former colleague from my days in Egged. He recognized me and said, ‘You see all these splendid houses around you? They all belong to veteran Egged shareholders. Look at what you lost when you foolishly forfeited your share. That one share would have been worth millions today. We are all living in beautiful homes with pools and cars while you are still toiling away like a workhorse.'” Mr. Donat continued, “I didn't answer him because he would never understand what I have. Besides for my eternal rewards for what I gave up, tonight I am going to attend my son's Siyum HaShas . This is not any siyum HaShas , my son was tested and knows the entire Shas by heart. Tonight, I'll be sitting with great Rabbis and the room will be filled with my children, children-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom are filled with Torah and yirat Shamayim . You see, Shabbat paid me back ten-fold with the most nachat a person could have in this world.” It is not always about money. There is so much more to life than just dollars and cents.
Study Guide Nedarim 2 Masechet Nedarim is sponsored by Aviva and Benny Adler in honor of our mother Lorraine Kahane and in loving memory of our parents Joseph Kahane z"l, Miriam and Ari Adler z"l. Today's daf is sponsored by the Agus family in honor of Aviva Adler completing the Siyum HaShas. Today's daf is sponsored by Rabia and Oliver Mitchell in honor of their daughter Ellin Mitchell Cooper on becoming the Yoetzet Halacha for Manhattan. Today's daf is sponsored by Amy Bardack in loving memory of the 11 souls who were killed in the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting four years ago. Yehi Zichram Baruch. When someone takes a vow to forbid an item, that vow is effective. One can take a vow using the language of a vow (neder) or also using a similar term that has the same meaning (kinui). The same holds true for cherem (a type of vow performed by using the term cherem), oaths and vows to take upon oneself to become a nazir. If one uses a different language that indicates that one is distancing or separating from a friend or one will not eat from a friend, this is effective as well. The Gemara refers to this category as yadot, incomplete statements. If one uses a language of excommunication: "I am menuda (excommunicated) from you," Rabbi Akiva was unsure how to treat it and therefore ruled stringently. Masechet Nazir begins in the same manner, mentioning that if one uses a kinui (word similar to) of nazir, the vow is effective, but does not mention vow, oaths and cherem. The Gemara notes the difference between the two mishnayot and tries to figure out why. The answer leads to a further question regarding the order of our Mishna - vows, cherem, oaths and nazir. Another issue is raised regarding the structure of the Mishna. To resolve this issue, they explain that the Mishna is missing words. This leads to a further question as the order is troubling - it starts with kinuyim and then moves to yadot, then explains the yadot in detail and then goes back to explain kinuyim. Why? This can be explained as an ABBA structure as can be found in a number of other mishnayot. Why are some mishnayot written in that structure and others ABAB?
Study Guide Ketubot 106 The last week of Masechet Ketubot learning is sponsored in honor of Aviva Adler’s Siyum HaShas by the members of her Navi chavura - Naomi, Tova, Vivi, Chani, Shoshana, Mindy and their spouses. "Aviva, we wish you many more years of learning in good health surrounded by all those who love you and continue to be inspired by you." Today's daf is sponsored in honor of the marriage of Adina and Eric Hagege's son Eilon. Mazal tov! Today's daf is sponsored in honor of Noa - best wishes for an easy birth. The Gemara continues the story of Rav Anan and how someone who tried to give him a bribe indirectly caused a perversion of justice. Rav Anan is punished as his visits with Eliahu HaNavi are no longer as they were before. The difference is used to explain why there are two different works known as Seder Eliahu Raba and Seder Eliahu Zuta. As a verse regarding Elisha was mentioned previously (Kings 2 4:43), the Gemara brings another drasha on that verse explaining that Elisha had 2,200 scholars that he taught and fed daily. In the context of that statement, they then mention several rabbis and how many students they each fed. The number of students decreased with each rabbi mentioned. What else was paid for by the Temple treasury (trumat halishka - money collected from the half shekel)? There is a debate regarding the women who weaved the parochet – was it paid for by the Temple treasury or by the money collected for building and upkeep of the Temple (bedek habayit). A question is asked regarding the vessels in the Temple – are they needed for the sacrifices and therefore paid from the Temple treasury or are they needed for the altar and therefore paid for by the building/upkeep funds? Different opinions are brought and difficulties are raised. In the end, it is explained that it is a tannaitic debate.
As we begin a new year with a fresh start, it's important to remind ourselves how much we can accomplish if we just put our minds to it. No matter how insurmountable obstacles seem to be, we have to remember, we have Hashem who gives us a lot of siyata d'Shamaya , especially when it comes to our spiritual growth. A man said he had a very rough childhood. His father passed away when he was just eight years old and his mother had the very difficult task of trying to raise all the children by herself. They lived in an apartment in Brooklyn. They did not know much about religion, and so, he grew up non-observant. As he got older, he managed to find a job and establish himself financially. At the same time, he met people who influenced him positively and he became fully shomer Torah u'mitzvot . He kept growing in Torah until he was overflowing, and people asked him to give classes. Today, he is inspiring hundreds, if not thousands. Recently, he was called to give a group of men a private class. When he arrived at the address, he got very nostalgic, realizing it was the very same apartment in which he grew up in. As he sat in the dining room teaching Torah, he was overcome with gratitude to Hashem. In this apartment, he grew up not knowing anything about Torah, and today Hashem brought him back, fifty years later, to the exact same spot to teach others Torah. He had many challenges, but he persevered and Hashem gave him tremendous siyata d'Shamaya . A few weeks ago in a community in New Jersey, there was a very big celebration. The rabbi there told me, three years ago one of his congregants aged 87 attended the Siyum HaShas at MetLife Stadium. He became very inspired by a line by Rabbi Frand which went something to the sort of, “It's never too late, it's never too little and it's never enough.” The man told his son he wanted to finish Shas. This man, although very sharp, had no background in Gemara learning. Nonetheless, he was ready to take on the challenge. He also told his son he did not want to wait seven and a half years to finish. He wanted to make the siyum in time for his 90 th birthday. They calculated that he would need to learn about three pages of Gemara a day to accomplish that, and with a very strong will and perseverance, this man made a community-wide siyum celebrating his completion of Shas a few weeks shy of his 90 th birthday. He spoke there about his journey and how he was able to accomplish this amazing feat. Hashem gives us all endless potential and endless siyata d'Shamaya . We could all become so great if we just have the desire and are willing to put in the effort. May Hashem help us all reach our true potential and become the people we are meant to become.
