Chava Green--Hasidic Feminism: What it Means to Truly Come into Your Feminine

"How can you expect your husband to treat you like a woman when you don't act like one?" This is a quote that was shared with us during our interesting conversation on Hasidic Feminism. Chava Green, an educator, writer, and public speaker, has a PhD in Religion from Emory, where she wrote her dissertation on Hasidic Feminism. Chava explains that secular feminism focuses on the equality of men and women. The differences between them seem to have been erased. There is a notion that women can, and should, do everything that men can do. In contrast, Hasidic feminism believes that there is, in fact, a difference between men and women. Women and men have different roles, but the importance of those roles is equal. It's not that one gender is better or more powerful than the other. Rather, men and women work together and each of their roles are necessary and also complementary to each other. Women create the holiness and sanctity of the home through their bina yeseira--their deep understanding of what's happening under the surface. They are able to nurture their families from a different place than men. They have access to a softer place of connection and wisdom of what needs to be done--more than what meets the eye. Women function beyond the surface to see actual reality, which is not always the way it presents itself. The power and glory of a woman is what is within her. She accepts what is, and elevates it. Chava shares the concept that men are the givers and women are the receivers. Women don't have to do it all. They don't need to have the masculine energy of pushing forward and accomplishing and getting things done. If women feel overwhelmed, they should daven to Hashem (G-d) to help them become a receiver. We need to look for Hashem in every situation.Chava encourages women to be their whole feminine selves! To hear more from Dr. Chava Green check out her website at https://thehasidicfeminist.wordpress.com/ or sign up for her monthly newsletter on all things Jewish and gender related, https://the-hasidic-feminist.kit.com/16d7257907Contact: atrebbetzins@gmail.comVera Kessler (host of America's Top Rebbetzins) is a certified life coach. Today's daf is sponsored by Dianne Kuchar in loving memory of her husband Dennis, Shimon Avraham, on his 3rd yahrzeit. "We all miss him." Today's daf is sponsored by Raquel Pilzer & Jennifer Lankin in loving memory of their beloved brother, Avigdor Chai Avraham on his 4th yahrzeit. "You are always on our minds and in our hearts." And also for the constant strength & safety of Raquel's husband Zevi in his current round of miluim." Today's daf is sponsored by Sara Berelowitz in honor of her newest grandchild, Levi, son of Chava and Meyer Sterman. The Gemara establishes the Mishna according to Rabbi Yishmael by explaining the case of oaths in the Mishna to refer to one who transgresses intentionally and is to receive lashes, not a sacrifice. This raises a difficulty with Rabbi Yochanan who holds like an unattributed Mishna but does not hold by this Mishna, as there is a case where no action is performed and Rabbi Yochanan holds there are no lashes in that case. To resolve the difficulty, they bring a different Mishna that Rabbi Yochanan holds by instead. Why would Rabbi Yochanan choose one and not the other? Why would Rebbi bring two different contradictory Mishnayot? After resolving all the issues, the Gemara raises a further issue. How can the Mishna be referring to lashes as leprosy and Shabbat as they are not punishable by lashes? There is a case of leprosy where one receives lashes and for Shabbat there are lashes if one is warned regarding lashes as Rabbi Yishmael holds that a negative commandment that is punishable by death can also be punishable by lashes. This explains why from the start the Mishna was explained according to Rabbi Yishmael. However, the Gemara questions this last point as the Mishna clearly doesn't accord with Rabbi Akiva for other reasons as he does not include one who forgets about the Temple and sacrificial items. This question can be resolved in the same way as we read the Mishna according to Rabbi Yishmael, with lashes instead of a sacrifice. After resolving the previous issues, more difficulties are raised with explaining the Mishna to be referring to lashes, as in the case of impurity, it is clear from the wording in the Mishna that the issue is one who sinned unwittingly and is obligated to bring a sacrifice. Therefore Rav Kahana (on the basis of Rav Yosef, but with a modification) explains that the Mishna accords with Rebbi who holds like Rabbi Yishmael in the case of impurity and Rabbi Akiva in the case of oaths. How can Rav Kahana be sure that Rebbi holds like Rabbi Yishmael in impurity and Rabbi Akiva in oaths. The Gemara provides sources for each one.

Chava taught about how a woman's relationship to Judaism shifts over time based on the life stages she is in. She delved into the teachings of Chassidus to give us a clear paradigm of how to navigate the changes in our Jewish practice as we move into all the stages from being single to marriage to childrearing. When we understand how a woman's relationship to Torah and mitzvos is a deep and flowing river, rather than a set of boxes to check off, we can move through life with more confidence in our role as Jewish women.Handout: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DcGqgi7nk3hnWijyoAdsGTyCLTSZpcbM/view?usp=sharingHelp make classes like this happen!https://cash.app/$livingchassidushttp://Paypal.me/livingchassidushttps://livingchassidus.org/donate/Zelle: 205-937-9914https://www.venmo.com/u/LivingChassidus

Welcome to our series on humility. Yesterday we spoke about the concept of Rommemut HaNefesh/ an exalted uplifted soul . Today we'll continue with that topic, starting with a quote from Rabbenu Yonah in Shaare HaAvoda. It's worthwhile to read every word. He says, " The first opening of serving Hashem is that the person who's serving Hashem should know his value and realize his qualities, and the qualities of his forefathers; how great they were, how important they were, how dear they were to Hashem. And they should try and strengthen themselves constantly to keep themselves on that high level and to act on it constantly. And every day, continue to add strength to get even more qualities to connect to their Creator. It'll be slow at the beginning, but he will get even greater as time goes on." And then he says, " This will cause him that when he has a desire to do something negative or he becomes arrogant and wants to do something improper, he'll be embarrassed of himself and of his forefathers and he'll tell himself, 'Somebody great and important like me, with is so many wonderful qualities…I'm the children of the greats of kings of old, how can I do such a thing like this?'" And he quotes a term used by Yosef HaSadik, " איך אעשה הרעה הגדולה הזאת וחטאתי לאלקים /How could I do a sin like this and sin to God?" hinting to that's what saved Yosef. And the word that he uses in Hebrew is, I have qualities that are exalted… And he says the opposite: If heaven forbid, you don't realize your qualities and qualities of forefathers, very easily you're going to go in the ways of the Pritzim/people that breach the proper ways. He says The one that wants to serve Hashem has to constantly try to realize his qualities and the qualities of the Sadikim and Hasidim and how important and endearing they are to Hashem. He has to realize that he too can reach those levels of importance and endearment, as long as he serves Hashem the way they did and uses his time and abilities according to his strengths and talents . As the pasuk says in Devarim 30,14, כִּֽי־קָר֥וֹב אֵלֶ֛יךָ הַדָּבָ֖ר מְאֹ֑ד בְּפִ֥יךָ וּבִֽלְבָבְךָ֖ לַעֲשֹׂתֽוֹ / It's extremely close to you, in your mouth and your heart to do it which means Hashem is not asking you more than you can do. And our great forefathers Avraham Yitzhak and Yaakov served Him according to their abilities." Unbelievable words of hizuk from Rabbenu Yonah, That the first step towards serving Hashem is realizing your hashivut / importance . And again, that's not a contradiction to being humble. On the other hand, Rav Chaim Vital in his sefer Shaare. Kedusha , section 2 gate 4 says almost the same words in contrast, that being down on yourself is the gate of the beginning of the seduction of the Yetzer Harah. Even if you're a sadik, the Yetzer Hara will come to you as a pious man and say, 'How could you even entertain coming close to the Holy King of the world, you piece of dust, worms and maggots?' These attitudes come from the original snake that interacted with Adam and Chava. Last class we spoke about Amalek. Amalek is the evil force that tries to tell us, Rak Rah Kol HaYom/ You're only evil, all day . The pasuk in Yeshaya 14,29 says ךְ כִּֽי־מִשֹּׁ֤רֶשׁ נָחָשׁ֙ יֵ֣צֵא צֶ֔פַע וּפִרְי֖וֹ שָׂרָ֥ף מְעוֹפֵֽף׃ / From the root of the Nachash/snake will emerge a Sefa/viper. These are 2 different types of snakes. And our rabbis tell us that from the root of the snake (referring to the original snake, the sin of Adam HaRishon) will come out a viper- referring to Amalek. The Chida says in Nachal Eshkol , his commentary on Kohelet 10,11, that the numerical value of צפע is 90 + 80 + 70 = 240, the same numerical value as עמלק Amalek. Amalek is that continuation, the embodiment of the snake. And that's why just like in the future it says the snake will be wiped out, so too, Amalek will be wiped out. As we mentioned previously, the epitome of Amalek was Haman . And that's why the sefer Kehilat Yaakov, written by Rav Yaakov Tzvi Yalish (1777- 1825), one of the students of the Chozeh of Lublin tells us that Haman is Rasheh Tevot for ה וא מ שרש נ חש . He comes from the root of the snake. The opposite is Mordechai HaSadik. Haman was there to bring down the exaltedness of the Jewish people and Mordechai brought it up by not bowing. The snake is told, in Bereshit 3:15 וְאֵיבָ֣ה ׀ אָשִׁ֗ית בֵּֽינְךָ֙ וּבֵ֣ין הָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה I will put hatred between you and the woman. The word איבה spells is א יש י הודי ה יה ב שושן. Wonder of wonders, that we have this concept clearly brought out that it goes back to the snake who started all our problems. The snake tried to introduce the false Rommemut/ arrogance into man and he continues his mission with Amalek, and with Haman. Let us again go a little deeper into our story: As the Jewish people are leaving Mitzrayim, they're going out ביד רמה with an uplifted hand, with Rommemut. Amalek can't stand that. Amalek can't swallow the fact that we're coming out with Rommemut . Amelek's numerical value 240 is רם as well. Every concept has a negative and positive. The Jewish people are the Rommemeut of Kedusha/ the holy aspect of exaltedness, whereas Amalek is the opposite. He's the contaminated aspect of exaltedness. He misuses this concept of Rommemeut . He's a fraud. He's Haman who makes it look like he's רם Ram/exalted , important. But it's fake, because he is dependent on the world to give him that importance. It's not inherent. He goes wild when he doesn't get his importance because he's not really internally great. He doesn't have internal qualities of greatness. The Elder of Kelm in Shemot , essay 253 tells us that true honor cannot be taken by anybody else. As it says in Mishleh 3,35 כָּ֭בוֹד חֲכָמִ֣ים יִנְחָ֑לוּ l The wise inherit honor. Because they have wisdom, they have inherent greatness. If a person is always complaining and in pain because they don't get outside recognition and constantly feel chased by others, that is a sign that other people own his honor and they can give it or take it away from him. But not the Chachamim . They have inherent honor and no one can take it away from them. Look what Haman ended up saying. When one person, Mordechai, doesn't bow down to him, he says, " כל זה איננו שוה לי This is all worthless to me ." Of course, he can't show it, as it says, VeYitapek Haman. Haman holds himself back. He controls himself, but he knows, inside of him, how much it hurt. The rabbis tell us, based on Gemara in Masechet Megila that Yaakov Avinu requested from Hashem, " Don't let Esav HaRasha get his will. " And that refers, it says to גרממיא של אדם If Hashem would not have held them back, they would have destroyed the whole world. Rav Yaakov Emden, hundreds of years before the Holocaust, says there's a mistake in the text- It shouldn't say גרממיא , it should say גרמניה , Germany . So the Gemara clearly says that Germany is this force that comes from Esav (as does Amelek) that could wipe out the world. The Germans mimic the fake concept of Rommemut as well. As we know, Hitler professed the Aryan race, his pseudoscientific superior race concept. Now that we have DNA and RNA, there's nothing to support this claim. It's what we called pseudoscience. But they believed that they were some special, superior specimen of humankind. They thought they were a master race and they believed that non-Aryans were racially inferior. The term that Hitler used was Untermentsch/subhuman, and he claimed they were an existential threat that had to be exterminated. That was the state ideology that led to the Holocaust. Blonde hair, blue eyes- a made-up, fake Rommemeut . There's nothing there. It's Pseudoscientific. Rav Wolbe writes in his sefer at the end of Parashat Beshalach where it talks about Amalek's attack, that the Jewish people have quality . That we have what's called Azut D'Kedusha. We have a strength of brazenness, of holiness. We don't give up. Like Mordechai, we aren't impacted by outside world opinion. That's why we're still here today. We're called Azin Sh'bUmot the most brazen of nations , and we wouldn't survive without that. But Amalek has the Azut of Tum'ah. As it says, Every nation is in trembling, they were all impacted by the event of Keriat Yam Suf. And who was the one that said, I'm going to be brazen I don't care… That was Amalek. He's not impacted. He doesn't change from anything around him, from anything outside of him. He continues to do what he wants to do. That's the ultimate evil. As long as Amalek is around, Hashem's throne is not complete. He is the antithesis of a Hashem. Shaul Hamelech was the first king to take on Amalek but he didn't do it. Why not? In Shmuel 1, perek 15:24, Shaul excuses himself and says חָטָ֔אתִי כִּֽי־עָבַ֥רְתִּי אֶת־פִּֽי־יְהֹוָ֖ה וְאֶת־דְּבָרֶ֑יךָ כִּ֤י יָרֵ֙אתִי֙ אֶת־הָעָ֔ם וָאֶשְׁמַ֖ע בְּקוֹלָֽם׃ I sinned. I didn't listen to Hashem and to you. Because I was afraid of the people. You were afraid of the people? That's a lack of Azut D'Kedusha. You can't take on Amalek, the Azut of Tum'ah unless you possess Azut D'Kedusha. Lastly, we said there's difference between Ga'ava , which means you think you're great because you're above somebody, and Rommemut , which is inherent exaltedness. We say Romemtanu Mikol Leshonot/God lift us up/exalted us, above all other tongues. But why do we have to be above all other tongues? It should be inherent, shouldn't it? And the answer is, it is inherent. We are greater than all other tongues doesn't mean that we're just greater than all the nations. It means our language is greater, not by comparison, but it's inherently greater. The building blocks of creation were the 22 letters of the Alef Bet. Just like we have a periodical table elements, we have the 22 letters. They call water H2O, two hydrogen and one oxygen. But if you could look with spiritual glasses, you would see water is מים . Mem Yud Mem. That's the spiritual makeup of water, and that's why it's called the Mayim . When you call it water or agua or any other name, it's just a made up word to refer to it. It's not the inherent essence of the word. So the only language that is inherently exalted, because it's talking about the thing itself, is Lashon Hakodesh . That's why we're not just being arrogant about our language, like, " My language is more poetic than yours ." Or, " My language is richer than yours." No, it's inherently exalted. Rabbi Yochanan holds that a gentile is not permitted to learn Torah. He views it as part of the Noahide laws - either under theft or forbidden sexual relations. This is derived from Devraim 33:4 as the Torah is considered morasha, an inheritance, and that is either understood that it belongs exclusively to the Jewish people, or it is understood as a reference to meurasa, that we are betrothed to God. A contradiction to Rabbi Yochanan is brought from a statement of Rabbi Meir that a gentile who learns Torah is like a kohen gadol, a high priest. The resolution is to differentiate between learning the seven Noahide laws and the rest of the Torah. What is the source in the Torah for Rabbi Chanina ben Gamliel's position that blood from a live animal is forbidden as part of the Noahide laws? If a commandment was given to the sons of Noah and then repeated when the Torah was received, that is an indicator that the rule is meant both for the sons of Noah and for the Jewish people. But a commandment sons of Noah and then not repeated after the Torah was given, is meant to be for Jews only. this is Rabbi Chanina's position. First, the Gemara questions these rules as they seem counter-intuitive. After explaining the logic, they proceed to raise difficulties from actual commandments. Those, too, as resolved. Noach was permitted to eat meat but Adam was not.  The Gemara raises four difficulties on this and through the questions, several interesting issues are raised including, why did the snake seduce Adam and Chava? What is the status of meat that falls from the sky - can it be presumed to be kosher?

Daily Emunah Podcast - Daily Emunah By Rabbi David Ashear

Living Emunah 2655 Don't Fall for It The joy that we experienced on the Chag is supposed to carry us throughout the year. There is a big yetzer hara that can disturb a person's happiness, and we must not fall prey to it. The Gemara tells us that Adam and Chava had the most blissful life in Gan Eden. There were angels roasting meat for them and serving them wine. But then the nachash came along and told Chava that she was lacking. He made her feel that without that one fruit they weren't able to have she would be missing so much. Then she set her eye upon it, desired it, and ate it, and that ruined everything. They had it all, but the nachash who was the evil inclination made them feel lacking. They felt that they couldn't be happy without the one thing they didn't have. This yetzer hara plagues all of us until today. Hashem gives every person everything he needs to be happy but then he looks elsewhere and sees what others have and becomes envious and can no longer enjoy the wonderful blessings that he has. The secret to the happiness of the Jewish people in the desert was that the openings of their tents did not face each other, and thus no one was able to see what the other one had. Someone could have the most beautiful kitchen but then he looks through his window and sees that his neighbors are redoing their kitchen and all of a sudden his kitchen is not good anymore. Today this yetzer hara has found its way into apps that contain pictures of everyone else's lives. This is bringing the nachash into our homes and destroying them. Someone could have the greatest life but the eye fools him into thinking that everyone else has everything better than him until he can no longer enjoy anything that he has. Rabbi Menashe Reizman pointed out that today even a poor man lives better than the wealthiest people from 300 years ago. Someone from that time who had it all did not have running water in his house. He did not have a shower or a toilet. He did not have air conditioning or heating. His bed was not as comfortable and his kitchen was not as equipped, yet he enjoyed everything so much. Today when we have so much more we are unhappy just because someone else has something that we don't have. It doesn't make sense, but it's the yetzer hara, and it doesn't have to make sense. The best advice is not to look at what others have but rather focus on what Hashem has given us. The same thing applies in the spiritual realms. Some people become depressed because they aren't able to comprehend the Gemara like their peers or they aren't able to give tzedaka like their peers. They must realize that Hashem expects a different avodah from different people. Someone who wasn't blessed with the highest IQ is not expected to comprehend everything. Hashem does not reward for results. He rewards for efforts. There can be two people in the same shiur and one understands everything and the other understands only half of what is being taught. Yet the one who understands half may be better off than the one who understands everything if he invests more effort than him. Someone who gives a hundred dollars to tzedaka can be considered greater than someone who gives a thousand or ten thousand. It's all relative to how much Hashem gives each person. Hashem gives everyone the exact lives that they need to be happy and successful in this world: Their spouse, their children, their living conditions, their brain power, their background. They are all carefully planned out for their success. If we could learn to focus on what we have and what we are capable of doing, we will always be happy and be able to do the jobs that we were sent here to do with joy.

The Kabbalistic Connection Between Adam, Chava, and PrayerThis episode delves into the Kabbalistic teachings of Rav Nosson, exploring the concept of Adam and Chava as one entity before their separation, and how this metaphor extends to the creation and perception of existence. It discusses how speech (Malchus) is central to creation, as articulated through divine breath and words. The episode further explains the importance of transforming Torah study into prayer (tefillah), emphasizing that Adam's fundamental purpose and, by extension, the Jewish nation's purpose is to daven. It suggests that the ultimate challenge faced by Adam and humanity is to turn divine commandments into heartfelt petitions to Hashem, thus achieving a deeper connection and fulfillment of divine will.Download our learning pamphlet here, our special English version here feel free to reach out to us by email or by WhatsApp. Subscribe to our WhatsApp status for exclusive updates, short clips and more. The ultimate goal is to understand Reb Nassim's teachings in Likutey Halachas, which relate to the Kabbalistic idea of creation as described in a Medrash about Adam and Chava. The script explains how Adam and Chava's creation and separation serve as a metaphor for the process of divine creation and human consciousness. It touches on the concept of Tzimtzum, the illusion of separateness in creation, and the purpose of achieving oneness with the divine. The episode emphasizes the practical implications of these teachings as brought down by the Baal Shem Tov and Reb Nosson within the context of Chassidus, focusing on Tefillah and the role of Malchus in divine speech and creation.Chapters00:00 Introduction 00:04 Overview of the Learning Journey00:47 Kabbalistic Insights on Creation01:44 Metaphor of Adam and Chava02:28 Human Consciousness and Divine Unity06:04 Reb Nosson's Chassidic Interpretation

I am very excited to present my conversation with Chava Green, a women's studies scholar and a Chassidic Jew. Chava's dissertation, “the Hasidic face of feminism," explores how the idea of feminism expresses itself in the Chabad community, both through the Rebbe's teachings and in the lives of Chabad women. In our conversation, Chava and I define feminism and discuss this seemingly paradoxical idea of a "Chasidic Feminist." We hear about her journey to becoming a Chasidic feminist, and dive a bit deeper into her research. We touch on some common struggles that many Jewish women face and how the Rebbe spoke to those challenges. We also speak about sheitels (wigs) and cleaning help, among other things-this is a must-listen! A bit more about Chava: Chava Green received her PhD in Religious Studies from Emory University in May 2024. She has a BA in Women's and Gender Studies from Rutgers University–New Brunswick. In between her undergraduate and graduate work, she lived in Israel for two years studying Judaism in Jerusalem and Tzfat (Safed).  Chava lives in Philadelphia with her husband and three children. This coming year she will be a visiting scholar at UPenn in the Jewish Studies department while also teaching classes in the Chabad girl's high school. We begin the Fifth book of the Torah this week, thebook of Devarim. We have mentioned many times that the Rabbis teach us thatthis book made up primarily of Moshe Rabeynu's final speech and testament wasan optional book to be included at Moses discretion. The first three portionsfeature Moses narrating a brief history of the past four decades to those aboutto enter the land (see our short class on Deravim, memory and Tisha BeAb). The Rabbis teach us that these words refer to placesand hint at where the Jews sinned in the desert. But then Moses adds one moreplace, “Di Zahav.” There was once a gaon, philosopher and kabbalist,Rebbi Yehudah Aryeh of Modena z”l (1571-1648) who has a book called “Ari Nohem”and responsa. This gaon was graced by Hashem with a great talent for learning, his was literally a fulfilment of the passuk, “the words of his palate aresweet and he is all delight” [Shir HaShirim 5:16]. He lived in Venice andduring his time there was a huge bet knesset in the city which could seat athousand men. On Sunday the gabbaim came to the rav's home. Theysaid to him, “Kavod harav we have brought you something, not chas veshalom as apayment, for it is impossible to paid his honor for the words more preciousthan gold and fine gold, just a token due to ‘appreciation', we brought hishonor a gold watch!” The rav saw and accepted the watch. The gabbaim said tohim, “Kavod harav, his honor saw how much the congregation benefitted from hiswords on Shabbat, do us a favor for Hashem's sake and darshen before us alsothis coming Shabbat, this is a matter of meriting the many!” The rav responded,“I cannot! It is difficult for me to make the journey to you on Shabbat!” Thegabbaim said to him, “How hard is it? Since this Shabbat his honor already cameto us, if so, just like on one Shabbat his honor was able to walk, so shall hedo also on this coming Shabbat!” The rav answered them, “Fine, I will come alsothis Shabbat! One Shabbat and that will be enough!” On the next day, Sunday, again the gabbaim arrivedat the rav's home, they said to him, “Kavod harav the payment which his honoris entitled to has no bounds, but we have just brought a token gift, theyproduced an expensive chandelier and presented it to the rav.” Immediatelyafterwards they again pressured the rav that he come again on the next Shabbatto the bet knesset to darshan for a third time since “a three-ply cord Is noteasily severed” [see Kohelet 4:12] and the rav's words in a further derashah willcertainly make a tremendous impression! The gabbaim were astonished. “What's the connection? Why is the rav not prepared to accept the gifts?” The rav replied to them, “Iwill respond with a parable. A person entered a watch shop. He was interestedin a unique expensive gold watch, he paid the full price and immediately infront of the seller he took the watch and threw it on the floor smashing it athis feet! The shop keeper won't be angry with such a person, since he paid forthe watch, on the contrary perhaps now he will buy another watch! ‘The analogy is as follows. I see that I gavederashot in the bet knesset three times. Indeed, the congregation wereattentive and very much enjoyed them, but I didn't notice that the wordsinfluenced them to change their ways, and why is this? Because they know thatthe gabbaim took money from the congregation's funds, and bought gifts from it!If so, the feeling of the congregation is that they paid me for the derashot! And now they don't care to address things in a practical level! In contrast tothis, when I speak for free and the congregation hear the derashah and theyknow that I don't receive payment for it, they won't be brazened to despise thematters, the rav stands and makes every effort in his old age to darshan, surely, they will learn that they must change their ways!” I would like to share an alternative answer as wellbased on a reading of the Gemara in Berachot which tells us that We must clarify: What is the meaning of and DiZahav? The Sages of the school of Rabbi Yannai said that Moses said thefollowing before the Holy One, Blessed be He, to atone for Israel after the sinof the Golden Calf: Master of the Universe, because of the gold and silver thatyou lavished upon Israel during the exodus from Egypt until they said enough[dai]; it was this wealth that caused Israel to make the Golden Calf. A grandson of Michel Yehuda Lefkowitz zt”l,a Rosh Yeshiva of Ponovezh in Bnei Brak, bought a gift for his grandparents – abeautiful mirror nameplate for their front door, completely customized with theHebrew name “Lefkowitz” engraved – a standard household ornament in Israel. However, a few weeks went by and the front door remained bare. Lefkowitzdid not put up the nameplate. Rav Binyamin Kamenetzky, zt”l offers thefollowing explanation. Before the evil inclination, yetzer horah, became a partof man's inner being, man was pure. He was able to withstand the pressure anddesires for physical pleasure and possessions. But after Adam sinned by eatingfrom the Tree of Knowledge, the evil inclination became part of him, and theinfamous daily struggle of man began. Who is strong enough to say enough? Only greatrabbis? No! I give tremendous credit to our children whosacrifice much to make Eretz Yisrael their home. In many ways, life is moreluxurious, care free and monetarily richer in the United States, but they andthose who have made Aliyah have in essence said, “di Zahav” – enough. This issomething human beings are rarely capable of doing. They have reached back tothe soul within them which connects to the soul of Adam before the sin. Andthis deserves, blessing, protection and the promises of Mashiach. They shouldbe blessed in happiness as Adam and Chava in Gan Eden. They should be blessedwith parnassa, health, peace and prosperity and through their sacrifice andexample, Hashem should bring Eliyahu as He promised!

In this episode of the 18Forty Podcast, we talk to Chava Green—an emerging scholar who wrote her doctoral dissertation on “the Hasidic face of feminism”—about how the Lubavitcher Rebbe infused American sensibilities with mystical sensitivities, paying particular attention to the role of women. Some stereotype mysticism as something out of this world. But the Lubavitcher Rebbe showed us the importance of having mysticism inform our everyday lives, emphasizing the cosmic impact of the mitzvos done by men, women, and children. In this episode we discuss:Was the Rebbe really “the biggest feminist”?How did the Lubavitcher Rebbe's mysticism translate to the lived experience of his followers? How did Green come to be a self-identified Hasidic feminist? Tune in to hear a conversation about how both the Jewish and feminist worlds contain a wider range of ideas than one might expect. Interview begins at 8:55.Chava Green is a writer, teacher, and perpetual student. After graduating with her B.A. in Women's and Gender Studies, she attended Mayanot Women's Program in Jerusalem and Machon Alta in Tzfat. She is currently pursuing a doctorate in Jewish studies at Emory University and lives with her family in Morristown, New Jersey. Her work considers the relationship between Chabad teachings and feminism.References:Hidden Heretics: Jewish Doubt in the Digital Age by Ayala FaderMitzvah Girls: Bringing Up the Next Generation of Hasidic Jews in Brooklyn by Ayala FaderMystics, Mavericks, and Merrymakers by Stephanie Wellen LevineSocial Vision: The Lubavitcher Rebbe's Transformative Paradigm for the World by Philip WexlerChava Green on Chabad.orgBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/18forty-podcast--4344730/support.
