Paris's status as a cosmopolitan hub for artists from all over the world was forged in the 20th century, particularly in the postwar period, when it was seen as a beacon for Black artists and intellectuals fleeing colonisation, racism and segregation in their countries of origin. The "Paris Noir" exhibition at Paris's Pompidou Centre is now exploring that pivotal moment when the French capital served as a crossroads for the major Black figures who were debating and designing a post-colonial future. The show features 350 works by 150 artists of African heritage – many of whom have been historically sidelined or forgotten – in an attempt to re-write these "unrecognised and fundamental" contributions into a more complete history of art. In this programme, we meet American musician and composer Josiah Woodson, whose move to Paris 12 years ago broadened his artistic horizons, collaborating with artists from West Africa and the Caribbean. He tells us why author James Baldwin was a "major poetic and ideological inspiration" in his own trajectory, and why stepping into the footsteps of legendary trumpet players like Miles Davis was an important part of his transatlantic shift. Author and journalist Yasmina Jaafar explains why African Americans, in particular, chose Paris in the context of 1940s geopolitics and cultural trends. The growing popularity of jazz was one of the major draws for the many Black musicians who performed in Paris in the post-war years. One of the key venues in that effervescent scene was Le Bal Blomet: established in 1924, it is the oldest jazz club continuously operating in Europe today. Its director, Guillaume Cornut, tells us how the local Martinican community would organise informal concerts and gatherings in the 1920s, which gave rise to its nickname "Le Bal Nègre", and how the dancehall became renowned for the diversity of the music on offer.Historian Ludovic Tournès explains how differing attitudes to jazz in the United States and Europe meant that many African American musicians were keen to pursue their careers in Paris, where audiences and music industry figures demonstrated a respect and appreciation for the art form that stood in stark contrast to the reception many of these performers got in the segregated states of the American South. We meet Kévi Donat, whose guided tours of "Paris Noir" reveal the Black politicians, artists and writers who have been integral to the history of both Paris and France, but who have not always gone down in history to become household names. Kévi shines a light on some of the racist struggles that even a celebrated author like Alexandre Dumas came up against, and how a conference at the Sorbonne in 1956 distilled the growing consciousness of a "Panafrican" movement, uniting various Black communities on three continents.Artist Valérie John tells us why leaving her island of Martinique was a pre-requisite in the 1980s as she pursued her studies at art school in Paris. Having been commissioned to create a site-specific installation for the "Paris Noir" show, Valérie expands upon the concept of a Black Atlantic, and the potent symbolism this expanse of water evokes, explaining how the legacy of the slave trade has informed the Black experience in all of the colonies established at its edges. Finally, Alicia Knock, a curator of modern and contemporary art, discusses her efforts to fill a "major gap" in the Pompidou collection by putting together the "Paris Noir" exhibition and pushing for the acquisition of at least 50 of the pieces on display. She explains why the inclusion of these artworks will open a new chapter in the museum's history once it opens again in 2030, after the 50-year-old building undergoes extensive renovations.

In this episode of Love and Murder, I tell you a case out of Evansville, Indiana, that will leave you shaking your head. A two-month-old baby was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, weighing only six pounds—far below what he should have been. Doctors were horrified by what they saw, comparing his condition to something out of a nightmare. But here's the thing—his mother, Cristen Donat, didn't seem concerned at all.How does a baby end up in this condition? What really happened inside that home? And when the case went to court, why did the punishment (or lack of it) leave everyone outraged? You don't want to miss this one. Listen now and then answer my question:Do you think she could be rehabilitated, or do you think she deserved a harsher punishment?Tune in to hear this retelling and share your thoughts on the case.Don't forget to subscribe to our podcast for more true crime stories and updates. Starting a cash-based practice takes courage, trust, and a deep sense of purpose. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Marcela Donat, PT, a passionate physical therapist working with women and children, to talk about her journey to launching her own practice. She shares what it was like to take the leap into entrepreneurship, how she navigated challenges along the way, and the mindset shifts that helped her build a business she loves. We also discuss the importance of embracing change, trusting yourself even when doubts creep in, and finding the right support system as a solopreneur. If you've ever felt torn between staying in a job that feels safe and stepping into the unknown of business ownership, Marcela's story will inspire you to push past fear and take action.--Follow me on Instagram: @drmorganmeese | Join my Facebook Group: DPT to CEO | Ready to start your own cash based practice?

What's the difference between struggle and choice?Today I want to introduce you to Donat, Dona is the kind of man that you meet and instantly feel like you have been friends for a long time, he speaks to you without judgment or fear, and listens with sincerity and intention I met Donat back in the winter during dive training in Rijeka, and immediately was made aware of his genuine acceptance and care for others. So getting to spend time with not only him but also his beautiful family during my recent time in Croatia, I was so excited to get to sit down and let you guys hear a bit of who he isWe chat about what it means to find joy in another's success, about the difference between talking, complaining, and taking action, how people often fear what they don't understand, and how he often prefers when others don't believe in himHe shares how he has grown up in the sea, how as far back as he can remember he was always diving, how he wishes we were doing more to protect the ocean and how he has seen so much decline even in his own lifetime in its healthWe talk about what it would be like really know what others think of us, how important it is to be able to hear something without fear and making our own determination on the weight another's words should have, and the importance in valuing honesty and dedication to something no matter what that looks like for someone else Donat is a man that in my opinion takes things as seriously as they should be, he pushes himself hard, and gives everything he can towards the things that matter to him, and holds balance in being able to not give weight to the things that have no right to hold us down, he's a friend, a father, a husband, and human I respect and value a lotSo tune in today and meet Donat, someone that reminds us all to not fear what's said, to not fear difficulty, and to find joy in the days we are givenAnd to you Donat thank you, thank you for the way you welcomed me immediately as a friend, shared time and space with me, for your encouragement and support as I continue on my diving journey, for speaking English to my overloaded brain;), and for the honor of getting to know you more. You are a gem of a human my friend @donatfaraguna
It is very common for people to look around and see other people's blessings and feel bad that they aren't sharing the same success. We tend to look at financial gain as the ultimate blessing and can't help but wonder why people who aren't observant are doing so well in that area. There is so much more to life than money. We have no idea what is going on in other people's lives. Financial gains does not mean that the person is living a blessed life. The main rewards for our avodah are in the Next World. But even here, Hashem has so many meaningful ways of blessing people beyond what money could ever buy. Rabbi Yechiel Meir Tzudker told a story about a man named Mr. Donat who received a share in the first public transport company in Israel, called Shachar as part of his immigration privileges. For Donat, this was a marvelous stroke of good fortune. In time, Shachar merged with HaMikasher, another transportation company, forming the iconic Egged Bus Service and shares skyrocketed. Just the dividends earned from his share in Egged were sufficient to support Mr. Donat's family comfortably. Yet, this merger resulted in an unforeseen problem for Torah observant shareholders. When the newly founded Egged began operating, a large number of bus lines ran on Shabbat. Now anyone who owned shares in the company would be profiting from chilul Shabbat . Mr. Donat asked the Rav of Haifa, Rav Avraham Yitzchak Klein about what to do. Simply, this was forbidden, but Rabbi Klein wouldn't rule on the matter because there was so much poverty in Israel at the time, and if Mr. Donat would give up his shares, he would most probably have to start collecting to feed his family, which was not a simple matter. It borderlined a question of pikuach nefesh . And so he sent Mr. Donat to the Chazon Ish with the question, saying only the Gadol HaDor could answer such a critical question. At that time, the Chazon Ish was ill and bedridden, but because Mr. Donat traveled for a half a day to get there, they allowed him in to quickly present his question. After hearing it, the Chazon Ish responded with just two words. “ אין אפשרות ” which meant it would be impossible to allow. Mr. Donat heard the Gadol's reply and his heart plummeted. Yet, despite his heartache and fear, he completely accepted the ruling and immediately set out for Egged's main offices. When he arrived, he requested the deed of his share and ripped it into pieces, forfeiting his share in the company and its considerable returns. In that second, Donat was reduced from a man of means to a pauper. Instead of living in comfort, he became a low wage vendor and spent his days lugging around a heavy suitcase, selling soap door to door. But despite all the difficulties, he walked with his head held up high, knowing he sacrificed wealth and comfort to follow Hashem. Even when he turned 80 years old, he was still working hard. While his friends were reaping the benefits of their pensions and living off their savings, old Mr. Donat was still working hard to make ends meet. In his later years, he ended up changing jobs and became a helper in a yeshiva building. One day, he came into the building with a beaming smile on his face. One of the boys there asked him why he was so happy. Mr. Donat replied, “This morning I was walking in one of the upscale neighborhoods on Mount Carmel when I bumped into an old acquaintance of mine, a former colleague from my days in Egged. He recognized me and said, ‘You see all these splendid houses around you? They all belong to veteran Egged shareholders. Look at what you lost when you foolishly forfeited your share. That one share would have been worth millions today. We are all living in beautiful homes with pools and cars while you are still toiling away like a workhorse.'” Mr. Donat continued, “I didn't answer him because he would never understand what I have. Besides for my eternal rewards for what I gave up, tonight I am going to attend my son's Siyum HaShas . This is not any siyum HaShas , my son was tested and knows the entire Shas by heart. Tonight, I'll be sitting with great Rabbis and the room will be filled with my children, children-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom are filled with Torah and yirat Shamayim . You see, Shabbat paid me back ten-fold with the most nachat a person could have in this world.” It is not always about money. There is so much more to life than just dollars and cents.

Happy feast of the Nativity of Our Blessed Mother! Today we learn a hymn from Vespers on the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary Immaculate. As the first verse says, literally: "The supreme teacher of faith [the Pope] solemnly affirms that Mary is free from all stain." This happened in 1854, and the hymn refers to St. Bernadette, who lived after this proclamation, so this hymn isn't older than the mid-to-late 19th century. We hope you enjoy it!Lo! Mary is exempt from stain of sin, Proclaims the Pontiff high; And earth applauding celebrates with joy Her triumph, far and high.Unto a lowly timid maid she shows Her form in beauty fair, And the Immaculate Conception truth Her sacred lips declare.O honored cave, by Mary's smile adorned! O hallowed rock, whence spring The living waters of a gushing stream, The gifts of life to bring. And thither from the farmost bounds of earth The pilgrims wend their way, And suppliant around the Virgin's shrine Her powerful help they pray. The sufferers' cry the Mother fondly hears, And grants the longed-for grace; And health restored, the pilgrim throng returns Unto its native place.O Virgin! have compassion on our needs, Refresh us laboring on; Obtain for us the joys of heavenly life, When sorrow all is gone. All praise and honor to the Father be, And to His only Son, And to the Spirit, power of both, for aye, In Godhead ever One.Omnis expertem maculæ Mariam Edocet summus fidei magister; Virginis gaudens celebrat fidelis Terra triumphum.Ipsa se præbens humili puellæ Virgo spectandam, recreat paventem, Seque conceptam sine labe sancto Prædicat ore.O specus felix, decorate divæ Matris aspectu! veneranda rupes, Unde vitales scatuere pleno Gurgite lymphæ.Huc catervatim pia turba nostris, Huc ab externis peregrina terris Affluit supplex, et opem potentis Virginis orat.Excipit Mater lacrimas precantum, Donat optatam miseris salutem; Compos hinc voti patrias ad oras Turba revertit.Supplicum, Virgo, miserata casus, Semper o nostros refove labores, Impetrans mœstis bona sempiternæ Gaudia vitæ.Sit decus Patri, genitæque Proli, Et tibi compar utriusque virtus Spiritus semper, Deus unus, omni Temporis ævo.
