Chelsea is joined by Smart Bitches Trashy Books host Sarah Wendell to break down Danielle Steel's unhinged 2013 dog memoir “Pure Joy.” Spoiler alert! It's not really about the dogs. They unpack Danielle's SIX marriages, her habit of surprise dog-gifting, and a 20-hour writing schedule that explains everything and nothing all at once. Plus, poop politics and a ranking system for dogs so tough, her first dog didn't even make the dedication page. Today I welcome back Sarah Wendell from the beloved Smart Bitches, Trashy Books blog and podcast. We talk about CRONELIT, in other words, why books that center women of a certain age are having a moment. We also discuss books that address aging within a youth obsessed culture. We offer plenty of recommendations and examples, which I will have in a shopping list in my Bookshop if you want to support both the podcast as well as independent bookstores nationwide at bookshop.org/shop/sheworeblack. At the time of this recording I didn't realize an upcoming book I'll feature on the show, THE UNDERMINING OF TWYLA AND FRANK (by Megan Bannen) centers a widowed woman with grown children finding love with her long-time best friend in weird western zombie fantasy book. It's glorious. Stay tuned for interview with Megan Bannen on that story. Today I have Amanda, the frequent co-host on Smart Bitches, Trashy Books, to talk about Cozy Gaming. I first started playing video games when I heard her and Sarah talking about video games on Smart Bitches, so it felt right to have her on now that I'm a few years into this fun and relaxing cozy gaming journey. We had a great time, and I would love to know what cozy games you like to play or start playing after listening to this episode, so keep me posted! We were devastated to learn of the passing of Julie Garwood, honest to God romance doyenne, last month. Garwood installed many of our buttons, and the buttons of so many romance readers who came up reading “The Four J's,” and, more importantly, paved the way for historicals with humor. She was, without question, a trailblazer. While we were unable to interview her for our trailblazer series, we couldn't let her passing go without an episode, so please enjoy our read along of The Bride, which is a nearly perfect book even now, decades after she wrote it. While our thoughts are with with Julie Garwood's family, her friends, and the legions of readers she delighted over her long and legendary career, our endless gratitude is with Julie Garwood herself—for the laughter, the sighs, and the absolute bangers that were her books. If you want more Fated Mates in your life, you are welcome at our Patreon, which comes with an extremely busy and fun Discord community! The world's a heavy place right now, so after pleasantries about puppies and tattoos, Kris and Tara sit down to talk about the devastating attack on reproductive rights that is the repeal of Roe vs. Wade. There's no jokes about this, it just sucks. Know what else is unacceptable? Sexual harassment of authors. Instead of questions this week, Kris and Tara bring on popular lesfic author, Jae, and Sarah Wendell from Smart Bitches Trashy Books to talk about some all-too-prevalent problem behaviours that authors face, ranging from inappropriate emails to straight-up stalking. Then, of course, Kris and Tara share their recommendations as always. It might seem trivial in light of everything happening right now, but connecting people with queer media and creators is more crucial than ever. Seeing ourselves in the world is vital to begin changing it — and it fucking needs changing. No Ko-fi link today, friends. Please donate to the National Network of Abortion Funds instead. Transcript coming soon Official Recommendations This week, Kris brings us Transhood, a documentary from 2020. Transhood follows four children through their coming-of-age journeys over five years. Tara brings us a few different pieces of media that tell Tig Notaro's story. Tara starts with Tig's groundbreaking album Live, then recommends her documentary, Tig, her autobiography I'm Just a Person, and the show One Mississippi. Tig's health struggles, trauma, recovery and success are expressed beautifully in each, ensuring there's at least one way you can take in her story, no matter your media consumption preferences. Danielle's debut novel is about to head to copyediting and proofreading, she finished the first draft of her WIP, and she planned TWO parties for her daughter's upcoming 7th birthday! This week, we’ve got two tremendous guests and we’re coming to you from four different time zones! Coronavirus silver lining — time has literally no meaning any longer. We’re talking to the brilliant duo Christina Lauren about their new book, The Honey Don’t List, and forced proximity romances — which is a crowd favorite…or at least was a crowd favorite until we were all forced into forced proximity!Next week, we’re reading Victoria Dahl’s Taking the Heat. We know it’s tough to get it in print, but find it in e at your local library or at: Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, Kobo, or in print, mailed from your local indie (which is probably still shipping!)We hope you’re staying safe!Show NotesWelcome Christina Lauren! Check out their new release, a forced proximity romance called The Honey Don't List. Perhpas, like Sarah, you need to understand the "honey do" list.If you're worried about zombies running, there's an app for that.Christina and Lauren said their cover reminds them of Lizzo's big inflatable butt at the 2019 AMAs.Jen wrote a Kirkus column about why "only one bed" is one of the most delightful subsets of the "forced proximity" trope.Amanda Diehl reviews for BookPage and also for Smart Bitches Trashy Books. Here is her inteview with Christina Lauren.Sarah mentioned the great New York City Blackout of 2003, but it turns out a field in Ohio caused the problem."He is poison to everyone but her" is of course a reference back to Sarah's favorite IAD book, Sweet Ruin. All about wheelwrights.Wondering what it's really like for scientists on Antarctica is no place you'd want to be trapped, and certainly no place for a danger bang.Outbreak and Contagion are the top movies on Netflix right now.You can order The Honey Don't List with signed bookplates from Books a Million, not sure directly how to order from the one in Hunstville, AL, but try calling the store. Check out the audiobook of the Honey Don't List, starring Patti Murin and Jon Root. While you're whiling away the hours in self-isolation, don't forget to check out our Spotify playlist, which includes the full versions of every song we've ever used on Fated Mates -- or head over and watch all the music videos of all those songs on our site!
Romance novels get a bad rap, probably due to a history of stereotypical characters, plots, gender roles, and an all-around "trashy" look on supermarket and drug store shelves. But the genre has changed radically, and romance fiction now spans a wide variety of sub genres and writing styles. If you love romance, but not sure where to find the best authors and titles, start with Smart Bitches, Trashy Books, a community co-founded by Sarah Wendell nearly 15 years ago. The site (and podcast) is a social gathering hub that connects voracious romance readers with literature they love, and provides a safe space to gush with other fans. Wendell talks with Alli and Jen about busting romance stereotypes, the power of the Smart Bitches community, and recommends great books for everyone's tastes. https://smartbitchestrashybooks.com Support 2G1P on Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/2G1P Join us on Discord: discord.gg/2g1p Email us: 2G1Podcast@gmail.com Talk to Alli and Jen: https://twitter.com/alligold https://twitter.com/joonbugger Call the show and leave a message!
