In Oregon and the rest of the country, Black infants are more likely to be born underweight, and both they and their mothers have a lower chance of surviving that first year of life than white and Hispanic ones. A package of bills in the Oregon legislature seeks to support perinatal health by expanding access to doulas, protecting young families from housing loss and eviction and expanding the Oregon child tax credit, among other things. Kaylee Tornay, investigative reporter with InvestigateWest, recently wrote about Black maternal and infant health and joins us to explain.

Alfredo Morabia and Prof. Vickie Mays (UCLA) from AJPH interview Dr Sherry Glied, Dean of New York University's Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public and Dr Steven Woolf, Director Emeritus and Senior Advisor, VCU Center on Society and Health about the differences in excess all-cause mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic across the US states. How can we explain the greater excess mortality in states with more conservative governments? Were these deaths preventable and, if so, how? Should governments be accountable for preventable excess deaths?

We're nearing the end of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Here's the good news: breast cancer deaths are declining. A new report from the American Cancer Society finds half a million lives have been saved since 1989. At the same time, breast cancer diagnoses are becoming more common. They're rising fastest in women younger than 50 years old.Amanda Thiesen knows that personally. She got a phone call in 2021 when she was just 39 years old and was told she had stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. Thiesen joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer along with Dr. Amy Krie, an oncologist specializing in breast cancer at Allina Health to talk about the state of breast cancer and research today.
“Cancer” is a dreaded word in the doctor's office. But about 40% of us will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during our lives, the most common being breast, prostate, and lung cancer, according to the National Institutes of Health. But in the last few decades, major progress has been made in the world of cancer treatment and prevention. Cancer death rates have decreased by about 30% over the last quarter century, with some of the largest decreases seen in lung, melanoma, and myeloma cancers. The Biden administration's Cancer Moonshot program aims to reduce the number of cancer deaths by at least 50% by 2050.Early detection methods like mammograms and colonoscopies have improved outcomes for many types of cancer, and new treatment options, like cancer vaccines, immunotherapy, and targeted genetic therapies, have shown promising early results. And the breakthroughs made from the development of the mRNA covid vaccines are bringing even more promise for hard-to-treat cancers.Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee, assistant professor of medicine at Columbia University and author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book The Emperor of all Maladies: The Biography of Cancer, joins guest host John Dankosky to give a broad update on the progress made in cancer treatment and prevention. They also discuss the role AI can play in new breakthroughs, and why some cancers are still particularly difficult to treat.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Watch this episode HERE Jalynn was aware that the medical system was dangerous for her, as a woman, and a black mother. Thankfully, her first birth was fairly straight forward. She left the birth center clear that she would not go back, not because it was traumatic, but because it simply wasn't worth leaving her house for. With her second, Jalynn stepped into full responsibility with a wild pregnancy and the freebirth of her dreams surrounded by sisterhood and support in a community ashram. She fully actualized her dream birth. We're talking about an epic birth space decorated by a dear sister, friends chanting and vocalizing with her during birth, live flute music, and plants infused with affirmations by Toni Jones herself. It was no fear, all flow, with Jalynn completely centered and held by her community, which transitioned into a brilliantly supported postpartum as well. Jaylnn goes on to fully integrate this huge uplevel and leave nursing school to pursue a truly holistic path, which is unfolding and gaining power as she does the work to shine her light and show women the way out of the system and into sovereign birth-work. Here's what you'll hear in Jalynn's Story: ✨Her weariness of the hospital, the racist roots of obstetrics, and the high maternal death rate of black moms. ✨Her desire to find a black woman to support her, but the difficulty she experienced finding midwives of any race to respect and honor her choices. ✨How her first birth sparked an insatiable desire to step into her authentic self. ✨The spiritual confirmation she experienced learning about freebirth and the dangers of ultrasound. ✨Her intuitive self care during her wild pregnancy. ✨Her magical birth surrounded by sisters and fully supported postpartum. ✨Choosing authentic birth education over certified nursing or doula work in the system. ⭐ Matriarch Rising Festival: Get your tickets NOW! - https://www.matriarchrisingfestival.com ⭐ Don't miss the MatriBirth Midwifery Institute, Enrollment opens May 20th!! For example, healthcare providers commonly prescribe statins that lower cholesterol levels and reduce cardiovascular disease risk by inhibiting the enzyme involved in cholesterol synthesis. Similarly, doctors might prescribe antibiotics to target bacterial infections by disrupting the bacteria's growth or killing them outright. But prescription drugs may have multiple uses or indications beyond their original intended purpose. A recent preprint from the biotech startup EPITERNA describes a study exploring the link between prescription drugs and human lifespan. Researchers analyzed more than 40 years of prescription drug data from over 500,000 patients in the UK Biobank to examine how commonly prescribed medications affect mortality risk. Many drugs have negative consequences for lifespan for reasons that include drug resistence, drug dependency, and side effects such as organ damage and immunosuppression—but a number of drugs actually appear to be beneficial for longevity. In this episode, Matt goes over the study's top-performing drugs for lifespan, and discusses how we might interpret and extend these intruiging findings about common prescription medications. New official data in England reveals an alarming and much under-reported phenomenon – significant increases in mortality among children from the most deprived communities over the last two years. What is driving this concerning uptick in the statistics and why has it gone under the radar, both for mainstream society and the church? Also in the news this past week, we respond to the rise in popularity of ‘AI girlfriends'. New software apps allow lonely and frustrated young men to create the virtual girlfriend of their dreams, who is beautiful, sexy, dutiful, constantly available, and endlessly flattering. Maternal mortality rates in Oregon more than doubled in the twenty years from 1999 - 2019. They rose at an even higher rate in the U.S. as a whole. That’s according to a recent study - and the very first to look at rates across ethnic groups state-by-state. The study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association earlier this summer, a collaboration between researchers at the Institute for Health Metrics at the University of Washington and Mass General Brigham. The highest death rates are among Black mothers, and the highest rates of increase are among Native Americans. We talk with co-author Dr. Allison Bryant, an obstetrician and senior medical director for health equity at Mass General Brigham, about the results of the study and what she sees in her own practice.
The mortality rate for Native American women during pregnancy and childbirth have outpaced most other ethnic groups for decades. The latest numbers just published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) show Native maternal mortality far exceeds their white, Black, and Asian counterparts in some states — especially in the upper Midwest. We'll look at the causes and trends for high Native pregnancy death rates and what health professionals say is the solution.

On this West Virginia Morning, during the COVID-19 pandemic, from 2019 to 2022, the state's overdose death rate increased by 67 percent. But it may be returning to where we were before that. Emily Rice has the story. The post Medicare Fraud And Decreasing Overdose Death Rates On This West Virginia Morning appeared first on West Virginia Public Broadcasting.
A recent report in the Journal of the American Medical Association tells us that the mortality rate for children ages one to nineteen increased by almost eleven percent between 2019 and 2020, and an additional eight percent between 2020 and 2021. Most of the upsurge was due to the deaths among older children ages ten to nineteen. The increased rates in this ten to nineteen age group was attributable to increases in suicide, homicide, vehicle accidents, and drug overdoses. Because all of us face the reality of death, it's important that we understand death in light of God's story. Those who are in Christ have great hope in the reality of life after death. Consider these comforting words from the Heidelberg Catechism. What is your only comfort in life and death? That I am not my own, but belong body and soul, both in life and in death, to my faithful savior Jesus Christ! Parents, teach your children the hopeful truths of the Gospel so that they too, might find comfort in life and in death.
