After 20 years, all US troops are now out of Afghanistan. Is that a good thing? Is the war really over? What happens now to our Afghan allies left behind? Will there be any accountability for failure in Washington? After gripping episodes with Matt Zeller, Jane Horton and Kristen Rouse, the newest episode is keeping our focus squarely on Afghanistan. The military pieces, media coverage, political spin, humanitarian need, the human story--we're digging into all of what is happening right now. Our guest has been there. He's a leader for this moment. He just returned from a controversial, unauthorized visit to Afghanistan made alongside fellow veteran and Democrat Congressman Seth Moulton. And he'll take us inside what he saw.  Representative Peter Meijer is a freshman Republican Congressman who succeeded Republican maverick Justin Amash, in the seat representing Michigan's 3rd district. He's fighting for Afghans, he's fighting partisanship, he's fighting his own party, and he's fighting for real change.  After high school, Peter enlisted in the Army reserves and deployed to Iraq with an intelligence unit. After returning, Peter joined Team Rubicon, a veteran-based disaster response organization led by Episode 107 Guest Jake Wood where Peter led humanitarian efforts focused on South Sudan's refugee crisis. He also led operations in New York after Superstorm Sandy, Oklahoma after a series of tornadoes, and the Philippines after Super Typhoon Yolanda. Peter then accepted a job with a non-governmental organization in Afghanistan. He ran the NGO's advisory operations in southern Afghanistan, managing a team to help aid workers provide relief to Afghan people. He later served as acting Deputy Director for Afghanistan, delivering emergency assistance to aid workers after kidnappings and targeted killings. Peter knows Afghanistan, knows national security, knows humanitarian work. And he knows this moment. And you need to hear what he knows. He's fighting for Afghan allies, for accountability around failures of the last month, and for his fellow veterans. He is also fighting with his own party. He was one of only 10 Republicans in the House to vote for the impeachment of Donald Trump. And he's fighting now to repeal the AUMF (Authorization for Use of Military Force), for the truth inside what happened on the January 6th insurrection--and for the soul of the Republican party.   Our host, national security and political analyst and Army veteran Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) has known Peter for over a decade. He digs deep with Pete and breaks down the latest news from a truly independent viewpoint. It's a bold and blunt perspective you won't find anywhere else on the media landscape. US troops have left Afghanistan after 20 years of war. The EU reimposed travel restrictions amid a spike in COVID cases. Famed weatherman Al Roker had a message for anyone thinking he's too old to do live in-person coverage of a major hurricane. A new COVID variant out of South Africa is the most mutated variant yet. A judge ordered a hospital in Ohio to treat a coronavirus patient with ivermectin despite a CDC warning advising to the contrary. Empty-headed Senator Rand Paul blathered something about hatred for Trump being the reason ivermectin research has been blocked. Self-proclaimed Prophet Hank Kunneman warned of dire consequences if Shitler isn't reinstated. Data shows, those arrested for the insurrection on January 6th are treated just fine behind bars. A coronavirus science denier kicked the bucket. The town of Bedford in Virginia is chockablock full of militia thugs. A whacked-out violent anti-masker threatened to kidnap school board members who want mask mandates for schools. GOP load Madison Cawthorn openly fantasized about busting out those detained for the insurrection on January 6th.

Almost two decades since George W. Bush ordered American forces into Afghanistan, the United States has formally ended its military involvement in the country. The occupation, which claimed the lives of more than 2,400 US service personnel, ended shortly before midnight local time, as the final military flight took off from Kabul airport. Sarah Smith speaks to General Jack Keane, former Vice Chief of Staff of the United States Army, about the significance of this moment. The Taliban has said it is not going after people who worked for western militaries or the previous administration. However, there is growing evidence that this is not the reality on the ground. Yogita Limaye reports on the situation for those that have been left behind in the country and now fear for their lives. The show also hears from Sir John Sawers, the former Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service - MI6. Justin Webb asks him about the threat the Taliban's victory now poses to British security.

Here's what he covers: Yesterday, at least 13 members of the U.S. military were killed and an additional 15 were injured as a result of the bombings at Kabul airport. President Joe Biden blamed “major military personnel” for the decision to withdraw from Bagram Air Force Base during the question-and-answer portion of his Thursday address. The Biden administration reportedly gave the Taliban a list of the names of United States citizens, green card holders, and other Afghan allies that needed to be allowed into the airport so they could be evacuated. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki dismissed calls for President Joe Biden to resign in the wake of a terrorist attack in Kabul, Afghanistan that killed 13 U.S. service members, saying that there's no room for politics in the discussion of the tragedy.

Twenty years and counting. 800 billion dollars spent. Over 2,000 US service members killed. America, Canada and NATO's longest war is finally coming to a close as troops begin to withdraw from their bases in Afghanistan this summer. While fully three quarters of Americans applaud President Biden's decision to pull out ground troops completely, many security experts are sounding the alarm. Leaving Afghanistan without a secure national government and strong army in place, they warn, will almost certainly lead to a Taliban takeover, ethnic cleansing, mass slaughter, and the destabilization of a country that has long been a regional powder keg. It's a risky move that would destroy the West's credibility as an ally at the very moment China is on the rise as a global player. Also, without a foreign military presence, the very real risk exists that Al-Qaeda will use the country again as a base to expand their recruitment and plan terror attacks against the US and its allies. Others see 20 years of fighting and little to show for it. The Taliban remains a major force in the country and controls more territory now than it did in 2001. Efforts to build up Afghan forces, install a stable government, and curb corruption ended in failure at great expense of blood and treasure. America, NATO and the West can no longer afford to be Afghanistan's policeman. It's time to end a conflict that is no longer in the national interest. Arguing for the motion is Elliot Ackerman, former US Marine and intelligence officer and best-selling author of 2034: a novel of the next world order Arguing against the motion is Andrew Bacevich, President of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, and author of After the Apocalypse, America's Role in a World Transformed QUOTES: ELLIOT ACKERMAN “The current policy in which the US forfeits the entire enterprise is strategically ill-advised and nearsighted, particularly given current costs, which are relatively minor.” ANDREW BACEVICH “Afghans don't want to be occupied by foreign armies. Afghans want to be the masters of their own fate. I think we should allow them to exercise that privilege.” Sources: NBC, ABC, BBC, MSNBC, Democracy Now!
