I started walking to work at 7:15 this morning, aiming to arrive by 8:00, and decided to record my observations along the way. The route took me through Victoria's familiar streets, past reversing trucks, preserved Victorian facades, and the Johnson Street Bridge, where I paused for photographs. I reflected on a missing senior, Chris Dubé, and the circumstances surrounding his disappearance, while also noting how my heart rate has stabilized since recovering from bronchitis. As I passed landmarks like the dolphin statue and Spinnakers, I appreciated the peaceful morning soundscape of seagulls and helicopters. With my cadence steady and pace averaging 10:32 per kilometer, I concluded the recording after 23 minutes, confident I would arrive on time.
Some of Canada's first craft breweries are here on Vancouver Island - but business isn't booming quite like it used to. In fact, the latest statistics show that per capita beer purchases are the lowest they've ever been in Canada. So we meet up with the folks at two Victoria breweries - Spinnakers and Phillips - to learn how they're branching into the world of non-alcoholic beverages.
Adam begins the show talking about the Epstein list and his reaction to some of the names mentioned. Jodi Miller and Greg Fitzsimmons then join the show and Adam pitches a movie he thinks Rob Schneider would be perfect for. Next, the gang plays a round of Blah Blah Blog. Adam rants about various celebrities and known figures like Shawn Mendez, Alyssa Milano, and Randy Quaid. Next, Chris shares a news story about a local woman pleading guilty to hiring a hitman to kill her husband. Next, the group chats about racing, spinnakers, and boobs. *Recorded live at Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, CA on January 7, 2024. For more with Greg Fitzsimmons: ? See him live: ? When the wind is light and abaft the beam, what you want is a spinnaker. But what type of spinnaker? Nikki Henderson and August Sandberg randomly pick a side in this heated discussion, and tries to convince the other, and the audience, of which is the best version of sailing. Will they succeed? Will they stay on topic? Will the debate devolve into crying and name-calling? Click play to find out!
On EP211 we went back and forth about the line juggling, the D pairings and who'd we rather see in net to start the playoffs. Trevor had a Brown Nut Ale from Spinnakers in Victoria.

In the provincial capital of Victoria, not too far away from friends of the podcast Swan's Brewpub and Spinnakers is another historic brewery. Open in 1996, Canoe Brewpub is located in a historic 100-year-old building close to the Victoria Waterfront by the Johnson Street Bridge. In recent years they've had some major renovations done to the space with some more on the way. I sat down to their Brewmaster Kyle York. Wherein we talk about towels as blankets, getting pillaged at pool, Indiana Jones video games, and movies that slip into the Uncanny Valley. Then we fall into a Bat-Spiral as we discuss the merits of Mask of the Phantasm as the best Batman film, Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill, The Killing Joke animated movie and Batman marrying Catwoman. We also touch on Jurassic World 2, movie trailers that betray the storytellers intent, Shape of Water vs. Blade Runner 2049, and we briefly revist Batman before going through a quite a few recent sad celebrity deaths. We also discuss Spinnaker's Summer Beer Launch party and debate which of their new lineup is the best. Is it the Iced Tea Pale Ale, Raspberry Lager or Peach Paradise Hefe? Final vote was divided but we did agree they all make a great refreshing summer beer. Or as Ron always judges them: "They're all perfect lawn mowing beers". This episode was sponsored by Spinnakers (http://www.spinnakers.com/) and features returning guest Nic, who used to work at Spinnakers! It's almost like we planned it.

The Pod Couple and Dougems band together to try some amazing chocolate milk stouts in the Beer War's Podcast. Spinnakers Chocoholic Chocolate Milk Stout goes up against Wolf Brewing's JinglePot #2 Chocolate and Quince Milk Stout. Spinnakers says it well 'There is more to the relationship between chocolate and beer than tastes and indulgences both being prehistoric from an ancient past. It is impossible to know which came first but here we present these two fermented foods in a modern relationship designed to last until the last drop.' May the best beer win. Cheers. 0:00 - 14:13: A trip to the baseball game at Royal Athletic Park leads to a quick review of Spinnakers' "Original Pale Ale," which in turns leads to a good old fashion bitch session about why alcohol costs so much at restaurants and... well... ball parks. Resident cork dork Rod Philips gives us answers. 14:13 - 23:40: Wine gifting etiquette. When giving, or receiving, a wine at a dinner party of other function, is it expected that the wine be used as part of the night? Don't do what Ryan did and horde the good stuff when he gets a wine gift, like he did with a bottle of 90-point "Monasterio de Las Vinas" Garnacha-Tempranillo from Spain (which we review, since it came up). 23:40 - 38:26: We feature Vancouver Island sparking wine. Apparently, the region's climate is perfect for this style and some wine makers are trying to capitalize on that with under the name "Charm de L'ile." We try the Averill Creek "Charm de L'ile" from Duncan. Thumbs up! And, hot tip, buy it as a farmer's market for $18. 38:26 - 44:25: Pick of the Week! It's the Cote Mas Rosé from France's Languedoc region. $13.99 for 1-litre at BC Government Liquor Stores.
