Excited to share this episode with you. There are some emotional moments in this episode. Our guest this week is a Servant Leader who helps leaders win at work and win at home! I've seen Brian McRae positively impact hundreds of people that I know, including myself. For years I prayed for a mentor in my business life. God answered that prayer in spades in his time, not mine. Brian IS one of these mentors that God brought into my life. Truly an answered prayer. Study, practice and teach is a theme in this podcast. What's the best way that you learn? For me, it's when I teach. -Who do you spend time with? Who do you allow to influence your life and your decision making? -Do you have a mentor or faith group in your life? -Are you living for Success or Significance? Check out Galations 5:22 -What's one thing that I learned from Brian that I do everyday that I do every day that has helped my life and my marriage? -What is the new AI? We talk about how John Ruhlin (Giftology, friend and former guest on the podcast) was an Ambassador for Christ through his thoughts, words and actions and how he was able to weave Christ into conversations and plant seeds all the time. Yes, that IS Blake Brewer (Legacy Letter) in this episode's podcast picture with Brian and I. Brian introduced me to Blake years ago and I'm so grateful for that! In this deeply moving and insight-rich episode of Gratitude Through Hard Times, host Chris Schembra welcomes Sara Hardwick, the Community Relationship Strategist at the Gift•ology Group and steward of the late John Ruhlin's enduring legacy. What begins as a conversation about gifting quickly unfolds into a masterclass in human connection, spiritual resilience, and the transformative power of long-game generosity.Sara shares her unexpected journey into this world of relational marketing—how a nudge from her college roommate and a single Google search led her to John's work, and how her bold outreach blossomed into a mentorship, a career, and a calling. Chris and Sara reflect on how the principles of Beyond Gift•ology are not just business strategies—they're spiritual frameworks for living well, loving deeply, and leading with purpose. The episode pays tribute to John Ruhlin, a father, husband, and business visionary who turned gifting into an art form and relationship-building into an enterprise. John passed away in 2024, but his wisdom—"Relationships can take you places marketing can't"—lives on in the systems, stories, and spirit that Sara now helps shepherd to the world.Together, Chris and Sara unpack practical strategies from Beyond Gift•ology: how to build a business based on Return on Relationship (ROR), how to gift without branding or ego, and how to become what Adam Grant calls a “strategic giver”—someone who gives generously and wisely without burning out. They explore the nuances between swag and soul, between a gift that gathers dust and a gift that transforms a relationship, and between a one-off act of kindness and a lifestyle of sustained generosity. Sara also speaks vulnerably about her faith journey, how her relationship with God guides her every decision, and how grief, gratitude, and giving are all connected.Chris draws parallels between his own work at the dinner table and John's commitment to elevating relationships through thoughtful gestures. They explore how tiny, consistent acts—handwritten notes, engraved knives, warm introductions—create ripple effects that build not just revenue, but legacy.Whether you're a founder, a sales leader, a service-based professional, or simply someone who wants to live more intentionally in your relationships, this episode offers a generous mix of soul and strategy. It's a reminder that business doesn't have to be cold, marketing doesn't have to be manipulative, and giving—when done well—can be your greatest competitive edge. What You'll Hear in This Episode➤ A Powerful Opening TributeChris opens with a personal story of how a 20-minute call with John Ruhlin in 2017 changed his life. That call turned into a two-and-a-half-hour conversation, a lasting mentorship, and the permission to go “all-in” on human connection.➤ Sara's Origin Story: From College Gifting Club to Gift•ology LeaderYou'll hear how Sara's best friend Chloe encouraged her to Google “gift giving company”—a search that led to John Ruhlin's work and, eventually, to Sara founding the internet's largest gifting community while still in college.➤ The Long Game of Generosity: ROR > ROISara and Chris dive deep into the difference between Return on Investment (ROI) and Return on Relationships (ROR). Sara explains why short-term thinking in business keeps us stuck—and how giving first, without expecting anything in return, can actually become your greatest long-term growth engine.➤ Gifting as Strategy, Not SwagSara outlines the key rules of strategic gifting:It's not about you—it's about the recipient. No logos, ever. Personalize for their life, not your brand. Love on the inner circle—spouses, kids, even the family dog. Focus on “practical luxuries” that create 5,475+ moments of thoughtfulness over time.➤ The Rise of the Rich Relationship SocietySara introduces the R.I.C.H. framework:Reciprocal Influential Connected HumbleShe shares how this system is designed to help entrepreneurs and service-based professionals build referral-based businesses rooted in trust, warmth, and mutual growth.➤ Jesus, Dinner Parties, and the Divine Power of a KnifeIn one of the most personal moments, Sara credits her faith—and specifically, her renewed relationship with Jesus—as the compass guiding her work. They connect the dots between Jesus' Last Supper, dinner tables as sacred community spaces, and how something as simple as a personalized kitchen knife can become a legacy of love.➤ Beyond the Business Tactic: Legacy as the Ultimate ROIThe episode closes with a powerful reminder: while gifting is a strategy, true generosity is a posture of the heart. Sara shares that she's not just playing for business success—she's playing for eternity. Key TakeawaysGenerosity isn't a transaction—it's a transformation. Strategic gifting isn't about getting something back immediately. It's about creating meaningful moments that compound over time.Your swag isn't a gift—it's a billboard. The most powerful gifts are useful, personal, and logo-free.Business is human-to-human. In a world overrun with AI, algorithms, and advertising, it's the relationships built at your dinner table—not your Instagram grid—that truly move the needle.Legacy is built in the little things. A handwritten note. A kitchen knife. A prayer. A hug. These are the moments people remember. Links & ResourcesBeyond Gift•ology by John Ruhlin – Buy the bookLearn more about the Rich Relationship Society – giftologygroup.comContact Sara Hardwick – sara@giftologygroup.comConnect with Sara on LinkedIn – linkedin.com/in/sarahardwickGiftology (Original Book) – Buy here

John Ruhlin (1980–2024) was an American entrepreneur, speaker, and author best known for pioneering the concept of strategic gifting in business. He founded The Ruhlin Group, a firm specializing in personalized corporate gift strategies, and authored the best-selling book Giftology, which emphasizes the power of generosity to build lasting relationships. John began his career as a top sales representative for Cutco Cutlery, where he developed innovative approaches to client engagement. He passed away suddenly in August 2024 at 44, leaving a legacy of kindness and a transformative approach to business relationships. In this episode… Standing out in business is more challenging than ever. With overflowing inboxes, advertising fatigue, and increasingly transactional relationships, how can you break through the noise and cultivate genuine, lasting connections with clients and partners? John Ruhlin, author and expert on strategic gifting, shares how intentional, personalized gift-giving can become a powerful business development tool. He explains that gifting is often done wrong — too promotional, poorly timed, or lacking personal relevance. He offers actionable strategies, like making the gift about the recipient (not your brand), targeting the recipient's inner circle, and sending gifts during off-peak times to avoid holiday clutter. John also emphasizes using thoughtful research to personalize gifts and create memorable touchpoints that turn business relationships into emotional connections. In this episode of the Inspired Insider Podcast, Dr. Jeremy Weisz interviews John Ruhlin, Founder of The Ruhlin Group, about the art and science of strategic gifting. John shares how meaningful gifting builds loyalty and generates referrals. He also discusses why timing matters more than cost, how to win over executive gatekeepers, and what happens when a gift goes hilariously wrong.

John Ruhlin is the late founder of The Ruhlin Group, a gift logistics company that helps clients like the Chicago Cubs, Wells Fargo, Caesar's Entertainment, Miami Dolphins, Morgan Stanley, and The John Maxwell Company execute year-round gifting strategies. John's unique approach to relationships led him to become the #1 salesman for a $250 Million direct sales company by the time he was 23 (out of 1.5 Million reps). Prior to his passing, he spoke widely about strategic gifting and relationship building and helps CEOs and sales teams drive referrals and open doors to elusive decision-makers. I'm so honored to share my conversation with the late John Ruhlin with you this week; our discussion is all about the importance of generosity and relationship-building in business. John started by sharing his experiences growing up in a small town, how he came to pursue entrepreneurship, and shares stories of a mentor he had as a young man who taught him the value of building genuine relationships with clients, employees, and their families, and how it led to his business success. He also dives into the importance of giving without expectations and being thoughtful and intentional to foster meaningful connections.  “Show up generously in all areas.” - John Ruhlin “A physical gift is a representation of the value you place on a relationship.” - John Ruhlin  “It's so unusual for somebody to send something to another person, not because they wanted something needed something did something but just to based upon the relationship.” -  John Ruhlin This Week on The Wow Factor: How John learned that generosity and relationship-building are key to success in business Why John used Cutco knives to build relationships and generate leads to become the number one rep in the company's history How John's unique approach of combining thoughtful gifts and personalized notes helped him secure meetings with CEOs at the beginning of his career The mentor that John had as a young man who modeled generosity and thoughtfulness The concept of Giftology and how you can serve businesses of all sizes by modeling generosity and thoughtfulness towards employees, spouses, and suppliers Why it's important to show gratitude and appreciation in business relationships rather than tying it to specific transactions or milestones The methodology John used for surprising and delighting clients and employees through planned random acts of kindness Why the worst gifts to give include logoed clothing and gift cards because they lack emotional connection and depth John emphasizes the value of creating positive experiences for clients' inner circles The importance of understanding human needs and desires when giving gifts, especially when you're giving at scale John Ruhlin's Words of Wisdom: Always give more than is reasonable without the expectation of receiving anything in return. Hey fellas, I wanna thank you for listening to this interview today. It's a very special one, a conversation I had that originally aired back in 2021 with my amazing friend John Ruhlin. Many of you in this community, and many in the entrepreneurial and business world, will know that name, and you likely know that we lost John a month ago suddenly. I've been sitting here at my desk, staring at this microphone, thinking about how I might truly honor this man, what I could say about him, the impact he's had on my life and the lives of so many, how great of a father and husband he was. And honestly, I could be talking for hours. I'll tell you that I knew this man for decades. I was a groomsman in his wedding. He was one of my best friends. A couple of weeks ago, I went back and I was looking at my text messages and emails with him, and every single exchange was him lifting me up, encouraging me, introducing me to somebody. John was at the very first ever Front Row Dads retreat. He's always been there by my side, in my corner. He's such a giver. That's the thing — John was such a giver. He was an incredibly talented businessman, but he's probably an even better family man, a better human. When I was at his funeral, I just walked away realizing how much of a better person I want to be because of this man. I want you to listen to his heart in this conversation. We're sharing stories, talking about our failures and our wins, and that's how it was with John — always the real story. I love his perspective on life. I love his perspective on giving. I'm sharing this interview for a couple of reasons: one, I just want you to know my friend. I want you to hear his message. I think his impact will continue to grow, his legacy will continue to grow. One thing happened recently that I want to share with you. John's business partner of 18 years, a wonderful human named Rod, pledged a commitment to the family to remain business partners with John for the next 18 years. So as Giftology continues to grow, Rod will take care of John's wife and children as 50/50 business partners for the next 18 years. So, friends of John's and people in the entrepreneurial space, we wanted to share John's story with all of you in hopes that, yeah, you know, not only are people going to just use Gift because it's an amazing company, read the book because it's an amazing book, but maybe as a little extra nudge today, in honor of John, go pick up a copy, pick up 100 copies, go visit the website, check it out, because when you engage with the Giftology team, with their services, with the products, you're ultimately supporting John's family. And I wanted to get that message out to all of you. John's work has had a massive impact. If you went to YouTube and typed in his name, you'd see interview after interview after interview. You'll love the essence of John, the heart of John. He was a deep man of faith, a good human. I think about my friend Cameron Harold talking about how he kept trying to bribe John to say a curse word, and he just would never do it. He never said anything bad about anybody. He was the type of person who always led with his heart. He gave so much of himself at all times. Story after story at his funeral was about how many lives he touched and how so many people felt that John was such a good friend to them. And that's what it felt like to be in John's company — you were the only one that mattered in the room. He was all in with you, an incredible presence. I think that was his biggest gift to the world: his presence, his energy, and his spirit. He also taught some really great business principles that you can practice, and you'll know that these are rooted in an extremely high-quality human — John Ruhlin. Again, I don't know what to say, guys. There's so much. But I just want to say thank you for listening today. This has been a very emotional month for me. I left his funeral saying I want to be such a better person. At the same time, over the last several weeks, I found myself being short-tempered with people, maybe angrier than normal. I didn't even know where that came from, but I've experienced all the emotions on any given day. And I question sometimes if I'm doing enough to love on John and his legacy and to support his family. Sometimes I stumble and don't know what to text or email or say in a recording like this because it never feels like enough. But I just want to tell you that this man, someone I love, I hope you enjoy this interview, I hope you laugh, as we do and as we did so many times. And if you feel called or moved, his team put together a document, which you can see at giftologygroup.com/rwa, if you wanted to support the family somehow. There are various ways to do that. But also, if you're a business person, one of the greatest ways you can help is by helping your company and learning some business skills that are going to help accelerate your message in the world, which is what John would want. You'll also be helping his family. So, you can go to giftologygroup.com/rwa, which stands for Referrals Without Asking. That is a program that we want to keep calling attention to right now to honor John and his work, and he wanted this work to be out in the world. So we want to support that. Thank you. I hope you enjoy this conversation. And again, please go give giftologygroup.com and give a look. Some of my favorite moments of the conversation: Why gifting alone can't save a sucky business and adds insult to injury in a struggling marriage. Why the bar is so low in business gift giving - and how to give much more intentional gifts in every area of life. The value of facilitating gift-giving within your family. We're talking 25 employees, 1,000+ cases won, and over $500 million recovered. A bomb-proof unique selling proposition (USP) that speaks directly to her target audience is at the core of her success. By working backward from her ideal clients, Amanda has crafted a brand that's impossible to ignore – think pink branding and high heels that turn heads and win cases. But Amanda's secret sauce isn't just about looks. It's about leveraging what makes you unique to connect with clients on a deeper level. She's mastered the art of using social media as a powerful validation tool, not just a numbers game.  Ready to unleash your own unique power and dominate your market? The focus of this episode is twofold. One is to look at how you are driven to show appreciation to people. How you show love and your motives behind your efforts. The other is some ideas for helping drive people to you. My muse is gift giving. The very concept has a lot of baggage around it. A lot of shoulds and expectations. Our focus here is using gift giving as a tool in your work, but we hit on the personal side as well. This is a message that forever changed my ideas on gift giving, and this conversation was actually recorded a few years ago. My guest is John Ruhlin. John is younger than I am. He has younger kids. And a few weeks ago I got word that on a family vacation, he collapsed, and was never revived. He died. In the wake of his death I saw the outpouring of people whose lives he impacted with his message of gift giving in love, and the heart behind it, and how it benefits us. John was devoted to helping people increase and expand their relationships, with radical generosity. He viewed gift giving as a form of love and was an incredibly influential leader in this space. That's what people felt from John. Love. It was authentic, and he had specific tactics to spread it. That's the conversation you are about to hear. So…in memory of John Ruhlin, and in honor of the love I know you want to spread in your own world, let's drive together for a bit to discuss The Art Of Gift Giving & How To Be Memorable.
