John Ruhlin (1980–2024) was an American entrepreneur, speaker, and author best known for pioneering the concept of strategic gifting in business. He founded The Ruhlin Group, a firm specializing in personalized corporate gift strategies, and authored the best-selling book Giftology, which emphasizes the power of generosity to build lasting relationships. John began his career as a top sales representative for Cutco Cutlery, where he developed innovative approaches to client engagement. He passed away suddenly in August 2024 at 44, leaving a legacy of kindness and a transformative approach to business relationships. In this episode… Standing out in business is more challenging than ever. With overflowing inboxes, advertising fatigue, and increasingly transactional relationships, how can you break through the noise and cultivate genuine, lasting connections with clients and partners? John Ruhlin, author and expert on strategic gifting, shares how intentional, personalized gift-giving can become a powerful business development tool. He explains that gifting is often done wrong — too promotional, poorly timed, or lacking personal relevance. He offers actionable strategies, like making the gift about the recipient (not your brand), targeting the recipient's inner circle, and sending gifts during off-peak times to avoid holiday clutter. John also emphasizes using thoughtful research to personalize gifts and create memorable touchpoints that turn business relationships into emotional connections. In this episode of the Inspired Insider Podcast, Dr. Jeremy Weisz interviews John Ruhlin, Founder of The Ruhlin Group, about the art and science of strategic gifting. John shares how meaningful gifting builds loyalty and generates referrals. He also discusses why timing matters more than cost, how to win over executive gatekeepers, and what happens when a gift goes hilariously wrong.

Hey fellas, I wanna thank you for listening to this interview today. It's a very special one, a conversation I had that originally aired back in 2021 with my amazing friend John Ruhlin. Many of you in this community, and many in the entrepreneurial and business world, will know that name, and you likely know that we lost John a month ago suddenly. I've been sitting here at my desk, staring at this microphone, thinking about how I might truly honor this man, what I could say about him, the impact he's had on my life and the lives of so many, how great of a father and husband he was. And honestly, I could be talking for hours. I'll tell you that I knew this man for decades. I was a groomsman in his wedding. He was one of my best friends. A couple of weeks ago, I went back and I was looking at my text messages and emails with him, and every single exchange was him lifting me up, encouraging me, introducing me to somebody. John was at the very first ever Front Row Dads retreat. He's always been there by my side, in my corner. He's such a giver. That's the thing — John was such a giver. He was an incredibly talented businessman, but he's probably an even better family man, a better human. When I was at his funeral, I just walked away realizing how much of a better person I want to be because of this man. I want you to listen to his heart in this conversation. We're sharing stories, talking about our failures and our wins, and that's how it was with John — always the real story. I love his perspective on life. I love his perspective on giving. I'm sharing this interview for a couple of reasons: one, I just want you to know my friend. I want you to hear his message. I think his impact will continue to grow, his legacy will continue to grow. One thing happened recently that I want to share with you. John's business partner of 18 years, a wonderful human named Rod, pledged a commitment to the family to remain business partners with John for the next 18 years. So as Giftology continues to grow, Rod will take care of John's wife and children as 50/50 business partners for the next 18 years. So, friends of John's and people in the entrepreneurial space, we wanted to share John's story with all of you in hopes that, yeah, you know, not only are people going to just use Gift because it's an amazing company, read the book because it's an amazing book, but maybe as a little extra nudge today, in honor of John, go pick up a copy, pick up 100 copies, go visit the website, check it out, because when you engage with the Giftology team, with their services, with the products, you're ultimately supporting John's family. And I wanted to get that message out to all of you. John's work has had a massive impact. If you went to YouTube and typed in his name, you'd see interview after interview after interview. You'll love the essence of John, the heart of John. He was a deep man of faith, a good human. I think about my friend Cameron Harold talking about how he kept trying to bribe John to say a curse word, and he just would never do it. He never said anything bad about anybody. He was the type of person who always led with his heart. He gave so much of himself at all times. Story after story at his funeral was about how many lives he touched and how so many people felt that John was such a good friend to them. And that's what it felt like to be in John's company — you were the only one that mattered in the room. He was all in with you, an incredible presence. I think that was his biggest gift to the world: his presence, his energy, and his spirit. He also taught some really great business principles that you can practice, and you'll know that these are rooted in an extremely high-quality human — John Ruhlin. Again, I don't know what to say, guys. There's so much. But I just want to say thank you for listening today. This has been a very emotional month for me. I left his funeral saying I want to be such a better person. At the same time, over the last several weeks, I found myself being short-tempered with people, maybe angrier than normal. I didn't even know where that came from, but I've experienced all the emotions on any given day. And I question sometimes if I'm doing enough to love on John and his legacy and to support his family. Sometimes I stumble and don't know what to text or email or say in a recording like this because it never feels like enough. But I just want to tell you that this man, someone I love, I hope you enjoy this interview, I hope you laugh, as we do and as we did so many times. And if you feel called or moved, his team put together a document, which you can see at giftologygroup.com/rwa, if you wanted to support the family somehow. There are various ways to do that. But also, if you're a business person, one of the greatest ways you can help is by helping your company and learning some business skills that are going to help accelerate your message in the world, which is what John would want. You'll also be helping his family. So, you can go to giftologygroup.com/rwa, which stands for Referrals Without Asking. That is a program that we want to keep calling attention to right now to honor John and his work, and he wanted this work to be out in the world. So we want to support that. Thank you. I hope you enjoy this conversation. And again, please go give giftologygroup.com and give a look. Some of my favorite moments of the conversation: Why gifting alone can't save a sucky business and adds insult to injury in a struggling marriage. Why the bar is so low in business gift giving - and how to give much more intentional gifts in every area of life. The value of facilitating gift-giving within your family. Childhood wounds that stick with us into adulthood. Get the Full Show Notes Want access to the full show notes, including links to all resources mentioned during today's conversation? Giftology isn't just about giving gifts. It's about understanding that at the heart of every great business relationship lies the human connection, which is nurtured by acts of radical generosity. John Ruhlin, the visionary behind Giftology and founder of Giftology Group, was a leading authority on the power of using gifts as a business tool. His vision transformed the way companies think about and approach strategic gifting. Through his work, John helped countless businesses, from small startups to large corporations, use gifting to deepen connections with clients, employees, and partners, driving loyalty and business growth. Tragically, John passed away 3 weeks ago. We share this episode, which was recorded 3 years ago but never released until now, to honor his legacy and the profound impact he had on so many lives and the industry as a whole. In this interview, Brad and John discuss why strategic gifting is of utmost importance and share game-changing gifting strategies that will transform any business. Rest in peace, homie. Your generosity will never be forgotten. P.S. Before John died, he created a program called Referrals Without Asking, which is the foundation of everything he's always done. A handful of friends and I are now giving out the program for free to keep his legacy alive

Earlier this week, the world lost a kind and generous soul--John Ruhlin, who died suddenly while on vacation with his family. John was best known as the gifting guru; his company, The Ruhlin Group, helps some of the world's largest companies design thoughtful, impactful strategies for using gifting to forge relationships with clients and partners. He was also the author of Giftology which shared his philosophy of radical generosity, which shaped his interaction with everyone in his personal and professional life. John was also a friend of the show--he was one of the first Elevate Podcast guests, and one of its first repeat guests. We are honoring John's legacy by republishing one of his previous appearances on the show, recorded back in 2020. You'll hear John's remarkable gifting philosophy and quickly understand why he made such an extraordinary impact on others in his tragically short life. John Ruhlin is the Co-founder of Giftology Group and Ruhlin Group, which are gift strategy and logistics companies. He is also the author of Giftology and the #1 all-time distributor of Cutco Knives in its 65-plus year history. As a master gift-giver, John forges lifetime relationships while generating enormous returns for his clients. His impressive list of clients includes the Chicago Cubs, Orlando Magic, the Chicago Bears, and many top entrepreneurs, including Darren Hardy and Cameron Hould. In this episode: Sending thoughtfully chosen gifts can profoundly impact your business relationships. Consider the lasting impression you can create with your clients and network. How can you ensure these gestures authentically resonate with the receiver rather than coming off as clichéd? Gifting strategist John Ruhlin has developed a proven gift-giving process that strengthens relationships with clients and referral partners. Instead of sending gifts for momentous occasions, John emphasizes giving gifts during unexpected times to showcase genuine care beyond obligation. He also advises against branding the gifts with your logo to ensure they capture the recipients' enjoyment rather than serve your marketing strategy. Personalized gifts tailored to your recipients' preferences enhances the relationship-building process and creates loyal customers and partners. In today's Systems Simplified episode, Adi Klevit welcomes John Ruhlin, the Co-founder of Giftology Group, who talks about leveraging customized gifting as a powerful business-building tool. “We started to realize that we're going to become the expert at how to use high level, unique, creative, physical goods to deepen relationships, open doors, and 10X referrals.” – John Ruhlin, Co-Founder of Giftology You can't talk about corporate gifting without John Ruhlin, the Co-Founder of Giftology (and author of the eponymous book), who not only reverse-engineered the idea for his company after seeing gifting strategies take place organically, but actually opted out of med school because of the success he found early on. He joins the show to explain, in great detail, how to leverage gifting strategies to build lasting relationships, company culture, and sales pipeline by leveraging psychology and his tried-and-tested approach. Corey and John dive into the specifics of what makes for a good gift, how to translate the gift receiver's profile into an effective gift (you wouldn't give a Casio to a person wearing Rolex day-to-day), and how to personalize gifts so that they have a lasting impact in the person's life, even becoming family heirlooms And, it's not just the thought and idea of the gift, but the whole experience around it; The personalization, the message, the delivery, the unexpectedness of it all. For one, John's company never sends a gift at the same time twice. And it's that element of surprise that really does the hard work in the process, giving you the 10x or even 100x return on that initial gift investment.Corey and John cover everything from the psychology of gifting to breaking down the who, how, and why of a highly-converting enterprise gifting strategy. Here's what Corey and John discuss in this episode: How Cutco Knives inspired an idea for his business, and how he became one of the highest-grossing sales channels for the brand. The psychology of gifting and why it works in business settings. How to figure out what to invest in gifting. Examples of meaningful gifting strategies, and how it's all about the experience. Here are some actionable key takeaways for agency founders: What is the worth of your relationships? Figure out the value, and gift accordingly. Gifting is not transactional: you don't give to get. It's not about the value of the gift but how it ties into the receiver's core values. Use gifting as a way to show up when you're not having face-to-face with your relationships The resources mentioned in this episode are: Connect with John on Linkedin Here Learn more about Giftology Group Here

I've always believed generosity was supremely underrated. There's something about givers that makes them attractive. There's something about giving that is magnetic. If you're a giver, people are just drawn to you. Think about it. The most generous person in your world, what do you think about when they come to mind? It's probably someone you really admire and want to emulate. This isn't just a great way to live your life. It's also a great way to build your business. The truth is, being more generous is a great way to get more clients, increase retention and cut through the noise. In an effort to bring a bit more generosity this holiday season, I decided to bring John Ruhlin onto the podcast. John is the author of the book “Giftology”, and he's an expert on how we can use generosity to maximize what we get out of our business. So if you're looking for a strategy that will not only put more money in you pocket, but make you feel good in the process, make sure to give this episode a listen. The conversation touches on lessons learned during the pandemic, including the value of remote work and setting boundaries. John mentions his strategy of leveraging technology and being selective about in-person engagements. Tune in for insights on John Ruhlin's journey and the Giftology approach. The Circuit of Success Brett Gilliland: [00:00:00] All right. Welcome to the Circuit of Success. I'm your host, Brett Gilland. Today I've got my buddy John Ruhlin. And John, what's up dude? John Ruhlin: Thanks for having me. How you doing, dude? I'm great. Did you Brett Gilliland: throw up, punch anybody today John Ruhlin: playing basketball? I did. I, I throw, uh, Scotty, so I did. I felt so bad, and then he drained to three and I'm like, I didn't, I didn't throw. Chop 'em hard enough. Exactly. Brett Gilliland: Didn't hit you hard enough, man. Well, uh, you are John Ruland. You are the author of Giftology. You are an advisor, you're a speaker, man. You're going all over the world and, uh, you're making some things happen, man. It's been fun to watch. Well, John Ruhlin: it's, uh, I've been very fortunate. I got a lot of people in my corner, Brett Gilliland: so. Yeah. Yeah. Well, that doesn't just happen by accident, so we're gonna, we're gonna get that out of you today. I know you're a humble guy and you won't wanna chat about it, but it's my job to make you talk about it. You can, we can go anywhere you want to go. All right. Well, uh, if you can though, man, uh, we, we did this about five years ago, maybe five and a half years ago, right? When I was starting the podcast, God, probably almost six years ago. And, uh, now here we are again, but for those people that don't know John Ruland, man, give us a little backstory. What's made you, the man you are today, kind of your upbringing and, and kinda get us [00:01:00] to where we're at now and what we'll talk about here John Ruhlin: in a little bit. Yeah, so I didn't grow up in any, you know, any of the cool towns, LA, Austin, Nashville. I grew up in Ohio Farm kid. 47 acres, you know, milking goats every morning. Uh, so learned what I didn't wanna do the rest of my life. Yeah. Although ironically, we just bought 40 acres. I think I was talking to you about land early on. Um, and just got 20 chickens and it's kind of going back to my roots Yeah. Of, uh, of, you know, the farm, the, the, uh, baling hay, all that kind of stuff. And, uh, I thought I'd go make my mom proud and is gonna go be a doctor, uh, chiropractor, do some something holistic, functional. And, uh, God got ahold of my life. I had had a, a mentor who is a law firm owner and he, when you're poor, you grow up poor. You notice some people are generous, like that just seems weird. And he was always doing things radically, generously. And because of that, he was the most light, trusted and top of mind dude in town. Yeah. Every deal came his way, every referral. And I saw how seeds he had planted 30 years before with no, like, wasn't like [00:02:00] an expectation or like strings attached, like. He would love on somebody, do something. 30 years later, they're in a position of, you know, inherited real estate or whatever it was. And who did they call? They called Paul. Why? Because of the relationship. So I was interning with Cutco at the time, desperate to pay for med school, uh, hoping it would last this summer in my fourth appointment, I pitched Paul the knives and, uh, which is, you know, everybody thinks they have hard, like selling insurance, financial services like pro sports, like.

Yes. 1.5 million. Not only was he gifting knives but he was being asked to speak on stages around the country to teach sales and marketing teams how to build relationships in unconventional ways.
