Happy November! Today is all about our Familiars … our Spiritual Companions & Magical Allies. A witch's familiar, in a traditional sense, is seen as a spiritual entity or animal companion that aids us in our magical practices. Historically, familiars were believed to be supernatural beings, often taking the form of animals like cats, dogs, birds, or toads, and were thought to serve witches by assisting in spellcasting, protecting them from harm, or even carrying out magical tasks on their behalf. Modern witches today often view familiars as spiritual guides. These companions may offer protection, help us focus our energy during rituals, or provide insight through intuitive connection. Familiars often form a deeply personal bond with the witch they assist, enhancing their magical workings and serving as a source of comfort and spiritual companionship. Familiars are not limited to the physical world, as some witches connect with ethereal or spirit familiars, which can act as guides in meditation, divination, and astral work. In the June 2022 issue of Presence Journal, Dr Westina Matthews writes, “We will not attempt to convince another to adopt any view but rather offer a safe and sacred space to share knowledge and to engage in open and honest dialogue about what is usually considered to be a taboo topic.  In spiritual direction, often resisted is the topic of sex, sexuality, and sexual orientation. We have found that both spiritual director and spiritual directee tend to avoid these “taboos,” So why the silence? (We) are convinced it is due to the shame.” How does one begin to overcome this shame?” In this interview, we talk with Dr Matthews about how spiritual directors and companions can begin to create a safe, holy space in their sessions to allow for safe, brave conversations about sexuality. Approaches, icebreakers questions, acknowledging sexual confusion and harm, and understanding sexuality from a contemplative grounding are discussed. --- Dr. Westina Matthews, PhD, is an author, public speaker, retreat leader, and theologian. Recently I had the amazing opportunity to chat with author and teacher Rabbi Rami Shapiro, who has written an article for Presence Journal – the SDI quarterly publication on spiritual direction and companionship. It was meant to just be a quick 15 minute conversation that I could use to create a short video to go with the article in the Online Edition of Presence. Because Rabbi Rami was so generous with his time, and our conversation so fascinating, it ended up going for almost an hour. We talked about spiritual companionship, when our own beliefs and worldviews get in the way of doing this work, Mysticism, embracing the shadow and evil within ourselves, and the necessity of our spiritual work in a rapidly changing world. So in this podcast episode we are releasing the entirety of our conversation. Rabbi Rami is delightful to listen to and I hope you enjoy it. Presence is the flagship publication of SDI. Today's episode focuses on the relationship between Mary and Elizabeth from the devotional “Reflections on the Life of Mary."Dr. Gadson discusses how important it is for us to have spiritual companions throughout life.  We need to see the faithfulness of God in the lives of others. We also need the blessing of their encouraging and equipping us. In order to have healthy spiritual companionships, we need emotionally healthy individuals.  To be in close proximity with others as Mary and Elizabeth were, we need to be safe individuals one for the other.  We need to allow people to ask questions and express their emotions without rebuke. As a healthy body, we also need to be able to support others and not shame them when it is time for them to leave. The members and the body have to do an emotional work to be safe and healthy spiritual companions and a safe and healthy spiritual haven.Information for Dr. Gadson:https://www.drmoniquesmithgadson.com/Link to Order “Reflections on the Life of Mary” devotional: https://www.drmoniquesmithgadson.com/store/p/reflections-on-the-life-of-mary-devotional-bookletLink to order “Session Notes:  Intimate Times with God":https://www.drmoniquesmithgadson.com/store/p/k8psfln7jh72diw8i36txniwi2e05xFollow us on social media: https://www.facebook.com/And-The-Church-Said-Podcast-106848090932637https://instagram.com/drmoniquesmithgadson?igshid=1bmt2hei1j6i8https://twitter.com/DrMoSmithGadsonSupport And The Church Said:Cash App:  https://cash.app/$andthechurchsaidPayPal:  https://paypal.me/andthechurchsaid?locale.x=en_US

Our latest book release from SDI Press is now available – Reflections on Awakening and Maturity for Spiritual Companions, by Genjo Marinello. Genjo’s fascinating book chronicles his lifelong and ongoing commitment to spiritual growth, through thick and thin, as well as a courageous embrace of many difficulties, shortcomings and flaws. Genjo composts all of these into assets, establishing them as the building blocks for his own ongoing spiritual growth and evolution. And by extension, for ours. In the process, he engages with numerous spiritual companions and models, most notably the Buddha, St Teresa of Avila, and the Zen Oxherding pictures. They reveal insights and challenges both easy and joyful, along with some quite difficult and painful. In this conversation, Genjo and Rev. Seifu Anil Singh-Molares discuss the new book. --- SDI Encounters is supported by: EXPERIENCE AN INTERFAITH LEARNING CENTER, A SACRED COMMUNITY, AND A SPIRITUAL HOME AT ONE SPIRIT, TO BE OF SERVICE IN TODAY’S RAPIDLY CHANGING WORLD. Please enjoy this short (10 minute) guided meditation, which I (Matt Whitney) wrote and recorded this week as an offering to spiritual companions. It offers a few specific gratitude prompts, each related to key aspects of our service as spiritual companions. Each prompt is followed by 30 seconds of silence, with a chime sounded to move between each phase. Gratitude is a universal practice of orienting ourselves towards the fact that everything is a gift. Gratitude is, essentially, a posture or a lens through which we see the arrangements and circumstances of our very existence. Do we view the world with a sense of scarcity, and lack, and pessimism? Or do we view it as a place of abundance, and beauty, and hopefulness? We practice gratitude for the good things in our lives, but also for the challenges. Because by being challenged, we are stretched, we soften, and we grow in our capacity to be more compassionate, and we grow in the wisdom of what it is to be human. --- Thank you for supporting the work of spiritual companionship around the world.
