When the world gets chaotic and uncertain, we need spiritual practice more than ever—not just to sustain our souls and restore our inner peace, but to recharge and prepare ourselves to take on challenges with effective action. A few years ago, Philip Goldberg, the author of “Spiritual Practice in Crazy Times” and host of the Spirit Matters podcast. interviewed twelve spiritual leaders to help us get through the pandemic. We're now re-releasing the interviews as an encore series, because the messages are as relevant today as when they first aired. On today's enlightening episode, we welcome the wise and insightful Rabbi Rami Shapiro. Rabbi Shapiro, known for his deep exploration of spiritual truths across multiple traditions, brings a refreshing and inclusive perspective to the journey of spiritual awakening. His story is one of continuous seeking and profound understanding, challenging conventional boundaries and inviting us to explore the deeper essence of spirituality.Rabbi Rami's spiritual journey began unexpectedly during his high school years. As a young Orthodox Jew, he was introduced to Asian civilizations through a course taught by two professors who had spent a summer in India. This exposure to Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism sparked a profound curiosity in him. During a summer meditation by a lake, he experienced a mystical state of interconnectedness and overwhelming love for the universe, a moment that profoundly shaped his spiritual path. He describes it vividly: “I knew that everything was interconnected. Everything was a manifestation of this one dynamic process, which in Buddhism might be called Dharmakaya and in Judaism, God.SPIRITUAL TAKEAWAYSInterconnectedness of All Things: Rabbi Rami emphasizes the importance of recognizing the interconnected nature of all existence. His mystical experience revealed that everything is part of a single, dynamic process, underscoring the need to live with awareness and compassion. “I knew that everything was interconnected,” he explains, pointing to the profound realization that binds us all.Breaking Free from Dogma: Rabbi Rami advocates for a spirituality that transcends rigid dogmas and embraces the wisdom found in diverse religious traditions. He encourages us to look beyond the confines of institutionalized religion and explore the deeper, mystical truths that unite us. As he puts it, “A holy rascal is curious about the deeper meaning of religion, not the self-focused nature of religious institutions.”Meditation as a Path to Truth: For Rabbi Rami, meditation is a crucial practice for connecting with the deeper, non-dual reality of existence. He practices Jewish mantra meditation and believes in its power to shift consciousness from a narrow, ego-based perspective to a more expansive, interconnected awareness. “You just let the mind do what the mind does,” he advises, “and realize you're not the mind.”Rabbi Rami's journey from aspiring Buddhist studies professor to Zen Rabbi is a testament to his belief in the fluidity of spiritual exploration. A pivotal moment came during a retreat with a Zen master who challenged him to pursue rabbinical studies. This unexpected direction led him to blend his Jewish heritage with the universal insights of Zen Buddhism, creating a unique spiritual approach that embraces the best of both worlds. In his teachings, Rabbi Rami Shapiro often speaks of the concept of the "holy rascal"—one who finds the sacred in the profane and the profound in the mundane. A holy rascal, he says, is someone who breaks the rules to get to the heart of spiritual truth, unafraid to challenge conventional wisdom and explore the depths of religious experience. “Religion is much too important to leave in the hands of professionals,” he asserts, highlighting the need for personal exploration and understanding.Rabbi Rami's work is deeply rooted in the belief that all spiritual paths lead to the same ineffable experience of the divine. He draws from various traditions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Christianity, and Islam, seeking the non-dual reality they all point towards. His approach is not about amalgamating different religions but finding the common thread of perennial wisdom that runs through them all.In our conversation, Rabbi Rami shared a profound quote: “There's this teaching that the universe has a hum. It's a musical thing that's happening and you can tune into it. If it's not magic, you just be quiet and listen.” This statement encapsulates his belief in the subtle, yet powerful, vibrational essence of the universe that we can all connect with through stillness and mindfulness.Rabbi Rami Shapiro's mission is to help individuals awaken to their true selves and live in harmony with the interconnected web of life. His teachings are a call to embrace our shared humanity, transcend divisive dogmas, and cultivate a deeper, more inclusive spirituality. Please enjoy my conversation with Rabbi Rami Shapiro.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/next-level-soul-podcast-with-alex-ferrari--4858435/support.

This book investigates Judaism at its best—and sanest. It strips away outdated and harmful beliefs that have accrued over the centuries and returns to the essential truths that are too-often ignored in favor of tradition, tribal identity, or the claims of the powerful. The result is a vibrant Judaism for the 21st century and beyond—a Judaism that draws deeply from history and scripture yet addresses the unmet needs of the present and the future. It is a Judaism that is open and accessible to everyone. Judaism without tribalism is a call to be a light unto the nations, and a blessing to all the people of the earth. It is a Judaism free from legalism and tribalism—a Judaism that refuses to serve patriarchy and power. Written by one of today's most respected—and most unconventional—Jewish thinkers, Judaism Without Tribalism is a manifesto, an invitation to completeness, and a call for inner and outer spiritual revolution. It is also a deeply practical guide to living authentically, breath by breath and day by day. Rabbi Rami Shapiro is an award winning author of over two dozen books on religion and spirituality.. You've heard the call, “I'm not religious, but I am spiritual.” What does that even mean? And, why are so many people running from organized religion, but flocking to some amorphous and ambiguous claim to spirituality that often extends not further than a sense that you yearn for something more? And, is that okay? Or, are we leaving something behind? And, if so, what? Is it a part of ourselves? A sense of wholeness and belonging? How do we reclaim a feeling of connectedness and expansiveness and ease, without also surrendering to the strictures of organized religion that, too often, integrate tribalism, separateness and disconnection from our lived, modern experience? These are the questions we dive into with my guest today, Rabbi Rami Shapiro. Rabbi Rami is an award-winning author of over three dozen books on religion and spirituality, including his latest, Judaism Without Tribalism. In our conversation today, we explore why so many people are leaving organized religion, the distinction between religion and spirituality, the evolution of God and religion, and much more. You can find Rabbi Rami at: WebsiteIf you LOVED this episode you'll also love the conversations we had with Rabbi Steve Leder about the role of faith and how to share our wisdom with future generations.Check out our offerings & partners: My New Book SparkedMy New Podcast SPARKEDVisit Our Sponsor Page For Great Resources & Discount CodesGoing West: Whether you're looking for a new true crime podcast that has minimal side-talk or one that focuses on the victim and their story, you have to check out Going West! Recently I had the amazing opportunity to chat with author and teacher Rabbi Rami Shapiro, who has written an article for Presence Journal – the SDI quarterly publication on spiritual direction and companionship. It was meant to just be a quick 15 minute conversation that I could use to create a short video to go with the article in the Online Edition of Presence. Because Rabbi Rami was so generous with his time, and our conversation so fascinating, it ended up going for almost an hour. We talked about spiritual companionship, when our own beliefs and worldviews get in the way of doing this work, Mysticism, embracing the shadow and evil within ourselves, and the necessity of our spiritual work in a rapidly changing world. So in this podcast episode we are releasing the entirety of our conversation. Rabbi Rami is delightful to listen to and I hope you enjoy it. Presence is the flagship publication of SDI. It comes out four times a year, and is an international journal on spiritual direction and companionship. He earned rabbinical ordination from Hebrew Union College in order to preach his ideas in synagogues, and a PhD in contemporary Judaism from Union Graduate School in order to teach his ideas in universities.Along the way, he's taken Bodhisattva vows in Zen Buddhism, become a 32° Mason in the Scottish Rite, been initiated into the Ramakrishna Order of Vedanta Hinduism, joined the Theosophical Society, published three dozen books, has had his poems included in prayer books and hymnals around the English speaking world, and has walked the 12 Steps of Overeaters Anonymous more times than he can count. Walk into a Christian church that preaches from the Old Testament and then walk into a synagogue that teaches from the Hebrew Bible, the scripture should be similar, right? Well, not exactly. Even though both books are known to depict the same stories, many factors go into how we interpret them. Certain works may be highlighted in one religion or omitted by another. To explore the intricacies of religion and spirituality, Positive Psychology Podcast Host Lisa Cypers Kamen speaks with three authors and religious scholars about the purpose of religion, religious texts, and spirituality. Rabbi Rami Shapiro is a highly decorated, yet unorthodox Rabbi who has studied many religions including Buddhism, Hinduism, and is a Mason in the Scottish Rite.
