Ondrea Levine: Facing Grief with a Merciful Heart

This interview with Ondrea Levine was recorded on October 30th, 2023. Vasu Jon Seskevich and Sitaram Dass traveled to her remote off-the-grid home in the high desert of New Mexico for an intimate conversation about living with an open heart in the face of death and grief.  Stephen and Ondrea Levine were two of the pioneers of the modern conscious death and dying movement and touched the lives of thousands of people worldwide. Stephen died a medication-assisted death on January 17th, 2016 after many years of living with Alzheimers, and Ondrea was his caregiver in those final years. They are the authors of numerous books, including Who Dies, Embracing the Beloved, and A Year to Live. https://levinetalks.com is a way for Stephen and Ondrea to continue their teachings and connect with an outside audience. In the introduction to this interview, Sitaram Dass states, “Stephen and Ondrea spent their entire lives making friends with death, and as Ondrea approached the end of her life after experiencing the death of Stephen, I wanted to know what insight she might have to share.  “Her matter-of-fact transparency, immediate warmth, humility, compassion, and wisdom left me in awe, but also as if I had just met an intimate friend. This meeting was truly a gift, and I am excited to share it with you.”  ***HELP ONDREA FIX HER SOLAR POWER SYSTEM***  Recently, Ondrea's solar power system and backup generator both unexpectedly broke down. These systems are essential for her daily living, providing the necessary power for heating, cooling, water, and other vital functions in her off-the-grid home.  The sudden failure of these systems has left her in a vulnerable position, making it difficult to manage her health and maintain her home. A Gofundme was set up to help Ondrea repair her solar power system and generator, ensuring she can continue to live safely and comfortably in her home. Your support will make a significant difference in her life, providing her with the stability she needs during this challenging time.  https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-ondrea-fix-her-solar-system   Credits and Links: Featuring:  Ondrea Levine https://levinetalks.com Interviewers:  Sitaram Dass https://sitaramdass.com   Vasu Jon Seskevich https://jonvasu.com  AV Production and Filming:  Kiki Love Productions https://kikiloveproductions.com  Video Editing:  zander cole karlin https://zandercole.carrd.co  Intro Music:  Carl Golembeski https://www.instagram.com/mirarimusic   Archival footage used with permission from Levine Talks The Sacred Community Project is an interspiritual collective working to awaken Sacred Community in the world. This audio from Sitaram Dass was recorded during SCP's first Sacred Community Retreat in the summer of 2023 on Salt Spring Island in British Columbia. In this talk, Sitaram recites a variation of the SCP invocation that opens every single SCP "Satsang Hang," and he discusses its importance and how Sacred Community is "Loving-Awareness practiced together." In the introduction for this episode, zander, one of SCP's group facilitators and host of baby teeth podcast, speaks on their experience with the online Satsang Hangs and how the invocation creates a container to "enter into this practice of Sacred Community" through authenticity, presence, compassion, and a group intention to "nurture our souls." SCP will be hosting two retreats this year, and registration is now live for the 2024 Spring Retreat at Just Love Forest outside of Atlanta, Georgia. For the next hour we each agree to attend to five things: ourselves, each other, the group, the world, and the shared Presence unifying it all. We do this as an act of devotion, knowing that God is manifest in all five. We tend to ourselves by being mindful of our thoughts, feelings, triggers, and motivations and by leaning into authenticity, vulnerability, and courage. We tend to each other through attentive, compassionate, non-judgmental listening, by letting go of the desire to fix others or give unsolicited advice, and by leading with appreciation and curiosity. We tend to the group by ensuring that space is evenly shared and that everyone has an opportunity to offer their voice. We tend to the world by acknowledging we are not separate from collective sorrow, collective aid, or systemic influences associated with race, class, gender, sexuality, or ability. We tend to communal Presence by actively cultivating sacred silence and by holding our identities, roles, and ideologies lightly, so the soul can shine through. With this invocation, we ask that the Universal Guru guide us as we enter into this Sacred Space together. We now invite in silence and encourage anyone who feels called to share, to share. -------- Sitaram Dass (K. Sandin, LCSW) (he/him) spent several years serving his beloved teacher Ram Dass on Maui, where he was shown the path of Bhakti, the yoga of service and devotion to God. He is an experienced kirtan leader, social worker, author, and spiritual counselor. His book, From and for God, is an intimate and contemplative collection of writings on the spiritual path. Confidentiality is deeply important in the spiritual direction and supervision space, but what do we need to consider when thinking about how to guard the holy ground of our directee's souls? What imagination might be necessary when we talk about confidentiality with ourselves and with others? What does that process look like, and how might it be engaged in creativity and hope? Join Maria and Tara as they talk with our guest Jeremy Frye about the ins, outs, and practicalities of confidentiality in the spiritual direction and supervision relationship. Jeremy Frye is a spiritual director, retreat leader, and Director of Sacred Community for Anam Cara Ministries. One of his deepest joys is companioning people on their journey toward living into and out of their belovedness. His vocational pilgrimage began with serving for 20 years in full-time pastoral ministry in the local church, which has given him a profound understanding of and compassion for those whose personal spirituality and professional contexts converge (sometimes easily and sometimes causing great distress). He is deeply acquainted with grief and loss as well as the good but difficult work of the disordering and reordering of one's faith. Jeremy has completed a certificate in Soul Care from the Soul Care Institute, through Fuller Seminary, a 2-year apprenticeship in spiritual direction through Anam Cara, and is currently enrolled in the Companioning Center's program for Supervision Training. Jeremy lives with his wife, two children, one dog, six chickens, and whoever else needs a place to rest their head at An Téarmann (Gaelic for the refuge), their little urban homestead in East Nashville, Tennessee. Learn more about https://columbanjpe.org/jubileepodcast According to the World Wildlife Fund, “although they comprise less than 5% of the world population, Indigenous peoples protect 80% of the Earth's biodiversity in the forests, deserts, grasslands, and marine environments in which they have lived for centuries." But despite this, as the Guardian reported in 2020, “many Indigenous communities – especially those in isolated regions – [also] continue to face threats like disease outbreaks, poverty, environmental injustices and human rights violations. Some rural populations may even be facing extinction.”This dynamic is true of the Subanen people, an Indigenous community who live on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. The Columban Fathers and the Columban Sisters have lived in solidarity with many of the indigenous communities of the Philippines for several decades now. And they've been living alongside the Subanen community since 1983. Our relationship with them has taught us that the unjust exploitation of the natural world and of indigenous communities has historically, and to this very day, gone hand-in-hand. If the global community wants to better care for creation, we have to first listen to the wisdom of Indigenous traditions, and center their experience and expertise in the conversation about solutions. In the words of Columban Fr. Vinnie Busch, “the Subanens regard their habitat as a sacred community to be cherished, not as a collection of resources to be exploited. They celebrate the sacred dimension of their habitat in their rituals, stories, music, and dance. [They] and other indigenous peoples can guide our faith communities to live in an enhancing way within the Earth community.”Music from https://purple-planet.com

Quotes: “When somebody is sick, all of the community is sick, but when somebody arrives to another point of view, another reality, or learns something amazing, the community also energetically arrives to this space more quickly.” “In the Andean tradition, when you live in a community, you need to be responsible and be more impeccable with your ideas, with your feelings, because this is going to help you and everyone – all of your Ayllu, all your spiritual family.” Receive a FREE guided meditation for healing and balance with Jhaimy here: www.childrenofthe7rays.com/meditation

Episode Summary What is communal dreaming, and why would you want to participate? In this episode, Amanda Lux explores: Conscious dreaming communities and how they differ from other types of dream-sharing communities Dream re-entry and how you can go back into your own or other peoples dreams for healing, guidance, inspiration, and guidance How dreaming practices of the Iroquois, Australian aboriginals and other Indigenous peoples that have been lost over time offer value and insight relevant to modern-day life Amanda also shares a dream and its hilarious synchronicities that she incubated specifically for this episode that resulted in a powerful dream re-entry. SO often we dismiss the seemingly random short dreams but if we do the work of listening, often we get the message later. Lo and behold this one did contain messages related to communal dreaming and the importance it has for the earth and all beings. Who knew?
