Although these projects are all wildly different in content and genre, each presented their own unique obstacles. Netflix's live action take on the classic manga and animated series, One Piece, has been a massive, world wide success. For season 2, supervising sound editor Paul Col and re-recording mixer Gavin Fernades, were presented with an intimidating amount of audio challenges. A sword fight involving 100 enemies, bad guys that battle by turning into smoke, whales the size of buildings and lots more had to be given sounds built from scratch. Five members of the sound team from Director James Gunn's recent Superman film, join the show to talk about giving a new sonic identity to the Superman legacy. Supervising Sound Editors David Acord & Katy Wood are joined by re-recording mixers Chris Boyes & Tim Blanc as well as production sound mixer Lee Orloff, to do a deep dive into super hero sound. Challenges included capturing the dialog on set while surrounded by complicated visual effects and stunts and the sound design and editorial of creating entirely new sounds for super powers and pocket dimensions. The final mix had to find clarity within huge music, sound effects and important dialog. The new film Nuremberg is a surprisingly dense and complicated film for it's sound. What I assumed was going to be a standard courtroom drama ended up being a much larger film and it sounded fantastic.  The dialog was crisp and up front, the sound design was intense. Dialog/ADR supervisor Ulrika Akander & Re-Recording Mixer/Sound Designer/Supervising Sound Editor Michael Babcock joined me to talk about their unique approach to the audio post on this film. Using what they refer to as a "rolling premix" the film was tackled over a longer period of time with a small crew. Viktor is an impressive documentary that relies on sound to tell it's story. The film's protagonist is a deaf photographer living in Ukraine, documenting the Russian invasion of of his country after he finds out he is not allowed to sign up as a soldier. Using innovative sound design to immerse the audience in Viktor's POV (or more accurately POH, point of hearing), the film focuses on his frustration at being unable to fight in the traditional sense and his passion for photography, as a way to serve his country. This spoiler free conversation with Sound Designer Peter Albrechtsen, Sound Designer/Foley Artist Heikki Kossi and Re-recording Mixer Tim Nielsen, discusses how they manipulated the sound in the film to approximate how Viktor hears and just as importantly, when to employ these techniques. The sound design for Viktor evolved drastically from the start of postproduction to the final mix. They began with hard rules for when and how to twist the audio. Yet for the final version, all those rules were thrown out the door. It is an interesting case study following the journey a soundtrack to find a film's “voice”. The sound team interview is followed up with a one on one talk with Viktor's director Olivier Sarbil. Dick Maitland has worked on the sound for over 4,700 episodes of Sesame Street, starting with the show back in 1969. 50 years into the show's run, Steve "Major" Giammaria joined the show as re-recording mixer, and had to quickly get up to speed on all the iconic sounds found on Sesame Street.
