Hello! In this One Perfect Scene episode, Paul and I tackle the scene in 'The Shining' where Wendy reads her husband's derranged writings (All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy) and builds to their conflict on the stairs. A masterful sequence from Stanely Kubrick that gives us much to chew on.

Book Vs. Movie: Eyes Wide ShutThe 1999 Classic Stanley Kubrick Film Vs. The 1926 Short Story by Arthur Schnitzler Do you know the password? The inside password? The Margos look at the 1999 Stanely Kubrick film Eyes Wide Shut, which was released after the director's death in March and at the SAME time as The Blair Witch Project and is one of the most debated of his works. A sex drama about an impossibly beautiful couple (then married Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman), the film explores the themes of marriage, fidelity, identity, consequences, and …masks? This is either one of the best films of Kubrick's career or the dullest. Let's get ready to discuss! Having bought the rights to the German author Arthur Schnitzler's novella Traumnovelle/Rhapsody: A Dream novel in 1968, Kubrick wanted to create a masterpiece about love, sex, and identity but often felt he was not ready to film the version in his mind. When he met Cruise and Kidman in 1996, he finally met his essential “Bill and Alice Hartford,” two extraordinarily beautiful people who can convey insecurity and lust. (He tried filming with Harvey Keitel and Jennifer Jason Leigh, but they both had to leave production when he took longer than they had time to commit to the project.) The shooting began officially in November 1996 in England as Kubrick (a Bronx native) moved there in the 1970s to avoid flying to any set. It finally wrapped in June 1998, becoming one of (if not THE) longest film production of all time. Kubrick was able to show his final version before his death, and from there, we get controversies about how “final” this version was. The 1925 original story is very close to the filmed adaptation about a couple who attend a masquerade ball and then confess/or deal with urges to confess infidelity. The masks, orgies, and walking around in a stressful state of being are similar to the 1999 film, as is much of the original dialogue. Which did we like better, the 1926 novella and the 1999 film? Included on that list are two films by Stanely Kubrick, one by Woody Allen, and one of the first MCU movies. GamerDude also includes 10 of his most underrated comedies, which span decades. He goes back to 1950 for an underrated Jimmy Stewart classic, to the mid-1980s for a somewhat obscure Eddie Murphy vehicle, and to the mid-1990s for one of Jim Carrey's more under-appreciated roles.

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Charlotte Colbert (@colbertcharlotte) Language, psychoanalysis, socio-political constructions of gender and identity are at the heart of Colbert's practice. Spanning film, photography, ceramics, and sculpture, she questions narrative structures and storytelling, weaving surreal and fantastical mise en scene in a documentarian approach to characters, figures, and people. Fiction becomes a way to approach the truth and the most intimate emotions. Straddling the fine line between fine art and film, Colbert's films have strong philosophical undertones and often play on questions of time, space and identity, often dark and surreal with a hint of comedy.Selected Shows: Mademoiselle, CRAC Centre Regional d Art Contemporain Occitanie, Sete, France (2018); From Selfie to Self Expression, Saatchi Gallery, London, UK (2017), Daydreaming with Stanely Kubrick; Guests V&A Museum of Childhood, London, UK; Istanbul International Art fair; Art Basel; Small is Beautiful, Flowers Gallery; Dancing at the edge of the World, Sara Zanin, Rome; Birth, TJ Boulting. A true masterpiece. These are the only words used to describe this film from Stanely Kubrick as it has remained relevant for so long and still revered to this day. A husband, wife, and son are tasked with becoming the caretakers for the Overlook hotel for the winter. However, what transpires is a true descent into madness as the hotel has other ideas for the family. A film with so many nuances to it as well as incredible music choices and cinematography that it has to be somewhere in everyone's top movie choices. Even if you haven't seen this film before you definitely know it from the pop culture references, but just know, you've always been here.

Book Vs Movie  2001: A Space Odyssey The Acclaimed Work by Arthur C. Clarke & Stanley Kubrick Examined (and Demystified?) by the Margos The Margos attempt to decipher one of the most lauded (and examined) films of the 20th century--2001: A Space Odyssey that is the combined effort of two geniuses--Arthur C. Clarke and Stanely Kubrick. The film released in 1968 and the 1951 short story (titled The Sentinel) have been a subject of thousands of thesis papers and movie nerd YouTube tutorials, but what does it all mean?  Sentinel of Eternity (as it was first known) was written by Clarke in 1948 for a BBC competition--which he lost. It’s about the discovery of an artifact on the Earth’s moon left by aliens and transmitting signals into deep space. This “sentinel’ was a “warning beacon’ on the possibility of intelligent life outside our solar system. In 1964, Stanely Kubrick contacted Clarke (a now revered science fiction writer) to ask him if he wanted to collaborate on a film screenplay. Kubrick started his career as a photographer and was now considered an edgy filmmaker with recent hits Lolita and Dr. Strangelove. Clarke later said he was intrigued by the “enfant terrible” and could not understand why he described him as a recluse. (By this point, Clarke was living full time in Sri Lanka where he would stay until his death on March 19, 2008.) In simple terms, the film is about two mission pilots who are sent to Jupiter to retrieve a device with extravehicular activity (EVA). Their computer is the HAL 9000 and it has a mind of its own.  There is so much to discuss here mainly with the movie and not the short story as much. (Clarke would totally agree with that!)  In this ep the Margos discuss: The life story of Arthur C. Clarke & Stanley Kubrick The special effects used in 2001 The strange history of its initial run and long-lasting popularity The cast which includes: Keir Dullea (Dr. Dave Bowman), Gary Lockwood (Dr. Frank Poole,) William Sylvester (Dr. Heywood R. Floyd,) Daniel Richter (Moon-Watcher,) Leonard Rossiter (Dr. Andrei Smylov,) Margaret Tzack (Elena,) Robert Beatty (Dr. Ralph Halvorsen,) Sean Sullivan (Dr. Bill Michaels,) and Douglas Rain (Hal 9000 voice.)  Clips Featured: 2001  trailer Hal goes rogue Hal “dies”   Outro music: “Blue Danube” by Johan Strauss (2001 Soundtrack) Join our Patreon page to help support the show! https://www.patreon.com/bookversusmovie  Book Vs.
