Roqayah is off this week, so Kumars is joined from the top of the hour by two friends of the show, Sam Sacks and Sam Knight, journalists and founders of the District Sentinel News Co-op. Together they host the daily District Sentinel Radio podcast as well as Means Morning News, their new weekly collaboration with Means TV. The Sams talk about the challenges of getting a TV news show off the ground amid the pandemic and how they see the DC Sentinel’s role in the budding left mediascape. The gang then discusses the mercenary raid on Venezuela, Bill Gates’s sinister designs for New York, how both parties workers are being sacrificed to the stock market, and why media narratives about left- and right-wing populism are anything but anti-establishment. You can follow Sam Sacks on Twitter @SamSacks and the official District Sentinel account @TheDCSentinel. To watch their tomfoolery every week, subscribe to Means TV, but Means Morning News is now also available to nonmembers, in audio-only form, wherever pods are cast. The founders of Means TV, Naomi Burton and Nick Hayes were our guests on today's show. Several years ago they realised that the skills they had garnered creating advertising content for their corporate clients could easily be turned to support political causes that they believed in. Having created the first viral campaign video for Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, they worked with numerous progressive Democrats in the 2018 mid-terms in America and went on to create the first worker owned streaming service. This week Roqayah and Kumars are joined by Detroit-based filmmakers Naomi Burton and Nick Hayes, cofounders of Means Media and co-creators of the new digital streaming service Means TV, a workers’ cooperative and a left-wing alternative to soul-crushing corporate behemoths like Netflix. Naomi and Nick share how they came to left politics and made a name for themselves producing the defining campaign videos for AOC and other insurgent congressional candidates in the run-up to the 2018 midterm election. They explain why the business magazine Fast Company named them one of the world’s most innovative companies, and give listeners a rundown of their diverse slate of content, including feature films, documentaries, animation and gaming content. The gang discusses their shared love for Street Fight Radio and the value of building our own independent cultural institutions in the face of increasing attempts by establishment media to co-opt the creative energy of the rising American left. I was thrilled to be joined by Naomi Burton, Co-Founder of Means TV (@means_tv), the first Anti-Capitalist Media Platform in the United States. Naomi and Co-Founder Nick Hayes, rose to prominence through producing videos for Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and several other campaigns. After these big breaks they could have done anything, but (to my great admiration) they chose perhaps the most risky and unprecedented path: trying to build a worker-owned media platform that gives voice to those traditionally excluded from the entertainment industry, and to produce content that explains the structural forces (Racism, Capitalism, Patriarchy, Sexism) that generates these exclusions. It's a strange conversation in that I'm not sure Fame or Celebrity (which themselves are based on inequality) can ever be progressive or leftist. I discuss this with Naomi, my own difficulty in building solidarity with fellow leftists in Media, and thoughts on how we can do things better. It's a fascinating conversation with a brilliant woman, and I can't wait to hear what you think! For more on Means TV check them out on Twitter or their webpage. UNLOCKED: I wanted to add an ironic prison ghost tour to my central Missouri roadtrip in July but the tours were canceled due to extensive structural damage from a tornado and flooding. Hell yeah! This prison held Emma Goldman and Kate O'Hare for their anti-war actions in speaking against the WW1 draft. Instead of the tour, I walked along an abandoned service road and talked about the right wing Christian concept of ghosts, the death penalty, and libidinal orgone energies. Plus, I pitch a Means TV paranormal prison abolitionist show. Joe Bernstein of Buzzfeed News was kind enough to come on and talk with us about his incredible Article, detailing Andy Ngo's assault by Antifa participants in Portland, and how the violence inflicted upon him, was the fuel the Right Wing needed to turn him into a Media star. We discuss how the Left can do a better job in Media Strategy, a strategy that so far as seen far right figures like Andy Ngo and PraegerU far outstrip anything the Left has put out in terms of popularity (though we have high hopes for Means TV!) Violence is one of the most important concepts the Left needs to interrogate. It will be done to us when we oppose the State. It will be used against us as evidence of our moral failure when we stray from non-violent resistance. We receive no justice when we are harmed, and are prosecuted when we use violence to ask for justice. Andy Ngo embodies all these contradictions. I think everyone in the left or liberal political position will learn quite a bit from this conversation. For the article that spurred this interview (and Joe has several wonderful pieces on Right Wing Media) Please check out On Andy Ngo: https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/josephbernstein/andy-ngo-portland-antifa On PraegerU: https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/josephbernstein/prager-university For more fascinating podcasts with figures from around the world, be sure to Like, Share or Subscribe to The Arts of Travel Podcast!

This week, Roqayah and Kumars are joined by Donald Borenstein, a writer, journalist, and filmmaker who's been covering the Stop & Shop supermarket strike for the worker-owned streaming platform Means TV. Donald, who made the 500 mile journey across New England in order to document the 11-day strike, describes what lead approximately 31,000 workers, represented by United Food and Commercial Workers, to picket Stop & Shop locations in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Donald explains the tactics workers utilized to pressure management into conceding and to prevent anyone from crossing picket lines. Donald goes on to describes the impact of appearances by Democratic presidential candidates at picket lines—including Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren—who spoke in support of striking workers. We try to separate the tepid lip service from some candidates from what might be better faith outreach of others. The crew also examines what the success of the Stop & Shop strike means for private sector unions, specifically in the grocery sector. You can follow Donald on Twitter @Boringstein, and keep up with their Stop & Shop strike coverage on Means TV.
