The Killing (1956) directed by Stanley Kubrick. Stanley Kubrick's account of an ambitious racetrack robbery is one of Hollywood's tautest, twistiest noirs. Aided by a radically time-shuffling narrative, razor-sharp dialogue from pulp novelist Jim Thompson, and a phenomenal cast of character actors, including Sterling Hayden, Coleen Gray, Timothy Carey, Elisha Cook Jr., and Marie Windsor, The Killing is both a jaunty thriller and a cold-blooded punch to the gut. And with its precise tracking shots and gratifying sense of irony, it's Kubrick to the core. This is The Recommendation Game, a bi-weekly podcast where two film lovers take turns to recommend a film the other has not seen, they watch and then skype to discuss it. Spoilers are a given. Perhaps the most humanistic of Kubrick's films, PATHS OF GLORY is a blistering study of injustice, middle-management, and anti-war sentiment. We're down in the trenches this week with Sarah Marshall (“You're Wrong About” and “You Are Good”), and we're asking the big questions. Like - what crazy scheme did Timothy Carey pull during production that caused him to be fired as soon as all his closeups were filmed? Did Kirk Douglas take his hefty salary (a third of the total budget!) to pay for tennis lessons for son Michael? Why do American schools gloss over World War I? How does Ben weigh his love of ditches against the concept of trench warfare? If Stanley Kubrick's previous two films were exercises in learning on the job, THE KILLING is where we start to see him put that knowledge into action. A thrilling noir, it allowed Kubrick to connect his passion for chess to a story about the best laid plans of a too ambitious crook. We couldn't be more thrilled to welcome dream guest Patton Oswalt as we swap insane Timothy Carey stories, debate whether or not Rodney Dangerfield appears in the background of a scene, and suggest that Sterling Hayden's Johnny Clay should have added a “Karen” to his plan to solve his baggage check-in situation at the airport. Hello my friends, and welcome to a very specially-extended episode of Divulgence, I am your host, your friend, Jordan Vezeau. I am so excited to welcome back the fringe of the fringe, author, researcher, and former Hong Kong movie star, Troy D. MacLachlan! If he melted your mind last time he was here, we will be melting your face and jaw with this one! We talk, with some great details, about numerous topics surrounding Stanley Kubrick and his movies (especially ‘The Shining', ‘Lolita', and ‘Eyes Wide Shut'), including: Kubrick and music (and my new love for classical), Kubrick and alchemy, Scientology and Tom Cruise/Nicole Kidman/Vivian Kubrick, Doctor Sleep connections, Rita Hayworth's troubled past, dirty Kirk Douglas, the rape and murder/disappearance of Natalie Wood, Ryan O'Neal, and (other) greasy dirt bag evils that Kubrick has had to work with, and I share my very first Kubrick experience. We also get deep into my/our enjoyment of decoding his masterpieces, and the importance of inventorying and analyzing all the clues and archives of materials possible that we have been left with to use to decode and understand his works - We also go over the decoding of Kubrick's movies, and the many themes, both controversial and mind-opening, such as deep-state elites, technology and transhumanism, child abuse and sexual abuse, corruption in Hollywood, politics, and within the royal families/systems, mind-control/MK-Ultra/manipulation, and, plain and simple, death. We also discuss the importance of knowing your friends/teammates and sticking together in this battle of the futures, this was to awaken, and this struggle to understand and come together both as one combined and separately, together collected. Troy shares stories of his history working as an actor in Hong Kong, and we cover so much more great stuff, including gatekeepers, David McGowan, Charlie Manson, organized serial killers, the esoteric and the occult, Timothy Carey, Sydney Greenstreet, and other scene stealers, and much, much, much more in this extra-long episode of Divulgence! It is a wonderful mixture of movies, culture, warfare, and other esoteric and occultic topics that make for a wonderful discussion to be a part of, enjoy! ** ALL support is much appreciated, in any shape or form. Baz Luhrmann's ELVIS is upon us, so it is now time for OMFYS' ELVIS EPISODE! First, Elvis Presley himself is a karate-chopping, motorcycle-riding, rock and roll rebel with a big chip on his shoulder who falls in with a traveling carnival in ROUSTABOUT (1964). Only Elvis' singing can keep the carnival from being gobbled up by a sideshow conglomerate, so it's up to carny queen Barbara Stanwyck (!) to convince him to stop being a dick long enough to save the show in what is (kinda sorta) the Elvis movie version of Nightmare Alley. Also starring Joan Freeman and the age appropriate love interest and Leif Erickson as the drunken carnival foreman who runs Elvis off the road in a fit of rage + Richard Kiel as the strong man, Teri Garr shaking her tail as a cooch tent dancer and Billy Barty as the butt of Elvis' cancellable jokes. Raquel Welch is also in here somewhere. Produced by Hal Wallis (Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, True Grit) if you can believe that! Roustabout is currently streaming for free with ads on Pluto. And next, we go for a bit of ELVIS PANIC with THE WORLD'S GREATEST SINNER (1962), the zero-budget passion project from Timothy Carey, the unhinged character actor who once drove Marlon Brando to stab him with a pencil. Best known for small but utterly engrossing performances in Kubrick's The Killing (1956) and Paths of Glory (1957), Carey poured everything he had (including the labor of several family members) into this tale of Clarence Hilliard, a bored insurance salesman who transforms himself into a dangerous cult leader and proclaims himself a god through very Elvis-like rock and roll performances. Featuring Paul Frees (Mars and Beyond/Episode 3) as the voice of the Devil himself and music by a very young Frank Zappa. Now streaming on Prime for an extra 99¢ rental. All this plus Robert Lopez AKA EL VEZ stops by to discuss the upcoming mega Elvis biopic, Elvis Presley's own movie career and the continuing impact of the King of Rock and Roll on pop culture. Hosts: Bob Calhoun, Cory Sklar, and the father-daughter duo of Greg Franklin & Philena Franklin Weed is available at your local dispensary in participating states.

All independent filmmakers and cult-flick fans must bow down to the low-rent majesty that is Timothy Agoglia Carey's "The World's Greatest Sinner." Shot over the course of three years in the downmarket sections of L.A., the movie tracks the journey of Clarence Hilliard (Carey), an insurance salesman who bugs out and starts his own political-spiritual movement. Clarence promises his followers that they can become God, or "superhuman beings," and soon takes to calling himself God Hilliard. He riles up the youth by spreading his message via spasmodic rockabilly (which made Lux Interior of the Cramps a fan of the film for life), flailing on his guitar and then yowling "Please, please, please, please...TAKE...MY...HAND!" as the crowd goes nuts. Maynard James Keenan, eat your heart out. This beautifully overwrought and seamy DIY masterpiece (John Cassavetes famously said it packed "the brilliance of Eisenstein") is, first and foremost, a glowing calling card for one of cinema's true sui generis animals. Carey may be familiar to Stanley Kubrick fans for his indelible turns in The Killing and Paths of Glory; he was a notorious scene-stealer and general wild man who inspired awe and revulsion in his directors and co-stars in roughly equal measure. In The World's Greatest Sinner he is front and center, the man, the force, dominating every frame and soaking the very celluloid with his passion and hipster strangeness. Laughing, weeping, bellowing, preaching, murmuring seductively to retired women and 14-year-old girls no matter what Carey does, he does it to the max. I've long suspected that Nicolas Cage took a long look at Carey's work before embarking on his own oddball career. Cosmetically, TWGS is a rise-and-fall piece about a man's hubris; at one point God Hilliard even sticks a pin in a host he nabbed from a church, leading to a great Carey rant: "BREAD! IT'S JUST BREAD! MOTHER! YOUR PRAYERS WERE FOR NOTHING!" What saves this from being a Jack T. Chick tract on film, though, is Carey's sardonic and defiantly off-kilter cascade of ideas and genuine command of mood and tone, despite the movie's lurching from goofball comedy to despairing tragedy. The scenes of God Hilliard conferring with his trusted assistants (one of whom is Satan) in shadowy rooms scoop The Godfather by a neat decade. Though the movie has been both reviled and lionized for its oddness, it's pretty mainstream compared to some of Carey's unrealized projects, like Tweet's Ladies of Pasadena, his intended follow-up to TWGS. The movie uses standard shots and narrative beats, but sneaks its anarchy in through a side door. Scored by a young Frank Zappa (who later churlishly called Carey's labor of love "the world's worst movie") and partially shot by future cult director Ray Dennis Steckler, TWGS may well be the epitome of psychotronic filmmaking. Since Carey died in 1994, his son Romeo has curated his memory and work, and the movie is available directly from Romeo's website (http://www.romeocarey.com) catch an incomparable actor in full effect (he wrote, directed, produced, and distributed the thing himself). I used to think that Charles Laughton's "Night of the Hunter" was the greatest example of an actor-turned-director who only directed one film. But Timothy Carey sure gives Laughten a run for his money.  https://www.amazon.com/Worlds-Greatest-Sinner-Timothy-Carey/dp/B009FIMWWM --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/romeo-carey/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/romeo-carey/support

We also delve into the mad life of character actor Timothy Carey. Finally, we talk about John Boorman's 1967 American crime movie, Point Blank, and ponder over whether the events depicted in the film actually take place, or if they are a figment of the protagonist's imagination. Mad Dog Time aka Trigger Happy is the ultimate The World Is Wrong film and if all we ever did was produce this episode our service to cinema would be commendable. This is the most underrated, star-studded Jewish gangster film directed in the style of Dean Martin ever produced and this episode features an interview with the writer/director himself, LARRY BISHOP!!! Starring Jeff Golblum, Richard Dreyfuss, Ellen Barkin, Gabriel Byrne, Gregory Hines, Kyle MacLachlan, Diane Lane, Henry Silva, Michael J. Pollard, Angie Everhart, Burt Reynolds, Paul Anka, Billy Idol, Rob Reiner, Richard Pryor, Christopher Jones and Larry Bishop. From Andras: This is the film that inspired me to want to do a podcast like this. I discovered it on a VHS tape (under the title "Trigger Happy") in the late 90’s and, since then I have been more than mildly obsessed with it. Bryan is the only other person I’ve met (so far) who shares this obsession with me and we’re hoping we can inspire you to join us in our love for this film and the transcendent performances that populate it. For this episode I had the great honor of interviewing the film’s writer/director Larry Bishop. It goes long. Two and a half hours but, boy, is it worth it. In the course of sharing his insights into the writing, casting and production of the film, Bishop shares stories about Dean Martin, Kierkegaard, Marlon Brando, Albert Brooks, Timothy Carey, Mickey Rourke, Sean Penn, Schoepnehauer, Natalie Wood, Quentin Tarantino and his high school pal Richard Dreyfuss. Timothy Carey’s Method Of Levels teaches a form of psychotherapy based on perceptual control theory. The Crackpot List is specific to physics. But if someone were to create one for psychiatry, Method of Levels would score a perfect 100%. It somehow manages to do okay on the physics one despite not discussing any physics. The Method of Levels is the correct solution to every psychological problem, from mild depression to psychosis. Therapists may be tempted to use something other than the Method of Levels, but they must overcome this temptation and just use the Method of Levels on everybody. Every other therapy is about dismissing patients as “just crazy”, but the Method of Levels tries to truly understand the patient. Every other therapy is about the therapist trying to change the patient, but the Method of Levels is about the patient trying to change themselves. The author occasionally just lapses into straight-up daydreams about elderly psychologists sitting on the porch, beating themselves up that they were once so stupid as to believe in psychology other than the Method of Levels. This book isn’t just bad, it’s dangerous. One vignette discusses a patient whose symptoms clearly indicate the start of a manic episode. The author recommends that instead of stigmatizing this person with a diagnosis of bipolar or pumping them full of toxic drugs, you should use the Method of Levels on them. This is a good way to end up with a dead patient. I like perceptual control theory. I share the author’s hope that it could one day be a theory of everything for the brain. But even if it is, you can’t use theories of everything to do clinical medicine. Darwin discovered a theory of everything for biology, but you can’t reason from evolutionary first principles to how to treat a bacterial infection. You should treat the bacterial infection with antibiotics. This will be in accordance with evolutionary principles, and there will even be some cool evolutionary tie-ins (fungi evolved penicillin as a defense against bacteria). But you didn’t discover penicillin by reasoning from evolutionary first principles. If you tried reasoning from evolutionary first principles, you might end up trying to make the bacteria mutate into a less dangerous strain during the middle of an osteomyelitis case or something. Just use actually existing clinical medicine and figure out the evolutionary justification for it later.
