Inhalt00:00:00 Freitag, 4. I denne jubilæums-udgave markerer "Elsker The Beatles" de 100 første episoder. A Hard Day´s Night"-agtigt raid. Melissa Benn comes from a long line of outspoken campaigners and prominent Parliamentarians. She was educated at Holland Park comprehensive and the London School of Economics where she graduated with a First in History, the first woman in a generation to do so. Melissa's journalism has appeared in a wide range of publications, including the Independent, the Times, Public Finance, Marxism Today, London Review of Books, Cosmopolitan and the Financial Times. She is a regular contributor to the Guardian, the New Statesman, and Teach Secondary magazine, where she writes a regular column. Melissa has published nine books, including two novels. In her writing on education, Melissa has consistently tried to tackle contemporary myths about state education and to set out the case for a more equal system. With Fiona Millar she co-authored 'A Comprehensive Future: Quality and Equality For All Our Children', an influential pamphlet that challenged the drift towards the marketisation of state education within the then New Labour government and made the case for strong, non-selective, community schools. This was followed by School Wars: The Battle for Britain's Education, described by the Observer as ‘a tremendous book.In it, Melissa sketched the history of, and struggles around, secondary education from the post-war period onward and offered a critique of the education policies of successive governments, in particular the Coalition government of 2010-2015. With Janet Downs, she co-authored, 'The Truth About Our Schools: Exposing the Myths, Exploring the Evidence', which tackled some increasingly prevalent and pernicious myths about state education. Caroline Lucas MP described it as a ‘hugely important book that should be required reading for every Education Secretary.' In Life Lessons, Melissa set out the Case for a National Education Service, and this book was described by Guardian Education columnist Fiona Millar as ‘an eloquent and much needed blueprint for reform when radical ideas are in short supply.' I find Melissa's writing to be a uniquely refreshing contribution to the education debate. I recommend catching up on Melissa's many excellent columns in the publications listed earlier. And her book School Wars, which remains incredibly relevant, 12 years after publication, and I recommend it to anyone who wants to understand why we have the weird, patchwork education system that we have. Today on Monday Mile we head to Holland Park for a stroll with a lady who has been a pioneer in the Pitlane, becoming the first woman to take on the main anchor role in F1 on British TV - it is Lee McKenzie! She's worked across some of the most prestigious events in sport, Olympics , Paralympics , Wimbledon and the Rugby World Cup . She's the consummate professional, one of the greats and delivers when it really counts even under pressure and streaming live into our living rooms.  We have a great conversation about what makes a good broadcaster.  We discuss whether journalism really deserves the paraphrase "dirty word" and as to whether broadcasters are out there to “nail someone to the masts”.  We also chat about how F1 is considered to be an elite profession, and how the athlete's attitudes towards the sport has influenced Lee's professionalism towards her job as a broadcaster - "success and failure is measured by a thousandth of a second" . We discuss her relationship with the outdoors and the balance it brings, and how she juggles life on the road, broadcasting across multisport events and adapting to different time zones and prepping for one event whilst she's still mid-broadcast at another. We also talk about the importance of being “good” at the job, and not focusing on what other people might think, and whether it's true if you put everything into something it leaves no room for criticism. However, Lee does open up about trolling and the effects that can have on her relationship with body image. It's a great listen, and as someone who is a role model to me, I really enjoyed this walk and talk with Lee. Aimee will be probing for answers from the full spectrum of routines; the early birds who have finely tuned Monday mornings, to the late risers who struggle to get up before 11am. How do elite athletes find the motivation to kick start their week come rain or shine? How do celebrities deliver no matter what the time of day? What knowledge can they pass on? Each episode drops on a Monday morning as a bitesize piece of content and weekly dose of motivation - right when you need it. Aimee will meet each of her guests for a walk and a chat and over the course of the mile she will find out how they cope on a Monday morning - their idiosyncrasies, breakfast routines, alarm noises - and how, when they need to, find the motivation to kick-on through the week. Sharing some of Britain's greatest athletes, entrepreneurs, doctors, authors and broadcasters ' secrets on self-motivation, candid thoughts on what they struggle with and a sideways look at some of their more unusual morning habits. Head over to IG to watch the visuals of our episode and what we get up to on our Monday Mile. https://www.instagram.com/aimee_fuller/ Filmed by Jon Moy

This week we're talking about two of London's most magnificent Victorian houses, Leighton House and Sambourne House in Holland Park. Leighton House, studio-home of the eminent Victorian artist Frederic Lord Leighton, has just reopened after an £8 million redevelopment along with nearby Sambourne House, the family home of Punch cartoonist Edward Linley Sambourne. We talk to Daniel Robbins, Senior Curator of both houses and to the Iranian artist Shahrzad Gaffari, who's hand-painted an 11-foot high textured mural around the curved wall of Leighton House's brand new helical staircase. Shahrzad tells us that her mural is inspired by the 13th Century poet Rumi and, with its bright turquoise motifs which echo the tiles in the Arab Hall, the work represents the present and future of the house, continuing to deepen our knowledge of and understanding of eastern culture. A new exhibition space in Leighton House is now showcasing the work of the Holland Park Circle of artists, to which Lord Leighton belonged, while the new basement has a display of Leighton's exquisite drawings – there are 700 belonging to the house. You can see Leighton's studio exactly as it would have been, as well as the Arab Hall and the other public areas, full of mosaics, tiles, pottery and artefacts which he brought back from his travels in Egypt, Turkey and Syria. Walking into Sambourne House is to be fully immersed in a Victorian family home while Leighton House is now a lively destination and gathering point with a new café overlooking the garden. Both are well worth a visit so listen in to hear about what's in store at both of these great historic homes.

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Konstantin Benkovich (@benkovich) Artworks of Benkovich are in the permanent museum collections and in many private collections around the globe. Together with Pussy Riot and a number of other well-known Russian artists, he participated in the group exhibition “Russian Post-Soviet Actionism” at the Saatchi Art Gallery in London in 2017, various public projects worldwide, exhibitions in the Multimedia Art Museum in Moscow (2021) and the exhibition “Millennials in Contemporary Russian Art” running today in the Russian State Museum in Saint-Petersburg.His works deal with freedom and unfreedom through the symbols and materiality of his sculptures. The reconsidered, reinvented symbols turn into new – critical, political, desacralized ones. The most dominant material in his works are steel bars which he cuts and welds into grids. The rebar and steel in Russia is the synonym of unfreedom. The rebar is an absolute symbol of aggression. Spanning film, photography, ceramics, and sculpture, she questions narrative structures and storytelling, weaving surreal and fantastical mise en scene in a documentarian approach to characters, figures, and people. Fiction becomes a way to approach the truth and the most intimate emotions. Straddling the fine line between fine art and film, Colbert's films have strong philosophical undertones and often play on questions of time, space and identity, often dark and surreal with a hint of comedy.Selected Shows: Mademoiselle, CRAC Centre Regional d Art Contemporain Occitanie, Sete, France (2018); From Selfie to Self Expression, Saatchi Gallery, London, UK (2017), Daydreaming with Stanely Kubrick; Guests V&A Museum of Childhood, London, UK; Istanbul International Art fair; Art Basel; Small is Beautiful, Flowers Gallery; Dancing at the edge of the World, Sara Zanin, Rome; Birth, TJ Boulting. Imagine the architect of your new house insisting that you build it in a style that was fashionable six hundred years ago. That's precisely what was happening in nineteenth-century Britain in what was called the Battle of the Styles. It's hard to imagine that anyone who walked past Tower House in London's Holland Park ever thought it was entirely normal, even in the 1870s when it was built. It's the work of William Burges, an architect whose output was small but significant, and it represents a high point in the Gothic Revival.

We hear how she set out to find herself, how she made Dennis Hopper cry and how she fixed Raquel Welch's hot pants.   Diana reads palms at Wilde Ones in the Kings Road https://wildeones.com/tarot-readings/   Thanks to Paul Gorman http://www.paulgormanis.com   ---------- Get the Bureau's Newsletter   Support our wild endeavours   The Bureau of Lost Culture Home   Go on - follow, rate and review us - or be in touch directly bureauoflostculture@gmail.com We'd love to hear from you. -------------

In today's episode, I head to Holland Park in West London to meet a good friend of mine, Laura Crane - former British Surfing champion and now owner of Stryve Wellness retreats.  We discuss the importance of being present,  how essential it is to take time away from the screen, and "living life to the max!" Laura has had quite the journey from appearing in the Love Island Villa in 2018 and in more recent times, her change in relationship with both food and exercise. We also have a very open and honest conversation around the pressures associated with social media and how she has managed to find a balance. It's a great episode and just a really genuine conversation between two friends. Each episode drops on a Monday morning and plays out in real time. Aimee will meet each of her guests for a walk and a chat and over the course of the mile she will find out how they cope on a Monday morning - their idiosyncrasies, breakfast routines, alarm noises - and how, when they need to, find the motivation to kick-on through the week.  Dropping every Monday as a bitesize piece of content and weekly dose of motivation - right when you need it - sharing some of Britain's greatest athletes' secrets on self-motivation, candid thoughts on what they struggle with and a sideways look at some of their more unusual morning habits.  Head over to IG to watch the visuals of our episode and what we get up to on our Monday Mile. https://www.instagram.com/aimee_fuller/   Filmed and Edited by Jack Holmes.

The fourth and last guest at our sun-roasted live event in Holland Park on July 17 was the ever-supercharged Danny Baker. Straw-hatted, drink-toting and delighted audience members were treated to a series of superb comic monologues which featured his idea for a Beatles movie, the South London promoter who locked himself in a portakabin to evade the wrath of his acts and a magnificent riff about how the music-hall legend Bud Flanagan conned his way onto an ocean liner (aged 14) and joined a travelling show in America. @prodnose Tour dates with Bob Harris …https://www.ents24.com/uk/tour-dates/danny-baker Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. We had our first live event for 18 months on a fabulous, sun-baked afternoon in Holland Park on July 17 and the writer and former Fleet Street columnist Lesley-Ann Jones was one of the four guests (there'll be a podcast of each of them). These are her crowd-pleasing, colourful memories of Queen backstage at Live Aid, living with Raquel Welch and tea with Bowie at Haddon Hall. The Stones are in there too. @LAJwriter LAJ's books …https://www.amazon.co.uk/Books-Lesley-Ann-Jones/s?rh=n%3A266239%2Cp_27%3ALesley-Ann+Jones Podcast …https://podcasts.apple.com/sn/podcast/11-porkys-pals-lesley-ann-jones/id1463527178?i=1000442129335Support Word In Your Ear on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast.
