Lucinda is joined by Stella Collins, co-founder and chief learning officer of Stella Labs. They discuss the intersection of neuroscience and AI in the field of learning and development. Stella shares insights on how understanding how the brain learns can improve the effectiveness of learning initiatives. She emphasises the importance of motivation, practice, reflection, and spaced repetition in the learning process. Stella also highlights the role of AI in creating personalised learning journeys, providing support and feedback, and tracking progress KEY TAKEAWAYS Understanding how learning works is crucial for both learners and learning professionals. It involves recognsing the need for learning, staying motivated throughout the learning process, receiving guidance and support, practicing and experimenting with new knowledge or skills, and applying them in real-world situations. Neuroscience provides insights into how the brain learns and changes. It highlights the neuroplasticity of the brain, its energy requirements, and the importance of sleep in consolidating learning. AI can enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of learning. It can help create content, suggest behaviours, personalise learning journeys, provide automated feedback and support, track progress, and generate relevant activities for learners. Gamification can be a useful tool in learning, but it should be optional and tailored to individual preferences. It can enhance motivation and engagement, but it is not necessary for effective learning. BEST MOMENTS "AI can help you be highly efficient at producing rubbish. So you do need to think about what's the effectiveness we're looking at, what are we actually trying to achieve?" "If you're a line manager who perhaps hasn't had a coaching skill or hasn't been trained on coaching, if you're given a checklist, all those stuff, here's some good questions to ask." "Learning just isn't magic. You can't onboard people faster than their brains can actually process stuff." "Good learning doesn't need gamification. Good gamification can sometimes help with learning." Friction is often thought of negatively, however, let's ponder how friction may indeed be an essential element we all need in order to perform at our peak. In this podcast we discuss our feelings, emotions and how we physically respond to different situations. Whether aware of it, or not, our brain is constantly stimulated and reacting to the environment we are in; be it a busy office, full of noise and energy, or conversely a remote location, a place for focus in our isolated setting. Isn't it interesting how both can be equally full of distraction - which is also often a source of friction. No matter our chosen or prescribed workplace, ultimately how we think and feel impacts how we perform in all aspects of life. Join us in our latest episode where we explore how people function and what we can do to influence our performance, as we dive in to explore how neuroscience, our bodies and our behaviours play a key role in all of our personal development. In sales, we want to create a culture of professional success that impacts the bottom line and makes our trainees succeed. However, seeing what happens after we train others is always challenging. Stella introduces the latest research and concepts in her conversation. This equips L&D and training professionals with an understanding of the mind's inner workings. Stella's book offers practical tools and ideas that can be used in various contexts, including digital learning and in-person training sessions, coaching conversations, lectures and presentations. It covers topics including creating effective learning environments, promoting motivation, and making learning 'stickier' using stories. In this episode, I chat with author and learning & development expert, Stella Collins, to discover how our brains learn best. The Learning Organisation expert, Peter Senge, once wrote: Taking in information is only distantly related to real learning. It would be nonsensical to say, "I just read a great book about bicycle riding—I've now learned that.”In order to design and deliver effective learning and development initiatives, it's essential to understand how our brains process and retain information. During our conversation, Stella provides insights into how our brains learn best and tips on how to improve our ability to retain and apply our learning.Whether you work in HR, as a Trainer/Coach/Consultant or you're a Leader in an organisation what Stella has to say is relevant, timely and important. In the face of the global pandemic, learning professionals have had to adjust swiftly to sweeping changes to how people work and connect and critically rethink learning delivery. However, a high level of uncertainty remains about what the future holds, with just 18% of organisations expecting learning strategy, investment, and resourcing to return to pre-pandemic levels. Join Nigel Cassidy and this month's guests, David Hayden, Digital Learning Portfolio Manager at the CIPD and Stella Collins, Co-Founder and Chief Learning officer at Stellar Labs, as we explore how learning practice adapted to overcome pandemic-induced challenges and to seize the opportunity for rethinking learning, to better fulfil the requirements of changing organisations. -------- Stella Collins MSc FITOL is co-founder and Chief Learning Officer at Stellar Labs, one of the Brain Ladies and the author of ‘Neuroscience for Learning and Development'. Cognitive load theory tells us that we have to do our best to make things easier for learners. But Bjork says that 'necessary' (or 'desirable') difficulties are an essential part of the process. Should learning be easy or difficult? Is there a simple way to resolve this apparent contradiction – or is it a matter of trade-offs? John talks to Stella Collins, one of the 'Brain Ladies' and also Co-founder and Chief Learning Officer of Stellar Labs, based in Belgium. With degrees in Psychology and Human Communication, she is an enthusiast for our growing knowledge of how the brain works. Starting with the issue of difficulty, the discussion ranges widely over the applicability (and otherwise) of brain science to how we can best support learners. 02:38 - Can psychology help us make things easier for learners? 09:25 - ‘Desirable difficulties' 13:03 - How do you balance desirable difficulties and UX? 17:26 - What drew her to a career in learning? 24:47 - How useful is neuroscience for learning? 32:45 - How applicable are insights from science to practical situations? 36:33 - Sleep and learning Contact Stella Twitter: @stellacollins LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/stellacollins Website: stellarlabs.eu (Company Website) Contact John Helmer Twitter: @johnhelmer LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnhelmer/ Website: http://johnhelmerconsulting.com/ Download the new white paper from Learning Pool written by John Helmer & Ben Betts – 'Data & learning: A new common-sense approach' https://learningpool.com/data-learning-a-new-common-sense-approach/
Building Memory with Science and Senses - Put on Your Thinking Cap (EP:19) With Stella Collins, MSc. Creating effective learning can be complicated – from our biology to our environment, there are a lot of elements that influence outcomes. And how can we get our learners curious anyway, especially in our increasingly digital spaces? Grab a hat and put it on (we mean it…. we'll wait while you go get it) because in this episode, celebrated author and science-based learning thinker, Stella Collins, joins Stacy Craft to explore learning and the brain, memory, the powers of sensory experiences, avoiding stagnation, community, and why there is a group of people who think “Brains!” when they bite into a bar of chocolate.
