In the final episode of season 26, we are sharing a poignant discussion with Ruth and  TC team member, Tina Harris. Tina shares her experience of tarrying as a communal and immersive practice deeply rooted in music, openness, and collective healing. Ruth and Tina explore various themes, including the confrontation of disappointment, doubt, disillusionment, and deconstruction within the tarrying process, and the transformative power of redemptive suffering. They also touch on the importance of lament in spiritual practice and the significance of embracing vulnerability, especially during Holy Week. At the end of this episode we encourage you to reflect deeply and engage fully in the practice of tarrying, to sit with your suffering in the presence of Jesus. We are journeying through Lent with a podcast season entitled “Tarry with Me Awhile: Learnings from the Black Church.” We will use Dr. Selina Stone's book, Tarry Awhile: Wisdom from Black Spirituality for People of Faith, as a guide. Black spirituality has much to offer us in understanding the practice of tarrying as a Lenten practice. Together we will seek a deeper understanding of waiting on God in the liminal space—where the resurrection feels far off, and our deaths and suffering are present.    Tina Harris (TC15) is ordained in the United Methodist Church and holds a Master of Divinity from St. Paul School of Theology. She has served the church in a variety of roles, including Lead Pastor of Grand Avenue Temple UMC and Director of Mission, Service and Justice Ministries in the Missouri Conference of the United Methodist Church. Tina is passionate about community engagement and has served and/or actively supported several civic organizations and ministries. As an attorney and diversity leader, a common thread in her work is to gather individuals into communities, challenge comfort zones and invite those whom society has overlooked to take their place at the table.   Music this season is provided by Julian Davis Reed. Julian Davis Reid (TC20) is an artist-theologian from Chicago who uses sound and word to offer hope to the searching, presence to the sorrowful, and rest to the weary. A pianist, composer, and producer, his projects featured on this podcast are the two solo piano records Rest Assured (2021) and Beside Still Waters (2024) and his single Moan (Matthew 2:18) featuring Tramaine Parker, released on Inauguration Day 2025 on the project When Souls Cry Out. Julian steadily releases music under his own name and with his group, The JuJu Exchange. You can learn more about his work at juliandavisreid.com. What does it mean to be welcoming and inclusive from a rooted depth, and how do we see the Holy Spirit nudging us towards this concept? Ruth is joined by a special guest, Transforming Center's very own cultivator of community and connection, Tina Harris, today to discuss the many ways we are called to practice hospitality in the name of Christ. Tina shares her own transformative experiences practicing radical hospitality, what it has felt like to not be welcomed, and practical and concrete ways churches can begin to become more welcoming and inclusive of all types of people. They also discuss why they think there is a resistance to this invitation and lament the ways that beautiful words and ideas like diversity, equity, and inclusion have become politicized, hot button issues. This season we are exploring the future of Christian spirituality. Based on her own experience and the lives of people she accompanies on the journey, Ruth has been naming what she is noticing and observing regarding the future of Christian spirituality– how the Spirit is moving and how we can align ourselves to participate in the future God is leading us into. Elements she is naming include respect for the role of desire; emphasis on spiritual direction; welcoming and inclusive; committed to justice; and more. This season Ruth will sit down with thoughtful Christian leaders to discuss their thoughts on one of these elements, as it has to do with the future of Christian spirituality. This season was inspired by the Beyond Words series by the same name. Check out those posts here. James Ryan, a 50-year-old oral surgeon and former owner of Evolution Oral Surgery in Germantown, Maryland, has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for supplying his girlfriend, Sarah Harris, with addictive anesthesia solutions that ultimately led to her death. The sentencing far exceeds state recommendations for the case of depraved-heart murder. Circuit Court Judge Cheryl A. McCally, who presided over the case, showed little mercy as she delivered the sentence. Harris, who was only 25 years old and weighed a mere 83 pounds at the time of her death, succumbed to a lethal combination of ketamine, propofol, and diazepam intoxication. Prosecutors argued that Ryan played a significant role in Harris's death, as he continuously provided her with stolen drugs from his practice, even as her health deteriorated. Despite a calculated sentencing guideline of 10 to 25 years, Judge McCally emphasized the exploitation of trust and the gravity of Ryan's actions, leading her to impose the 45-year sentence. Tina Harris, Sarah's grieving mother, expressed satisfaction with the verdict. In an emotional statement in court, she clutched a lock of Sarah's braided hair and a satchel of her ashes, proclaiming, "This is all I have left of my baby. This is all I have left because you took her." The text messages showed that it was February 2021 when Ryan first introduced her to ketamine, a drug often used for surgery sedation, which he said would help her anxiety. “I can give you an injection,” he wrote. “The anxiety will be completely gone in 6 seconds.” The couple's conversations expanded to other drugs and supplies, including IV poles, saline bags, gauze, tape, and 20-gauge needles. “Can you get more Versed and ketamine,” Harris wrote on Aug. 27, 2021. “And also IV catheter.” The texts were often written while Harris was at their home and Ryan was at his office. At one point, as noted by McCally on Wednesday, Ryan wrote to Harris that he had given her some more ketamine while she slept. The judge also referenced a 10-second video, apparently taken by Ryan, of the two of them sitting next to each other. Harris had an arm up in the air as if it was floating that he would make such a video and keep it made an impression on the judge. “The fact that that seemed appropriate in your world is gut-wrenching,” she said. On the morning of January 26, 2022, Ryan discovered Harris unresponsive in their Clarksburg home and called 911. Despite efforts to revive her, paramedics pronounced Harris dead at the scene. An autopsy later confirmed the cause of death as drug intoxication. Prosecutors sought a 55-year sentence, arguing that Ryan was aware of the deadly consequences of his actions. Ryan's defense maintained that he acted out of love to alleviate Harris's pain but made the wrong decisions. They emphasized his struggles with drug abuse and mental health. Judge McCally, however, condemned Ryan's dangerous actions, pointing to text messages and a video recording where Harris appeared to be high.  Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? This season we are focusing on justice as an aspect of spiritual formation and we believe Lent to be the perfect season to explore this connection. Ruth is joined again by David Bailey and Tina Harris to explore these topics. How do oppressed people experience the Paschal Mystery? What is redemptive suffering? How do we determine where we are in the cycle of suffering, death, burial and resurrection and how can we discern if God might be calling us towards the next movement in this cycle?   Lectionary scripture for this week: Ezekiel 37:1-14 Psalm 130 Romans 8:6-11 John 11:1-45 Mentioned in this episode: Martin & Malcolm & America by Dr. James Cone David Bailey is a public theologian, culture maker, and catalyst focused on building reconciling communities. Tina Harris, Director of Greenville County Outreach for FAVOR, says, “I have a desire to do more advocating for the homeless and being a mouthpiece because I can look at my own experience, and I know it wasn't a good or pretty picture. So, I'm open to standing up and being a voice for those that don't have a voice.” She's been recruiting more people who have or are currently experiencing homelessness to stand up and speak up. “I knew that they had a heart for change. And change comes when people come together – not in fear to open their mouths because of who's listening, but we come together strong and we speak out for what is right.” Tina is interviewed by Susan McLarty, Coordinator of Greenville Homeless Alliance (GHA), who with Tina recently piloted the first GHA advocacy academy. This week we continue our interview with Pelvic Floor PT specialist Dr. Tina Harris.  Last episode we explored the specifics of pelvic floor PT, and how Dr. Tina approaches care.  So much of her care is related to her life's story and journey, and that's what we go into with this week's episode.  She has experienced infant loss and pregnancy after loss.  She has dealt with subpar prenatal care and learned to advocate for herself.  And she combines this into what she gives through her organization, Competent Heart Perinatal Specialist. On top of that she is a best-selling author and also the founder of CH Expressions.  As someone who strives to help her clients create their birth support team, we are so thankful that she has dedicated her life's work to the birthing community.  How to reach Dr. Tina:Website: https://www.chperinatal.com/Facebook: https://facebook.com/chperinatalInstagram: https://instagram.com/chperinatal Book Link: : (In)Fertility: Secrets, Struggles, and SuccessesThis podcast was created from a desire to share conversations and interviews about topics from pregnancy and birth to motherhood and the importance of a healthy body and mind through it all.  Our goal is to bring you fun, interesting, and helpful conversations that excite you and make you want to learn more.We hope what we share will make an impact and help someone else along their journey. We believe that when you are aligned in body, mind, and your intuition, you can conquer anything! If you like what you are hearing and you don't want to miss our newest episodes, be sure and tap subscribe. As a doctor of physical therapy, Dr. Tina is looking at her clients as a whole.  She looks at how they are functioning, and she takes it a step further to assess the health and overall function of the pelvic floor.  Now don't worry if you don't know what bones, muscles, or ligaments make up the pelvic floor, or if you only think of physical therapy in terms of “post-injury care”, or what breathwork has to do with pelvic floor PT because we talk about ALL of that and more in part 1 of our interview.  Not only does Dr. Tina assess prenatal patients for functional movement patterns and postpartum patients for bladder issues (and more!) but she also adds in expertise as a doula, reiki practitioner and acupressure instructor.  She created her organization, Competent Heart Perinatal Specialist to help the birthing community find their tribe, create their village, and to support and empower themselves.  She's an author, life-long lover of birth, has dealt with infant loss; she continues to expand her skills to combine her talents and passions for holistic wellness, pelvic health, and childbirth to guide individuals towards healing and alignment of their body, mind, and spirit.  How to reach Dr. Tina:Website: https://www.chperinatal.com/Facebook: https://facebook.com/chperinatalInstagram: https://instagram.com/chperinatal Book Link: (In)Fertility: Secrets, Struggles, and SuccessesFollow us on Instagram:Aligned Birthwww.instagram.com/aligned_birthDr. Shannonwww.instagram.com/sunrise_chiropractic_wellnessDoula Rachaelwww.instagram.com/northatlantabirthCheck out our individual websites:Sunrise Chiropractic and Wellness - www.sunrisechiropracticandwellness.comNorth Atlanta Birth Services - www.northatlantabirth.comDisclaimerThe information shared, obtained, and discussed in this podcast is not intended as medical advice and should not be relied upon as a substitute for professional consultation with a qualified healthcare provider familiar with your individual medical needs.
