Workers at Woolworths distribution centres are on strike! For the past 2 weeks, workers have been picketing Woolies warehouses across the country to demand a pay increase and to stop a new performance management program, referred to by Woolworths as the “framework”, which is designed to monitor workers' every move and increase the pace of work. In an already-dangerous industry where injuries are common, Woolworths is attempting to enforce 100% pick rates on workers. This is the same Woolworths that have seen their profits (and board member bonuses) soar over the past few years through price-gouging.    Emma spoke to two working-class legends about the strike: Ryan Stanton and Jerome Small.    Ryan Stanton is an electrician and ETU member based in Melbourne. He worked in warehousing for 5 years where he led a victorious strike at Polar Fresh back in 2016. He's a socialist and contributor to Red Flag.  Jerome Small is an industrial organiser of Socialist Alternative. He worked in construction for around 17 years and has been a socialist and union activist since the 80s. He has been covering the Woolworths strike for Red Flag newspaper.  Picket addresses at the end of this article: Support striking Woolworths warehouse workers this week (and next) (19 Nov) https://redflag.org.au/article/support-striking-woolworths-warehouse-workers-this-week-and-next Jerome's latest article on the strike: https://redflag.org.au/article/hope-on-the-picket-line    Check Red Flag website for more coverage of the current strike: https://redflag.org.au/   Read about the recent history of class struggle in the logistics industry: The 2015 Melbourne Liquor Distribution Centre strike: Inside a Melbourne warehouse strike: https://redflag.org.au/article/inside-melbourne-warehouse-strike   The 2016 Polar Fresh strike: 'Thirty bucks, no trucks!' Welcome to the Monday Breakfast show for Monday October 28th, 2024.  Last week, Eric spoke with Myles Russell-Cook about Reko Rennie's REKOSPECTIVE exhibition at The Ian Potter Centre, NGV Australia in Fed Square. The pair spoke about the exhibition, the importance of platforming Indigenous artists, toxic masculinity as well as art being inherently political.  This Saturday, there was an anti-military rally on the Geelong waterfront organised by IPAN Geelong & Vic Southwest, and Elbit out of Vic (an initiative of Free Palestine Coalition Naarm), denouncing the push by ALL levels of Government to make Geelong a Military hub under the guise of 'job creation'. We will now hear from Zelda Grimshaw, an antimilitarist organiser with 'Wage Peace/Disrupt Wars' and a core organiser at the recent Disrupt Land Forces mobilisation. Zelda zooms out to discuss links between militarism and climate collapse from a decolonial perspective - bringing us the personal story of Wity Unue, a young man from the highlands of West Papua. The speech mentions an article about Wity's story, which includes the video of him singing with his friends prior to his murder.  [CW* This segment makes mention of military violence].  On Wednesday of last week around 300 workers from the Qantas Engineers Alliance, a coalition of workers from the Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union, the Electrical Trades Union, and the Australian Workers Union, walked off the job for 24 hours. The strike is part of industrial action that the Qantas Engingeers' Alliance has been taking for weeks and was a response to Qantas' refusal to discuss a new enterprise agreement with the alliance. The current enterprise agreement expirence at the end of June; the alliance is asking for a 5 per cent per year pay rise as well as a 13.5 per cent first-year increase to compensate for three and a half years of wage freezes and to align wage levels with elsewhere in the industry. To talk about the action and the wider campaign for better conditions and wages for workers in the Qantas Engineers' Alliance, Rob spoke with Michael Wright, National Secretary of the ETU on Friday. NSW Police have conducted almost 900 strip searches at train stations since 2016, data released by Redfern Legal Centre last week has revealed. Of the 883 strip searches conducted, a disproportionate number were conducted on First Nations people, making up 9% of all searches. A total of 66 searches involved children aged between 10 and 17. To speak more about the data and the legality of the searches, Rob spoke with Sam Lee, supervising solicitor at Redfern Legal Centre. A class action filed by Inner Melbourne Community Legal launches today to find answers about why the Victorian Government made its decision to 'retire and redevelop' 44 public housing buildings across the state. Lead plaintiff Barry Berih argues that the Victorian Government did not properly consider the human rights of residents when making its decision to demolish the towers. To find out more about the class action Rob interviewed Harry Millward, General Secretary of the Renters and Housing Union. The class action will be taking place today and tomorrow at the Supreme Court on Lonsdale St, with the residents requesting for Community Members to come down in support if possible. You can also find out more at imcl.org.au ; and listen back to the last episode of Raise The Roof on the 3CR website, which presented voices of affected older residents. Raise the Roof is hosted by the Housing for the Aged Action Group, and you can find that previous show at 3cr.org.au/HAAG.

This year we saw Miki take 4th at Challenge Family Championship, 2nd at Ironman 70.3 Elsinore, and 10th at the PTO Canadian Open in a very stacked field. Weekend Wrap: Morrison's ”blessing” a curse on NDIS, Barnaby's Insiders sell off plus wage theft & pork barrelling

"The Week on Wednesday" with Van Badham & Ben Davison

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 24, 2022 26:56

Ben Davison looks at Morrison's explanation that his debate response to a mother who's child has had their NDIS support cut that he was "blessed to not have had to go through that" was about the difficulties in navigating the NDIS, rather than a comment about children with a disability.  Even if we take Morrison at his word it is, at the very least, a condemnation of his own failure to properly deliver the NDIS.  Plans have been cut by an average of 4%, appeals to the AAT have doubled, foreign private equity backed unregistered and unregulated "platforms" that "connect" workers and participants in, what has been described as, digital sham contracting arrangement are taking 14% margins out of the tax payer funded system.  As the campaigns head into the Northern Territory it is timely to remember that HALF of NDIS plans in the NT have been cut in the last six months. Insiders discussed in detail the failures of the Morrison government on the Solomon Islands and Ben explores how Morrison spent the end of the week setting up another pork barrel program while refusing to answer questions about Australia's largest foreign policy blunder in the pacific for over 70 years. Barnaby Joyce was the Insiders guest from the government and he made it clear that their only plan is to let multinational corporations sell our resources overseas.  While sitting in Gladstone, where people have to fly to Brisbane to get medical treatments as billions of dollars of resources depart the docks, Barnaby was asked what the government's plan for the future "If they want to buy it we will sell it" was his response. This ideologically lines up with the findings of two major pieces of work from the Australian Union movement this week.  The ship building company Austal received a Morrison campaign visit and a $124M contract after having been found to underpay its workers. The union, ETU, won the money back but Morrison wouldn't even acknowledge the request for safeguards to prevent this from happening again on government funded projects. The ACTU released research showing that while 100 countries put limits on the use of "fixed term contracts" Australia is not among that group of 100 nations and that casuals in Australia are being paid up to $350 LESS than ongoing workers doing the same job. Ben urges everyone to join their union at australianunions.org.au/wow and to put the Liberals last (with a brief explanation of how the ballot papers work)

Candice is now in age group 40-44 . She started Triathlon as a 35-39 .  Previously Candice had always run as a way to stay healthy and spend time with her dad they just ran around the town and village roads after school a few nights a week together from  being about 11 or 12 but she never liked races and learnt that she wasn't cut out for racing from school events where she always seemed have something go wrong . Candice had her daughter when she was 23  Then she  joined Trawden running club just really as a way to not have to run alone on dark winter evenings, Trawden runners were a small club and b4 long they were advising her to join Clayton Harriers a bigger club So she was introduced and  moved to them and by now was really enjoying running and the people she was  meeting were amazing . The run coach at Clayton at the time was a superb guy , he did the speed work sessions and really helped Candice. She had never heard of fell running but Clayton training runs on Pendle hill were where her love of off road running began to flourish.2003 she ran the London marathon but from then on she focused on Fells and mountains, in 2005 Candice did the Everest base camp marathon and in 2008 was selected for GB mountain running team. She was literally on top of the world loving everything about mountains and runningCandice made a decision to try to run London marathon again for a better time and from there her problems started. The first gift she was given was 2 foot fractures , 1 was an evulsion fracture caused by impact, 2 was a stress fracture from running too much - these little nasties were what drove Candice to swimming, she got through the first stress fracture with some breast stroke sessions and her not so good front crawl , but when the 2nd fracture happened Candice was determined to to give swimming some credit for its efforts to keep her sane and  decided it was worth learning how to swim properly so that if ever she needed it again she could do it better and get more out of it . Candice  was lucky to have a friend who was a national level swimmer as a child and she taught her the basics and so she  just kept going with it,  like with running Candice  didn't want to lose all the gains so  just kept it going once a week and then she venture onto an open water swim course and start getting into the lakes  Candice  continued running and litte bit of swimming but no more marathons - back to her beloved trails and hills. Candices next gift was a bad back - she was diagnosed with spondylolithesis and spent a few years struggling with her back she was unable to sleep let alone run for almost 2 years  during this time sh took up cycling, her husband bought her her  first road bikes and she kind of enjoyed it and it  kept her  fit and she could get out and look at the hills and mountains that she so adored . After 2 injections into her spine she finally started to feel better and  went to Mont Blanc to try to climb it .During this adventure Candice  was given her 3rd gift . Her knees started to become very painful this was the start or what lead to 2 knee operations one on each knee  and being diagnosed with knee cap damage that was irreparable which put an end to her running up and down mountains dreams once and for all. So as Candice  cant run hills ,  cant run far,  cant run many miles per week , its just too horribly painful so what she could doswim cycle and run a bit =  SPRINT TRI  So it was 2016  Southport sprint that Candice  qualified for Düsseldorf ETU then she decided to try a standard distance she actually qualified for standard distance as well,   Then the icing on the cake was finding out the ETU race was in Kitzbhule - a Ski resor
