Hal Herring is an award-winning outdoor journalist, fierce public lands advocate, and thoughtful, action-oriented conservationist. He's also an accomplished podcaster and host of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers' Podcast & Blast with Hal Herring. If you're a longtime listener of Mountain & Prairie, you may remember my first episode with Hal back in December of 2019– pre-pandemic, when the world was a much different place. Like me, Hal was born and raised in the south, and also like me, his Southern accent has not faded. But he's made Montana his home for many decades now and has established himself as one of the most respected voices in conservation here in the American West. This episode was recorded live and on stage at the 2024 Old Salt Festival on the Mannix Family Ranch in Helmville, Montana. If you're not familiar with Old Salt, it's a three-day gathering in Montana's Blackfoot Valley that combines live Americana music with artists like Sterling Drake and Summer Dean, wood-fired cooking with chefs including Eduardo Garcia, and a General Store featuring western makers such as Cate Havstad, Jillian Lukiwski, Christy Sing, and many more. The festival also includes a ton of on-stage conversations about land stewardship, conservation, history, literature, and more– and this is one of those conversations. Most of you are probably already familiar with Hal, but if you're not, you are in for a treat. Hal brings such energy, humor, and knowledge to everything he does, and he has personally helped me in my own personal journey to better understand this complex region known as the American West. In this conversation, we covered a lot, including: Hal's journey from Alabama to Montana, his thoughts on the current state of family ranching and public lands, optimism vs pessimism, and who he admires in the conservation space. We also discuss his forthcoming book on public lands, an idea he is working on for a new podcast, and we take a number of questions from the audience. I know you'll learn a lot from this episode– I consider Hal a great teacher and leader, and it's always an honor to spend time with him. Tickets for the 2025 Old Salt Festival are on sale now, so follow this link to learn more and secure your spot at what will surely be another amazing weekend with amazing people. Episode 262: There's no better forum to survey what's happening at the cutting edge of roots music than AmericanaFest, and 2023's huge edition was no exception. In what's become an annual tradition, I survey three acts who are making waves in three different genre spaces in the Americana universe. Summer Dean quit her teaching job around her 40th birthday to hit the road as a honky tonk singer and songwriter and earned the support of Bruce Robison's Next Waltz Records. Caleb Elliott became ensconced with Muscle Shoals label Single Lock Records as a session cello player before breaking cover as a songwriter. They liked his stuff so much they've released two albums with him. And Allison DeGroot and Tatiana Hargreaves define the cutting edge in today's old-time scene.

Country singer-songwriter Summer Dean is a great example of persistence paying off. Taking small gigs while still working as a schoolteacher, she had a bigger vision, and kept bugging folks for better gigs (sometimes contacting them every 48 hours until they gave in) to the point that she could be a musician full-time and walk away from the classroom. Only 5 years into her career, she has already received 2 wins at the Ameripolitan Music Awards, snagged opening slots for Marty Stuart, Dale Watson and Asleep at the Wheel, and appeared at SXSW 2023. One of Summer's ultimate visions is an induction into the Grand Ole Opry and no doubt she'll keep pursuing it with her typical tenacity. For now, she has completed her second full-length album called The Biggest Life, produced by acclaimed songwriter Bruce Robison. Find out who Summer wants to induct her into the Opry, who she'd like to meet backstage, and what message was revealed to her during a visit to a medium.Connect with Summer & Find Her Music:Website Summer Dean MusicFacebook Summer Dean MusicInstagram @summerdeanTwitter @summerdeanmusicYouTube @summerdean734Summer's Musical Influences & Inspirations:Johnny BushKasey ChambersMerle Haggard (Serving 190 Proof album, 1979) Willie Nelson (Redheaded Stranger album, 1975)Dolly PartonBruce RobisonConnie SmithGillian Welch (Everything Is Free, 2001)Lucinda Williams (Car Wheels on a Gravel Road album, 1998)References:5 Female Artists Creating the Future of Country MusicAmeripolitan Music Awards

In episode 265, Kestrel welcomes Summer Dean (AKA @ClimateDiva), a writer, content creator and model, to the show. Both a fashion lover and climate justice advocate, Summer has a distinct way of making these conversations educational, intersectional and fun. “My goal this whole time has been to communicate to people who aren't already in these spaces, and I think it's really important to make the climate and sustainable fashion movement as big as possible. So, for me, that means making my content funny and nuanced and stylish and accessible. But you know, I really think my personality does shine through in a lot of these videos, and it's really just about bringing as many people as possible along for the ride.” -Summer This week, we're reminded of some of the ways that the systems intend to control our unique paths. For example – capitalism makes us feel that we must hone in on one specific aspect of our personality or our interests – so we can more easily monetize that particular skill. The patriarchy tells us that as women, we should dim ourselves down and blend in – in other words, we shouldn't be *showy* in the way we dress, in order to be quote unquote taken seriously in our professions. This week's guest has resisted both in the way she's crafted her distinct career path. By welcoming her whole *self* into her work, she's found a niche at the intersections of fashion and climate justice. From educating us about science and big data to curating sustainable fits, she's literally showing us how it's possible to build protest through self expression. Quotes & links from the conversation: Interview with Summer On Atmos (by Yessenia Funes) “My goal is to just really bring a sense of light heartedness into this. I think that when we feel a little lighter and a little more joyful in these movements, I think it just really brings a sense of longevity, and I think that is what is going to make these movement last and ultimately win and build a better world.” (19:43) -Summer “My biggest rule for brands that I work with is — are they ok with talking about degrowth and reducing consumption, because if they're not, then I don't really feel comfortable working with them … I have to see that they stand for the same things I stand for, which is reducing overconsumption and overproduction, ending exploitation of people and the planet, and rebuilding our relationship with the earth.” (23:58, 24:26) -Summer Conscious Chatter episode 238 with Jazmine Rogers and Gabby Sage (Kestrel mentions) *Slow Fashion Means Slowing Down Media* — post Kestrel did on IG in the past “I also do think that clothing and style and self expression has a huge role to play in the climate movement and building a better world.” (34:42) -Summer “We shouldn't have to even have sustainability influencers — this whole career that I have in and of itself — the fact that I am even a sustainability influencer shows that there is something inherently wrong with our system. We shouldn't have to decide between buying something that is causing people to essentially be enslaved or buying something that is a little bit more expensive that isn't.” (42:17) -Summer Reel Summer did about the lack of size accessibility in sustainable fashion “There is something fundamentally wrong with the inaccessibility in sustainability.” (44:17) -Summer “These algorithms really tend to promote environmental content that is very disheartening and leaves the viewer in a state of complete dread. I notice that the most viral videos about climate change are ones that really just don't paint a picture of a better future or a hopeful future or a future that includes everyone at all … I think there does also need to be a conversation about how these algorithms are promoting content that leaves us feeling hopeless and leaves us feeling powerless.” (47:10) -Summer “The Solutions to the Climate Crisis Lie Within An Intersectional Approach” by Summer for Blueland YouTube video of “Intersectional & Inclusive Environmentalism Panel featuring Climate Diva & Climate Daisy” ACE Interview with Summer On Why Social Media Isn't All Bad Follow Summer on Instagram > This week's episode is brought to you by Defunkify, a household cleaning products company that is on a mission to get toxic chemicals out of the products we wash our clothes with and clean our homes with. In this week's episode we're featuring the debut full-length album for Texan Summer Dean: "Bad Romantic" (2021). Born in Clay County, Texas and country as a dirt clod, there's been a lot of living in the three or more years between Dean's first EP "Unladylike" in 2016 and "Bad Romantic": growing comfortable in herself and her situation served as inspiration for many of the album's tracks (six of which Dean wrote or co-wrote). Seems to this reviewer that the first half of the LP could have been done in consultation with Waylon and Haggard, and Dean's Texas dancehall roots are showing on the second; Jess Meador's rising fiddle intro from "Hey Mister" recalls in no uncertain terms the very best of Johnny's Bush's material. Well chosen covers from modern day songsmiths Simon Flory and Brennen Leigh match beautifully with contributions from Leona Williams and Linda Hargrove, all tied together with Dean's vocal, wonderfully worn around the edges: honest and working class. A sterling shuffle in "Three Timin' Game" follows on from "Distracted" (dripping in co-producer Kevin Skrla's steel) and Hargrove's "Blue Jean Country Queen" seems to fit Dean like a glove. Summer Dean fills a gap in the greater roots music scene nationwide with "Bad Romantic": a lack of good ol' hardcore Texas country music, heavy on the attitude, fiddle and steel. And I'm sure glad about it.

On Top Of The World". Escuchar audio
