When executed as beautifully as this one, multigenerational novels are all consuming in the best way. Sandra Oh's performance of Min Jin Lee's audiobook makes the experience even more immersive. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Robin Whitten discuss this story of young Sunja, who is saved from ruin and moves from Korea to Japan. Thus a family tale begins and proceeds through four generations in the early 20th century. Oh is an outstanding narrator. Her pace is brisk yet easy to follow, and her crisp enunciation and gentle tone are a pleasure to hear. PACHINKO is a visit to another place and time, and Oh is an exceptional guide.

Korean drama, or K-drama, is enjoying phenomenal worldwide success. Thanks to video-on-demand streaming - and given a boost by the pandemic - South Korea is now one of the largest content providers in the world. In this edition of The Cultural Frontline actress Min-ha Kim, who stars as Sunja in the adaptation of the best-selling historical novel Pachinko, explores the worldwide impact of K-drama and speaks to writers, actors and producers about how it is evolving. K-drama fans come from all over the world, says Deema Abu Naser who runs the biggest K-drama community on Instagram, @deemalovesdrama. She was recently invited to visit film locations in Korea by Jeanie Chang, who posts about K-drama and mental health as @noonasnoonchi. But will K-drama's new international audience change it for better or worse? Now that many dramas are being shared internationally on streaming platforms, they are changing, says Forbes K-drama critic Joan MacDonald. Squid Game made the world sit up and notice K-dramas - but they were already gaining popularity. Most Korean dramas are made to be watched by the whole family, and that is part of their worldwide appeal. Korean cinema, on the other hand, was always aimed at an adult audience. Korean script writer Hong Eun-mi tells Min-ha that the gap between K-drama and cinema has narrowed - the pandemic led to a slump in the film industry and now many writers and producers are working in K-drama instead. Another Korean innovation, webtoons - comics designed to be read vertically on a smartphone – have become a primary source for K-dramas. Some have millions of fans and are published globally, acting as a sort of barometer for any drama reversion, says Minyoung Alissia Hong, an executive at Korean media company Kakao Entertainment. She saw the potential early on and first suggested turning the webtoon What's wrong with Secretary Kim? into a drama. Itaewon Class soon followed and was a huge success. K-dramas are also being remade in other countries - screenwriter Melis Veziroglu Yilmaz adapts Korean dramas for Turkish TV and says there are many parallels between Turkish and Korean culture. She hopes K-drama will remain family-friendly. Actress and singer Uhm Jung-hwa welcomes the changes. She recently starred in Doctor Cha, a drama about a middle-aged woman who decides to go back and finish her medical training after 20 years of looking after her family. Uhm Jung-hwa says roles for women have become more interesting since she first started out in the ‘90s, and pre-production has also improved the quality of K-dramas. Lees Sarah Winman! Ulysses Temper is a young British soldier, Evelyn Skinner is a sexagenarian art historian and possible spy. She has come to Italy to salvage paintings from the wreckage and relive memories of the time she encountered EM Forster and had her heart stolen by an Italian maid in a particular Florentine room with a view. Evelyn's talk of truth and beauty plants a seed in Ulysses' mind that will shape the trajectory of his life – and of those who love him – for the next four decades. Pachinko is a deeply intimate, yet hugely expansive multi-generational historical saga on Apple TV+. Adapted from Min Jin Lee's 2017 novel, the series features several intersecting characters and storylines, but focuses mainly on Sunja, a Korean woman whose family suffers under Japanese imperial rule. With an impressive cast including Lee Min Ho and Oscar-winner Yuh-Jung Youn, Pachinko depicts Sunja throughout her life amid conditions of poverty, bigotry and institutionalized injustice against Koreans.
We recap chapter 2 of Pachinko with lots of hot takes on Hansu and Sunja's age gap, Japanese accents, and of course hotties!Chapter 2 Synopsis: Hansu opens Sunja's eyes to the world, but it inspires dreams that come at a price; Solomon attempts to leverage his Korean identityWatch now on Apple TV+Follow us on twitter at @koreandramapodSubscribe to the podcast on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Spotify, or our RSS Feed!Korean Drama Podcast is a part of the Potluck Podcast CollectiveProduced by @marvinyueh
In the new Apple TV+ series “Pachinko,” adapted from the bestselling novel by Min Jin Lee, every generation is in dialogue, either indirectly or directly, with the ones that come before and after it. That's according to Soo Hugh, the series' creator, showrunner and writer. “Pachinko,” a sweeping multi-generational family drama, features the story of Sunja, played by Oscar winner Yuh-Jung Youn, an impoverished young woman who suffers through the 20th century Japanese occupation of Korea, and later with her family faces of life of hardship and discrimination in Japan. We'll talk to Hugh about the creative challenges of adapting a beloved novel and what it's like to create spaces for the telling of diverse stories.
Pachinko is a story of Sunja that spans 4 generations – with the fourth generation (Solomon's story) touching on the Asian-American experience – something Rox and Jules can relate to as Asians growing up in Australia. In this episode, super excited about the show and the book, Rox and Jules unpack what they think about Episode 1-3 so far - weaving in their personal experiences as Korean-Australians and Chinese Australians along the way. They dial in Jules' grandma who lived through colonial Korea and invite a guest with a Korean-Japanese-Australian background on the show as well, because – well, why not! Anyone else really invested in the show right now? Did you read the book too? How do your experiences relate to the show? Did you bawl your eyes out too T_T No matter where you're tuning in from, we hope you enjoy another chatty episode of the Asian Soup Podcast. Come chill with us and get nourished! Apple TV's latest hit series, Pachinko is a fascinating take on Korean-Japanese turbulence in the early 20th century. On Today's Episode, we talk about the first three chapters released last Friday. Apologies in advance, however. During the editing process, I found that we accidentally started referring to "Sunja" (the main character) as "Sanju" midway through the podcast and didn't catch the error. Pachinko is fascinating, and if you enjoyed it as much as I did I hope you tune in! Have a great week!

(Please forgive my pronunciations as well, I am doing the best I can with my accent.) I will also discuss the new schedule for the show. Her work has appeared in Best Australian Stories, Meanjin, Review of Australian Fiction, Griffith Review and Best Summer Stories. Her latest novel is Stone Sky Gold Mountain. The pairings: Pachinko by Min Jin Lee In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. He promises her the world, but when she discovers she is pregnant--and that her lover is married--she refuses to be bought. Instead, she accepts an offer of marriage from a gentle, sickly minister passing through on his way to Japan. But her decision to abandon her home, and to reject her son's powerful father, sets off a dramatic saga that will echo down through the generations. Richly told and profoundly moving, Pachinko is a story of love, sacrifice, ambition, and loyalty. From bustling street markets to the halls of Japan's finest universities to the pachinko parlors of the criminal underworld, Lee's complex and passionate characters--strong, stubborn women, devoted sisters and sons, fathers shaken by moral crisis--survive and thrive against the indifferent arc of history. Mirandi paired this beautiful story with a delicious and spicy Korean beef soup. The Singapore Grip (Empire Trilogy #3) by J.G. Farrell Singapore, 1939: life on the eve of World War II just isn't what it used to be for Walter Blackett, head of British Singapore's oldest and most powerful firm. No matter how forcefully the police break one strike, the natives go on strike somewhere else. His daughter keeps entangling herself with the most unsuitable beaus, while her intended match, the son of Blackett's partner, is an idealistic sympathizer with the League of Nations and a vegetarian. Business may be booming—what with the war in Europe, the Allies are desperate for rubber and helpless to resist Blackett's price-fixing and market manipulation—but something is wrong. No one suspects that the world of the British Empire, of fixed boundaries between classes and nations, is about to come to a terrible end. A love story and a war story, a tragicomic tale of a city under siege and a dying way of life, Mirandi pairs this beautiful book with the Stengah, a drink made from equal measures whiskey and soda - refreshing yet strong, simple and elegant.
